8.7.3. Duties The duties of the Graduate Advisor shall include: i. reviewing applications for admission to the M.S. and Ph.D. degree programs; ii. recommending graduate students for assistantships; iii. periodically reviewing the progress of graduate students; and iv. recruiting graduate students. 8.7.4. Review The Graduate Advisor shall be reviewed annually by the Head in consultation with the Advisory Committee and the Graduate Studies and Research Committee. ARTICLE 9—AD HOC COMMITTEES Ad hoc committees may be created by the Administration or by action of the Members. The motion to create an ad hoc committee shall include a statement of its function and a method for selection of its chair and its members, including staff and/or students as appropriate. An ad hoc committee shall be automatically dissolved when its final report is accepted by the Faculty. ARTICLE 10—AMENDMENTS These bylaws may be amended if approved by two thirds of the valid votes cast. Copies of the proposed amendment or amendments shall have been circulated to all members of the Faculty at least two weeks in advance of the vote. ARTICLE 11—GRIEVANCE PROCEDURES 11.1. Faculty Members 11.1.1. Any faculty member with a grievance shall first approach the Head for resolution. 11.1.2. If the difficulty continues, the faculty member may present the grievance to the Advisory Committee for resolution. 11.1.3. Grievances still unresolved shall follow the University of Arizona Procedure for Grievances and Hearings for Appointed Personnel found in the University Handbook for Appointed Personnel, Chapter 6. 11.2 Undergraduate Students 11.2.1. Any student with a grievance shall first approach the Head for a resolution. 11.2.2. 11.3 Graduate Students Each graduate student shall have the right to a hearing and adjudication of any case or grievance directly affecting the student in the areas of academic rights and responsibilities, professional rights and responsibilities, and University regulations. The procedure shall be as follows: 11.3.1. The parties to the grievance shall meet informally with the Department Head to seek a resolution. 11.3.2. If the situation cannot be resolved informally, an ad hoc Department Judiciary Committee shall be formed that is composed of the Department Head serving as Chairperson of the Committee and two Members and two graduate students selected by their respective groups. This Committee shall hear and adjudicate the case. 11.3.3. If the situation cannot be resolved by the Departmental Committee, the student shall follow the University of Arizona Graduate College Graduate Student Grievance Procedure. ARTICLE 12—STANDING RULES 12.1. Election Results Department election results are to be distributed to all department faculty members. 12.2. Nomination for Committee Service Following a memorandum requesting nominations, sent by the Head to the faculty, the faculty members are to make written nominations to the Head.
