Dear Customers and Users...
... we hope that you all have had a good start into the New Year 2007. We would like to take this opportunity
to thank you all for the support you have given us for our work last year and to assure you that we will also be
eager to serve your needs in 2007.
Gunnar Eriksson turns 65
On February 7, 2007, Gunnar Eriksson will celebrate his 65th birthday. We wish him all the best on this
special event and would like to express our gratitude for all the good work he has done for GTT which has
become the backbone of the company over the years.
Since he will be, as usual during this time of the year, in Montreal for that day, we would like to thank our
Canadian colleagues for organising a big birthday party for him. "Of course", he says, "this birthday is nothing
special", and there is no end to the professional activities in and around the Gibbs energy minimiser. In other
words: Dr. Solgas will be with us for many working years to come. We wish him Good Health and All the
Best!
Issue 54 GTT-News February 6, 2007
In the framework of his teaching appointment at RWTH Aachen University Klaus Hack will run two
courses in the coming months, one on March 1 - 2, 2007, and the other on April 12 - 13, 2007. A further
course will be held at the Technical University of Ilmenau, Thüringen, on March 19 and 20, 2007.
Critical Thermodynamic Evaluation of Oxide Systems Relevant to
Fuel Ashes and Slags, Part 1
In co-operation with the Institute of Energy Research 4 (IEF-2) at the Research Centre Jülich we habe published
a multi-part article on the critical thermodynamic evaluation of oxide systems relevant to fuel ashes and slags.
Here is the information on Part 1:
Critical thermodynamic evaluation of oxide systems relevant to fuel ashes and slags. Part 1: Alkali oxidesilica
systems, by E. Yazhenskikh, K. Hack, and M. Müller, CALPHAD Volume 30, Issue 3, 2006, pp. 270-
276
Abstract
The associate species model was applied to the thermodynamic representation of the liquid in oxide systems
Na2O-SiO2 and K2O-SiO2. The available phase diagram and activity data were collected and evaluated for the
purpose of improving the solution database. These new data for the liquid phase are compatible with data for
the solid stoichiometric compounds from the FACT Pure Substance database. The phase equilibria calculated
using the new optimised solution data show good agreement with the experimental points. Furthermore,
the experimental activities are well reproduced. In contrast to other databases the new dataset allows the
description of the whole composition range including the region near the pure alkali oxides.
New SGTE Case Book Edition to be Published this Summer
As editor in-chief and main author Klaus Hack has handed over the second enhanced edition of the SGTE
Case Book - Thermodynamics at Work 5 to the publisher. Woodhead is planning to bring the book on the
market later this year. We will keep you informed.
A description of the 3D Phase Diagrams Software Project
A description of the 3D phase diagrams software mentioned above that GTT, the Department of Ferrous Metallurgy
6 as well as the Virtual Reality Group 7 at RWTH Aachen University are jointly developing, is described
in the article "Space Phase - Visualisierung von Phasendiagrammen in multi-komponentigen Systemen" (in
German). The article has been published in the Jahresbericht (annual report) 2005/2006 of the Virtual Reality
Center. Both the article and the entire annual report are available for download 8 .
Issue 54 GTT-News February 6, 2007
This work shows the potential of three-dimensional diagrams, using modern computer graphics. Different
from the past perspective diagrams can now be generated from quantitative calculations of phase equilibria
for systems with arbitrary components. These diagrams can even be quantitatively readable. Furthermore new
visualisation techniques from the field of virtual reality (VR) are used to increase the comprehension of the
complicated data.
GTT’s Longer Term Projects
GTT has been granted project financing on two longer term projects, one on the modelling of microstructures
of Al-based alloys during heat treatment, and the other on the thermochemistry of substrate-YBaCu-high
temperature superconductors interactions.
GTT is also involved in a project to link the WinCast code for simulation of casting processes with our thermochemistry
library ChemApp 9 . This project is carried out in collaboration with the producers of WinCast,
RWP GmbH 10 , and the University of Mondragon 11 , Spain.
Visitors
We would like to thank our recent visitor Masanori Suzuki from Osaka University and Professor Toshihiro
Tanaka for the good work which we were able to do on data assessment for alloys under high pressure. We
hope to be able to continue the fruitful co-operation in this field.
