A loan guaranty agreement between
Butler County and Parkersburg
Economic Development (PED)
was discussed at the Butler County
Supervisor meeting on Tuesday,
May 24.
After the tornado in 2008, PED
took a proactive response to the
devastation and built Park Plaza,
a five-unit, commercial building
located near the intersection of
Highways 57 and 14. Financing
was provided by several electric
cooperatives, guaranteed by Iowa
State Bank and Butler County.
As the October deadline
approaches for PED to pay back
the loans totaling $747,000, only
North Butler exchange students depart
By Staci Miller - Editor
Summer has arrived and for North
Butler exchange students, Carlos
Jair Nara and Tim Roeder, that
means saying goodbye to a town full
of friends, and some they call family,
that they’ve grown to love.
For nine months, the young men
have stayed with the Yerkes family
in Greene; Paul and Connie and their
sons Casey and Carter.
“[Carlos and Tim] are so upbeat
and light-hearted; they find comedy
in everything. Extremely enjoyable!
We’ll be very sad when they go,”
Connie Yerkes said.
At first…
Adjusting was hard, as Greene,
Iowa wasn’t either of the young
men’s first
choice to call
a “home away
from home”.
C a r l o s
comes from
the city of
Celaya, in the
state of Guanajuato,Mexico,
a location
with over
310,000 residents.
When
he found out
the exchange program had placed
him in Greene, Iowa, he immediately
thought, “no way, I don’t want to
go anymore,” feeling as if he’d been
placed “in the middle of nowhere.”
“Once I saw pictures of the family
and everything else…I decided to
come and try it out,” Carlos said.
Sharing in Carlos’ hesitation, Tim
Roeder is from Siegen, Germany,
a city with the population of about
100,000, said he was “depressed”
when he heard of his placement in
Greene.
“I was like, Iowa? Come on guys,”
Tim said with a smile. And then
Greene, 1,000 people, come on! But
I just had to hope for the best and it
turned out really good!”
Once they arrived…
Although both students jumped
right in, with Carlos running cross
country and Tim playing football, it
was tough in the beginning.
Being away from family and
speaking English all day – especially
in the classroom – was difficult for
them to get used to.
Also, cultural stereotypes made it
harder to build friendships.
According to Carlos, it is easier to
make friends in Mexico, as people
seem more open to him, but he stated
at North Butler, he could tell the
friendships were more sincere.
“It took me a little bit more time
to make friends, but I realized that
here, when you have friends, they’re
really true friends,” Carlos said.
“I’ve made some amazing friends...
and that is something I didn’t have
in Mexico.”
Around the house, the guys pitched
in cleaning their bathroom, bedroom
and doing laundry.
“I hope to
“It was awesome being
here; the best place ever. I
love the people, I love the
way they treated me, I
love my friends and that
is why I don’t want to go
back; I’m too happy here.”
send them
back more
capable of
helping their
family…more
aware,” Connie
said
During their
stay in the
states, Carlos
and Tim got
to travel to the
Black Hills,
Chicago, and
Minnesota to name a few.
When asked what their favorite
memory was, neither of them could
think of just one.
“I saw a lot and experienced a lot,”
said Tim. “It was a great year.”
Now…
Both young men will return home
and finish school, as Carlos has two
more years of high school and Tim
will complete classes in Germany
equivalent to college courses in the
States.
Tim’s goals include one day becoming
a pilot and Carlos plans to
return to the U.S. to attend college
to study business so he can open a
coffee shop.
Carlos said, “It was awesome being
here; the best place ever. I love
the people, I love the way they treated
me, I love my friends and that is
why I don’t want to go back; I’m too
happy here.”
Tim said, “It was kind of easy to
leave Germany because I knew I
Let’s do it for our kids!
If there was only one thing I learned
from my years in the classroom (and
believe there were A LOT!) it would
be to NEVER, EVER underestimate
the power of a parent, particularly
the power of a mother.
While I’m just sure my sons-inlaw
and daughter-in-law would say
I am pretty easy to get along with (at
least I hope they would say that!) I
know when someone did something
to one of my offspring that I didn’t
particularly care for, I usually let
them know it! I never approached
one of their coaches asking why
my kids weren’t starting or at least
playing (I’m afraid they might take
after their mother who is not very
talented in any sport! I am however,
holding out for that archery thing!).
I was told by one coach, through my
daughter, to stop giving her the “evil
glare”. If she was busy coaching,
how would she know I was giving
her any kind of glare? My kids all
grew up to be great adults and I like
to think my husband and I had a little
to do with that!
