Second-generation Mercedes CLS

revealed ahead of Paris debut


MERCEDES-BENZ has lifted its

formal cloak of secrecy from the

second-generation CLS ahead

of its public debut at the Paris motor show

on September 30, immediately before its

European market launch.

Although the all-new 218-series CLS, which

is based on the latest E-class platform, could

then make its Australian debut at the Sydney

show on October 15, it will not go on sale here

until the second quarter of next year.

Benz says the original CLS, which has

already ceased production, created a new

vehicle category when it debuted at the 2003

Frankfurt motor show, and continues to be the

only “four-door coupe” in its class, but that

overlooks Maserati’s Quattroporte, which also

entered production in 2004 and will soon also

be replaced by a redesigned model.

Either way, both pioneering

models have since been mimicked

by a number of modern coupelike

sedans, including Porsche’s

Panamera, Aston Martin’s Rapide,

Audi’s upcoming A7 Sportback and

the production version of BMW’s

Gran Coupe concept, which will

wear either 6 or 8 Series badges.

design direction for the German

luxury brand.

“The new CLS points the way

forward for the future perceptible

design idiom of Mercedes-Benz,”

said Mercedes-Benz head of design

Professor Gorden Wagener.

“At the same time it takes its

inspiration from the great tradition

of stylish, refined sportiness

which has always been a feature

of Mercedes coupes.”

The new CLS continues its

forebear’s key design elements,

including a long bonnet, a narrow

glass area with no B-pillar,

frameless side door windows and

a dramatically sloping roofline.

At CLS range: The second-generation coupe gets a more prominent

grille and three-pointed star badge, as well as full-LED headlights.

heavily flared wheel-arches, beefy rear side

haunches and a new front-end treatment

that, like the one on the SLS AMG supercar,

features a prominent separate grille that isn’t

integrated with the bonnet and is dominated

by a massive three-pointed star badge.

Aside from large black upper, lower and

outboard air inlets – the latter highlighted by LED

daytime running light strips – the redesigned

CLS will also feature full-LED headlights, which

Mercedes says are the first to come with LED

technology to replace all traditional headlight

functions, including indicators and low and

high-beam lights for a total of 71 LEDs.

The new CLS cabin, which is more angular

and symmetrical than before, is dominated by

a high horizontal trim line that extends from

the driver’s door, over the top of the instrument

binnacle of the wrap-around cockpit to the

front passenger’s door.

There is a high-mounted central information

screen, below which on the centre stack are

two matt-galvanised air-vents, separated by a

square high-gloss analogue clock.

Mercedes says the four-seat CLS interior,

which also features hand-sewn leather

dashboard trim, will be available in five

colours, five trim designs and three leather

choices, including a 1.6mm-thick semianiline

‘Passion’ hide option.

No mechanical details have been released,

but expect engine choices to reflect those of the

E-class range, including new direct-injection

3.5-litre V6 and 4.6 and 5.5-litre twin-turbo V8

petrol engines – the latter delivering 400kW

and 800Nm in the CLS 63 AMG.

The 3.0-litre V6 turbo-diesel version is

likely to remain unavailable in Australia,

where CLS pricing currently kicks off at


$154,200 for the CLS350.

Iconic American off-roader gets a new interior for mid-life facelift


JEEP has revealed first images of its

facelifted Wrangler, which entered

production at Chrysler’s Toledo

Assembly Complex in Ohio a few weeks ago.

Biggest change is a new interior for the

upgraded 2011 Wrangler, which has been

confirmed for release in Australia early next


Chrysler Australia’s senior manager of

marketing and corporate communications,

Dean Bonthorne, said that as one of the leading

markets for Wrangler globally, Australia

would get the new Wrangler in both two-door

and Unlimited four-door guises.

“Pricing and exact availability will be

advised closer to the new model’s launch in

the first quarter of 2011,” he said.

Selected versions of both the 2011 two-door

and four-door models will introduce a new

ody-coloured removable hard-top that, like

the more upmarket interior, is designed to give

Jeep’s iconic off-roader a more ‘premium’

look and feel.

Highlights of the facelifted Wrangler’s

new cabin are “significantly upgraded” touch

surfaces, a redesigned instrument panel

and centre stack, new storage areas and the

addition of larger rear windows and heated/

power mirrors.

New steering wheel controls are designed

to allow drivers to operate the radio, cruise

control, hands-free phone and other vehicle

functions without removing their hands from

the tiller, while a new USB interface connects

to storage devices including thumb drives and

most MP3 players for use with the vehicle’s

Media Centre, which now includes streaming

Bluetooth audio.

The larger rear windows aim to improve

visibility, while the new centre stack is said to

be easier to reach and operate than before.

New electric mirrors, upgraded door

armrests and new lockable console also

help improve driver comfort and passenger

Wranglers will also come with the

option of a new 110-volt outlet that

Rounding out the 2011 Wrangler interior

– which continues to feature hex-head bolts

throughout, but is claimed to be significantly

quieter after acoustic work for the upgraded

model – is a new “Jeep, Since 1941” inlay for

the new passenger grab-handle.

A range of new exterior paint colours –

including Detonator Yellow, Deep Cherry

Red, Sahara Tan, Cosmos Blue and Bright

White – will complement the new bodycolour


CEO of Chrysler Group’s Jeep brand, Mike

Manley, said the iconic Jeep Wrangler keeps

getting better with age.

“While retaining unmatched, legendary

capability, the 2011 Jeep Wrangler boasts an

all-new interior that delivers a host of

comfort, convenience and versatility

features,” he said.

“In addition, Sahara models now feature a

stunning, all-new body-colour hard-top for

customers looking for a Jeep Wrangler with a

more premium appearance.”

