one <strong>of</strong> the original proprietors <strong>of</strong> the<br />
town, and a leading figure in it- early<br />
life. His descendants have ranked among<br />
the foremost families in <strong>Connecticut</strong> for<br />
two hundred and fifty years, and have<br />
never relinquished the prestige <strong>of</strong> early<br />
generations.<br />
The pedigree <strong>of</strong> the English house <strong>of</strong><br />
which the American Booths are an <strong>of</strong>f-<br />
shoot, is herewith appended:<br />
(I) William de Boothe, son <strong>of</strong> Adam<br />
de Boothe, Of Lancaster county, in 1275,<br />
married Sybil, daughter <strong>of</strong> Ralph de l'.rer-<br />
eton, <strong>of</strong> the county palatine <strong>of</strong> Chester,<br />
descendant <strong>of</strong> an ancient English family.<br />
(II) Thomas de Booth, son <strong>of</strong> William<br />
de Boothe, and his heir, married and had<br />
Robert, mentioned below.<br />
(III) Robert Booth, son <strong>of</strong> Thomas de<br />
Booth, married into the Barton family <strong>of</strong><br />
Lancashire, but evidence is not clear<br />
whether his wife was Agnes, daughter<br />
and heir <strong>of</strong> Sir William de Barton, or her<br />
daughter and heir Loretta.<br />
(IV) Thomas (2) Booth, Knight<br />
(styled Thomasin <strong>of</strong> the Booths), son <strong>of</strong><br />
Robert Booth, was living at the time <strong>of</strong><br />
Edward III., 1327-jj. His seal (as ap-<br />
peared in an ancient document in posses-<br />
sion <strong>of</strong> Lord Delamere in 1680) was, in<br />
1372, "a chevron engrailed in a canton, a<br />
mullet, and for crest a fox and a St. Cath-<br />
erine wheel," with the motto "Sigillum<br />
Tho»ur.'' He married Ellen, daughter <strong>of</strong><br />
Thomas De Workesley, near Booths, in<br />
Lancashire.<br />
(V) John Booth, son <strong>of</strong> Sir Thomas<br />
(2) Booth, and his heir, was living in the<br />
time <strong>of</strong> Richard II. and Henry IV. (1377-<br />
141 3). He is styled John <strong>of</strong> Barton. He<br />
married (first) Joan, daughter <strong>of</strong> Sir<br />
Henry Trafford, <strong>of</strong> Trafford, in Lancashire,<br />
Knight, member <strong>of</strong> an ancient Eng-<br />
lish family seated in Lancashire before<br />
the Conquest. After her death, he mar-<br />

ried Maude, daughter <strong>of</strong> Sir Clifton Sav-<br />
age, <strong>of</strong> t Ufton, in Cheshire, Knight.<br />

Robert (2) Booth, -on <strong>of</strong> John<br />
I '.."'th and hi- wife Joan, was the first <strong>of</strong><br />
the Booths who settled at Dunham Mas-<br />
sey, in * Cheshire. I fe died September, 1450,<br />
and i- buried in the parish church <strong>of</strong> Wil-<br />
merton, in Cheshire. He married Dulcis,<br />
daughter and heir <strong>of</strong> Sir William Ven-<br />
ablcs, <strong>of</strong> Bollen, Knight. She died Sep-<br />
tember, 1453. Sir Robert I'.oothand Wil-<br />
liam, his -on, had a grant <strong>of</strong> the shrievalty<br />
<strong>of</strong> Cheshire for both their live-.<br />
(VII) Sir William (2) Booth, son and<br />
heir <strong>of</strong> Sir Robert (2) Booth, <strong>of</strong> Dunham<br />
Massey, Knight, married Maude, daugh-<br />
ter <strong>of</strong> J. Dutton, Esq., <strong>of</strong> Dutton in<br />
Che-hire, who survived him and married<br />
again. Sir William Booth received <strong>of</strong><br />
Henry VI. an annuity for services to the<br />
Crown.<br />
(VIII) Sir George Booth, or Bothe,<br />
son <strong>of</strong> Sir William (2) Booth, married<br />
Catherine, daughter and heir <strong>of</strong> R. Mountfort,<br />
<strong>of</strong> Bescote, in County Stafford. The<br />
Mountforts were <strong>of</strong> noble connection,<br />
bearing relationship to David. King <strong>of</strong><br />
Scotland, and to the great family <strong>of</strong> Clin-<br />
ton. This marriage brought to Sir<br />
George Booth an "ample estate <strong>of</strong> manors<br />
and lands in the counties <strong>of</strong> Salop. Staf-<br />
ford, Warwick, Leicester, Hereford,<br />
Wilts, Somerset, Devon and Cornwall."<br />
He died in 1483.<br />
(IX) Sir William (3) Booth, son <strong>of</strong> Sir<br />
George Booth, <strong>of</strong> Dunham Massey. mar-<br />
ried (first) Margaret, daughter and co-<br />
heir <strong>of</strong> Thomas Ashton, <strong>of</strong> Lancashire<br />
"by whom a large inheritance in Lanca-<br />
shire and Cheshire came to the family <strong>of</strong><br />
Bothe;" she died before 1504. He then<br />
married Ellen, daughter and co-heir <strong>of</strong><br />
Sir John Montgomery, <strong>of</strong> Kewby, in<br />
Staffordshire. Sir William Booth possessed<br />
various manors in Cheshire, York
