ber 27, [810, in Abington, where he died<br />

BULKELEY, William Eliphalet Adams,<br />

Insurance Auditor.<br />

The senior son <strong>of</strong> the late William H.<br />

Bulkeley, and his successor in various po-<br />

sitions <strong>of</strong> trust and responsibility, Mr.<br />

Bulkeley fills a useful place in the insur-<br />

ance business <strong>of</strong> Hartford, and enjoys the<br />

esteem <strong>of</strong> his contemporaries. His busi-<br />

ness qualities are inherited from a long<br />

line <strong>of</strong> efficient American ancestors, and<br />

he enjoyed the advantage <strong>of</strong> being reared<br />

in a New England home where the pre-<br />

cepts and example inspired to worthy en-<br />

dea\<br />

Born February 19, 1868, in Hartford,<br />

his education was supplied by the best resources<br />

ci his native city. In 1890 he was<br />

graduated from Trinity College with the<br />

degree (>i Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Science, and on<br />

the first <strong>of</strong> October <strong>of</strong> that year he became<br />

associated with the Aetna Life Insurance<br />

Company, in its Bond and Mortgage De-<br />

partment, handling western farm loans,<br />

where he continued five years. Subse-<br />

quently he became assistant cashier <strong>of</strong> the<br />

company, later cashier, and at the annual<br />

meeting following the death <strong>of</strong> his father<br />

in 1902, succeeded the latter as a director<br />

and as auditor <strong>of</strong> the company. When<br />

subsidiary organizations <strong>of</strong> the company<br />

were formed, namely the Aetn I<br />

and Surety Company and the Wtna Au-<br />

tomobile Insurance Company, Colonel<br />

director or trustee at the same time on<br />

the boards <strong>of</strong> competing banking institu-<br />

Hartford Aetna National Bank. lie suc-<br />

ceeded his father in the board <strong>of</strong> directors<br />

<strong>of</strong> the United States Bank and Amer-<br />

ican National Bank. Soon after the lat-<br />

ter was absorbed by the Phoenix National<br />

Bank, he resigned from the directorate<br />

and became a director <strong>of</strong> the Hartford<br />

(now Hartford Aetna) National Bank.<br />

He is a trustee <strong>of</strong> the Mechanics' Sav-<br />

ings Bank <strong>of</strong> Hartford and a director <strong>of</strong><br />

the Kellogg & Bulkeley Company, a large<br />

lithographing concern <strong>of</strong> Hartford.<br />

Colonel Bulkeley has always filled a<br />

prominent place in social life and affairs.<br />

He is a member <strong>of</strong> the Epsilon Chapter <strong>of</strong><br />

the Delta Psi fraternity, a Fellow <strong>of</strong> Trin-<br />

ity College, a member <strong>of</strong> the Hartford<br />

Golf Club, and has served two terms<br />

as president <strong>of</strong> the Hartford Club. Affil-<br />

iated with the great Masonic fraternity,<br />

he is a member <strong>of</strong> St. John's Lodge, An-<br />

cient Free and Accepted Masons, <strong>of</strong><br />

Hartford. In 1890 he was appointed an<br />

aide-de-camp, With rank <strong>of</strong> colonel, on<br />

the staff <strong>of</strong> Governor Morgan G. Bulkeley.<br />

and for eleven years was a member<br />

<strong>of</strong> the first company, Governor's Foot<br />

Guard, as staff <strong>of</strong>ficer and adjutant <strong>of</strong> the<br />

command. In 1891 he served as a mem-<br />

ber <strong>of</strong> the common council <strong>of</strong> the city,<br />