I’m sure their years in 4-H had
equal influence in their lives. From
my viewpoint, 4-H is the ONLY
educational organization that allows
kids to not only learn a skill, whether
it’s speaking in front of a group,
keeping records on a livestock
project or leading on council, but
to also allow them to actually put
that skill into practice and change
behavior. This is a HUGE part
of 4-H – a high degree of handson
learning and then carrying that
learning into the community to
make a difference. In a recent study
done by Iowa State University (the
2008 Iowa 4-H Youth Citizenship,
Leadership and Communication
Self-Assessment Research Study)
scores in citizenship, leadership and
communication all reported over a
65% improvement, many over 70%,
following their years in 4-H.
Now this may just be frustration
on my part, but I’d like to know how
we can get more kids to actively take
part in our organization since we
know they will; practice citizenship,
leadership and communication
skills, be a positive influence on
others, make a difference in their
communities, learn necessary
teamwork skills and have their basic
A Correction (that’s good news!)
I’ve repeatedly said that the state
of Iowa will have $600 million in
our reserve funds and $300 million
in our ending balance when the fiscal
year comes to a close on June 30.
I argued that with so much money
on hand—far more than most other
states—there is no need to deeply
cut our local schools, community
colleges and universities.
That statement was partially in
error, and I want to issue a correction.
It turns out Iowa’s economy
is recovering even better than
expected. Michael Fitzgerald, Iowa’s
State Treasurer, reported this week
that we’ll have an additional $100
million in our ending balance when
this fiscal year comes to a close on
June 30.
These additional dollars can help
protect Iowa’s local schools and
create new jobs. There are now
100 million more reasons why the
compromises needed to end the
session should be easier to find.
Senate votes to improve mental
health services for Iowans
We voted this week to make mental
health and disability services more
accessible and affordable to Iowans
in all parts of the state.
Senate File 525 creates a legislative
interim committee to propose
statutory legislation to redesign our
state’s mental health and disability
services, which are used by Iowans
with mental illness, intellectual
disabilities and developmental
disabilities. The committee will
develop legislation to establish a set
of basic services that all counties
must provide and to streamline
funding.
developmental needs met?
One thing I have noticed over
and over with Butler County 4-H
youth, the really involved 4-Hers
(the ones who go out and make those
differences in their communities)
have involved parents right behind
them. These actively involved
parents may be serving as club
leaders or just supporting their
children but they are helping these
youth build a strong foundation from
which they can grow and develop.
Our active families are offering their
young people the opportunity to
have hand-on learning experiences
take place, in which it is okay to
try, make mistakes, learn from those
mistakes and try again.
I found this “Parent’s 4-H
Pledge” on the Iowa 4-H website. It
originated in the Extension program
at Illinois University.
“I pledge my HEAD to give my
child the information I can, to
help him/her see things clearly,
and to make wise decisions.
I pledge my HEART to encourage
and support my child no
matter whether he/she has
successes or disappointments.
I pledge my HANDS to help my
child’s club; if I cannot be a
club leader, I can help in many
equally important ways.
I pledge my HEALTH to keep my
child strong and well for a
better world through 4-H for my
child’s club, our community,
our country, and our world.”
I’ve heard it said that behind
every good president is a strong
first lady. I’d like to go on record
as saying, “Behind every actively
involved 4-H’er is some active
parent involvement.” When we sign
up 4-Hers in the fall, we should be
signing up parents to help in any
way they can. We should NEVER
hesitate to ask them to help; if they
are actively involved, their kids are
more likely to be involved and stay
active.
I’ll close with this awesome quote
credited to Chief Sitting Bull but still
so very important today. “Let us put
our minds together and see what life
we can make for our children.”
So let’s do that – all work together
to improve the lives of our children!
The goal is to develop a
statewide system that is regionally
administered and locally delivered
to provide greater access to mental
health care and services for Iowans
who need them. The new system
must be in place by July 1, 2013.
Currently, mental health services
for adults are provided at the county
level, meaning Iowa has up to 99
different mental health systems.
Services generally include treatment,
vocational opportunities, support
services that help Iowans remain a
part of their community, and group
homes.
Reform is also necessary because
funding for our mental health system
is complex, comes from a variety of
sources, and is not sufficient to cover
costs.
