I would like to 

begin my column 

by passing the 

attention to 

those who really 

deserve it... 

As the managing director of 

Rikki Tikki Company, I am 

not actually important in this 

context. For how do I personally 

make a difference for you - and 

your customers? I don’t! At least 

not compared to the real stars of 

‘Rikki Tikki Company’. 

At ‘Rikki Tikki Company’, we 

see the designers and artists 

as our true stars. They are the 

ones who create new trends and 

products; they are the ones who 

make a difference in people’s homes. That is why we think that our designers 

and their collections deserve to be in the spotlight - not us. 

Our role is simply to be ‘roadies’: We help in the background by arranging 

the universes of the artists. We make sure that their universes are consistent 

with the needs and wishes of our retailers and consumers. We assist by creating 

a hype and ‘ticket selling’. In short, we do everything that is necessary 

so that our stars can go on stage and shine. 

And they do shine! As a tribute to our very skilled Danish designers, we give 

them and the unique stories behind their Scandinavian design extra space – 

both in this and in our future catalogues. 

In this edition, we focus on the working methods of the designers and the 

thoughts behind the expression of their collections. For example, you can 

learn where Susanne Schjerning gets her inspiration, read Naja Munthe’s reflections 

on the difference between designing clothes and interior products 

and about Anna Nielsen’s thoughts of why she mostly uses black and white. 

By giving our designers more room and time to speak, I hope that I can 

inspire you to see new possibilities as to how their collections and universes 

can fit into your business concept.

WHAT IS JUST? 

JUST by Rikki Tikki is Rikki Tikki’s own brand 

within which new and trendy products are 

developed and produced. JUST is the place 

where everything can happen, it is young, 

posh, and trendy and is supposed to have a 

fast adjustment of the product assortment. 

JUST by Rikki Tikki is the season’s trends and 

tendences which follow the new and upcoming 

colours, shapes, and designs. 

WHO IS THE TARGET GROUP FOR JUST? 

With JUST by Rikki Tikki we seek to target a 

wide group of people, though mainly focusing 

on the young and youthful who wants to be 

upbeat, however, at an affordable price. The 

products and packaging are streamlined 

hereafter and the idea is that the consumers 

will keep the products in their homes for 

a shorter period of time – after which new 

trends will follow. 

WHO IS DESIGNING JUST? 

A group of fiery souls at Rikki Tikki stands 

behind this collection, and the inspiration for 

new products and design ideas is collected at 

international trade fairs. Colours and shapes 

are then decided by the team in accordance 

with the newest trends. Many product and 

design suggestions are discussed before 

the final decision is made. Should you have

wood - such as differences in colour,

Maintenance 

All the table cloths in this series are made from 100% acrylic-coated cotton. They 

demand a minimum of maintenance as the almost 100 % waterproof surface is also oil- 

and dirt-repellant. This means that the table cloth will stay nice and clean for a longer 

time. Furthermore, the cloth has an anti-slip function on the backside which keeps it in 

place on the table. 

We recommend 

· that spilled substances be wiped off with a moist cloth within 30 minutes 

· that the table cloth be washed at 40° C in case of more unmanageable stains 

· that centrifugation and tumble drying be avoided, and that ironing be done when the 

table cloth is still a little moist 

· that any ironing be done on the front side at 150° C with a cloth covering the table 

cloth - as the anti-slip function on the backside does not withstand ironing. Ironing 

will restore the oil- and dirt-resistance

Munthe 

A dream came true for me in 1994 when I started my own company 

munthe plus simonsen. Being able to make a living by designing and 

disappearing into the creative world where you can be a child playing 

with colours and shapes. That is happiness to me. 

 

To design interior and to design clothes is very similar – what I create has to be 

usable, but beautiful at the same time. It is equally important to me that my dresses

The CASA de LUXE quality towels are made from a super soft mix of 60 % bamboo 

and 40 % cotton, which makes an incredible quality fabric. The bamboo makes the 

towels light and soft, and it gives them a beautiful, silky gloss. The bamboo can absorb 

a lot of water without it feeling wet (up to 60 % more than cotton). Furthermore, the 

bamboo fi bres contain anti bacterial elements which make the towel look and feel 

more clean because the bamboo loops do not obtain the bacteria. The bamboo fi bres 

which are used in the fabric are cellulose fi bres made from 100 % pure bamboo, and

New Conceptual Design! 

