Bellevue College’s popular Project Management
Certificate Program that prepares
students for the Project Management Institute
(PMI) certification exam has recently
undergone an overhaul to meet the newest
edition of global standards for project
managers, the Project Management Body of
Knowledge (PMBOK), 5th Edition. The Project
Management certificate was revamped
to incorporate the updates reflected in the
PMBOK, 5th Edition, provide a logical organization
to new electives, and simplify the
layout of the certificate for ease of completion.
This update to the Project Management
certificate program is complete; please refer
to the summer schedule of classes for dates
and times. The redesign included a great
deal of planning with instructional designers,
subject matter experts, and working
project managers who use the PMBOK, 5th
Edition, guaranteeing the certificate will
prepare students for project management in
the modern workplace. Bellevue College also
put together an interdisciplinary board to
talked about what course content should
look like,” explains Shara Tscheulin, a program
manager for professional programs.
“[We additionally] met with a small focus
group of students and asked them what
would they like to see changed in the certificate,”
From the turnout at Vino at the Landing
on opening day, you’d think that a known
successful artist was exhibiting their work.
The cozy wine bar was packed to capacity,
mostly by people who’d wandered in to see
what was making Vino bustle. They were
greeted by good company and the artwork
of participants in Bellevue College’s “Shoot
to Show” course, all helmed by prolific
teacher Ray Pfortner. A renowned photographer
in his own right with a passion for
spreading the joy of photography to people
who may have never considered themselves
artists, Ray’s students were in great form as
they sold their prints to interested buyers.
The event was the capstone of the quarter
long course – the “show” of Shoot to Show.
A second showing is now available at North
Campus. The Show has even caught the attention
of BC’s new president Dave Ruhl who
has bought 5 student prints to decorate his
new office. With the Vino gala set to become
a yearly fixture for the program, we talked
to Ray and some of the people who helped
make Shoot to Show such a success.
crucial in
the decision to
reclassify electives.
The update to the PMBOK, 5th Edition
introduced new topics as well as some
basic reorganization. A new knowledge
area called “Project Stakeholder Management”
was added to bring the number of
knowledge areas to ten, as well as adding
four new planning processes. The updates
that Bellevue College incorporated will provide
students with the most current project
management practices.
sense of the word, Ray’s been a partner at
a stock photo agency, is represented by
Getty, and has sold his photos to National
Geographic, Shooters, and other publications
of note. After switching from a career in
government and environmental protection
a native son of Seattle and quite well known,”
Ray explains, “he’s in the top 20 nature photographers
as no surprise then that Ray understands
