Renowned sculptor Richard Serra urged 185 graduating NSCAD students to find
their own artistic voices and question conventions while drawing from the strong
foundation of their art education. Considered by many to be the most important
sculptor of the postwar period, Mr. Serra received an honorary doctorate and
offered an inspiring convocation address at our 2004 Graduation Ceremony
on April 25.
“We all have a subject and it’s up to each of us to find the method to pursue it,”
said Mr. Serra, who splits his time between homes and studios in New York
and Cape Breton. “We are all more than we think we are and today as you
graduate, this is the most optimistic sendoff I can think of.”
One of Mr. Serra’s current projects is a sculpture for the new Toronto airport,
scheduled to open in 2006. His work can be found in the collections of almost every
major art museum in the world, including the Guggenheim in Bilbao, Spain, the
Museum of Modern Art in New York City and London’s Tate Modern. His set of five
WM prints, which relates to his 1992 Weight and Measure exhibition at the Tate, was
graciously donated to NSCAD’s permanent collection by the artist.
