Grass Valley News-May 24, 2013 - Camas School District

May 24, 2013

In a time-honored tradition, our GVE second

graders performed the Goin’ Buggy play on

Tuesday for the entire school during a daytime

performance and for parents in the

evening. Older kids love singing along as they

remember their own performance, while

younger kids gear up to have their turn! All

the bugs did a wonderful job! Thank you,

Mrs. Hanson, Mrs. Hord, Mr. McCoy, and Mrs.

Curtin for all your hard work and dedication

preparing these kids!

THANK YOU to everyone who attended the 3rd Annual Carnival and Auction and for

making it a huge success! This is a fun year-end event for both kids and parents

alike. Thank you to the many volunteers who donated their time to help paint

faces, supervise the bounce houses, run the cake walk, sell raffle tickets, or man

the other countless stations that were set up. Thank you to the many parents who

donated items for the grade level baskets, to the teachers who donated special

Teacher Experiences for the auction, and to the many parents who participated in

the auction and raffle! Thank you to the rain, for holding off for everyone to stay

dry during the event and just long enough for everything to be cleaned up!

The PTA is excited to announce that over $8,000 was raised at the Auction and Raffle,

which helps fund the 30+ programs and events

that directly support our Zebra’s education and

experiences at GVE!

Lastly, a BIG THANK YOU to Dawn Redmond,

Trisha Brotherton and Beth Currie for taking on

this tremendous task of leading the

organization of these events!

REMINDER - 6 th Grade ENTRY Requirements

Tdap and Varicella Immunizations

Washington State law requires that all children entering 6 th grade must show proof of the

tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (Tdap) vaccination and one dose of varicella (chickenpox)

vaccination or approximate date or age your child had chickenpox.

According to WA State regulation (WAC-246-105-020), your child has a “conditional”

immunization status and can temporarily attend school during the next 30 days of entry until

one of the following is completed:

1. Certificate of Immunization Status (CIS) showing that your child has received these

vaccinations, OR

2. Certificate of Exemption showing a medical, personal/philosophical or religious reason

for not vaccinating your child. Exemptions require the signature of a licensed health care

provider.

The Tdap vaccine protects teens against tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis (whooping cough).

The vaccine is recommended for all children 11 years and older. Tdap should replace one

tetanus booster. Pertussis is a very serious disease that causes coughing spells that make it hard

to eat, drink and even breathe. Infants and young babies are at high risk for serious illness.

Getting vaccinated at 11 years old not only protects the pre-teen, but helps stop the spread of

disease to younger siblings and babies. Whooping cough can also cause pneumonia, seizures

brain damage and death.

Children must also have one dose of the varicella vaccine to protect against chickenpox.

Chickenpox spreads easily and can cause serious skin infections, pneumonia, meningitis and

even death. Mild cases of chickenpox are uncomfortable, it is difficult to treat itchiness, and it

can leave scars.

Please schedule a health check-up that includes vaccinations for all children age 11-12 before

the first day of school September 3, 2013. Share the Certificate of Immunization Status or the

Certificate of Exemption forms with your child’s middle school within 30 days of your child’s

entry. By law if the information is not received by the school, a Notice of Exclusion for

Immunization Non-compliance will be sent.

Talk to your school nurse if you have any further questions or concerns. You can also talk to

your child’s doctor, nurse or clinic for more information on the Tdap and varicella vaccine or

visit: http://www.doh.wa.gov/YouandYourFamily/Immunization.aspx
