“Without music
life would be a mistake.”
This sentence by Friedrich Nietzsche brings reverent praise to the sensory
stimulation known as music. This wonderful, invisible, expressive art form has
shown a remarkable tendency to indelibly affect the lives of almost everyone it
touches, and many of us can easily recall times in our lives in which music has
played a major role. We seek to revisit those formative experiences in every
note we hear, as well as to discover new sonic journeys to enrich and inspire us.
Original sound
The fidelity (or precision) of the sonic reproduction is one of the most significant
parts of this experience. Every audiophile wants to be as close as possible
to the true sound of the original source: Jimi Hendrix’ guitar, Louis Armstrong’s
trumpet, the grand piano of Glenn Gould should all sound like they did when
they were originally played, recorded and mixed. The goal is listening to their
sound, not the sound of loudspeakers.
ADAM monitors – at home in the best studios worldwide
This is the reason why ADAM monitors have managed to set new benchmarks
in many studios worldwide. Their precision and transparency have convinced
numerous audio engineers that ADAMs are the best tools available for professional
monitoring. They guarantee the finest possible reproduction, the most
authentic sound.
ADAM loudspeakers – studio quality at home
Now, ADAM Audio brings this sonic fidelity previously only available to industry
professionals to the home environment. You can hear your music on loudspeakers
with the same sonic signature as those on which the music was actually
produced. It’s the professional world of sound in your own space.
Allow us to introduce you to this new world of sound on the following pages.
Allow your ears to listen to this new world of sound. And experience your
music in a completely new way.
No longer is music restricted to a single room in the home. Over the last years,
portable units like MP3 players, smart phones, desk and laptop computers and
streaming clients offer music virtually anywhere you go. Often these sources
can be connected into multi-room systems and distributed throughout the
house, but having a pre-amplifier and amplifier or a receiver at every location is
not viable.
The answer to these requirements is a small active speaker that has its own
built in amplifier and the ability to connect to virtually any source. ADAM Audio
is proud to introduce the ARTist line of active speakers. The ARTist-Series
stands up to these requirements and offers world class performance in a compact
design for consumer use.
ADAM Audio’s excellent heritage as one of the leading high performance
recording studio monitor manufacturers can be heard in the new ARTist series.
Sound engineers around the world use ADAM studio monitors to create and
analyze their work. The new ARTist speaker’s design is based on ADAM’s
professional monitors and use identical driver technology and amplification to
the studio monitors. The new high performance X-ART tweeter, a unique ADAM
Audio design that accelerates air four times faster than any classic driver, can
be found throughout the ARTist-Series. Combine this tweeter with a sophisticated
woofer, an electronic crossover and built-in dedicated amplifiers for each
driver and you can enjoy the high performance of the studio sound in your own
home or office.
The ARTists combine ADAM’s unique sound quality with the advantages of the
active technology. Due to their vast array of inputs these speakers can truly be
called universal geniuses, since they can be used in almost any audio set up.
ARTist 3 / ARTist 5 Connection
Universal: a wealth of connections
The brand new ARTist series does not only fascinate due to
their compact dimensions and beautiful design but also – as
you would expect from ADAM Audio – their superior sound
quality. On top of that, both smaller models offer a multitude
of inputs.
Both the ARTist 3 and ARTist 5 have no less than four different
inputs: RCA (Cinch), XLR, a 3.5 mm mini stereo jack
and an USB port. This multitude of possible inputs allows the
ARTist’s to connect to just about any analog or digital music
Convenient: the stereolink
The stereolink that both the ARTist 3 and ARTist 5 offer, enables
the control of the overall output level of both speakers
through either one of the two volume knobs according to how
they are connected.
It redefines the more familiar master-slave-configuration
because each speaker can be in control of the overall volume.
This allows for an easier set-up and change of the set-up. Just
connect the source to one speaker, then this speaker to the
second and the system is ready to go.
ARTist Series
ARTist 3
With the ARTist 3, ADAM Audio present their smallest monitor
to date, making it perfectly suited for all environments where
space is limited but sound shouldn’t be constricted. The ARTist
3 features the X-ART tweeter for the higher frequencies,
a guarantee for crystal clear music reproduction. Countless
studios around the globe are already using the X-ART technology
in their ADAM monitors and treasure the market leading
precision and clarity these speakers offer.
A 4.5” (basket) driver handles the lower registers. A diaphragm
made from carbon fiber, a material that is very light
but very stiff, delivers colouring-free sound. Two built-in 25
Watt amplifiers power each of the drivers directly.
The back offers two M6 screw threads for attaching a wall
holder and furthermore a controller for fine tuning the highfrequency
levels.
Basic technical data at a glance
• X-ART tweeter
• 4,5“ midwoofer
• 2 x 25W amplification
• tweeter gain on the rear panel
• on/off-switch and gain control on the front panel
• inputs: RCA, XLR , 3,5 mm jack, USB
• 60Hz - 50kHz
• 5 years warranty
ARTist 5
The similar dimensions and name could make one believe that
the ARTist 5 is nothing more than a revamped version of the
multiple awards winning A5. Comparing the sound of the A5
to the ARTist 5 however leaves no doubt that the ARTist 5 is
much more than that.
