Forensics At Marysville<br />

VHHS Journalism<br />

Using skill and determination<br />

the VHHS Forensics students<br />

made a fantastic breakthrough<br />

at the Marysville meet<br />

on February the 22nd. VHHS<br />

forensics team placed 7th out<br />

of the 21 schools that attended;<br />

this was the highest placement<br />

that Valley Heights has had in<br />

Marysville in the past few<br />

Daniel John Schwarz, 23,<br />

formerly of Home, KS, died<br />

Sunday, March 4, 2012 from<br />

injuries in a one-vehicle acci-<br />

Audine Ekberg, 89, longtime<br />

resident of Manhattan, KS,<br />

died Monday, February 27,<br />

2012 at the Point Lookout<br />

Nursing & Rehab Facility in<br />

Hollister, MO.<br />

A graveside funeral service<br />

will be held at 2:00 p.m.,<br />

Friday, March 2, at the Sunset<br />

Cemetery, Manhattan, KS.<br />

Audine was born December<br />

5, 1922 at Axtell, KS, the<br />

years. The Forensics coach<br />

Lynette Steele-Coon states “the<br />

Marysville meet is a good way<br />

to get our feet on the ground<br />

after TVL.” Valley Heights participated<br />

in three main events:<br />

IDA, Prose, and Poetry.<br />

Vanessa Moctezuma Fr. and<br />

Tommy Tryon Sr. worked<br />

together for the first time and<br />

achieved 6th place ranking in<br />

IDA- an improvised skit with<br />

dent in rural Nemaha County.<br />

Visitation will be Wednesday<br />

from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. at<br />

Kinsley Mortuary in<br />

Marysville.<br />

A rosary service will be held<br />

at 7 p.m., Wednesday, at St.<br />

Gregory’s Catholic Church in<br />

Marysville.<br />

Mass of Christian Burial will<br />

be held at 10:30 a.m.,<br />

Thursday, March 8, at St.<br />

Gregory’s Catholic Church.<br />

Burial will be in the church<br />

cemetery.<br />

1988, at Marysville, KS, son of<br />

David and Geraldine (Haupt)<br />

Lohmeyer, 92, died March 2,<br />

2012, at Journey House<br />

Hospice in Lincoln, NE.<br />

A funeral service will be held<br />

at 2 p.m., Saturday, March 10,<br />

at Good Shepherd Lutheran<br />

Church in Washington.<br />

Arthur was born October 17,<br />

1919, in Linn, KS, the son of<br />

Albert Fredrick and Marie<br />

Sophia (Laue) Lohmeyer.<br />

Art was confirmed and graduated<br />

from the Zion Lutheran<br />

Church and School in Linn in<br />

1933. After three semesters at<br />

Linn High School the Great<br />

Depression forced him to hire<br />

out as a farm hand. He returned<br />

to school after Pearl Harbor to<br />

learn sheet metal repair, and<br />

joined the Army Air Force as an<br />

aircraft repairman. He spent the<br />

war in India and China repairing<br />

airplanes for the 374th<br />

Bomber Squadron, 308th<br />

Group.<br />

On August 17, 1941, he married<br />

Mildred Elizabeth Loges,<br />

daughter of Henry and Anna<br />

Loges of Hanover.<br />

Art opened Lohmeyer<br />

Blacksmith and Welding Shop<br />

on Highway 36 in Washington<br />

in 1948, where he worked until<br />

his retirement. He took pride in<br />

Mary "Elaine" Regnier<br />

Mary "Elaine" Regnier, 92,<br />

of Beattie, KS, died March 3,<br />

2012 at Cambridge Place in<br />

Marysville.<br />

Visitation will be Monday,<br />

March 5, from 10 a.m. until 9<br />

p.m. at Kinsley Mortuary in<br />

Marysville. The family will<br />

receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m.<br />

A funeral service will be held<br />

at 10 a.m., Tuesday, March 6, at<br />

the Beattie United Methodist<br />

Church. Rev. Norma Jeane<br />

Miller will officiate.<br />

Janet Plegge will play the<br />

organ while Jennifer Gee sings<br />

“How Great Thou Art” and “In<br />

the Garden.”<br />

The pallbearers will be<br />

Burial will be in the Beattie<br />

Elaine was born September<br />

26, 1919, south of Beattie, to<br />

daughter of Clifford and<br />

Edythe (Young) McKee. After<br />

