<strong>Conservation</strong> <strong>Plan</strong> for <strong>Addington</strong> <strong>Cemetery</strong><br />
Many of the graves in the <strong>Addington</strong> cemetery simply record the social history of<br />
the lives of ‘ordinary’ people in the area.<br />
Headstone of Alfred Muddle<br />
Alfred Muddle died in March 1883 aged 39. He was an employee of New Zealand<br />
railways and this headstone was erected as a mark of esteem by his fellow<br />
employees at NZR. <strong>Addington</strong> had grown as a suburb due to the building of the<br />
southern rail line from 1865. The NZR provided the main employment for more<br />
than a century in <strong>Addington</strong> where the main railway workshops were situated.<br />
The above two headstones record the sobering fact of one of the more harsh realities<br />
