BRITISH COUNCIL GETIS MARKET OVERVIEW
Chinese government polices have made this market one of the fastest growing with massive interest in
overseas study. Interest from China is such that recruitment almost takes care of itself, however the
university should not become complacent as things can change rapidly. As with most markets a long
term view needs to be taken with regard to establishing the university in China. Personal contacts that
are consistently maintained work well in this market. Possible problems with ‘no shows’ and bad
debtors.
Competition for HE places in country is now intense, especially for universities widely regarded as the
best in the country and many Chinese students have limited choices locally. There is therefore currently
a rapidly increasing demand for overseas education. China's growing wealth and the availability of
private sector funding are increasingly important factors in determining the rapid expansion in the
numbers of students seeking overseas study.
At the moment China is producing more university graduates for fewer jobs. Many Chinese graduates
and government employees are highly motivated therefore to seek postgraduate education abroad as a
way of enhancing their career prospects. Those returning from such studies abroad have a record of
immediate promotion and are often given other benefits. One year UK masters' programmes are
particularly attractive to Chinese postgraduates.
POTENTIAL FOR UoB IN THIS COUNTRY
The University of Brighton has not been actively recruiting in China as we already have a growing
number of Chinese students. The university currently makes use of a number of agents, both UK and
China based, to recruit Chinese students. However, Nick Clark (IRO International Officer) is currently
exploring additional recruitment opportunities.