growing up and attending<br />

school at Summerfield, KS, she<br />

moved to Manhattan, KS. She<br />

worked as a Licensed Practical<br />

Nurse at the Manhattan<br />

Hospital and in private care.<br />

Audine took great pride in<br />

caring for her home both inside<br />

and outside. She enjoyed yard<br />

work, taking care of the garden<br />

which each group pair has three<br />

categories: setting, characters,<br />

and situation. In each category<br />

the group draws three and picks<br />

the best draw for the group.<br />

Alex Laughlin Jr., had a<br />

piece entered into the prose<br />

competition called All Summer<br />

in a Day by Ray Bradbury,<br />

earning him 2nd place.<br />

Laughlin’s prose piece is about<br />

a little girl with the name<br />

ticeship as a Boilermaker for<br />

Local #83 at D&Z Co. He was<br />

to graduate in July to attain<br />

Journeymen Boilermaker. He<br />

just recently moved to<br />

Havensville.<br />

In 2007, he graduated from<br />

Marysville High School. He<br />

love to played baseball, later<br />

softball, golf and enjoyed many<br />

outdoor activities. In high<br />

school he worked for Fisher<br />

Rocks in Home, KS.<br />

He was a member of St.<br />

Gregory’s Catholic Church and<br />

was a 1st Degree Knight’s Of<br />

Columbus.<br />

Survivors include his parents,<br />

David and Gerry<br />

Schwarz, Home; sisters, Ginny<br />

being able to repair broken<br />

equipment and often reinforcing<br />

it to stronger than new condition.<br />

He enjoyed people,<br />

solving their problems and getting<br />

them back to work.<br />

Art had a large garden to<br />

help feed his family thanks to<br />

the Mildred’s canning skills.<br />

He was a member of Good<br />

Shepherd Lutheran Church,<br />

enjoyed bowling, fishing, hunting<br />

volunteering at Kansas<br />

Specialty Dog, and being a part<br />

of the community of<br />

Washington. He was also a<br />

member of the American<br />

Legion and Veterans of Foreign<br />

Wars.<br />

After they retired, Art and<br />

Mildred enjoyed camping and<br />

wintered in Yuma, AZ, where<br />

they developed friendships<br />

with the “Snowbirds” who<br />

flocked there.<br />

Art and Mildred moved to<br />

John and Lula May DeVault<br />

Hadorn. She attended Life<br />

Grade School and graduated<br />

from Marysville High School<br />

in 1937.<br />

She worked for Coe Seed<br />

Co., of Topeka, later the Civil<br />

Service, Fort Leavenworth<br />

school system for 15 years,<br />

taught school north of Beattie<br />

and Life School.<br />

Elaine was a member of<br />

Eastern Star, Snipe Creek Club,<br />

United Methodist Church and<br />

Womens Club, Post Script<br />

Club, and volunteered at the<br />

library and Marshall County<br />

Historical Society.<br />

In 1946, she married Wesley<br />

Hiatt. She later married Evert<br />

Regnier.<br />

and flowers, and helping others<br />

with their spring cleaning. She<br />

also enjoyed gathering with<br />

friends and playing cards.<br />

She was a member of Trinity<br />

Presbyterian Church and the<br />

Women’s Fellowship Group.<br />

Survivors include her daughter,<br />

Carol Zuercher, Branson,<br />

MO; son, Kent Ekberg,<br />

Manhattan; sister, Marge<br />

Larkin, Marysville; and four<br />

Kenneth L. Sells, Agent<br />

Margot who lives on the planet<br />

Venus. Margot knows that<br />

today was the day that the sun<br />

was going to shine for the first<br />

time in seven years.<br />

VHHS dominated the Poetry<br />

event taking the top three highest<br />

scores. Katie Kinzel Sr.<br />

placed 3rd in poetry. Jr. Jessie<br />

Zidek places 5th and Jr. Brooke<br />

Claycamp placed 6th in the<br />

poetry event. The next meet for<br />

NE; nephew, Bryan Scott,<br />

He was preceded in death by<br />

his grandfather, Donald Haupt;<br />

uncle, Ed Brown; and cousins,<br />

Paula Brown and Kelsey<br />

Kempkes.<br />