Try Composting
Don’t know what to do with
your lawn clippings, weeds or
other plant materials? Why not
compost. Composting is one way
to reduce yard waste. Compost is
simply decomposed plant material
that, when mixed with soil, can be
used to improve soil properties. As
the weather warms and the lawns,
gardens, trees, shrubs and flowers
grow more quickly, it is time to
think about what to do with the
yard waste that will be produced
by all this plant growth. Yard waste
can be composted and turned into a
useful product that can be used in the
garden, lawn or flower beds. This
column will review composting dos
and don’ts and will hopefully help
you decide if this is something you
might want to try.
What can you put into a compost
pile? Leaves, fresh grass clippings,
weeds that have not gone to
seed, shredded paper, hedge
clippings, cornstalks, crushed
corncobs and sawdust are common
materials used. Apple cores and
banana peels placed in the compost
pile should be covered by one or
more of these materials to limit the
attraction of flies.
Fresh lawn clippings, weeds and
alfalfa have a low carbon to nitrogen
ratio. Leaves, shredded paper,
hedge clippings, cornstalks, crushed
corncobs and sawdust have a high
carbon to nitrogen ratio. Therefore
the compost pile will work best
when there is a mix of these different
materials. A ten to one carbon
textbook for life.
Encourage your children
to make reading the
newspaper a part of their
everyday routine for
lifelong learning.
Do not put meat scraps or bones
into the pile as they do not compost
easily and are likely to attract dogs,
rodents or other animals. Also, don’t
put in diseased plant materials, pet
excrement or weeds that have gone
to seed as the seed and pathogens
will most likely not be destroyed by
the composting process.
To speed up the decomposition
rate, you may want to try the
following: chop or shred the
materials to be composted; add a
high-nitrogen, complete analysis
fertilizer to the pile; incorporate
barnyard manure into the pile; and
turn the compost about once a week
during the season, adding water
each time (the composting material
should feel like a damp sponge-a
drop or two of water should drip
out when tightly squeezed). Using
all these techniques will hasten the
decomposition rate. Decomposition
rate is affected by the type of material
used, size of particles and amount of
moisture and oxygen present.
The benefit to using compost is
that it will increase the amount of
Tie the knot and cut the cake
Congratulations! You have tied the
knot and cut the cake… Now what?
Although next year’s tax day seems
far away, it will be here before you
know it.
Marriage can mean a change in
name. Ensure the names you will
enter on your first tax return match
the names and Social Security
numbers on file with the Social
Security Administration. Make the
change with SSA as soon as possible
if there is a spousal name change.
Even if you get married on Dec.
31, 2011, you are considered to have
been married for the entire year.
Check your withholding to be sure
you are having enough taxes taken
out of your paychecks. If you both
work, your combined income may
place you in a higher tax bracket
Making a change to your
withholding now can eliminate
or reduce a tax bill next year. Use
Form W-4, Employee’s Withholding
Allowance Certificate, to make the
needed adjustments and give the
form to your employer.
Make sure the IRS knows of your
correct mailing address. Either you
can notify the US Postal Service or
you can complete and mail an IRS
Form 8822, Change of Address
form, to the address listed on page 2
of the form.
Let your employer know about any
name and address changes as soon as
possible. This will ensure that you
receive your Form W-2, Wage and
Tax Statement, at the right time to
file. Also, ensure other payers, such
as banks and investment companies,
have your updated name and address
as well.
You may be wondering how being
married will affect your taxes. When
you file your return, you will be
able to choose between filing jointly
with your spouse (which may lower
your combined tax) or using the
filing status called married and filing
separately. Most couples prefer the
joint option, but depending upon
your particular financial and tax
circumstances, separate filings could
be warranted.
Joint filing typically is a good idea
if you both work and one makes
considerably more than the other.
Combining incomes could bring
the higher earnings into a lower
tax bracket. Some tax credits are
only available to a married couple
when they file a joint return. And
logistically, it’s easier to deal with
just one return.
Separate returns might be
preferable if one spouse has large
medical bills and can meet the
deduction threshold by considering
only his or her income. Other
itemized deduction thresholds
(miscellaneous deductions or
casualty losses) also could be easier
for just one partner to meet.
Keep in mind, though, that if
one spouse itemizes on his or her
separate return, the other spouse
also must itemize. That could pose
a costly problem for a spouse who
has no or few itemized expenses
and would be better off claiming the
standard deduction.
Separate filing also is recommended
when a spouse has concerns about
tax claims the other wants to make.
In most situations, when couples file
jointly, each partner accepts equal
responsibility for any tax due or
penalties that might be assessed if
problems arise with the return.
When it comes to wedding
planning, details are important. So
take these steps now to ensure your
first tax season as husband and wife
goes as smoothly.
