Chapter 4: Drafting Equipment
Identify basic drafting equipment.
Unit: 04
Date:
Use drafting equipment in a safe and efficient manner.
Describe the tools used by a CAD drafter.
Explain why the principles of drafting are common to both traditional drafting and
CAD.
Have students study the chapter and review it with them. Explain the difference
between mechanical drawing and sketching.
Describe the equipment your students will be using.
Have them estimate the cost of each item.
Demonstrate the proper way to use the equipment.
Explain why different sizes of drafting media are used.
Display different size drawing sheets. It may be difficult to find small
quantities of metric size sheets. Cut regular drafting sheets to metric sizes,
if you need to.
Explain why drafting pencils come in different degrees of hardness. Show
how to shape the pencil point.
Use overhead projections and/or handouts to show how the different types
of drafting scales are divided.
Briefly describe computer-aided drafting (CAD) tools.
Review the Drafting Vocabulary.
Assign the Test Your Knowledge questions as a quiz or for completion outside of
class. Assign either of the chapter quizzes provided in this resource.
Have students volunteer for Outside Activities assignments.

1. Examine the drafting equipment
2. Prepare a bulletin board display on computer-aided drafting (CAD).
3. Using catalogs of available drafting equipment make a comparison of the cost of a fully equipped
drafting room using drafting boards, drafting machines, and triangles, etc., relative to the cost of the
equipment used in a CAD system.