Just like all other models of the ARTist-Series it features the
proprietary X-ART tweeter. The very data of this technology
shows that it is at the forefront of what tweeters can accomplish.
Numerous listening tests have confirmed this.
A 5.5” Midwoofer reproduces the frequencies below 2.5kHz.
The diaphragm is made from Carbon fiber/Rohacell/Glass
fiber. This material with minimum weight and maximum rigidity
prevents break up resonances, resulting in an outstanding
dynamic behaviour and impeccable sound characteristics.
ARTist Series
ARTist 6
The visual elegant floorstanding ARTist 6 with its black glossy
or white glossy finish is a feast for the eyes in every living room.
Whether as a stereo system or as part of a 5.1 setup, the ARTist
6 is a symbolization of a clear and high-defined sound within
your own four walls.
The new X-ART tweeter, a milestone in electroacoustic transducers,
developed by ADAM Audio, is probably the most efficient
tweeter in the world. While the new X-ART tweeter, driven
by a specially designed A/B amplifier, makes even the most
subtle details of the high range frequencies audible, the low
range shows impressive power accompanied by outstanding
accuracy. The sound capacity of the low ranges is far beyond
what one would expect from a speaker this size.
The power switch as the adjustment controls for treble level
and two shelvefilters for high and low frequencies can be found
on the back of the speaker. Unlike the tweeter control, which
raises or lowers the entire level, the two shelf filters change
the level of the low and mid frequencies progressively. These
filters are especially good for fine-tuning the sound to fit the
spatial conditions.
The ARTist 6 was designed to function as a stereo speaker or
as part of a 5.1 surround sound system. It functions both as a
front loud speaker as part of a mulit-channel system or as part
of a classical stereo setup. The ARTist 6 will function as either
and offers a clear compression free and high definition sound
in your own home.
Basic technical data at a glance
• X-ART tweeter
• 2 x 4.5“ midwoofer
• 3 x 35W amplification
• tweeter & input gains on the rear panel
• 2 shelf filters on the rear panel
• inputs: RCA, XLR
• 48Hz - 50kHz
• 5 years warranty

ARTist Center
The ARTist Center and Sub have been designed to complement
the ARTist main speakers in a multichannel system on a high
class sound level.
To achieve sound patterns as homogeneous as possible, the
components of the Center are identical with those of the ARTist
6: the new X-ART tweeter is flanked by two 4.5“ woofers.
On the rear side is a panel with several controls: the power
switch as well as the tweeter gain and two shelf filters for high
and low frequencies.
Basic technical data at a glance
• 3 x 35W amplification
• tweeter & input gains on the rear panel
• 2 shelf filters on the rear panel
• inputs: RCA, XLR
• 55Hz - 50kHz
• 5 years warranty
ARTist Sub
The ARTist Sub perfectly complements ADAM Audio´s new
ARTIST-Series. Its small dimensions allow for an easy placement
even in small environments.
The front panel features two motorized potentiometers that let
you adapt the input level and crossover frequency settings for
the best performance. These pots can also be controlled with
an included wireless remote control, allowing you to optimize
your sound reproduction from your ideal listening position.
The ARTist Sub is equipped with both balanced (XLR) and
unbalanced (RCA or Cinch) in and output connectors and numerous
controls. A 0°/180° phase switch and a switchable
85 Hz highpass filter allows you to find the best settings for an
ideal sound and performance.
Column - Page 15
Soon after the introduction of the first series of the Classic speakers, they became
well known as a glamorous way to enjoy the unique sound of the professional
ADAM studio monitors. There are four main reasons for their success:
The series is well suited for most room sizes due to the elaborate model concept;
these speakers can be used in both stereo and multichannel applications;
the attractive fine-furniture finishes; and the option of either active or passive
designs have gained them their well deserved respect and popularity.
The third generation of the Classic series profits from technological improvements
and new materials of the award winning high-end TENSOR series.
Starting with the outward appearance, the Mk3 versions of the Classic series
present themselves with a new and very attractive design. Improvements can
not only be seen on the surface but include all aspects relevant to the quality of
sound reproduction.
The ADAM proprietary ART transducers, already a legend in professional studios
and used in the older Classic series, gave way to their successors, the new X-
ART transducers (see page 30). This new transducer has an extended (‘X’) frequency
response and a higher efficiency. The new lower midrange drivers and
woofers match the ones used in the ultra high-end Tensor series. In addition,
the bigger Classic MK3 models are equipped with new base plates and spikes
to improve the decoupling from the floor.
Another new feature found in the active Classic MK3 speaker is the A/B amplifier,
which has been designed by ADAM to perfectly complement the X-ART
tweeter. This amplifier ensures that one of the outstanding features of the
tweeter, its frequency response up to 50kHz, can be realized with no limitations.
