(VI) Edward Chase, son <strong>of</strong> David and<br />

Susanna (Pierce) Chase, was born in<br />

Swansea, Massachusetts, May 31, 1757.<br />

and was married, according to the Swan-<br />

sea Friends' Record, November jo. 1777<br />

(by the Rehoboth Vita] Records, August<br />

25, 177S1 to Chloe Bullock, <strong>of</strong> Rehoboth,<br />

who was born July 5. [753, and died September<br />

,;. [848. Their children, all bom<br />

in Killingly, were: David, mentioned lie-<br />

low; Daniel, born October 8, 17S1 ;<br />

Edward, born February -'(>. 17S4; Sampson,<br />

born January 24, 1780 ; 'Thomas, born<br />

July 19. 1789; Israel, born June 15, 1794.<br />

Edward Chase died in Killingly, in April,<br />

[842, and is buried in the old Chase fam-<br />

ily burying ground near the home <strong>of</strong> John<br />

Chase, <strong>of</strong> East Killingly. His gravestone<br />

calls him "Deacon Edward Chase," the<br />

name by which he was commonly known.<br />

(VII) David (2) Chase, Judge, eldest<br />

son <strong>of</strong> Edward and Chloe (Bullock)<br />

Chase, was born in Killingly, Connecti-<br />

cut. November 5, 1779, and died in Kill-<br />

ingly. January 31, [866, after a long life<br />

<strong>of</strong> distinguished service to his town and<br />

State. He was trained as a surveyor and<br />

afterward became a lawyer, lie held<br />

many public <strong>of</strong>fices and represented Kill-<br />

ingly in the State Legislature several<br />

times. As a lawyer <strong>of</strong> judicial mind, clear<br />

judgment, and firm and upright principles,<br />

he was repeatedly appointed by Gov-<br />

ernors <strong>of</strong> <strong>Connecticut</strong> one <strong>of</strong> the judges <strong>of</strong><br />

the Windham County Court which cor-<br />

responded to our present Sta1 rior<br />

Court <strong>of</strong> general jurisdiction. It was<br />

largely through Judge Chase's efforts that<br />

the town <strong>of</strong> Killingly was made a separate<br />

probate district ; and as a recognition <strong>of</strong><br />

these services he was chosen as Kill-<br />

ingly's first probate judge and held the<br />

<strong>of</strong>fice for two terms. In his younger days<br />

Judge Chase was active in military cir-<br />

cles, sen ing as lieutenant, and afterward,<br />

during the trying Embargo Period pre-<br />

ceding the War <strong>of</strong> [812, as captain <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Fourth I ompany <strong>of</strong> the Eleventh Regiment.<br />

Judge Chase married, August 29,<br />

[803, Alma, known as Amy, daughter <strong>of</strong><br />

rraveS, Of Killingly. who fought<br />

in the Revolutionar) War. She was born<br />

August 15, 1782, and died in February,<br />

[869. Their children were: i. Koxana,<br />

born July 29, [804, who married Uriah<br />

Coman. and resided at Painesville, Ohio.<br />

2. chloe, born August 1, 1805, who mar-<br />

ried 'Turner Miller, and resided at 01n<<br />

ville. Rhode Island. 3. Alvia, born Octo-<br />

ber [9, 1807, resided in Killingly, a sur-<br />

veyor. 4. Giles, mentioned below. 5.<br />
