Pre Conferences—September 12, 2011 CHOOSE FULL DAY OR ½ DAY SESSIONS
7:00AM – 4:00PM Registration
7:00AM – 8:00AM Continental Breakfast
8:00AM – 4:00PM Bariatric Safe Patient Handling: All‐New Living Laboratory
Be part of this all‐day bariatric event! Experience the practical application of safe handling
technologies and its science. Learn the hands‐on how, why and when of the latest equipment.
Creative learning tools such as our bariatric “suited” model, video clip competition, and more
are part of this all‐new living laboratory. Take advantage of this opportunity to follow a unit
peer leader through three simulated settings across the continuum of care, learn how to
integrate a Bariatric Toolkit into your practice, take home resources and web sources to build
your program, and create a real‐life action plan for your setting!
Susan Gallagher, Catherine Clarey‐Sanford, Harpreet Gujral
8:00 AM – 4:00 PM “Hands‐On” Practical Experience With the Newest Patient Handling Equipment
This pre‐conference provides a tutorial and opportunities to gain competencies in the newest
patient handling equipment. This program would be most helpful for direct care providers as
well as educators and peer safety leaders responsible for competency assessments of staff.
Participants will rotate to 12 unique stations, addressing:
• Technologies/techniques for bed repositioning (part 1)
• Technologies/techniques for bed repositioning (part 2)
• Diverse (and underutilized) sling options for ceiling lifts
• Tips for personal care (feeding, dressing/undressing, bathing in bed)
• Innovative applications for friction reducing devices
• Air‐assisted lateral transfer devices and creative ways to integrate these devices across
care settings
• Awareness of expanded capacity (knowing weight limits of patient handling devices and
common fixtures such as handrails and toilets)
• Patient transport technologies to minimize push/pull forces
• Technologies and techniques for ambulating patients at risk for falls
• Technologies and techniques for toileting partially dependent patients
• Technologies and techniques for toileting fully dependent patients
• Tips for managing difficult situations: confused or combative patients; patient refuses to
use a patient handling device
8:00 AM – 12:00 PM Challenges and Solutions for Safe Patient Handling in Long Term Care Settings
This program is intended to inform, educate and provide practical advice and tools that
can be used to promote safety in the long term care work environment. Our program
materials will help the nurse or health care worker to evaluate environments and assess
situations that may cause injury to themselves or other care team members in addition
to the patient or resident. This program will reflect real experiences from LTC facilities
who have implemented a SPH Program. The programs will start with understanding the
unique challenges of LTC, regulations, staffing, and safety risk and cost. The second
speaker will address facility safety assessment, culture change and competency training.
The final session will pull it all together to evaluate a successful SPH Program, reduced
injuries, increased staff and resident satisfaction and reduces cost associated with
injury. We will end with an expert panel discussion and open questions up from the
attendees.
1:00 PM – 4:00 PM Challenges and Solutions for Safe Patient Handling in Rehabilitation
Join in this hands‐on session specifically designed for rehabilitation professionals. Participants
will discover that selection of the right equipment allows the safety principles of Safe Patient
Handing and Movement to be easily integrated into active rehabilitation programs. Common
rehabilitation patient handling myths will be dispelled. Overview of patient handling equipment
designed to promote and advance mobility will be presented. Participants will have hands‐on
experience with patient handling equipment to practice clinical applications specific to
rehabilitation.