Compact Mk3
As the name implies, the Compact is small in size. However,
its compact dimensions make the sound qualities even more
staggering. The clarity and precision of sound representation
are the characteristics that let this smallest member of the
Classic family play in the same league as his bigger siblings.
The Compact features the same technologies and materials
found in the other members of the series.
Equipped with one X-ART tweeter and a further developed
7.5“ HexaCone-woofer, the Compact is bound to replicate any
sound with the highest prescision, with natural sounding mids
and on the spot bass.
“Especially at a low volume, so the neighbors
won’t complain after ten in the evening, the
ADAM sounded as big as hardly any other
speaker would.” Audio, 02/2010
“This speaker delivers a wonderful high level of
neutrality and excels in presenting (…) a lifelike
representation. This is a speaker that will
please all expectations.” Digital Tested, 04/2010
The active version is driven by an A/B amplifier for the
tweeter and a high class PWM amplifier for the low frequencies.
Both amps are perfectly synchronized with the drivers.
The active version has a multitude of potis that enable the
tweaking of the sound according to personal taste or the
spatial circumference. The average level can be adjusted from
-10dB to +10dB. The level of the tweeter is adjustable between
-4dB and +4dB. Furthermore there are two shelvefilters
for high and low frequencies that can be raised or lowered
progressively.
The Compact is an ideal choice for both stereo and surround
sound setups. The Compact Mk3: A tiny sound giant.
Basic technical data at a glance
• X-ART tweeter
• 7.5“ HexaCone midwoofer
• 50W/200W amplification
• numerous controls on the rear panel
• 38Hz (active) / 40Hz (passive) - 50kHz
• XLR (active) or speaker terminal (passive)
• 5 years warranty

Center Mk3
The Center and the SW260 have been designed to show the
potential of a multichannel system on the Classic-level. The
Center has identical components as the Pencil, ensuring
outstanding sound quality and perfect compatibility with
the other products of the Classic-series. It has extensive
possibilities for sound adjustments (for details see Compact)
that leave room for tweaking according to preferences and
surroundings.
The Center incorporates the new X-ART tweeter which is flanked
by two 7.5“ HexaCone-woofers. The latter is made up out
of a very light yet still highly durable composite. The result of
this enhanced stability is best heard in the clean basses and
the precise high frequencies plus undistorted mids.
Basic technical data at a glance
• X-ART tweeter
• 2 x 7.5“ HexaCone midwoofer
• 50W/2 x 200 W amplification
• numerous controls on the rear panel
• 38Hz (active) / 40Hz (passive) - 50kHz
• XLR (active) or speaker terminal (passive)
SW260
The task of the SW260 is to expand both power and precision
in the bass area of either a stereo system or as part of a bigger
multichannel system (e.g. 5.1). With its 10” diaphragm the
SW260 is bound to release a thunderstorm of sound in the
lower frequencies.
Numerous controls ensure that the subwoofer can be perfectly
adjusted to harmonize with the satellites. For example,
there is a level control, a phase switch (±180°), a variable upper
barrier frequency (50-150Hz), and a switchable 85Hz high
pass filter for satellite output that will replicate film sound as
it is meant to be heard.
“The sound the SW260 was characterized
through striking precision and detail yet at
the same time offering uncanny depth. This
is a fully-developed generalist with a lot of
reserves.” stereoplay, 07/2010
Classic Mk3 Series
Pencil Mk3
The Pencil Mk3 also incorporates the X-ART tweeter, “an
excellent piece of craftsmanship” (Audio Media, 09/2009),
to distinguish the finest nuances in the high frequencies and
offer the listener only the most precise sound.
The elegance this standing speaker offers will fascinate the
listener. Opposed to the slender design the sound is quite the
opposite, at least when it comes to the deep and powerful
bass. The main reason for this impressive power is the
distribution of the deeper frequencies, in combination with
the materials and drivers. One of the two woofers acts as a
full-range driver with the second woofer joining it only below
150Hz. This unusual approach effectively doubles the area
and power of the low frequency woofer.
Basic technical data at a glance
Column Mk3
With a height of well over 120 cm (48inches), the Column
is the towering model of the Classic range and the first HiFi
speaker to feature the X-ART mid-range. This enhancement
of the principle also used for the X-ART tweeter, brings all the
advantages of sound characteristics from the high to the mid
frequencies, which are especially important when listening to
music. On top of that, the Column features the X-ART tweeter
– a perfect combination for all sound ranges.
Furthermore, the Column carries two new HexaCone-woofers,
that work as those found in the Pencil. This enables a strong
bass that perfectly matches the acoustic qualities of the X-
ART mid-range and tweeter.
Basic technical data at a glance
• X-ART tweeter
• X-ART midrange
Epsilon
With the Epsilon, ADAM presents the smallest member of the
Tensor family, a 2-way-speaker with the new X-ART tweeter,
ADAM‘s proprietary transducer technology. It achieves an
improvement in air loading by a factor of 4 over conventional
transducers, and thereby an unparalleled resolution and
airiness. The tweeter is driven by ADAMs brand new A/B
amplifier.
