Understanding the Basic
Principles of Lean
Lean Manufacturing was introduced to the western
world in the early 1980’s by Toyota when they began
manufacturing cars in Fremont, California. No other
production system since Henry Ford’s assembly line
has had such a tremendous impact on manufacturing
as what we now call Lean. The tools and systems are
simple and inexpensive but implementation requires a
different way of thinking.
What you will learn:
The 3 basic principals of a Lean workplace
The new role played by management
How Lean improves quality and customer service,
and reduces cost
Four hurdles you must overcome to implement Lean
Manufacturing
How you will benefi t:
5S – How to Build a Foundation
for Lean
The starting point for any Lean journey is a properly
organized workplace. 5S represents fi ve Japanese
words, Seiri, Seiton, Seison, Seiketsu and Shitsuke
which roughly translate into Sort, Shine, Set in Order,
Standardize and Sustain. The vast majority of Lean
initiatives that are currently taking place today are
5S related activities. 5S is much more than making
the shop look nice – it is a means to create or shape
organizational culture. 5S activities will improve
productivity, reduce inventories and simplify the
management of the shop. 5S is the foundation for
any Lean implementation.
What you will learn:
What 5S is and how it works
5S performance improvement and realistic
expectations
Step-by-step guidelines to implement 5S in
your workplace
3 strategies to nurture and sustain your
5S program
Visual Management –
How to Succeed with Lean
Visual Management is one of the most important
tools of Lean and is used throughout the Lean
journey. The use of Visual Management begins with
the implementation of 5S and carries through to JIT
(Just In Time), SMED (Single Minute Exchange of Die)
and all other techniques you will use on your Lean
journey. A thorough understanding and appreciation
of Visual Management is important to a successful
Lean implementation.
What you will learn:
What Visual Management is and how it works
Real world examples from California manufacturers
How Visual Management is used with 5S
How Visual Management is used with other Lean
tools
