Menu
www.contiki.com/forums
Trying new food and letting
your tummy take over is
half the fun of visiting a
new country.
No trip would be complete
without sampling at least a few
of the local delicacies like
escargot in Paris, goulash in
Hungary and fondue in Switzerland.
And with a virtual, all-you-can-eat smorgasbord of scrumptious international
cuisine, we promise Europe’s kitchens and street vendors will leave you
begging for more.
Providing breakfast and many dinners, we’ll make sure you get your fill of
fresh, seasonal produce but still give you the opportunity to indulge in
mouthwatering meals at local eateries in your free time.
Mix it up with our special optional dinners and free evenings, so you can tuck
into a Tuscan feast or wash down a spicy paella with a glass of sangria in
Spain – there’s a huge variety to choose from.
Some tour operators include lunch. We have the experience to know that this
doesn’t work. You’ve told us you prefer being out and about, sampling the
local delights as well as maximising your free time and enjoyment, rather than
scrambling back for a communal lunch. So we’ve listened and are happy to
leave lunch to you.
Please Note: If you have any special dietary requests please make these known at the time of
booking. Although we’ll bend over backwards to make sure it happens, standards can sometimes
vary from place to place. Unfortunately we can’t be held responsible for local meals that don’t
meet your exact requirements. It’s all part of the adventure!
For more information refer to: www.contiki.com/contikiexperience
Charging on the go!
We’ve fitted the vast majority of our coaches (excluding
regional tours of Italy, Spain & Egypt) with charging
units to make sure you never have a dead battery again!
iPods, MP3 players, whatever you’ve got, you can
charge it onboard, just don’t forget to bring your Europe
and UK plug adaptors.
There are also plenty of internet cafes all across Europe to make sure
you stay connected on the road.
Your Free Time
Here’s just a taste of what
you can get up to
We know everyone is different, so in your free time you’ll have a choice to
enhance your itinerary with Contiki’s ‘Optional Activities and Evenings Out’.
Based on what our past travellers have asked for, they’re called Optionals as
you have a choice to opt in or opt out and do exactly as you wish.
Our exciting optional activities are the stuff memories are made of and
will instantly transform your fantastic European holiday into an
unforgettable experience.
There’s something for everyone, our extras blend culture and adventure and
include everything from a Spanish flamenco show, to a gondola ride in Venice
What’s on offer and how much does it cost?
When do I choose and how do I pay?
Optionals are arranged and paid for on tour, not beforehand. By leaving
the final decisions until then, you'll have the following benefits:
You’ll be able to choose what interests you, at the same time as your
You'll get great value, as we’ve negotiated the best rates for each Optional.
take care of all the arrangements.
Some activities are seasonal whilst others are weather dependent.
IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ
Some of these activities involve outdoor adventure and can be physically demanding, so
there’s always an element of risk. You should make your own decisions about these activities
and only participate in activities that you feel comfortable you can handle. It’s also a good idea
to check that your insurance includes your participation in adventure activities.
Make a Difference
Travelling with Contiki is an adventure – new places, amazing people and what’s
even better is that we can do our bit to protect the planet along the way so that
those who follow will also have plenty to enjoy.
Our Conservation Foundation
Contiki has made a significant commitment to the environment by being a part of establishing The Leading
Travel Companies Conservation Foundation, a not-for-profit organisation that helps people and places in
need. Our group of companies is donating US$1 million per year to fund much-needed conservation,
community and sustainable tourism projects that will help create and sustain a better world.
The Foundation’s panel of expert sustainable tourism and conservation advisors, will help select a number of
projects annually to ensure every single dollar goes to projects that will truly make a difference. Visit
contiki.com/responsibletravel for more information on our Foundation.
We’re a greener way to travel
Contiki’s coaches are one of the most environmentally friendly ways to travel so you can breathe easy that your
footprint will be a little lighter too. Contiki’s coaches are among the best in Europe and by continually updating
our fleet we ensure that not only do you travel in style but that our engines are fuel efficient & environmentally
friendly too. You’ll be happy to know coach travel emits less carbon emissions and other harmful greenhouse
gases per passenger than most other forms of transport including cars or trains. Check out the facts…
Travel carbon neutral and reduce your footprint
There is a lot you can do to make a difference while traveling. Small things like switching off air-conditioning
and taking shorter showers can save both energy & water. Or refilling your drink bottle instead of buying a new
one each day – it all adds up!
