Wilcox,<br />
son <strong>of</strong> Deacon William (3) and Thanks<br />
(Adams) Wilcox, was horn April 1, 1728,<br />
in Simslmry, <strong>Connecticut</strong>, and settled<br />
about 1750 in West Simslmry, where he<br />
died in 1775. He was among the minute<br />
men who marched from Simslmry on the<br />
Lexington Alarm, April 19, 1775. He<br />
married Lucy Case, horn Octoher 17,<br />
1732, died in 1805, daughter <strong>of</strong> John (3)<br />
and Abigail (Humphrey) Case, granddaughter<br />
<strong>of</strong> John (2) Case, and greatgranddaughter<br />
<strong>of</strong> John (1 ) Case, founder<br />
<strong>of</strong> the family.<br />
(VI) Daniel Wilcox, son <strong>of</strong> Lieuten-<br />
ant William (4) and Lucy (Case) Wilcox,<br />
was born in West Simslmry. March<br />
25, 1772, and died in 1833, in Weatogue,<br />
where he spent his latter years. He mar-<br />
ried Esther Merritt, who was born on<br />
March S, 1771, died November 10, i860,<br />
at Weatogue. She was a daughter <strong>of</strong><br />
James and Hannah (Phelps) Merritt. the<br />
latter a daughter <strong>of</strong> Thomas and Mar-<br />
garet (Watson) Phelps, <strong>of</strong> the ancient<br />
Windsor family <strong>of</strong> that name. Daniel and<br />
Esther (Merritt) Wilcox were the par-<br />
ents <strong>of</strong> ten sons and one daughter.<br />
(VII) Averit Wilcox, son <strong>of</strong> Daniel<br />
and Esther (Merritt) Wilcox, was born<br />
January 25, 1793, and was a prosperous<br />
farmer <strong>of</strong> Simsbury, where he died Janu-<br />
ary 23, 1866. He married, August 21,<br />
[821, Sally Tuller, who was born Febru-<br />
ary 10, 1799, in Simsbury. daughter <strong>of</strong><br />
Elisha and Elizabeth (Case) Tuller.<br />

Arms—Sable a fess argent between three leop-<br />
ards passant it, spotted sahlc. The fess is<br />
charged with three escallops gules. Supporters<br />
I»e\ter a leopard gules, spotted "r, ducally col-<br />
lared or. Sinister, a stag, attired gules.<br />
Crest—A stag's head and neck, azure, attired<br />
gules, on a wreath, over a ducal coronet.<br />

The family <strong>of</strong> Hill have been well<br />
known and prominent in England since<br />
the middle <strong>of</strong> the fourteenth century, and<br />
especially eminent for their antiquity and<br />
worth, in the counties <strong>of</strong> Stafford, Devon,<br />
Somerset, and Salop. Since the time <strong>of</strong><br />
Queen Elizabeth it has been <strong>of</strong> great note<br />
and esteem in the counties <strong>of</strong> Down and<br />
\ntrim, in Ireland. The family has pro-<br />
duced in every generation soldiers, statesmen<br />
and diplomats <strong>of</strong> note, and has had<br />
its chief seats in the county <strong>of</strong> Down,<br />
Hillsborough; North Alton, in Oxford-<br />
shire; and Twickenham, in the County <strong>of</strong><br />
Middlesex.<br />

ranks among the foremost <strong>of</strong> our great<br />
Republic, holding a place <strong>of</strong> prominence<br />

two hundred and eighty years, through a<br />
