Curriculum Committee Meeting
December 5, 2006
11:00a.m.
Dean’s Conference Room, 307 Scofield Hall
Wayne Vaught, Sandy Van Engelenhoven, Reggie Bassa, Andrea Drew, Dennis Merrill,
Jie Chen, Harris Mirkin, James Shephard, Max Skidmore, Steve Driever, Shannon
Jackson, Fred Liebsle, Kati Toivanen, Leah Gensheimer, Charles Wurrey
1. Approval of Minutes from November 7, 2006
2. New Courses
Political Science 424
Discussion: Harris Mirkin. The goal is to “unfreeze” or “defrost” this course.
Change wording of description: This course surveys and analyzes the literature
covering urban politics. In this class, students will gain both a theoretical
understanding and empirical grounding in the politics of America. An array of
important political, social and economic problems impact urban politics in both
traditional and contemporary fashion.
Change—Offered WS07 to Offered on demand
Approved with changes
Psychology 422
Discussion: Leah Gensheimer
Concern about grade (B) required in prerequisite. Leah would like to keep it, but
add “permission of instructor”. Course will be effective WS07. Offered—leave
this blank.
Approved
Philosophy 221
Discussion: James Shephard
Change wording of description: This course offers a philosophical examination
of ethical issues in contemporary society. Topics for discussion include ethical
conflicts arising in business and technology, engineering, healthcare, politics, and
the environment. A wide range of moral concerns addressed include reproductive
rights and technologies, warfare, capital punishment, pornography, privacy,
consumerism, euthanasia, sexuality, and animal welfare.
Approved with changes.
3. Request for Philosophy 221 to be added to General Education Requirements
Approved

4. Course Modifications
PACE
Discussion: Reggie Bassa. It was brought to his attention that the shift to
PeopleSoft could introduce problems with the distinct curricular designations for
Computer Science and Information Technology courses. Therefore PACE needs
its own designation for the six courses offered in these areas. The change is to a
CIT designation.
Approved with adjustment in prerequisite for 315P
Math 204
Instead of being offered in the Summer, this course will be offered on demand.
Approved
Philosophy 321
Discussion: Wayne Vaught. This course needs a prerequisite
Move prerequisite to correct line on form
Add new course—221 as a possible prerequisite, so it reads: Phil 210, 221, or
222
Approved
5. Recognition of Sandy Van Englenhoven’s retirement. She’s been working at
universities since 1967!! She’s ready to do something else with her time.
Congratulations Sandy!
