Early Years Experiences
Behaviour Management & Conflict Resolution
Description: When conflict arises between children in settings adults will typically ‘fix’ the children’s problems
for them. Although the ‘fix it’ approach is well intentioned what actually happens is that the adult solves the
problem for the children. The children will not have been left with any skills and will not know how to tackle a
similar problem next time it arises. During these workshops we will explore the key roles EYFS Practitioners and
Managers have in understanding how supporting and extending children’s development as individuals lays
the foundations to behaviour management. You will be introduced to a problem-solving approach to conflict
resolution where the adult takes on the role of mediator, ensuring that the disputes children have are turned into
positive learning experiences for everyone concerned.
Course Aims:
• To differentiate between Active Learning and Passive Learning and its effect on children’s behaviour
• To discuss the rational for an Enabling Environment to support and extend children’s development and the
impact the environment my have on children’s behaviour
• To explore contrasting styles of adult interaction and their effects on children
• To understand the role of the adult as mediator whilst problem solving with the children
• To demonstrate the six steps of solving problems and resolving conflict in a variety of situations