A 7.5“ HexaCone-woofer is in charge of the bass and middle
frequencies. The core is a honeycomb structure made of
Nomex® that has been coated with Kevlar® on both sides. The
result is an outstanding rigidity and thus leads to the most
accurate sound production. While the bass is driven by a powerful
PWM amplifier, the Epsilon’s X-ART tweeter is powered
by a specially designed A/B amplifier.
Basic technical data at a glance
Delta
The Delta is the larger one of the two new compact Tensor
models. The 3-way-speaker combines two X-ART transducers
(tweeter and midrange). X-ART (which stands for eXtended
frequency response) means a further development of the
famous ADAM ART technology, already a legend in many
recording facilities. The Delta is the smallest speaker that
employs the unique ADAM X-ART midrange.
Two built-in perfectly adjusted PWM amplifiers deliver 250W
for the midrange and the 9” HexaCone-woofer that is capable
of reproducing frequencies as low as 30Hz. ADAMs new
A/B amplifier, which has been specifically designed for this
tweeter, powers the high frequencies.
Gamma
With its height of 110cm, the Gamma is the smallest floorstanding
speaker of the Tensor family. The complex sand filled
single piece enclosure houses one 9” HexaCone woofer at
the front and one at the back, each driven by a 250 W amplifier.
This active bass section creates both a depth and a precision
of reproduction that is unequalled by other loudspeakers
of comparable size.
The new X-ART transducers are used for mid and high
frequencies, guaranteeing consistently amazing performance
that is simply unique in its clarity, airiness and precision. The
X-ART technology is a advancement on ADAM’s renown ART
technology and forms the core of these speakers.
The semi-active version is equipped with top quality, WBT
populated bi-wiring terminals. The fully active version has
two more 250W PWM amplifiers, the new A/B amplifier for
the tweeter and premium balanced (XLR) input connectors.
Numerous controls are provided so that both versions can be
Beta
The 128cm high Beta is the middle loudspeaker of the floorstanding
Tensors. It consists of two separate cabinets decoupled
by special sandbags. The Beta features two electronically
equalized 11“ HexaCone woofer (front/rear mounted) which
are each driven by a 250 W amplifier.
The upper unit features a 7.5” HexaCone woofer midrange,
one X-ART midrange and one X-ART tweeter. This combination
achieves a stunningly detailed yet natural resolution of
the crucial middle frequencies.
The complex sandwich-designed enclosures have a sand
Alpha
The Alpha embodies everything that is technically possible
– and a few things previously thought to be impossible – to
reproduce music in a breathtakingly authentic manner in your
home.
Two 13” HexaCone woofers provide the foundation for a
breathtaking bass. Each one is driven by a 500 W amplifier
and electronically equalized, resulting in explosive dynamics
and an astonishing lower cut-off frequency of 20 Hz.
The upper cabinet possesses an impressive array that
produces all the frequencies above 85 Hz: two 9” HexaCone
woofer midrange drivers, two X-ART midrange units and one
X-ART tweeter.
Due to the symmetrical design (an advanced D’Appolito array)
in relation to the tweeter, extraordinary and exceptionally
favourable radiation characteristics are achieved, and
reflections from the ceiling or the floor are notably reduced.
Consequently, the spatial information in stereo configuration
is outstanding, and the dynamic behaviour is of an
unchallenged quality.
Gamma’s top of the range components. This results in sound
patterns being as homogeneous as possible.
The two 9” HexaCone woofers, driven by a 250W PWM
amplifier each, allow for an exceptionally precise bass as
well as powerful, detailed low mids. The midrange driver
and the tweeter are ADAM’s further developed new X-ART
drivers. They guarantee a resolution and a richness of detail
that cannot be achieved with conventional technologies. The
SW393
The challenging task of the SW393 is to equip any high end
multichannel system with unparalleled power and depth.
Whilst at the same time the goal of all ADAM subwoofers has
been maintained: The voluminous bass never allows a lack of
precision and accuracy.
A 1000W PWM amplifier drives the 15” diaphragm and works
with a very strong neodym magnet and an underhang ‘long
The SW393 features a wide range of very useful and highly
sophisticated controls. There is, for example, a phase switch,
TENSOR Technology
The quarz sand in between two layers of wood is visible through
three ‘windows’.
The Speakon®-cable ensures a lossless transmission.
The two separate cabinet units are decoupled by three (Beta) or
four (Alpha) special leather bags with sand filling.
The second woofer on the back neutralizes distortions and creates
even more depth and power.
The backpanel offers numerous controls to adapt the speaker to
different room acoustics or personal tastes.

Impulse Coupling
Larger loudspeakers have a tendency to generate strong vibrations,
which can cause the front panel of the cabinet to produce unwanted
resonances. ADAM Audio’s Impulse Coupling is a significant improvement
of the mechanical coupling between woofer and cabinet. Each
chassis is mounted on an ultra stiff aluminum honeycomb plate that
is acoustically completely dead. The result of the drivers being much
more firmly anchored in this manner is that their time behavior (and
consequently their clarity) is audibly and measurably improved.
