TEACHING NARRATIVE
11 of 23
Lecturer
Prepared: May 28, 2012
Residency Teaching: My primary teaching activity is gynecologic and breast diagnostic surgical pathology
to junior and senior pathology housestaff and fellows. The teaching is microscope-based as well as
laboratory based (gross specimen dissection). In addition, I give formal lectures on diagnostic surgical
pathology, with a focus in gynecologic and breast diseases, to the pathology housestaff as part of the
Residency Core Curriculum. I design and lead a weekly microscope-based teaching session with Surgical
Pathology Fellows and I participate in the general Surgical Pathology Unknown Slide Conferences. I also
prepare Pathology Slide Review Sets for the residents on an ad hoc basis throughout the year. My contact
as director of the Surgical Pathology Fellowship allows me to interact with the fellows at both a clinical
supervisory level and as a mentor in terms of guiding individual career interests. Finally, I work with
various residents on research projects of mine, guiding them on study design, data interpretation, and
manuscript writing.
I also direct teaching of residents and fellows in two surgery training programs here. I serve as the
Pathology Education Director for the UCSF Department of Surgery Breast Surgical Oncology Fellowship
and I also teach in the residency program of the department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive
Sciences.
Medical Student Teaching: I assist in teaching the surgical pathology component of the Medical Student
Pathology Elective (UCSF course 150.03) for students rotating on the surgical pathology service. I design
and lead a slide-based tutorial in breast or gynecologic pathology during the student rotations. I also teach
pathology laboratories to junior medical students within the School of Medicine.
Continuing Medical Education Teaching: I lecture at several continuing medical education courses at both
the national level and regional level. My major CME teaching is at the annual meeting of the United States
and Canadian Academy of Pathology (USCAP) as well as at meetings of the International Academy of
Pathology. I also lecture at the California Society of Pathologists and UCSF-Stanford Current Issues in
Anatomic Pathology annual meetings. The topics of my teaching are diagnostic breast and gynecologic
pathology.
Finally, I am co-director of the UCSF Practical Diagnostic Update in GYN and Breast Pathology, a CME
course in which I also give multiple courses in addition to directing.
RESEARCH PROGRAM
My primary research centers on clinico-pathologic correlations in women's cancer pathology (gynecologic
and breast disease). My chief interests are in 1.) pathology of hereditary gynecologic cancer 2.) new
prognostic and predictive pathologic diagnostic criteria and 2.)differential diagnostic criteria in women's
cancer pathology.
As a collaborator, I also participate in the projects of several principal investigators in women's cancer
research, including Linda Giudice MD (endometriosis), Thea Tlsty, PhD (breast cancer), Raj Dahiya, PhD
(endometrial cancer), and Shelley Hwang MD (breast cancer).

I also serve as the pathology director for the UCSF-based NIH Endometrial Biopsy Tissue Bank, under PI
Linda Giudice MD.
