The research program is embedded in the Dutch-Flemish postgraduate
school for research and education Experimental Psychopathology (EPP),
which is recognized by the Royal Dutch Academy of Arts and Sciences.
5. Research topics
The mission of our research group is the development of theoretical models
to understand the etiology and maintenance of psychiatric disorders and to
develop theory-based personality assessments and interventions. The main
subjects of research in the program are:

(1) Experimental Clinical Psychology
This programme is aimed to explain psychopathology and includes 1)
disorder-specific and 2) transdiagnostic psychological and neurobiological
processes that cut across different disorders.
Our research focuses on cognitive-behavioural and neurobiological
processes that are supposed to contribute to the development and
maintenance of emotional disorders (i.e., anxiety disorders, depression).
Processes like appraisal, information processing biases, rumination,
(meta)memory, avoidance, stress reactivity, inhibition of the fear-potentiated
startle response and emotion regulation are addressed. Also, the effect of
match/mismatch between person characteristics and appraisal of the stressor
in relation to symptom perception is examined. New lines of research will be
initiated on emotion regulation and fear generalization and the development
of anxiety disorders, which are supported by two VENI grants from NWO
awarded to Anda van Stegeren and Bram Vervliet.
Secondly, at the root of psychiatric disorders lies emotional memory. This
line of research focuses on psychological and neurobiological processes that
are involved in the consolidation and reconsolidation of emotional memory.
The effect of stress hormones (i.e., noradrenaline and cortisol) on emotional
memory is studied and neuroimaging studies (fMRI) are performed to
elucidate the associated brain activity.
Furthermore, a main topic of this research programme is to delineate the
psychological and neurobiological mechanisms of behaviour change in
emotional disorders. This line of research is now supported by a NWO VICI
grant awarded to Merel Kindt. The aim of this programme is to bridge basic
science to clinical practice. Although we will initially test our hypotheses in
a fear-conditioning paradigm as a model for anxiety, it may also be applied
to other emotional disorders. It starts with fundamental research and may
end by implementation of laboratory findings in randomized controlled
trials.
(2) Clinical Developmental Psychopathology
This line of research focuses on children with both internalizing and
externalizing disorders. First, our research aims at testing cognitive
explanations of anxiety disorders in children. In experimental studies,
paradigms of automatic and controlled information processing are combined.
This line of research is conducted in close relation with controlled treatmentoutcome
research, examining cognitive mechanisms of behaviour change in
anxiety-disordered children. Second, with regard to externalising disorders,

our research is directed at children with Attention Deficit-Hyperactivity
disorder (ADHD) and focuses on the development of theory-driven parent
and child interventions that will impact on the primary symptoms of ADHD.
For example, the therapeutic use of computer games is being investigated as
a potentially effective new treatment for childhood ADHD. Further, and
closely related to this treatment-outcome research, longitudinal research has
been started on the aetiology and development of ADHD-symptoms in
young children. Third, using a stepped care design, research has been started
on effective preventive treatment for young children with aggressive
behaviour problems. Predictors and mechanisms of change are key issues in
this research.
(3) Applied Clinical Psychology
This line of research encompasses (a) the evaluation of cognitivebehavioural
interventions in adult disorders, and (b) the interface of
personality (assessment) and psychopathology. With regard to the first
research theme, intervention studies are conducted on obsessive-compulsive
disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, and addictions and marital violence.
Moreover, there is continued interest in exploring the value of technological
developments such as the Internet and Virtual Reality technology for the
treatment of patients with anxiety disorders. A recent addition is the research
on Mindfulness, both as a window to emotional processing, and as a specific
clinical intervention for (for example) generalized anxiety disorder. As well,
an ongoing study compares the effectiveness of another third generation
CBT Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) with the effectivenesss of
the first generation (Behavioral Activation) and the second generation
(Cognitive Therapy).
Regarding the interface of personality and psychopathology, ongoing
research aims to contribute to (a) the incremental validity and clinical utility
of clinical personality assessment and (b) evidence-based treatment
selection, both as applied to personality disorders. Additional work focuses
on innovation of clinical assessment instruments for personality and
psychopathology, including validation research on the Restructured
Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-revised (MMPI-2).
Another new development concerns research on the relations between
culturally shaped illness beliefs and treatment-outcome. Utilizing a
comprehensive approach, we examine (1) the influence of personal and
situational factors on the presentation of these beliefs, (2) therapy-related
belief change among patients, and (3) the effect of therapist-patient belief
similarity on treatment outcome.