Precision and Adaptation through Control
It is not the loudspeaker alone that is responsible for what we hear –
but also the environment in which the speaker resides. To that end, all
Tensors offer numerous controls that provide for the optimal adaption
to the acoustics of any room. For example, tweeter and midrange can
be fine-tuned independently from each other (active versions only).
Additionally, a parametrical equalizer allows for precise bass adjustments.
With this equalizer, one can solve many specific problems of
room acoustics and also fine-tune the sound of the loudspeaker to
one’s own preferences.
Separate Cabinets and – Sand
One of the most striking visual features of the Alpha and the Beta
Tensors are their separate bass cabinets, but it is a feature that
serves much more than visual effects. The design follows the purpose
of improving the sound quality: The upper part rests on specially
designed sandbags, which sit on the bass unit. In effect, this sand
damping achieves a complete decoupling that prevents interactions
or interferences between bass and midrange/tweeter. This results in
significantly improved impulse behavior.
Sand proved to be a blessing in disguise regarding another damping
issue with conventional loudspeakers. Every single loudspeaker emits
waves not only from the front, but also in the rear. These “backwards”
waves go through the cabinet, causing it to vibrate and adding to the
waves emitted to the front, resulting in a degradation of the overall
sound. To address this problem, the cabinets of all Tensors feature
a sandwich construction consisting of one layer of sand between
two layers of wood. This construction damps the cabinet in a highly
effective manner, essentially eliminating detrimental vibrations
and resulting in a significantly improved clarity of the overall sonic
performance.
Force Compensation
Two HexaCone woofers work against each other in the bass cabinet,
so the opposite forces compensate each other. This configuration
neutralizes distortions typically found in classic cabinet designs
with only one woofer. The bass tubes fire downward, preventing
disturbing port noise due to their wide aperture.
Olympus Sound System
Homage to Perfection
To pay homage to perfection: That is the goal of the
Olympus Sound System. Its claim is simple: to be the most
ambitious, most complex, and most innovative of all existing
speaker systems.
Every last bit of creative, mechanical and technical potential
ADAM scientists could call on has been realized in this loudspeaker
system. It is actually accurate to call it incomparable,
since it is completely unique and therefore in a class of
its own. All aspects of the best possible sound reproduction
regardless of costs or size have been optimized and integrated
in a surprising new concept. Every detail has been
painstakingly pored over with the utmost meticulousness.
Benchmark in loudspeaker development
We proudly present a system consisting of eight columns,
twelve built-in amplifiers, sixty (yes, 60!) individual drivers
and a DSP “brain”. Due to the modular nature of the system,
a variety of fascinating and comprehensive designs are possible.
From the outset, the Olympus knew only one purpose:
to realize a loudspeaker system that gets closer to perfection
than any other.
As little as language can convey the impact of music, so
little can words begin to communicate the sonic experience
produced by this loudspeaker system. There is only one way
to truly become a believer – to make the acquaintance of
this milestone in the development of audio reproduction…
but be prepared to spend some time - it will be an acquaintance
of a unique kind…an experience you will never forget.
19“ woofer with neodyme
magnet and 4“ voice coil
OSS Audio Processor
At the core of the Olympus, there is a digital audio processor
that prepares and optimizes the input signal for further
processing in several ways (frequency-separating filter,
delays, IIR and FIR filters, etc.). It features both a digital
and an analogue input and is equipped with double AD/
DA converters – the second converter works in the area of
smallest signals to achieve improved distortion and noise
values. This guarantees dynamics of more than 27 bit (!)
at 192 kHz sampling frequencies. Any sonic losses can be
eliminated this way.
Bass range re-experienced
Each of the subwoofer columns feature two 19” woofers,
which are equipped with a high efficiency neodymium
magnet and double spiders. Each subwoofer is driven by a
1.000 Watt PWM amplifier. The enormous 4” voice coils are
capable of putting power of corresponding magnitude into
absolutely precise lowest frequencies. The enormous ‘shortwound’
voice coils are able to execute a linear excitation
of ± 2.5 cm without increasing distortions. With moderate
insertion of bass-reflex support they are tuned to a low cutoff
frequency of 18 Hz.
Radiation Characteristics
The ADAM Olympus is capable of generating three different
radiating characteristics: monopole (‘normal’), dipole, and
bipole.
“...the overall size and scale of the music
was actually as realistic as one could
summon at a trade show. This is the art of
making a loudspeaker disappear no matter
its girth.”
People are often astounded by the fact that in only a few years ADAM Audio
became one of the leading manufacturers of professional studio monitors.
Moreover, these monitors enjoy an impeccable reputation for their excellent
sound and, last but not least, ADAMs home speakers follow the path of success
of their professional ‘relatives’. Actually, this is all due to two cornerstones:
the declared intention to achieve the best possible sound whatever
the conditions (like dimensions etc.) are and the ability to realize this. One of
the requirements for this is the technology used in speaker systems.
