Mazel Tov Beth Torah
on Fifty Wonderful Years
You have enriched the lives of so many and
continue to do so every day!
Congratulations.
YEARS
1963-2013
I am delighted to extend my warmest greetings to everyone
marking the 50th anniversary of Toronto’s Beth Torah Congregation.
From its very beginnings in 1962, Beth Torah Congregation has
served as beloved place of worship where families and individuals could come
together to share their Jewish faith in a warm environment that blends tradition
with modernity. This milestone offers a wonderful opportunity to reflect on your
shared history, to recognize the efforts of your founders, and to reaffirm your
commitment to remain a dynamic and inclusive place of worship and centre of
Jewish learning for the future.
I commend everyone associated with Beth Torah for your
commitment to upholding your values of faith, heritage, and community. I am
sure that you will continue to thrive for many years to come.
On behalf of the Government of Canada, I wish you an enjoyable
and memorable 50th anniversary celebration.
YEARS
1963-2013
every 50 th year our ancestors celebrated
Yovel or Jubilee. in our tradition, passing a
half century mark was worthy of a major
celebration. the Yovel was a year of change
and restoration, a year of family reunions
and a national holiday. it was a time of
reflection and rededication and the Jubilee
cycle serves as a record of great milestones in
Jewish history.
as Beth torah celebrates its fiftieth year, our Jubilee
moment, we recall our founders and supporters who
dreamt of and birthed our remarkable Congregation.
We take time to celebrate the efforts and the
extraordinary outcome of so many hopes. We are so
grateful for the opportunity afforded us by their vision
that has allowed us to rejuvenate their optimism and
in the past decade “Complete the Dream” of a half
century ago.
Much has changed everywhere and yet at Beth torah
the most important features of our shul have not. We
have proved ourselves to be, despite rapid and sustained
growth, warm, embracing, welcoming and accepting.
the success we have experienced is entirely the result
of many individuals who have collectively given of their
hearts and souls to our synagogue and our
gratitude extends to them and their families;
their names adorn our beautiful shul for all
time. the memory of those now departed,
whose legacies are etched into the very
essence of our synagogue stand before us as a
testament to selflessness and generosity, their
memory will forever be the blessing that gives
us strength to carry on no matter how great
the challenges.
i could not be more proud of our congregation or
more appreciative of the opportunity to serve my chosen
role in our community. i have been blessed with a most
meaningful opportunity and am so honoured to a part
of this extraordinary celebration. i hope that i am
privileged to be an old and proud rabbi at our next Yovel
celebration along with my family and most wonderful
shul family, in good health and fortune.
הזה ןמזל ונעיגהו ונמיקו וניחהש
so may it continue to be for many years, amen.
Rabbi Yossi Sapirman
Message from the Cantor
6
as Cantor of Beth torah, i am very proud to
be part of the synagogue’s 50th anniversary
celebrations. i am very grateful for what
Beth torah is—a family shul for everyone.
having been with the synagogue for 13 years
i have seen much change. the congregation
has flourished due to some very basic but
important principles:
S treat everyone as an equal—everyone is meant to feel
comfortable in their own levels of observance and
beliefs
S Cater to our youth—the youth are our most precious
asset. By providing wonderful programming and
activities, and engaging them in our services, the
youth stay connected to the synagogue and become
our future foundations for continuity and success
S Be a true family shule—We pride ourselves in caring
for one another, and treating members like family
approximately 40 years ago, Cantor David
Koussevitzky (z"l) was invited to Beth torah for a special
weekend to lead Friday night and saturday morning
services, and conclude with a sunday evening
concert. i was honoured to be asked to put
a choir together and conduct for him. it
was a highlight for me, but even back then
i felt so comfortable in the shul. almost 30
years later, i auditioned for the position of
Cantor. i recall vividly once again how i was
welcomed by members of the Board and
congregants. i knew immediately that i had
found a new home.
this is what Beth torah is all about. the shule has
a glowing reputation in our community based on these
tenets of kindness and respect for all.
Yashar koach to our founding members who had the
fortitude and foresight to begin this congregation. Yashar
koach to the Boards, executives, and Committees that
have guided the shule over the past 50 years. and of
course, Yashar koach to you, our members who have
made Beth torah what it is today.
Message from the President
YEARS
1963-2013
Vision, Dreams, Dedication
& Legacy
as Beth torah celebrates its 50 th anniversary
and we look ahead to its next milestone, i
cannot help but marvel at the enormous
success of the last 50 years.
it took the vision of a small group, our
founders and keepers, to build a house
of worship where their legacy has manifested itself
from generation to generation. it can be seen in their
portraits on the Presidents Wall, on the magnificent
tree of Life outside our sanctuary and on the
commemorative plaques and signage throughout our
building.
it also took the vision of an innovative and energetic
young rabbi Yossi sapirman, whose appeal and wisdom
built a community where all were welcomed. it can be
said that, “hire him and they will come”, and they did,
by the scores.
With the moving and melodic voice of
Cantor and Choir Director David Young,
Beth torah’s adult and children’s choirs have
uplifted the congregation with their stirring
music.
We also have a flourishing hebrew school
directed by amy goldsweig, who has helped
contribute to the youthful energy and zeal
that pervades the synagogue.
it took the vision of a dedicated group of members
to forge ahead and lay the foundation for a building
addition to accommodate our growing waiting list of
families anxious for membership.
“Completing the Dream” became “a Dream
Completed” and our 500 families finally had a home
where all could be accommodated comfortably. it took
five decades to accomplish this feat, but today we are the
envy of congregations across the greater toronto area.
Allen Gerskup, President
7
Message from the Chair
8
as Chair of the 50th anniversary
Committee, i would like to welcome you to
our gala “an affair to remember: Drink,
Dance and games of Chance”. Beth torah
has experienced an amazing journey during
its five decade existence. the shul has evolved
from a small group of local families who
davvened in a tiny portable, to a dynamic
and growing congregation with more than
500 families lead by an energetic and inspiring group of
clergy and staff.
the germination of the anniversary gala concept
emerged from a brainstorming session involving the
rabbi, harold Wolkin and myself about a year ago.
the committee was formed last summer and since that
time the members have made a substantial contribution
towards the success of this event. the entire team
devoted a great deal of energy and creativity towards
developing a Mad Men- type theme with the goal of
transporting our guests back in time through the use
of retro décor, music from that era, specialty cocktails,
casino games and scrumptious hors d’oeuvres supplied
by the Park hyatt.
i would like to extend my gratitude to
stuart gerskup for completing all of the
design work for the event. in turn, iain
Mcilveen and sari gorman deserve special
mention for producing an inspiring menu
and cocktails that mesh with our theme and
should please the sophisticated palates of
our guests. i would also like to thank our
marvelous event planner, Fern Cohen, for
orchestrating it all and smoothing out the ruffles. Finally,
the Beth torah staff should be acknowledged for the
support that they provided to the committee throughout
the process.
Beth torah, you are looking incredibly energetic
and youthful for a 50-year-old, thanks to the vitality of
your volunteers, clergy and staff and especially due to
the major reconstruction work that you were treated to
several years ago! We should all be so lucky.
on behalf of my committee, i would like to wish the
shul a hearty Mazel tov on this momentous milestone!