Since the Danish designer Rikke Brorson founded her design company by 

Brorson in 2010 she has been designing and producing timeless home decoration 

and lifestyle products. Rikki Brorson holds a diploma in Visual Arts and 

has a many years of experience with designs, form, and shapes. Rikke Brorson 

is a true child of nature and uses the Scandinavian nature as her playground 

both as a huntress, photographer, and as an illustrator. In her designs, she 

likes to combine the knowledge achieved through her education with her own 

experiences and her thorough knowledge of the Scandinavian nature and 

game which are her sources of inspiration and the theme of all her designs. 

Rikke Brorson’s designs are soft with a light graphic touch but still they respectfully 

depict the natural and beautiful shapes of the nature and the game.

now I have also added candles, table cloths, and bedding to my collection’. 

For 2013 Rikke Brorson’s ambition is to focus solely on the design process of 

her nature and game motifs. Therefore, it has been natural for her to engage 

in a cooperation with Rikki Tikki Company. Rikke Brorson says the following 

about this new cooperation: 

’It means a lot to me that I will now have the time and peace to become deeply 

absorbed in the design process of my motifs – and in the sparring with the

72 PIXIES / ETLY KLARBORG 

Etly Klarborg is very very busy in her pixie studio where the preparations for Christmas 2013 

have been going on for quite some time already. In this catalogue we already introduce the pixie 

couple 2013, Henrik and Dicte, who are baking Danish Christmas cookies. 

Within shortly, Etly Klarborg’s pixies will be sold in many European countries and fortunately 

the design studio is fi lled with ideas for new pixies with new pixie names. Etly models and shapes 

all new pixies herself. Once they have been carefully dried they are handpainted with the very 

unique red pixie colour which is characteristic for Etly Klarborg’s pixies. Etly’s pixies all have soul 

and personality. It is very important that the pixies have different facial expressions and mostly 

Etly has one of her friends or family members in her mind when giving birth to a new pixie. A 

newborn pixie will be named after the person Etly has in mind when designing it, and the pixie’s 

personality will also be a refl ection of the person in question. Etly fi nds inspiration in watching 

small children, apple-cheeked, potbellied always, and with tubby thighs and stumpy blouses. 

Etly’s pixies behave like the ones we remember from our childhood – they run around making 

trouble, but sometimes they also help people around them and take care of the farm animals and 

animals in nature. 

Remember to leave a bowl of rice pudding for the pixies in the addict – they will love it! 

Etly Klarborg says: 

’Once I get an idea for a new pixie I start modelling and continue till it matches the picture in 

my mind. Then, I make a plaster cast mould and once the mould is completely dry I use liquid 

red clay to cast the pixie therein. When the pixie comes out of the mould I give them a last fi nish 

and then I paint them. The colours mean a lot to me. I have spent years mixing this unique red 

colour which is characteristic for my pixies which are supposed to make people smile and bring 

forth their memories and moods from Christmas as it used to be.

In 1997, Maj-Britt and Rie Bidstrup (mom and daughter) started 

Medusa-Copenhagen – at fi rst as a shop, selling different pieces 

of art in Denmark’s capital Copenhagen. In 2002, the wholesale 

company started. In 2009, Medusa-Copenhagen initiated a collaboration 

with Rikki Tikki Company A/S. Now, Rikki Tikki Company 

A/S is in charge of the production, the sales and the distribution of 

Medusa-Copenhagen, which makes it possible for Maj-Britt and Rie 

to concentrate solely on designing and hand-shaping new, wonderful 

and funny pieces of art. This collaboration benefi ts Rikki Tikki 

Company A/S and Medusa-Copenhagen, but also our distributors. 

We are working on a Christmas series for 2013. It is expected to 

be in stock at the end of August. All of the new products will be 

presented in the next catalogue, which is going to be released at the 

beginning of August. However, you can of course contact our sales 

people if you should wish to plan your Christmas shopping earlier 

than that. On the following pages, you can see all of the fi gurines 

and ‘family members’ of the Medusa universe. You can also see our 

beautiful ribbons – only the imagination sets a limit to their countless

Anna Nielsen went to school in the famous, Danish village Skagen, which is situated at the 

very tip of Denmark. At the age of 12, she moved with her family to Ireland. Anna went to 

secondary school and took her Leaving Certificate in Dublin, and later she took a Diploma in 

Architectural Technology. She married her fellow student Gerrard and has three children. She 

works at home in her own ’Studio Gallery’ with design, art and publishing of books. Anna is a 

member of the IDI and the ’Crafts Council of Ireland’, and has participated at countless exhibitions. 

She has lived in Ireland for over 40 years, but she still holds on to her Danish roots. 