You can choose to travel carbon neutral and offset the carbon emissions from your flight, accommodation or
tour, or all of the above! By paying a small contribution, you’ll be supporting sustainable energy projects that
work to reduce the harmful greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. See www.contiki.com/responsibletravel
for more on offsetting your travel.
Contiki’s committed to making a difference
We’re working with our hotel and various other partners around the world to continue to find ways to save energy
and reduce resource consumption and waste.
Not only do we think globally, but we act locally within our regional offices with initiatives such as introducing
comprehensive recycling schemes and being proactive with educating our staff how they can ‘make a difference’ to
the environment both at work and at home.
One exciting program we have launched in 2008 is our Staff Volunteer Program where Contiki encourages each team
member to select a charity of their choice and gives them 2 work days per year to get out there and lend a hand.
Our Company believes and is committed to the ecological and economical use of raw material and the re-use of
existing resources. This brochure has been printed on environmentally friendly paper certified by Programme
for the Endorsement of Forest Certification Schemes (PEFC) meaning the pulp used for its production
originates from well managed forests and other controlled sources.
Please either pass this brochure on to
someone else when finished, or recycle it.
Where You Stay
What can you expect from a
Contiki hotel?
We use Superior Tourist Class hotels throughout
Europe. The focus is on location and quality coupled
with our commitment to value for money. You’ll never
sights in our hotels. As a special treat in certain cities
you will enjoy something really special...see below.
Where you stay
Choice hotels and resorts
When staying in Europe’s capitals location is all important. We’ve chosen
Superior Tourist Class hotels throughout the continent meaning you’ll be
right where you want to be – close enough to the action and surrounded by
a unique array of sights and sounds.
Keeping the holiday comfort
Relax in style – our hotels are there to make sure you never forget you’re on
holiday. After a day of exploring and adventure there’s no better way to
unwind than chilling out in the restaurant or bar. All our rooms come
complete with private facilities and a selection of modern conveniences.
More than a trip
In addition to all this, we offer you the chance to spend the night at one of
our unique night-stops located across Europe. Imagine spending the night
on a Swiss mountain top, in a Four Star Plus resort or on a Nile cruise...
hard we know, guess you have to be there!
Don’t forget ski
On ski holidays you stay in a traditional Gasthof in the heart of the Austrian
Tyrol. Idyllic, great value and close to the best skiing. For more details see p.36
Eventhotel Pyramide
Special hotels and resorts
Mount Pilatus
At an elevation of some 2,100m (6890ft) above sea level, towering above
the beautiful city of Lucerne, is Europe’s highest hotel – the Bellevue.
From the top of Mt Pilatus, there’s a rare opportunity to view awe-inspiring
panoramas: the Swiss Alps form a breathtaking backdrop to the sensational
surrounding lakeland region.
How do you reach the Bellevue, Mt Pilatus? Take a romantic gondola ride
above the Alpine meadows before changing to the aerial cable-car for a
final thrilling trip to the summit. Unforgettable!
Eventhotel Pyramide, Vienna
The inspired Eventhotel Pyramide is an attraction in itself. This gigantic
glass pyramid is set in lavish landscaped gardens only 25 minutes from
central Vienna.
Relax and enjoy deluxe rooms with stereo radio, satellite TV and luxury
bathrooms or simply spend your time being pampered in the ‘wellness’ centre.
Its sauna, steam baths and massages will be sure to keep you refreshed.
Surrounded by shops, restaurants and bars as well as boasting a free on-site
internet facility, your stay in Austria will be everything but stressful!
TWIN SHARE: Guaranteed twin bedded rooms every night
SINGLE: A room to yourself every night (limited numbers available on
regardless.
Stay Longer
Why not spend a few extra days in Europe before or after your tour? We’ve negotiated special
rates for you to take advantage of.
relaxed atmosphere. It is slightly quieter
Brochure
authenticity
We have put a great deal of effort into
producing this brochure. The
information given and literature
produced by Contiki has been
compiled with care and is published in
good faith. Sometimes, because of
circumstances outside our control, we
have to alter some excursions due to
seasonal closing or repairs to buildings,
etc., especially early or late in the
season. If this happens, alternative
excursions will be arranged.
How much luggage
can I bring?
On our tours, luggage is restricted to a
maximum suitcase size of 73cm x
50cm x 25cm (29" x 20" x 10") and
maximum weight of 20 kg (44lbs) plus
one small hand/day bag that can go on
the coach with you.
NO EXTERNAL METAL FRAME
BACKPACKS PLEASE, their bulky
shape makes coach packing difficult.