No mechanical changes have been made to

the 2011 Wrangler, which should bring the last

change to the current JK-series range – released

globally in 2007 – before it is replaced with an

all-new model by 2013.

Jeep sales in Australia are up by more than

half this year, thanks largely to the current

Wrangler’s stellar success in 2010. Chrysler

Australia has sold more than 1600 examples

of the Wrangler here this year (up a massive

82 per cent over 2009 figures), easily making

it the North American car-maker’s single best-


selling model in Australia.

OFFICIALLY this is simply a show

car designed to celebrate Jaguar’s

75th anniversary this year, but the

XJ75 Platinum Concept clearly previews the

Compare, Select and Save

model that will top the British brand’s new XJ

range – the XJR.

Jaguar says the one-off XJ75, which was

revealed at the famed Pebble Beach Concours

D’Elegance in California in mid-August, is

also the first demonstration of the “design

customisation potential” of its new XJ limousine,

which was launched in Australia in July.

that are not scheduled to be sold here (the XF

and rear bumpers, beefy side skirts and a

subtle rear spoiler, which echo the highperformance

look of the smaller XFR

wheels with brushed contrast finish and

subtle rear spoiler, the XJ75’s body kit is

likely to be standard on the XJR but may

also be available as a sports package on

said the XJ75 Platinum Concept emphasises

the striking proportion and presence of the new

XJ, with a distilled black and white theme that

conjured up “the sense of precious platinum”.

“At the same time, the pure sporting character

of XJ is brought to the fore by keeping the car’s

clean graphic approach and further lowering

its stance,” said Mr Taylor.

“On the inside, we played up the XJ’s

combination of high-end materials and British

flair to really have some fun.

“The XJ75 Platinum Concept is a design

exercise that shows our vision of customisation

as an inspiration for those enthusiasts who

have a taste for strong individuality and visual

confidence in their luxury automobiles.”

Under the bonnet of the XJ75 lurks the same

lusty supercharged 5.0-litre V8 that powers the

XJ Supercharged Portfolio, putting out 346kW

of power and 575Nm of torque, but expect an

even higher-performance version of Jaguar’s

latest direct-injection blown V8 – with power

and torque to eclipse the 375kW/625Nm

outputs of the XFR, XKR and XJ Supersports

– to motivate the production XJR.

Concept celebrated Jaguar's 75th Anniversary,

highlighting the uniqueness of the XJ.

“The XJ is thoroughly modern, and

captures the innovative and daring character

that our founder Sir William Lyons built into

every Jaguar,” said Mr O’Driscoll. “And the

design team clearly had some fun making

their first one-of-a-kind XJ design concept

in that spirit.”

Expect the production XJR to be revealed

at the Paris motor show on September 30,

before joining the new XJ line-up at the end

BMW-powered Eva GT to become

Morgan’s first four-seater


BRITAIN’S historic Morgan marque

unveiled its sleek new Eva GT sportscar

at Pebble Beach in August, two months

after the car’s dramatic silhouette was first

revealed with an alluring teaser image.

The four-seater Eva GT is a luxury two-door

grand tourer based on a development of the same

lightweight bonded aluminium chassis that

underpins Morgan’s AeromaxSupersports.

It will go production from mid-2012 at

Morgan Motor Company’s UK factory in

Malvern, Worcestershire, where its cars have

been hand-built since 1909.

Like the Aeromax, the Eva GT continues

Morgan’s technical collaboration with BMW,

which will donate its famed six-cylinder petrol

engine for the first time. The direct-injection

twin-turbo petrol straight-six meets Euro 6

emissions standards and produces 225kW of

power and 400Nm of torque.

It is wrapped in aircraft-style superformed

aluminium body panels and features a fourwheel

independent suspension system.

twin-turbo six-cylinder version of its stylish droptop

that is just as fast in a straight line as its M3

poster car. The awkwardly-named Z4 sDrive35is

Mazda reveals Paris wares

MAZDA is about a week away from deciding its

new styling direction under new design chief Ikuo

Maeda, who will publicly present the first concept

to wear the as-yet-unnamed design theme at the

Paris motor show on September 30.


TRUE to the form that wowed crowds at the 2007

Frankfurt motor show, Mitsubishi’s new ASX compact

crossover has arrived in Australia with edgy styling,

a classy yet flexible interior and enough drivetrain

combinations to suit all tastes, including a brilliant

new 1.8-litre turbo-diesel.


Top of the Morgan: Eva GT shows off

its curves from every angle.

The Eva GT is also the first Morgan to offer

seating for four passengers and their luggage,

its proper two-plus-two cabin layout and

generous boot making it more practical than

any Aero-series model that preceded it.

The Morgan Motor Company says the Eva

GT is designed to serve as both everyday

family transport and luxury GT for weekend

use, even if its rear seats were designed only

for occasional adult use.

The Eva GT will be shorter (and more

affordable) than the AeromaxSupersports

at 4.7 metres long, 1.8 metres wide and 1.2

metres high. It weighs just 1250kg, but will

come with electronic stability control, ABS

brakes, Xenon headlights, satellite-navigation

and multi-stage airbags.

Combined with either a six-speed manual

gearbox or a ZF six-speed automatic

transmission, the Eva GT should be good

for 0-100km/h acceleration in about 4.5

seconds, a top speed of 273km/h, average

fuel consumption of around 7.0L/100km and

CO2 emissions of about 200g/km.

Morgan is now taking orders worldwide for

an allocated build slot within a limited initial

production run of only 100 vehicles, with

manufacture to commence in mid-2012 and

first deliveries being made soon afterwards.

Expect the rear-drive Eva GT to be priced

upwards of $200,000 – but below the

$375,000 limited-edition Aero SuperSports

flagship – by the time first deliveries take

place here in late 2012. MOTOR
