A book-sign<strong>in</strong>g for Ms. Scottol<strong>in</strong>e is<br />

planned from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the<br />

<strong>University</strong> Book Store, Hyland Hall. The<br />

book-sign<strong>in</strong>g is free of charge and open to<br />

the public. Copies of Ms. Scottol<strong>in</strong>e’s<br />

recent novels will be available for sale.<br />

The “Meet the Author” reception,<br />

which will beg<strong>in</strong> at 5 p.m. <strong>in</strong> Eagen<br />

Auditorium of the Gunster Memorial<br />

Student Center, will be followed by the<br />

presentation of the Dist<strong>in</strong>guished Author<br />

Award. Tickets required to attend this<br />

event may be purchased by contact<strong>in</strong>g<br />

per person ($45 for Friends of the Library<br />

members) $25 of which is tax deductible.<br />

Student tickets are $25 ($20 for Friends<br />

student members). The reception will<br />

<strong>in</strong>clude cocktails, light fare and desserts.<br />

Summer at Scranton<br />

Among the 32 conferences held dur<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

summer was the <strong>in</strong>augural class of the<br />

Pennsylvania Victim Assistance Academy.<br />

The <strong>University</strong> of Scranton doesn’t<br />

shut down dur<strong>in</strong>g the summer months.<br />

The summer of 2001 is a case <strong>in</strong> po<strong>in</strong>t.<br />

Conferences, youth programs and<br />

personal-enrichment classes, as well as<br />

for-credit courses offered at both the<br />

undergraduate and graduate level, were<br />

held throughout the summer.<br />

In the area of undergraduate studies,<br />

about 900 students from 19 universities<br />

took courses at the <strong>University</strong> dur<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

summer session. Computer tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g and<br />

computer certificate programs were popular<br />

areas of study for students enrolled<br />

through the <strong>University</strong>’s Center for<br />

Cont<strong>in</strong>u<strong>in</strong>g Education.<br />

Students <strong>in</strong> 6th through 12th grades<br />

were commonly seen on campus dur<strong>in</strong>g<br />

the summer, as they participated <strong>in</strong> artsbased<br />

enrichment programs offered by the<br />

<strong>University</strong>. Programs <strong>in</strong>cluded “Creative<br />

Me” for 4th, 5th and 6th grade students;<br />

Spr<strong>in</strong>kler Systems Installed<br />

<strong>in</strong> N<strong>in</strong>e Residence Halls<br />

Summer is a time for spr<strong>in</strong>klers, no<br />

question about it. This summer, it was a<br />

time for <strong>in</strong>door spr<strong>in</strong>klers at the Un i ve r s i t y.<br />

Full fire-spr<strong>in</strong>kler systems were<br />

<strong>in</strong>stalled <strong>in</strong> Red<strong>in</strong>gton, Gavigan,<br />

McCormick, Gannon and Lavis halls dur<strong>in</strong>g<br />

the summer. Full fire-spr<strong>in</strong>kler systems<br />

were also <strong>in</strong>stalled <strong>in</strong> McGowan, Blair,<br />

Gonzaga and Luzerne houses.<br />

This was the first set of <strong>in</strong>stallations<br />

completed as part of a multi-million dollar<br />

program to <strong>in</strong>stall spr<strong>in</strong>klers <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>University</strong> hous<strong>in</strong>g. The five-year plan has<br />

been accelerated to three years. The next<br />

set of build<strong>in</strong>gs slated for spr<strong>in</strong>kler <strong>in</strong>stallation<br />

<strong>in</strong>cludes Nevils and Driscoll halls.<br />

Spr<strong>in</strong>klers will be <strong>in</strong>stalled <strong>in</strong> the<br />

<strong>University</strong>’s off-campus hous<strong>in</strong>g thereafter.<br />

Among the 32 confere n c e s<br />

class of the Pe n n s y l vania Victim Assistance<br />

Ac a d e m y. Mo re than 40 victim advo c a t e s<br />

f rom 24 counties gathered at the Un i ve r s i t y<br />

for a six-day, unive r s i t y - l e vel course of study<br />

to broaden their understand<strong>in</strong>g of victimization,<br />

victimology and victims’ rights.<br />

The Academy is a partnership between<br />

the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime<br />

and Del<strong>in</strong>quency (PCCD) and The<br />

<strong>University</strong> of Scranton. Pennsylvania is<br />

one of five states chosen by the U.S.<br />

Department of Justice to develop an<br />

Academy, modeled after the National<br />

Victim Assistance Academy.<br />

Other conferences held at the<br />

<strong>University</strong> dur<strong>in</strong>g the summer <strong>in</strong>cluded<br />

the Diocese of Scranton Youth Rally, the<br />

Catholic Charismatic Conference, the<br />

summer academy for Diocese of Scranton<br />

adm<strong>in</strong>istrators and the National Railroad<br />

Historical Society Conference.<br />

at 7:30 p.m. <strong>in</strong> the Ho u l i h a n -<br />

McLean Center, located on<br />

the corner of Mu l b e r ry St re e t<br />

and Jefferson Avenue. At 6:30<br />

p.m., Loren Schoenberg,<br />

re n owned jazz artist and jazz<br />

historian, will conduct a pre -<br />

c o n c e rt “Music Ta l k . ”<br />

Mr. Schoenberg has<br />

played and spoken at The<br />

White House with President<br />

and Mrs. Cl<strong>in</strong>ton. He has<br />

also performed with Wynton<br />

Marsalis, Marian<br />

McPartland, Dr. Billy Taylor,<br />

and Dr. David Barker <strong>in</strong> an event <strong>in</strong>ternationally<br />

televised by VH-1. He has produced<br />

shows at Carnegie Hall, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g<br />

tributes to Benny Goodman and Charlie<br />

Parker. He is a member of the faculties of<br />

the Manhattan School of Music, The New<br />

School and the Juilliard Institute for Jazz<br />

Studies. He also serves on the faculty for<br />

the Jazz at L<strong>in</strong>coln Center Essentially<br />

Ell<strong>in</strong>gton Band Director’s Academy.<br />

In addition to perform<strong>in</strong>g and lectur<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

Mr. Schoenberg has been active on<br />

radio as a host, writer, producer and critic.<br />

Born <strong>in</strong> New Jersey<br />

In 1993, Mr. Schoenberg served as the<br />

Ell<strong>in</strong>gton Conference. He has conducted<br />

The American Jazz Orchestra, The L<strong>in</strong>coln<br />

Center Jazz Orchestra, and The Sm i t h s o n i a n<br />

Jazz Ma s t e rw o rks Orchestra. His own band<br />

has released a number of albums and performed<br />

throughout the world <strong>in</strong> many of<br />

the most respected jazz venues.<br />

Sh e rwood announced a $500,000 grant<br />

f rom the U.S. De p a rtment of Energy to<br />

s u p p o rt the creation of the In i t i a t i ve of<br />

Excellence <strong>in</strong> Science and Te c h n o l o g y<br />

at Scranton Pre p a r a t o ry School and the<br />

Un i ve r s i t y. The summer <strong>in</strong>ternship with<br />

Scranton Prep students and faculty is<br />

p a rt of this <strong>in</strong>itiative.
