A cultural clash

transformed into pure art

Already at the age of 13, Åsa Ekström decided to become

a “mangaka”, a cartoonist inspired by the Japanese way of

creating comic-strip drawings (manga). After three years

at the Centre for Cartoon studies in Malmö, sweden, and

working as an assistant at a cartoon studio in Japan, she

released her first short 6-page comic in the comic paper

Manga Mania in 2004.

A scary assignment

Even though Åsa has done plenty of publications and

exhibitions since then, designing textiles was a new

experience to her. When iKEA contacted her she almost

panicked. And it got even worse when she was told that no

one was allowed to know about the assignment.

“I started to work with all the doors shut and

at one point I seem to remember doing my

drawings under a blanket!”, she says. But

newly back from Japan with lots of energy

and inspiration in her luggage, the

initial paranoia soon vanished and

was replaced by a great enthusiasm.

A proper mishmash

Manga is kind of a language that is

very efficient for storytelling. “It’s

filled with illustrative artifices that

help mediate feelings in a direct and

straightforward way”, Åsa explains.

that’s why the drawings are allowed to take up such a great

deal of space in manga comics.

As it does on the fabric ChARlOttA tECKning! “My idea

is that the observer should find his or her own story in the

three panels”, Åsa says. The city is a fictitious mix of wellknown

buildings in scandinavia. And there, among the

houses, stands godzilla, the Japanese monster. “It’s Sergel’s

Square in Stockholm that’s getting fried”, Åsa reveals with a

playful smile on her face.

With the motif on ChARlOttA BlOCK, Åsa shows her love

of tokyo, the capital city of Japan. “It’s a great city and

dressed in its garb of neon it becomes almost magic”, she

says.

When Åsa designed ChARlOttA hiMMEl she found her

inspiration in Japanese woodcuts called ukiyo-e. Ukiyo-e

means “pictures of a floating world” and it’s an art form that

has existed in Japan since the seventeenth century.

Just like the other fabrics in the ChARlOttA collection,

ChARlOttA MÄRKE is a mix of scandinavia and Japan. “Here

I’ve mixed Japanese tattooing with Scandinavian motifs. A

girl in manga style dressed in a Swedish folk costume and a

Viking made with an old-world Japanese mask used on stage

in Noh plays as a model”, Åsa explains.

last ChARlOttA Vild, Åsa’s own favourite. not least

because of “the miracle of origami, Japanese paper art”,

as Åsa puts it. she wanted to mix this ancient, traditionbound,

art form with something in this context extremely

untraditional, namely scandinavian animals. in Åsa’s opinion

this way of mixing describes the Japanese culture in a very

striking way; tradition alongside new thinking, respect and

disrespect in harmony. “I myself love jellyfish, but it’s very

difficult to fold an origami jellyfish, I know, because I’ve

really tried”, Åsa laughs.

Something for everyone

Åsa want her fabrics to inspire and awake the creativeness

in the viewer. “Perhaps you can do a tea cosy with origami

animals – or cut out a samurai Viking and pin it on a bag.

Why not sew pillowcases from the motifs of CHARLOTTA

TECKNING! If you change place on the pillows the story will

change, too”, brainstorms Åsa.

“I had great fun designing this collection and I hope the

playfulness and joy have rubbed off on the textiles”, she

continues.

Even if younger generations might recognise the source of

the patterns more easily, Åsa is convinced the textiles can

be part of many homes. ′The CHARLOTTA collection is very

diverse and I believe there is something for everyone to

enjoy”.

really fun for me to work with a Japanese theme. We share the same

clean, scaled-down shapes and calm colours. With the HENNY collection

“When I was designing the RENATE collection I was inspired by

springtime; by new buds in bloom, bursting into life with vibrant colour.

I wanted the collection to be happy and inviting, with fields and garlands

of beautiful flowers. I drew and painted flowers in different scales -

some in a free, abstract style, others more detailed. I was particularly

inspired by Dahlias. Their bright colours and bold structures have a

starburst quality and echo the idea of springtime exploding into life.”

“When I designed SJÖVIK table and buffet I wanted to make beautiful

and functional furniture with a modern, Scandinavian look. The table

has simple lines and a very durable surface – and the buffet I see as

the Nordic equivalent of the traditional china cabinet. The pattern on the

doors I borrowed from the round red IKEA PS rug that I also designed.

And inside the buffet, there’s plenty of storage room. These are

practical furniture pieces that are a bit playful at the same time.”