Contiki reserves the right to refuse to
accept larger suitcases on tour.
On Ski Holidays you may bring one pair
of ski boots and skis or a snowboard.
Any luggage over the restricted size or
amount can be stored with Contiki in
London at a nominal charge. Baggage
is carried at the owner’s risk and
baggage insurance is strongly
recommended.
Do I need
vaccinations?
At the time this brochure went to
press (July 2008), no vaccinations were
necessary. However, it is wise to check
up-to-date information with your
travel agent prior to departure.
Don’t forget to bring with you any
medication that you may require
en route, eg. antihistamines, antibiotics.
While Canadian citizens do not require visas for most countries in Europe there are some
countries such as Russia, Jordan, Turkey and Egypt that do require Canadians to obtain
visas. Depending on your citizenship, you may require a visa to enter certain countries
included in your tour. You are fully responsible for obtaining all necessary visas prior to the
departure of your tour. Contiki is not legally permitted to knowingly allow anybody who
does not have a valid visa to join a tour. Consult your travel agent to determine which visas
you require and how to obtain them.
Multiple Entry Visas. Some of our tours enter a country more than once. If you require
a visa for that country, it must be a Multiple Entry Visa if you are travelling on the
following tour:
Tour Name . . .Countries entered twice Important:
Where will I stay?
TOURING HOLIDAYS:
Accommodation is in superior tourist class hotels, special resorts, ships and trains.
These are described on page 10 and on individual tour pages. On trains in Egypt,
two people share a two-berth couchette and facilities are shared. Other train
journeys are as detailed in individual
itineraries. On overnight ferries, 2/4- berth
cabins with facilities are provided. Depending
on the numbers and configuration on your tour,
availability of singles can sometimes be limited
in some locations. Due to the environmental
and historical constraints imposed by local
authorities, rooms in the Victorian section of
the Mt Pilatus complex do not have private
facilities. Any tour staying overnight on Mt
Pilatus may be accommodated in this section if
space is limited. On certain occasions,
alternative hotels to those listed in this
brochure may be used. Whilst it is the
Company’s intention to use hotels of a similar
standard and location, no liability can be
accepted for any variation of either.
war, riots, civil strife, closure of airports or ports,
industrial disputes, terrorist activity, natural and nuclear
disasters, fire, epidemic or health risk, Acts of God,
arrangements affected due to our cancellations or
rescheduling of any tour departure.
4. VACATION DETAILS AND CONDITIONS
4.1 The information in our brochure is correct to the best
(July 2008) but we cannot guarantee that any item or
amenity mentioned will be available especially where we
have no direct control over it.
YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES
1. BOOKING YOUR VACATION
1.1 In order to reserve your vacation, a deposit of C$200,
per person per tour, or the full amount payable if booking
is made within 45 days of departure from Canada, must
be submitted to Contiki within 7 days in respect of that
vacation. This payment is in addition to any deposit
required by your travel agent. The deposit is accepted as
a first installment of the vacation price by Contiki only
once the booking has been confirmed in writing by
Contiki or your travel agent. The initial deposit of C$200
per person must be made by credit card.
1.2 Your land reservation will be confirmed on receipt of
a non refundable deposit of C$200 per person, per tour
which must be within 7 days of booking or the
reservation will automatically be cancelled.
1.3 Any special meal requirements will be made on a
request basis only. Contiki cannot guarantee special meal
requests nor will it assume any responsibility or liability if
clients’ special meal requirements are not fulfilled.
1.4 Travel documents and instructions for joining your
tour will be sent to you approximately 21 days before
departure (provided full payment has been received).
If final payment is not received when due, costs to courier
documents will be the responsibility of the Travel Agent.
2. PAYING THE BALANCE
2.1 The balance of the vacation price must be paid by no
later than 45 days before the scheduled vacation
departure date from Canada which shall be by the due
date stated on the confirmation issued to you by Contiki.
2.2 If payment isn’t made by the due date, Contiki may
assume that you have cancelled and cancellation charges
in accordance with clause 3 below will be levied by Contiki.
2.3 Tickets and other documents won’t be forwarded until
full payment has been received by us. Travel agency
cheques must be received within 7 business days from
the date payment is called in.
2.4 In the case of Late Bookings made within 45 days of
your departure from Canada, the full cost of the vacation
will be payable immediately on booking and we reserve
the right to provide all travel documents at the vacation
departure point.
2.5 Contiki reserves the right to cancel the booking and
apply cancellation charges should payments not be
received within the above specified periods.