Right from the start, ADAM has been at the forefront of technological
progress. The Accelerating Ribbon Technology (ART) is a true progress at the
core of the matter and already a living legend in this field. The implementation
and development of the best available amplifiers for active systems is
another important aspect. The same is true for the exclusive application of
top-quality materials like HexaCone-woofers.
On the following pages you will find descriptions and explanations of some
of ADAMs technological features, of which many have been created from
scratch by ADAM. These features are the backbone of what thrills so many
listeners all around the globe, disregarding whether it is a professional sound
engineer or a passionate music lover: purest audio.
discussion about the project 1982
ART & X-ART Technology
Driver/air-ratio of conventional constructions
Every loudspeaker transforms electrical impulses into sound
waves. An essential part of the precision of this transformation
– and therefore of the sound – is directly related to the
velocity with which the sound waves can be excited. ADAM
Audio’s Accelerated Ribbon Technology (ART), a further development
of the famous ‘Air Motion Transformer’ by Dr. Oskar
Heil, takes a completely new approach to the kinematics of
moving air to substantially improve music reproduction.
Driver/air-ratio of conventional constructions
All other conventional loudspeaker drive units act like a piston,
moving air in a 1:1 ratio with regard to the motion of the
driver. The problem with this is that the specific weight of air
is much lower than that of the driving mechanism. As a result,
the air does not couple effectively with the transducer. The
analogous situation in electrical terms is described as bad
impedance matching between source and load. In both cases
(acoustic and electrical), the result is less-than-optimal power
transfer: usually, loudspeakers have a degree of efficiency of
a mere 1-2%.
The ART principle
The ART membrane, on the other hand, consists of a pleated
diaphragm in which the folds compress or expand according
to the audio signal applied to them. The result is that air is
drawn in and squeezed out, like the bellows of an accordion
(see figure: The ART Principle).
The ADAM ART design achieves an improvement in air loading
by a factor of four over conventional transducers. To illustrate
the basic principle by a comparison: when you breathe, your
thorax is moving slowly whereas the air is moving comparably
fast. Similarly, the ART diaphragm presses the air faster in or
out its folds than they move themselves.
This vastly superior “motor” is responsible for the unprecedented
clarity and transient reproduction that can be heard
from the ART drive units. The result is a dramatically improved
quality of music reproduction.
The ART Principle Construction of an ART tweeter

Even more advantages of ART
In addition to the improved air coupling, the ART tweeter’s
pleated membrane avoids the typical breakup and subsequent
dynamic limiting at higher frequencies of stiffer voice coil
designs, such as those found in dome and cone tweeters.
Another positive result of the ART design is that the driving
”stripes” are in direct contact with the outer air and are
cooled immediately. Thermal power handling of the units is
increased, surpassing that of 1” domes by a factor of more
than 2:1.
Reactions of the audio world
From the outset, the sonic qualities of ART have caused
enthusiastic responses amongst experts and laypersons
alike. Here is just one rather early example: “The differences
between them and units using conventional HF drivers is a
bit hard for me to put into words, but euphonic comes to my
mind. It‘s easy to hear the reasons that the ADAM monitor
line has attracted a large group of dedicated fans, and […]
the legion of ADAM loyalists is likely to continue to grow.“ Pro
Sound News (USA), 02/2004
X-ART Hochtöner X-ART Mitteltöner
The new X-ART transducers
Due to the development of new materials, it has become possible
for ADAM to significantly improve the highly acclaimed
ART technology. The new X-ART (‘X’ for eXtended frequency
response) features an even higher degree of efficiency, higher
sound pressure levels, and another extension of the frequency
response.
• The X-ART tweeter exhibits a 3 dB higher efficiency and
a 5 dB higher SPL. In addition, the frequency response can
extend up to 50 kHz (at -3 dB point).
• The X-ART midrange unit shines with a 2 dB higher efficiency
and a 3 dB higher SPL.
The result simply is astounding: a clarity, airiness and precision
in the high and mid frequencies that was not possible
before. With the X-ART technology, ADAM reinforces its
commitment to offer the best transducer systems currently
available at any price.
Amplifier Technology
PWM amplifier
In recent years amplifier technology experienced its second
big change after going from tubes to transistors some 40
years ago. You can still find semiconductors in this new
generation of amplifiers, but the signals to be amplified are
treated in a completely new and different way.
PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) – sometimes referred to as
Class D amplification, sometimes called Switching Amp Technology
– converts the incoming signal to a series of rectangular
waveforms of equal height. The width of the rectangles
varies in time and the relation of the width of the rectangles
represents the musical signal. This waveform can be amplified
much more simply, as the transistors are not modulated
anymore; instead they are used as switches that only turn the
power supply voltage on and off.
Advantages of PWM
The main advantage of PWM amplifiers is their extremely high
efficiency (>90%). As a consequence the heat to be dissipated
is only one fifth of earlier designs, leading to much lower
temperatures within the amps and making the use of heat
sinks obsolete.
