Copenhagen

CopenhaGen
overview
Copenhagen is not only the capital of denmark,
but it is also a major regional center of culture,
business, media, science, education and shopping.
Copenhagen is the gateway to the other
scandinavian countries and is a “prototype” for
a nordic metropolitan city. the city is linked
to sweden via the Øresund rail and road bridge
bringing shoppers from malmö, southern sweden
and beyond.
Global Cities
Retail Guide
the city is growing in population and attracts visitors from all over the world for business and leisure purposes. as a
city it has been effective in becoming a city with high standards of living, happiness, job opportunities and great
shopping opportunities for everyone. it attracts many visitors for business and conferences; consistently in the
world’s top ten destinations. it is also the largest cruise port in northern europe with over 600,000 passenger
arrivals annually.
While being a metropolitan city, Copenhagen retains its character of well-preserved and beautiful architecture, with a
mix of small and medium-sized shops in the city centre; one of the things that makes Copenhagen attractive to local
shoppers and tourists. it is possible to take public transportation to most places, and all shopping can be made by
foot or by cycle. the city is forerunner for many different projects, but particularly distinguishes itself by the focus
on green economy, and this has paid off as Copenhagen has been granted the Green Capital award 2014.
Copenhagen, along with the other big danish cities of aarhus and odense, has an extremely low vacancy on its main
shopping streets and shopping centers, with demand coming from both domestic and international retailers.
key Retail areas & streets
stRØGet
strøget is on the list of top three attractions for tourists, and is the nickname for the world’s longest pedestrian shopping street
in the heart of Copenhagen. it runs from Rådhuspladsen (City hall square) to kongens nytorv and it covers frederiksberggade,
nygade, Vimmeskaftet, amagertorv and Østergade. the streets are lively, highly accessible by public transport and the pedestrian
flow is very high. The average unit size is relatively small. There are no shopping centres in the prime retail area.
frederiksberggade links Rådhuspladsen to Gammel torv. Retailers such as new Yorker, Vero moda, and monki have stores
along this high footfall section.
amagertorv and Vimmelskaftet are generally characterized by more middle-market and high-volume fashion stores. in the vicinity
of the illum department store there are a number of long established upmarket retailers such as illum bolighus and Georg Jensen.
the number of high-end brands increases along Østergade, particularly with proximity to kongens nytorv. Retailers such as
louis Vuitton, mulberry, Gianni Versace, Gucci etc. are all represented.
kØbmaGeRGade
købmagergade is also a major shopping street in the heart of Copenhagen, and is connected to strøget. købmagergade is just as
popular as strøget and offers many well-known domestic and international brands including abercrombie & fitch and benetton.
“seCondaRY aRea”
pilestræde, kronprinsensgade, Grønnegade, antoniogade, sværtegade, ny Østergade and Christian iX Gade are the popular ”off
piste” streets where the more specialized shops are located. This area is definitely an interesting retail submarket with brands
like aCne, Christian louboutin, marlboro Classics, marc by marc Jacobs, bruuns bazar, tiger of sweden, filippa k, lacoste and
many more.
shoppers’ needs.
the restaurants in Copenhagen offer everything from pizza and
hotdogs to the impressive gastronomic experiences, and 13 restaurants
have been awarded a star by the michelin Guide, which is more than
any other european City has. the world’s best restaurant, Noma,
which has been awarded 2 stars by the michelin Guide, is also located
in Copenhagen.
in Copenhagen, the restaurants are not clustered together in key areas,
but it is always possible to find good, trendy restaurants and cocktail
bars in the “off piste” areas, which are mentioned in the table. What
goes as prime locations for retail does not guarantee a good business
for restaurants, as danes do not mind to walk in the cosy atmosphere
in the secondary areas to find the food they crave.
