A First Life Residency Project in Landscape

The project, ‘A First Life Residency Project in Landscape’, is a residency project that will bring together
contemporary visual artists from Australia and China to collectively experience the landscapes and cultures
of northern Australia and regional China. As the title suggests, the project is designed to be an intensive
‘real life’ cultural and creative exchange. With the artists acting as cultural anthropologists, they will explore
landscapes as being physical repositories of human attitudes, customs and beliefs. The artists will be asked
to consider how people’s practices, beliefs and concepts have been informed and determined through living
within particular landscapes. The Australian and Chinese artists will travel by road through the landscapes
of northern Australia visiting remote regions and communities in Arnhem Land and the Kimberley. They
will then undertake a road trip through south western provinces of China, from Lanzhou to Lhasa. The final
stage will see the artists undergo an intensive studio session in Beijing to produce new works in response
to their adventures for an exhibition to be held in Beijing during 2011 as part of the ‘Year of Australian Culture
in China’.
The 24HR Art Director, Steve Eland, has selected the following artists to participate, Sam Leach, Tony Lloyd,
Ben Armstrong, Cang Xin, Shi Jinsong and Wu Daxin.

artists whose works are far more ambitious than I am accustomed to seeing in Australia and the constant dialogue with all involved
in this project is making me rethink my preconceptions of what art I can make”.

the landscape as I am consumed by parasites, scratched by scrub and abraded by rock. Mentally my assumptions about the world
I live in have been overturned. I am forced to rethink my country, my culture and my identity. This is a life changing trip for me. The
fact that I can share this experience with artists from China, with the prospect of joining them to work on a show in Beijing is deeply
significant and is something that I feel will contribute something to our understanding of both Australian and Chinese culture”.

“We are three artists from china, we are the most active contemporary artists in China and this the first time we have travelled
through the Australian landscape. It is especially important that Steve has taken us to Aboriginal areas, we were able to take a
look at the rock art. We were touched by these kinds of art. It is a good experience for us and especially because there are three
Australian artist that travel with us. We have good conversations during the travelling. This is the first time Chinese artists have
such an opportunity to work together and show our art together with the Australian artists”.

much dialogue has formed about its use and miss-use, its custodians, pre-history and recent history. It has been of personal

experiences into art, which I see as the core of my activities. This is an experience that is invaluable to share with all the artists
involved in the project”.

Bio & CV
Benjamin Armstrong
Benjamin Armstrong (born 1975) in Melbourne where
he currently lives and works. Armstrong graduated in
1996 from the Victorian College of the Arts. He works
through a variety of mediums. Drawing forms the
nucleus of his practice with printmaking and sculpture
circling around it. Recent solo exhibitions include: The
shape of things to come (Tolarno Galleries, Melbourne,
2008); Benjamin Armstrong (Project space and spare
room, RMIT, Melbourne, 2006); Gathering (Project
space, RMIT, Melbourne, 2005); Drawings (TCB Art Inc,
Melbourne, 2002). He has also participated in various
group exhibitions including A room inside (Ian Potter
Museum of Art, Melbourne University, Melbourne, 2007);
Before the body- Matter (Monash University Museum
of Art, Melbourne, 2006-07); Primavera (Museum of
Contemporary Art, Sydney, 2006); Benjamin Armstrong
and Katherine Huang (Project space, RMIT, Melbourne,
2003) His work is in the collection of the British Museum,
Prints and Drawing Department and the Monash
University Museum of Art. He is represented by Tolarno
Galleries, Melbourne.
Sam Leach
Sam Leach (born 1973) in Adelaide, South Australia,
currently resides in Melbourne. He completed a Diploma
of Art, Bachelor of Fine Art and a Master of Fine Art at
RMIT in Melbourne, Victoria. Leach worked for many
years in the Australian Tax Office but in 2006 he won
a major art prize, the Metro Five. Since then he has
consistently won many prizes and has been acquired
by a number of public galleries in Australia and private
collections across the world. Notably, he has been a
finalist for the highly prestigious Archibald Prize in 2007,
2008 and 2009. In 2010 his portrait of musical comedian
Tim Minchin won the Archibald Prize. In the same year,
he won the Wynne Prize for his landscape Proposal for
landscaped cosmos. In doing so he became one of three
artists, after William Dobell and Brett Whiteley, to win the
Archibald portrait prize and the Wynne landscape prize in
the same year.
Tony Lloyd
Tony Lloyd has shown widely in Australia and Europe. He
has undertaken artist residencies at The British School,
Rome and Canvas International Art, Netherlands.
In 2009 Gippsland Art Gallery presented Lost Highways
a survey of his work from the previous decade. In 2010
Tony Lloyd will show in London and Melbourne.
His paintings are held in public and private collections in
Australia, Japan, Europe and U.S.A.
Tony Lloyd is also an arts writer and makes regular
contributions to Artinfo.com.au.
Benjamin Armstrong
Benjamin Armstrong出生于1975年墨尔本。他现在还在

Sam Leach

Daxin Wu
Daxin Wu graduated from Foreign language Department
of Huaqiao University in 1992. In the same year he
studied in Japan with Yamaguchi, a professor specializing
in Japanese art history. In 2001, Wu moved to United
States and studied video art technology in the City
University in New York. He graduated in 2007.