200 W PWM amplifier module
Brand new A/B amplifiers for X-ART
Every progress comes with new questions and difficulties. The
new X-ART tweeter with its extended frequency band up to 50
kHz (-3 dB point) caused an interesting kind of problem: PWM
amplifiers need a low pass filter to separate the modulation
frequency from the audio band, and this can limit the
reproduction capabilities of the new tweeter.
The perfect partner for X-ART
ADAM decided to design its own high frequency power amp
to allow the new high frequency unit to live up to its unique
talents. A power amp module was created that shows ultra low
distortion figures together with an excellent damping factor.
An internal bandwith of more than 1 MHz is externally limited
so that the unit delivers an ultra wide response up to 300
kHz. With nothing limiting the talents of the X-ART tweeter,
the monitor has unsurpassed clarity and openness which
will please, amaze and thrill even the most experienced
professional ear.
As unspectacular it looks, as spectacular is the audible result:
A/B amplifier for the new X-ART tweeter

HexaCone Woofer
The HexaCone-woofer
The core of HexaCone woofers is a honeycomb Nomex
structure that makes them both extremely light and very
stiff. The front and back of the cone have been coated with
Kevlar, one of the most advanced synthetic materials
available. Kevlar withstands elongation by a force factor
greater than 1000 times that of steel, enabling the cone to
resist deformation.
No break-up resonances
HexaCone woofers are far more rigid than paper or aluminum
devices of similar dimensions. Due to this rigidity, break
up resonances in the diaphragm cone are prevented. The
effective length and diameter of the voice coils in conjunction
with the size of the magnets and the available cabinet volume
are all precisely aligned for a musically optimal low frequency
reproduction.
Authenticity instead of inadequate pressure levels
Another general problem observed frequently in many socalled
reference speakers is a disproportionate low frequency
volume. With massive woofers (and frequently inadequate
acoustic pressure levels!), the average listener is supposed
to be impressed. However, this approach results in an
inaccurate representation of the overall sound quality. ADAM
woofers have been designed to reproduce the given sound
material with the highest possible authenticity.
Quality management
All ADAM speakers are developed and manufactured in Berlin,
Germany all under one roof. In 2008, ADAM moved into a
new, much bigger facility, where every single loudspeaker
is designed, assembled, tested, packed, and shipped. This
means that from conception to delivery, every product is
subjected to the same high quality controls. Only these high
principles can guarantee we can meet the claim of ADAM
speaker systems to be amongst the best loudspeakers
today. For years, the very name ADAM has been a synonym
for highest possible quality in acoustical reproduction and
craftsmanship. The ability to place all working processes
under one roof with continuous quality management ensures
that this will stay that way.
Craftmansship and testing
Accuracy is indispensable in ADAM‘s high quality standards
for all production and measurement processes. As part of
that, every ART and X-ART tweeter and midrange is being
intricatly crafted and tested by hand at ADAM’s facility. The
final tests include all important electro-acoustic parameter:
impedance, absolute frequency response, sensitivity level,
relative frequency response to reference standard, phase
characteristics, impulse response, absolute phase, and
harmonic distortion factor.

Reviews Some Excerpts
CLASSIC Compact Mk3
“Especially at a low volume, so the neighbors won’t complain
after ten in the evening, the ADAM sounded as big as hardly
any other speaker would. (…) The high and precise resolution
and the realistic representation of the voices were beautiful.
To sum it up: ADAM’s active speakers are not only a practical
solution, such features as equalizers or XLR-sockets are
a help for everyone. Along with an adjustable source one
receives the purest system that one can dream of. Less is
more, even with sound.”
Audio (Germany), 02/2010
“The impulse fidelity leaves an especially good impression
when listening to drums or natural sound which the X-ART-
Tweeter delivers through its excellent stereo localization. (…)
This speaker delivers a wonderful high level of neutrality and
excels in presenting an acoustical stage, on which the spatial
placement of the orchestra has a lifelike representation. This
is a speaker that will please all expectations.”
Digital Tested (Germany), 04/2010
PENCIL Mk3
“Very subtle and tonally well-balanced, highly vivid,
convincing spatiality. VERDICT: Absolute Top Class. PRICE
PERFORMANCE RATIO: Outstanding.”
Stereoplay (Germany), 11/2009
“The Pencil Mk3 has earned ADAM another generous
exclamation mark. This Berlin based company has shown
how one can advance form newcomer in the field to market
leader in the studio-monitors segment and turn into the
elite for the stereo-world. The wonderfully crafted casing
that comes with a ground plate and spikes, has placed the
foundation for a long success story. The speaker captivates
through its uncompromising use of materials and the carefully
crafted finish. […] The Pencil Mk3 excels through its direct
and unobtrusive rendition that encompasses a structured
and precise mid-range along with a distinguished low-range
reproduction. The Pencil offers an ambiance that immerses
the listener completely in the action – a captivating sound
experience that places you right on the stage.”
