Shores Moot Court Competition<br />

The Henry Upson Sims Moot Court Board<br />

congratulates all participants <strong>of</strong> the Janie L.<br />

Shores Moot Court Competition which was held this<br />

past week. In particular, the board members thank<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>essor LaJuana Davis and Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Brannon<br />

Denning, as well as Dean John Carroll for judging<br />

the final round <strong>of</strong> this competition.<br />

The board members also recognize those students<br />

who advanced to the final round <strong>of</strong> competition:<br />

Ryan Proctor, Kayla Schoen, Carter Montgomery<br />

and Hutch McCollum. After an exciting round <strong>of</strong><br />

oral arguments, Kayla Schoen won Best Oral<br />

Advocate, Kayla Schoen and Ryan Proctor won<br />

Best Team, and Hutch McCollum won Best Brief.<br />

In addition, the board members thank the many<br />

students who took time out <strong>of</strong> their busy schedules to<br />

compete over the past several weeks. All <strong>of</strong> the<br />

hard work demonstrated by the students, made for<br />

a successful competition.<br />

Dean John L. Carroll<br />

During the week <strong>of</strong> March 11, Judge Carroll will be attending the annual meeting <strong>of</strong> the<br />

International Society <strong>of</strong> Barristers which is an international association dedicated to excellence<br />

and integrity in advocacy. Membership in the society is by invitation only. Judge Carroll is one<br />

<strong>of</strong> the academic fellows <strong>of</strong> the society.<br />

Dean John Carroll was featured in several segments on Birmingham’s NBC affiliate speaking<br />

to the Shelby County voting rights lawsuit argued before the U.S. Supreme Court. “If the<br />

[justices] side with Shelby County, you will still be able to sue if t<strong>here</strong> is a voting rights violation,” Carroll<br />

said.<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Wendy Greene<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Wendy Greene was featured on a segment on Birmingham’s ABC affiliate about<br />

arguments before the U.S. Supreme Court on a voting rights lawsuit out <strong>of</strong> Shelby County, Ala.<br />

“T<strong>here</strong> are some conservative justices who may make it a 5-4 vote,” Green said, “with Justice<br />

Kennedy being a swing vote.”<br />

On Friday, March 1, Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Wendy Greene presented an invited paper, “Gender Equality<br />

in the Workplace: Appearance Matters,” at Florida International <strong>University</strong>’s <strong>Law</strong> Review Symposium on<br />

“Minding the Gap: Reflection on the Achievement Gap Between Men and Women in the Workplace in<br />

2013.”<br />

On Friday, March 8th, Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Wendy Greene will be presenting at the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> California-Berkeley<br />

during a symposium devoted to the recently published anthology, “Presumed Incompetent: The Intersections<br />

<strong>of</strong> Race and Class for Women in Academia” hosted by the Berkeley Journal <strong>of</strong> Gender, <strong>Law</strong> and<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Woodrow N. Hartzog<br />

This past Thursday, Feb. 28, Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Hartzog gave a talk at the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Washington <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>Law</strong> on privacy at a symposium titled “The Disclosure Crisis.” His article, titled “Obscurity by Design,”<br />

which was co-authored with Fred Stutzman, is forthcoming in the Washington <strong>Law</strong> Review later this<br />

Project Homeless Connect 6 is<br />

March 9<br />

On Saturday, March 9, from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.,<br />

<strong>Cumberland</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Law</strong> will join attorneys and<br />

judges from the Birmingham Metro area to participate<br />

in Project Homeless Connect 6. This will be held at the<br />

Boutwell Auditorium (1930 8th Avenue North, Birmingham,<br />

AL 35203). Last year, volunteers from all pr<strong>of</strong>essions<br />

provided services to more than 800 homeless or nearhomeless<br />

clients. The issues they dealt with ranged from<br />

misdemeanor criminal charges, social security and housing<br />

crises, to health, and dental care.<br />

<strong>Law</strong> students are needed to facilitate intake for the legal<br />

services section <strong>of</strong> Project Homeless Connect 6. Volunteers<br />

will make initial contact with the client, run a basic<br />

search for outstanding warrants and court cases, and<br />

determine which attorney can best deal with the client’s<br />

issue.<br />

T<strong>here</strong> will be an orientation/training session for students<br />

that are volunteering for this year’s Project Homeless<br />

Connect this year on Thurs., March 7, from 4:30–5:30 p.m.<br />

in the Great Room.<br />

If you are interested in volunteering, please stop by suite<br />

with the time you are available. T<strong>here</strong> are two-hour shifts<br />

available throughout the day.<br />

Also, all the <strong>Cumberland</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Law</strong> volunteers are<br />

asked to wear their red volunteer T-shirt, as shown in the<br />

picture below. If you don’t have one, you can pick one up<br />

A Member <strong>of</strong> the Class <strong>of</strong> 2014 to Receive the Matthew McLain<br />

Peer Scholarship<br />

It is with great pleasure that the Class <strong>of</strong> 2013 continues the tradition <strong>of</strong> selecting a member <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Class <strong>of</strong> 2014 to receive the Matthew McLain Peer Scholarship. An application for the scholarship<br />

was emailed to the Class <strong>of</strong> 2014 by Paul Simon on Tuesday, March 5. In addition to the application,<br />

applicants must include a synopsis (one-page) <strong>of</strong> why he/she should receive the scholarship, an un<strong>of</strong>ficial<br />

transcript, and a resume.<br />

The Selection Committee is composed <strong>of</strong> the senior class <strong>of</strong>ficers and last year's Peer Scholarship<br />

recipient, Brittany Tedford. The scholarship will be awarded at Awards Day on April 9, 2013. The<br />

deadline to submit an application is Friday, March 15, at noon.<br />

The finals for the Donworth Moot Court Competition will be in the<br />

John L. Carroll Moot Courtroom and rooms 114, 118, and 120 <strong>of</strong> the<br />

law school. The Donworth is the first-year law students’ moot court<br />

competition w<strong>here</strong> students argue their <strong>Law</strong>yering and Legal Reasoning<br />

[LLR] course problems. The students will make legal arguments<br />

based on their appellate briefs written for LLR, in front <strong>of</strong> a mock<br />

appellate court. All alumni, prospective students, family and friends<br />

are welcome to attend.<br />