Anna explains about the new series of zodiacs: 

‘I suffered from back problems and had to keep still 

for more than two months, during which, I spent most 

of my time studying horoscopes, and how they have 

changed over the last couple of centuries. I thought it 

would be fun to try and draw some myself. To me, 

astronomy is not a science; it is just something interesting 

and entertaining. I collected information about each 

zodiac, and with a combination of that knowledge and 

a large portion of humour, I drew my own interpretation 

of the zodiacs – since then I have drawn 3 series of 

zodiac, the last one exclusively for Rikki Tikki.’

QUICK QUESTIONS FOR ANNA 

When did the collaboration with Rikki Tikki Company start, and why? 

In 2001, Ib Møller found my catalogue at a fair in Frankfurt, and in 2007, he invited 

me to exhibit my work at ’Galleri Tavi’ in the famous, Danish village Skagen. The 

exhibition was a success, and we sold many pieces at the gallery. Because it was difficult, 

expensive and complicated to send framed paintings etc to Denmark, Ib Møller 

suggested that I should start cooperating with Rikki Tikki, and in 2008, the first 6 

drawings were ordered. 

How did you get the idea for ’The Silhouette People’? 

One day, I was trying to draw the emotion ’happiness’ - I wanted to use body language 

– I drew a person who was sad, and throughout about 12 consecutive sketches, this 

person ended up very happy – thus, I had found a way to illustrate emotions! The first 

silhouette people I drew all had a neck, but no details, since then they have gradually 

developed into their present detailed shapes, without a neck! After this first drawing, 

I found out that I could even tell small stories through my drawings - at one point for 

example, I had to tell my then 5-year-old son, Karl, that his grandfather was ill, but 

that life is long. Therefore, I made a drawing called ‘Life’, and that was the first of my 

approximately 500 small stories. 

Why black and white? 

I have always drawn, and, at the age of 18, I discovered ink drawing when trying to 

make illustrations for ’The Lord of the Rings’, which I had just read. The year after, 

I started at the university, where I studied to be an architectural engineer. There, we 

used some special pens with black ink, and since then, I have almost exclusively made 

black and white drawings. Drawing with colours does not work very well for me. I see 

life as a long series of short stories which, to me, always begin without colour. I think 

the importance lies more therein that they are colourless than that they are black and 

white. I find it is easier to tell my stories without having to consider what ‘the green 

hat’ or ‘the red shirt’ might mean! 

What else do you do? 

Since 1994, I have had my own company, which distributes to 30-35 stores here in 

Ireland, and I constantly draw new designs. The newest products are traditional Celtic 

designs such as ’Mná na h Eireánn’ or ’Celtic Love Knot’ and ’Guardian Angel’, which 

are very popular right now. I also have an internet shop with all of my 500+ prints, 

original drawings and books - and I have started to paint my silhouette shapes (oil on 

canvas), which I am very into at the moment. I have made designs for ceramics and 

three series of silver and gold, and I have published three books with my short stories. 

Furthermore, I often receive special orders of different kinds such as doing the illustrations 

for an Irish collection of poems or Shirley’s idea about an eco village made out of 

cork. At the moment I am creating new Celtic designs for 2013 – I am very fortunate 

that my job is also my hobby.

Patrice Barat explains: ‘Throughout human history, we have looked up at the stars and wondered. We have always thought that they must have 

some kind of infl uence on our lives. The reading of stars and zodiacs is a science which was fi rst practiced long before the age of the pyramids. The 

zodiacs have always followed us regardless of culture, religion, or country of origin. When I created these pieces, I was inspired by the geometry of 

the zodiacs, the story belonging to each of them, their Latin names, and the planet connected to each zodiac, using my own very unique technique, I 

have mixed these elements in a harmonic way.’ 

Patrice Barat was born in Strasbourg, France, but he has lived in Denmark since 1995, when he started his work as an artist. Patrice paints male and

All gazzel’s bamboo products are approved for foods according to EU regulations. The 

contrast between the raw bamboo and the beautiful high-lustre natural lacquer gives 

a pure Scandinavian look. The lacquer is a natural product which is extracted from a 

special type of resin. It is applied in the same manner as traditional Vietnamese 

lacquerware. Up to 14 layers of lacquer are applied separately and dried between the 

processes. Then the products are water grinded, then dried, and then another layer of 

lacquer is added. This process goes on until the desired quality and look is achieved. 

The bowls are made from bamboo, which is the fastest growing plant in the world. It can 

grow up to 30 cm a day, and the biggest bamboo can grow 40 m tall and 30 cm wide. 

One single bamboo root can produce up to 15 km of stem in its relatively short life. 

