Be Sweet brings socially and environmentally friendly products to fashionable consumers.

Products that evoke an individual style and help support community development around

the world. The collection includes hand knit scarves, shawls, hats, cardigans, and more.

Resourcefulness.

Be Sweet began when Nadine Curtis lived in Cape Town, South Africa and was inspired to

work with job creation programs that give artisans the confidence and the means to support

themselves and their families in an otherwise economically depressed region. The programs

have grown to include over 200 crafters, comprised of mostly female members of the Xhosa

Tribe who live in the Western and Eastern Cape regions. The employment is based on

learning new marketable skills, sustainable growth, fair wages, and enjoyment.

Be Sweet donates a portion of its profits to a non-profit educational support program in Cape Town called Bright

Start and the Shaw Park School, a primary and secondary school in the Eastern Cape where many of the mohair

group participants’ children attend. Be Sweet is a proud member of the Fair Trade Federation.

BE SWEET in collaboration with YMJ Consulting Group has established a “Yoga in Schools”

program. The mission of this program is to bring yoga and all of its wonderful benefits into

urban schools located in the United States. Yoga offers incredibly positive benefits for the mind,

body and spirit. Whether you practice yoga once a week, or once a day, we all understand how

amazing it can be.

The idea came about after finding out about an Earth Child program in Khayelitsha, South

Africa (which is where many of the Mielie artisans live) that started us thinking about getting

a yoga program into some of the schools here in the US. Ironically, Nadine Curtis on a recent

visit to Cape Town, saw one of the test pieces that Mielie had recently made and thought it

would make a wonderful “yoga mediation cushion”. The idea was born to donate a percentage

of retail sales of the “yoga mediation cushion” to fund “Yoga in Schools”.

The “Yoga for Schools” program will provide an initial orientation to school staff by a certified

yoga instructor, a kick-off kit, yoga mats to be used for general instruction to a specific grade

level, an initial supply of yoga mat cleaner, yoga mats for all students in that grade level that

complete the school year yoga program along with a simple yoga workbook for home use.