2.6 Your authorization to use your Credit Card number for
deposit and/or final payment indicates your compliance
with our booking conditions, whether or not you have
actually signed the appropriate draft. Verbal authorization
of the use of your Credit Card confirms your reservation.
MasterCard, Visa and American Express are accepted.
Credit Card payments are not accepted for group
bookings. A signed sales draft is required. If you wish to
change a credit card payment after it has been processed,
change fees will apply. For security purposes, we are
required to collect the passenger’s credit card billing
address as well as the customer verification code.
3. IF YOU CANCEL
3.1 Notice of cancellation must be made in writing
to Contiki.
3.2 If you cancel, your deposit will not be refunded nor
can it be credited to any other booking.
3.3 Upon cancellation you will be liable to pay a fee to
cover the estimate of cost and expenses incurred by us in
the terms of the schedule set out hereunder. This is
expressed as a percentage of the vacation price and is
calculated as follows:
PERIOD OF NOTICE CANCELLATION FEE
Number of days prior to as % of total price
tour commencement
45 days or more notice The non-refundable deposit
plus the Travel Protection
Plan’s insurance premium
is forfeited
44-22 days: 25%
21-8 days: 30%
7-1 days: 50%
Day of departure: 100%
Where the percentage cancellation fee is less than the tour
deposit, the cancellation fee will equal loss of deposit. If
the reason for cancellation falls within the terms of any
vacation insurance policy which you hold, then any such
charges may, subject to the terms of your insurance
policy, be refunded to you by the insurance company.
3.4 Any cancellation of additional services booked prior to
and after your tour or resort booking, such as pre and
post accommodation and transfers, that are cancelled
within 14 days of the tour departure incur a 100%
cancellation fee.
3.5 These cancellation fees are in addition to any
cancellation fees that may be levied by your Travel Agent.
3.6 If flight changes are requested after the deposit has
been received, or if flights are cancelled after tickets are
issued, revision fees, change fees or Airline cancellation
fees will be applicable and will be in addition to the above
cancellation charges. In some cases, airline tickets are
100% non refundable.
4. IF YOU CHANGE YOUR BOOKING
4.1 If after your booking has been confirmed, you wish to
change to an alternate departure date or you wish to
change to a different Contiki vacation, you may do so
subject to availability and provided the new vacation date
is also in this brochure.
4.2 A fee of C$30 per person will be charged for any
revision or alteration made to a reservation after the
booking is confirmed unless the change increases the
value of the booking. A change of tour date or tour
itinerary within 45 days of departure date will be treated
as a cancellation, and normal cancellation fees will apply
except when the change is to an earlier tour departure of
equivalent or greater value in which case a C$30 per
person amendment fee will be charged.
5. VACATION DETAILS AND CONDITIONS
5.1 Please read the brochure carefully for those items
condition of Contiki accepting your booking that you
provide evidence satisfactory to Contiki (via your Travel
Agent) that you will be accompanied by an able bodied
person on the tour and provide full time such special
needs or services you may require. Contiki will not be
responsible for the failure of such person to provide same
nor for any costs and expenses incurred by you if Contiki
removes you from the tour if, in the opinion of the Tour
comply or if, in the Contiki Tour Manager’s or
Representative’s opinion, you are not compatible with the
general enjoyment and well being of other members on
the tour or the smooth operation of the vacation itself, we
reserve the right to refuse to let you continue with the
tour. Furthermore you agree that your fellow travellers
your vacation. In either event, you will be responsible for
your own repatriation and related costs and have no
claims against us.
5.5.1 You are responsible for any costs incurred as a
result of damage or excess cleaning fees related to your
immediately report any pre-existing damage in your room
to hotel/Contiki Village staff and/or a Contiki Tour
Manager as soon as it is discovered.
Representatives may take photographs and films of you
while you are on vacation and that these may be used in
our Group brochures and/or advertising or publicity
material without obtaining any further consent or payment
in respect of such photographs and/or films.
5.9 Should you have a complaint in respect of the
vacation, you should inform the Contiki Tour Manager or
Representative during the course of the vacation and if
the matter cannot be resolved after the representative’s
best endeavours to do so during the vacation, your
complaint should be made in writing to Contiki as soon as
is reasonably possible after the vacation but within 42
days thereof so that your complaint can be investigated.
Any claims made after the 42 day period will not be
considered by Contiki. If you choose to write to Contiki
via the Internet, please provide your home address so that
