Better Sex & Relationship Education (SRE) <strong>County</strong> <strong>Durham</strong> VISION VISION STATEMENT FOR SEX AND RELATIONSHIPS EDUCATION Sex and relationships education is part of a lifelong process of learning information and skills, forming beliefs, values and attitudes about sex, sexuality, sexual health and emotions. It should involve a range of agencies, parents and carers, along with young people themselves as peer educators, in supporting children and young people to cope with adolescence and prepare them for an adult life in which they can: • Be aware of and enjoy their sexuality • Behave responsibly within personal and sexual relationships and understand the consequences of their actions • Communicate effectively • Have sufficient information and skills to protect themselves and, where they have one, their partner from unintended/unwanted conceptions, and sexually transmitted infections including HIV • Access confidential advice and support • Avoid being exploited or exploiting others • Develop positive values and moral framework that will guide their decisions, judgements and behaviour. 53
Better Sex & Relationship Education The Current Position – Where We Are Now 1) Implementation of DFEE guidelines on Sex & Relationship ensuring all secondary schools are delivering Sex & Relationship Education • Emphasis is placed on consistency of information and also liaison with Health Promotion Services. • Healthy Schools Standards adhered to. • Continue to offer training support for staff, in and out of school as part of the Healthy School Standards, both for knowledge updating and development of delivery skills. • Continue to work with School Nursing Teams to identify priorities, including support work in schools. • On-going monitoring of delivery of sex and relationship education through Healthy Schools Standards Audit Mechanism. • Continue to improve liaison in PSHE networks. • Continue to plan sex and relationship education programmes relating to the needs of the young people, by consulting with them. • Continue to offer training for primary school teachers, on the delivery of SRE. • Continue to support and promote “the Sex Education Road Show” and other ad hoc events in schools, linked to Healthy Schools Standards, i.e. Contraception Awareness week/ North East Area AIDS Day. • Continue close liaison with the School Nursing Service, several of whom have undergone Family Planning Training and are therefore not only involved in the delivery or advising on contraception care in schools, but also in the local Family Planning Clinics and Young Peoples Centres.