Therefore, it is almost an unlimited resource, which is even bio-degradable. Bamboo is 

also a fantastic material to work with. It is stronger and harder than oak, which gives the 

products a great wear resistance and makes them incredibly dimensionally stable. 

We recommend that the bamboo products be washed by hand.

gazzel´s Flower Me porcelain with 

Esben Hanefelt´s colourful designs. 

Esben Hanefelt Kristensen, a popular artist from the Danish town Aalborg, seriously got the attention of the Danish people in the early 1990s, 

when he made the illustrations for a Danish illustrated Bible. In Denmark, this Bible was a great success among both children and adults, and 

today it has been published in many languages. Esben's paintings tell stories in strong colours. He has chosen to express himself in a very detailed 

language. Humans and animals, fl owers and trees together create fi nely drawn patterns on the canvases, and at the same time marvellous stories - 

almost hidden in the chaos of the paintings - are told. As the artist says: "I work with fairytales because life is a fairytale". 

Esben Hanefelt Kristensen had another success with the publication of an illustrated version of Saxo's chronicles of Denmark. This publication 

contains 148 of Esben's paintings, which along with the text describe the course of history in Denmark. Furthermore, in 2007, he fi nished the 

illustrations for three books about Nordic mythology written by Vagn Lundby. All of the works were exhibited in April 2009 at the city hall in 

Copenhagen. 

For Rikki Tikki, Esben Hanefelt has made these wonderful, matching napkins and acrylic table cloths.

The Danish artist Erik Lindberg has created a series of framed zodiacs, which is stylish and very original. “Contrast is an essential feature when I create”, 

Erik Lindberg says. That is also visible in this series of signs, where the main motifs are partly smooth, partly sharp-edged and very rich in detail. 

Each sign has three parts, but still they are very simplistic. The main part is of course the zodiac itself. The second part is to be found under the sign, and 

it consists of three symbols - one for the planet related to the sign, the Greek symbol for the sign, and fi nally one for the element belonging to the sign 

(earth, fi re, air or water). The last part consists of an animal which is the Native American lucky animal of the given period of the sign. 

Last but not least, Erik Lindberg has chosen to keep the colours of the signs subdued to create peace and a beautiful, aesthetic look, but also to make it 

possible for a family to have all their various zodiacs represented side by side on the wall without stealing all of the attention in the room.

The Danish painter and artist Mogens Leander has created a new series of icons. He 

has given it the name ‘EmotIcons’, which is a compilation of the two words ‘Emotions’ 

and ‘Icons’. ‘Emotions’ because the series focuses on some of the many positive emotions 

in life - HAPPINESS, JOY, FREEDOM, LOVE etc, and of course ‘Icons’ because it is a 

series of icons but also because the art of icon-making is one of Mogens Leander’s specialities. 

He founded ‘The New Icon-School of Denmark’ in 1984. 

This new series of icons includes the entire range of colours - some icons have loud colours 

with curved surfaces coloured with fluorescent glazing, and others have more discreet, 

toned-down nuances which radiate peace and thoughtfulness. The icons are timeless objects 

in balance and harmony - with an iconography and a richness of details which give food 

for thought. 

The icons radiate classicality, but they are still 

modern pieces of art. The composition of shapes and 

colours creates many different possibilities of combination. 

Engraved, millennia-old signs and statements 

have been alchemically combined with ancient, 

found objects or brand new pieces in bronze. The 

icons are ‘feelings’ symbolized in a modern language 

of form, however, with roots in the ancient Byzantine 

orthodox icon tradition.

Our collections are the result of our cooperation with a number of great Danish designers. 

Among others we cooperate with well-known names such as Susanne Schjerning and Naja 

Munthe. Naja Munthe has developed the line ‘CASA de LUXE by Naja Munthe’ which is 

produced and distributed by Rikki Tikki Company. 

Our mission is to continuously develop, test and launch new products and product lines which 

keep up-to-date with the latest fashion, and we always strive to offer products which are not 

only functional but also beautiful and stylish. 

At Rikki Tikki Company, we feel confident that we have what it takes to be a successful 

export company: In Denmark, the company is among the five largest providers of hardware 

and gift items, and so far the export is looking very promising. From 2010-2011 there was an 

increase in export of 100 percent, and from 2011-2012 another increase of 150-200 percent 

is expected. Furthermore, it is expected that this good development will keep on going for 

years to come. Logistically we are fully prepared for serious export to take off. We have great 

storage capacity in Denmark, and in cases of large orders we can also deliver directly from 

our productions in the Far East.