Rejoice in His Name
Sue Hicks, Hampton, is a
Christian writer and speaker.
Even without guarantees,
we have hope, Jesus
By Sue Hicks
As I watched the news coverage
of the tornado in Joplin, survivors
reiterated one word: hope.
How does one hope when
everything is obliterated, when even
one’s children can’t be found?
What about the father who was
riding home with his just-graduated
high school senior son who wrapped
his arms around the son’s waist as
the young man was sucked through
the sunroof of their SUV? The father
survived but could not save his son
from the whirlwind.
That same son, had begun reciting
scripture verses, one after the other
as the storm hit.
It made me think of Elijah and
the whirlwind. All his companion,
Elisha, could do was drop to his
knees and proclaim: “My father, my
father, the chariots of Israel and the
horsemen of God!” (2 Kings 2:12)
Who can understand it?
Then, there were the 18 or so who
took refuge in a convenience store’s
walk-in cooler. Various cuts of the
recording have been played on the
news, but the import can only be
grasped hearing it in its entirety.
There is a horrific and violent roar
with many screams. The voice of the
young man recording the experience
on his phone can be heard saying,
“I love you. I love you, man. I love
everybody, man.”
In the midst, there is a woman
calling, “Jesus, Jesus, Jesus.” Others
are crying out, “Oh, my God.”
As the sounds of the storm subside,
there are exclamations of praise.
From the woman with the clear
voice: “Thank you, Jesus. Heavenly
Father!” And others, thanking
God. Then, people begin asking if
everyone is all right.
They were all right.
Love and God. That was all that
mattered as the tornado hit.
How easily we forget. It is always
all that ever matters.
Survivor after interviewed
survivor, talked about the importance
of hope as they stood among
structures turned to matchsticks
and cars piled atop each other like
cheerleader pyramids.
The consensus was that hope in
things being better, being other than
what they now are, being normal
once again is what kept them all
going. As one man put it, “we’d die
if we didn’t have hope.”
Hope is primordial in humans,
perhaps even a survival instinct. It
causes one to look up, to turn one’s
face to God. We hope because we
cannot do otherwise.
For the Christian, hope is more.
It is a belief in the kindness and
goodness of God. And yet, during
such times, even just hearing of such
events, we cannot help but think:
“there are no guarantees.”
We are not guaranteed a
comfortable life. Was the son,
reciting God’s word as he was
sucked into the whirlwind any less
loved, less cared for of God than
those who survived in the cooler?
Hug your loved ones tight, we say.
And we say it even when we love
Jesus, because we know the only
guarantee we do have is life with
him in heaven.
As I write this, a dear friend of
mine is gravely ill and hospitalized.
I hope for her, because her absence
in my life is something I don’t want
to think about. She has one of the
most uniquely playful personalities
of anyone I have ever known. I hold
her tightly in my heart, and pray for
healing and for hope for her and her
family.
And I’m reminded again, there are
no guarantees, but I can have hope
because love and God are all that
ever matters.
In A Community Worth Living
Jesus said, “Do this for the remembrance of me.”
A few years ago around 7:00 a.m. I stood on the west side of Highway
14 looking across the road at the Allison Cemetery. The sun was about
treetop level and covered by a thin layer of clouds giving the morning a
pleasant glow. The Avenue of Flags had just been raised for Memorial
Day and the wind was blowing hard enough to reveal the stars and stripes.
With the sun behind them the details of the flags stood out and made them
look bright in the glow of a beautiful morning sky.
It just so happened that from where I stood I could see down the center
of the driveway into the cemetery with its double row of flags one on each
side. The wind was out of the south blowing one row of flags out across
the driveway. From my viewpoint the cemetery went downhill giving a
stacked, descending, symmetrical view of the flags all blowing evenly to
the north.
As I looked upon this beautiful sight two of the older men who had
just helped raise the poles with their flags were walking up the driveway.
When they reached the highest point they stopped to talk as old friends
do. If only I had a camera to have captured the moment of two men totally
unaware of what I saw on a beautiful Saturday morning.
I thought, “This is a part of life in Allison, Iowa.” It is not the flags that
line the driveways or mark the graves but the people who live here and
remember those who once did. It is in remembering those who gave us
life, raised us and taught us, defended and protected us that give meaning
to life.
Maybe that is why Jesus said, eat this bread and drink this wine and do
it in remembrance of me. When we remember what he did we honor him
and in the honoring we make life in a community worth living in.
