Volume 3, Issue 1

ennie’s News
Jennie Richardson, State Coordinator
What an exciting time to be involved in archery in the state of
Kentucky! There are unlimited opportunities for students (and their
parents) who are interested in archery through the partnerships that
are being developed at this time — ones that we are especially excited
about seeing developed.
I hope everyone had a chance during this year’s state tournament to
visit the Archery Arcade, as well as the Ky. Afield Theater. These are
just a few examples and ideas of how you can get involved further in
archery and with outdoor experiences in general.
The growth of the schools in our regions have been staggering over
the past few months - with our Ky. NASP making the move to add
three new regions for a total of 12. Regional tournament were held in
the past two months at various locations across the state, leading to
this year’s state tournament with over 2,300 kids registered for that
event! Seeing our archers take their sport even further and finding our
NASP kids shooting in national events all over the United States is
heartwarming and gives great hope to our archery industry that
Kentucky’s Archery future is bright and shining!
Have a wonderful time at our tournament — see you at Nationals!

Kentucky Archers finish in top 5 in World Archery Festival
By: Hayley Lynch
Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife
Two Kentucky archers recently posted high finishes at the World
Archery Festival held Feb. 6-8 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Graham and Grady Cofield of Trigg County, brothers who both got
their start in Kentucky’s National Archery in the Schools Program
(NASP), each placed in the top five in their classifications.
The Festival was sponsored by the National Field Archery Association
and featured nearly 1,500 shooters competing for more than
$500,000 in prize money.
Competitors shot 30 arrows each day of the three-day competition,
with a bull’s-eye worth 10 points. Graham Cofield, a junior
at Murray State University and four-time NASP state and national
champion, took second place in the Freestyle Limited Compound
Championship. He scored 878 points out of a possible 900 and hit
the bull’s-eye 49 times. This is his fifth year competing in the Las
Vegas tournament.
“I don’t necessarily like the big city, but I like the shooting
part, anyway,” Cofield said. “In the class I shoot in, there
are several people right at the top. I guess I got lucky this
time.”
Grady Cofield took third place in his flight of the Freestyle
Limited competition. Cofield is a senior at Trigg County
High School.
“I think he did awfully well,” said Graham Cofield. “I believe
he was pretty happy with it.”
This isn’t the first year the Cofields have finished at the
top of their divisions.
“Last year, Grady won his division and Graham finished
fourth,” said Jennie Richardson, Kentucky’s state NASP
coordinator. “Very seldom does an archer finish in the
top five in two consecutive years. The competition is that
stiff.”
Richardson said more than 10 other Kentucky NASP
shooters competed in this year’s World Archery Festival.

Region 3 Update
(Breckinridge, Butler, Daviess, Grayson, Hancock, Meade and Ohio counties)
Region 3 welcomes new schools
Instructors are continuing to be trained in new schools as the region expands. NASP positively
changes the lives of countless students, coaches, and parents and it doesn’t take long to see these results
from any team after archery begins each year. Breckinridge County High School, the newest addition,
has already experienced positive results from implementing the program. Sammy Duggins,
BCHS head coach, emphasized the excitement level among the students. He reports that the young archers
appear energized by the opportunity to set new goals for themselves and are looking forward to
meeting these challenges head on as they strive to achieve these goals. The high score achieved by the
team during the regional tournament proved that they are well on their way to not only meeting their
goals but surpassing them. Duggins also commented about the new friendships that have formed and
the good sportsmanship being exhibited between the students.
One of his team members aptly explained, “It has
made each and every one of us more competitive in an
outstanding way.”
Breckinridge County High is not alone in their enthusiasm.
Coaches across the region are claiming the
same success. I want to thank all the great coaches in the
region for their dedication to the students and wish everyone
the best at the upcoming state tournament. I am
looking forward to seeing everyone then!

The National Archery
the Whitaker Center in
Jeff recently.
High School, Middle
compete for the opportunity
The archery program
Kentucky Department
of Fish and Wildlife Resources.
This year, the
tournament drew more
than 150 archers. A
crew of Fish and Wild-
Kenny Roark, Coordinator
life officers helped set
up the event, and oversaw
the competition. In
High School, Adams
Middle School and Adams
grade school took
Scenes from the Region 11 Tournament
Volunteers, such as members
of the Kentucky Department
of Fish and Wildlife staff
(seen above) and Archery
Club members like East
Kentucky Archery Club (at
right) are vital to the success
of the NASP program. These
volunteers also play a crucial
role in tournaments across
the Commonwealth.

Region 12
Elementary boys overall top shooters
The 2009 Region 12 Tournament
was very successful thanks
to all our volunteers, participating
schools, and counties. This
year we increased from 240 to 300
shooters. The spectators filled
the gym with each flight. Everyone
enjoyed the new format used
during the tournament due to the
ease of watching students from
the spectators’ point of view to
the coaches liking the efficient
way the students completed the
flights.
Once again we were honored
to have CEPALs, Jessie Nelson
and Kenny Skaggs as our Range
Captains/Officials. This year
Mike Wallace, with United Bowhunters
of KY, helped supervise
the young archers at the targets.
They were all a tremendous help
this year.
