Continued from the front page “I’m honored,” said third-year law student Cory Ricci, who made the trial team for the second consecutive year. “I’m so thrilled just to have a case to try again.” Ricci is referring to the Tournament of Champions, a trial competition that will take place this year in Chicago, IL. Governed by the National Institute of Trial Advocacy, the Tournament of Champions hosts the top 16 trial advocacy programs from law schools throughout the country, and Cumberland School of Law is one of these 16 schools. Last year, Cumberland’s trial team won not only the Tournament of Champions in New York City at St. John’s University but also the National Trial Advocacy Competition held in East Lansing, MI, at Michigan State University, and the American Association for Justice Student Trial Advocacy Competition held in Las Vegas, Nevada. “We definitely have the firepower. It’s just a matter of putting in the preparation,” Ricci stated. This year, Ricci hopes to repeat the success of last year. The judges who presided over the competition were universal in their praise of the competitors. Submissions for this E-Newsletter “The students did very well. At Cumberland, there is more of an emphasis on practical application. I think it pays off well when they get out and begin to practice,” said the Honorable Joseph L. Boohaker, who presided over one of the rounds. The following 16 Peterson competitors now make up the current Cumberland School of Law National Trial Team: Rebecca Hall, Patrick Hinchey, Melissa Isabel, Keith Knowlton, Rachel Martin, Alex McFall, Blake Milner, Jackson Neal, Benjamin Odendahl, Nick Rayburn, Jennifer Reynolds, Cory Ricci, Dain Stewart, Genevieve Turner, Chambers Waller and Carl Williams. The team will be coached by Robin Beardsley Mark, W.M. Bains Fleming III, Marc Jaskolka, Michael V. Rasmussen, the Honorable James H. Roberts Jr., and Sarah L. Williams. The competition was coordinated by Victoria Ebrahimi, director of the Peterson, and Hannah Torbert, associate director of the Peterson. Trey Bolling, Winner of the Vulcan Materials Co. Scholarship Award for Outstanding Candidate’s Paper Each summer, members of Cumberland School of Law's rising second year class are invited to participate in competitive writing programs for membership on the American Journal of Trial Advocacy and Cumberland Law Review. Afterward, the very best papers from the Trial Journal's writing program are considered by a committee of faculty members for the prestigious Vulcan Materials Co. Scholarship Award for Outstanding Candidate’s Paper. The winner of this year's award is Trey Bolling for his paper written on Denver Health & Hospital Authority v. Beverage Distributors Co. Trey earns the $1000 prize made possible by the Vulcan Materials Company, and his paper will be published in issue 36:2 of the Trial Journal. The runner-up for this year's award is Courtney Bailey. Ms. Bailey wrote her paper on United States v. Huete-Sandoval. Her paper will also be published in issue 36:2 of the Trial Journal. The Journal would like to extend a special thank you to Professors Wendy Greene, Lynn Schuck, and Belle Stoddard, who took time out of their busy beginning-of-the-year schedule to read and vote on the top papers from our Summer Writing Program.