HiFi Online (Germany), 12/2009
“Verdict: High quality floorstander with a musical yet highly
explicit sound.”
Hi-Fi World (GB), 06/2010
“The Adam Pencil MK3 speaker features a strong sound
personality and a wide dynamic response without
compression. It accurately reproduces each word of vocal
parts with a natural and physical feel for rhythm. This Pencil
MK3 gives music a live character and is an effective therapy
against sound moroseness.”
Stereo Prestige & Image (F), 02/2010
COLUMN Mk3
“Neutral, highly precise speaker, at the same time very
comfortable to listen to and dynamic as well as subtle.
RATING: Outstanding, Highend-Class.”
Audio (Germany), 09/2009
“The Columns offer a playback free of any discoloration and
fascinate with their extraordinary resolution and a dynamic
playback. They encompass a wide frequency range and a
deep yet dry bass. One of their key elements is the replication
of the finest detail and their dynamic range graduation. The
ADAM’s will be treasured by those listeners seeking perfect
detail in their audio experience. Listeners that are searching
for a physically present bass will find the ADAM’s just as
pleasing.” fairaudio (Germany), 03/2010
SW260 Mk3
“With the powerful 10-inch and the ground facing reflex
opening, the ADAM is a typical representative of its type.
That the manufacturer has his roots in the Pro-Audio segment
can be best seen through the use of a high-pass filter
and the symmetric input jack. The sound the SW260 was
characterized through striking precision and detail yet at the
same time offering uncanny depth. This is a fully-developed
generalist with a lot of reserves.”
stereoplay (Germany), 07/2010
TENSOR Epsilon
“As rock-solid as the exterior was also the sound of the
Berliner. Despite the amazing opulence, the speaker went to
work without any ‘grease’, but bell-like pure and sensitive.
Despite the astonishing subtlety the speaker never became
annoying in any way, so any epicure who seeks tenderness
as well as any explorer who is unwilling to miss the smallest
detail will get what he is looking for. In addition, the Epsilon
showed a neutrality in reproduction that for passive speakers
to achieve would be an exceptional case—in much higher
price ranges.
Conclusion: Solidly manufactured active monitor with Air-
Motion-tweeter and local filters. Wonderfully controlled and
finest sound of highest maturity. Price/performance ratio:
outstanding”
stereoplay (Germany), 04/2009
TENSOR Delta
“Indeed, the ADAMs can be considered to be the first
compact speaker in the history of hi-fi that is interesting even
for those who seek to combine the easiness and implicitness
of foils with the resources of a dynamic speaker. […] thrilled
by the gigantic sound level […].
Rating: outstanding, highend-class”
AUDIO (Germany), 06/2009

Reviews Some Excerpts
TENSOR Gamma
„Build quality is excellent, while positioning is easy, thanks to
the speaker‘s unfussy nature and built-in equalisation. […] In
the end it‘s this transparency that sets these floorstanders
apart. They produce as clean and detailed a sound as we‘ve
heard, and they combine that with wide-ranging dynamics and
a bass that digs deep without dragging. […] As you might have
gathered, we‘re bowled over by these speakers. They combine
insight with power, dynamics with rhythmic drive and deep,
deep bass with ease of positioning. […] That spread of talents
is unheard of, even at this kind of money. If ADAM‘s other
products are this good, other high-end speaker companies
should worry.“
What HiFi (GB), 04/2009
“Conclusion: I was incredibly impressed by the ADAM Tensor
Gammas - their combination of staggering soundstaging,
deep, tight, tuneful bass and astounding realism that they
impart to music makes them one of the finest pairs of
loudspeakers I‘ve yet auditioned. If you like your loudspeakers
to have a nice, soft, fluffy, warm and cuddly presentation,
then they will not be for you. However, if you really want to
hear your music as it was intended and, unlike me, can afford
the £12,500 asking price, the Tensor Gammas should be right
at the very top of your audition list. Beware though, do heed
Sound on Sound magazine‘s words from 2006 regarding the
ADAM P11A monitors as I believe they apply in this case as
well, „hear them at your peril; you‘re unlikely to leave the shop
without them“!
Verdict: Magnificently designed and built monitor
loudspeakers with neutrality, central image stability and bass
like very few others. “
Hi-Fi World (GB), 07/2008
“The sound transparency is impressive thanks to the midrange
and high-range ribbon drivers. It’s especially remarkable
that it features a constant quality regardless of the loudness
whereas the sound never becomes harsh or tight even at very
high output level. Rhythm reproduction and overall sound
authenticity are always insured although the Tensor Gamma
develops an “explosive” dynamic response when it’s used in
such demanding applications.”
Haute Fidélité (France), 10/2008
TENSOR Beta
“The amazing neutrality comes along with a drive and a
spontaneity which to call ‘sensational’ would almost be an
understatement. The accession of the Beta was powerful and
yet effortless. Effects of idleness are unknown to the Beta.”
“To achieve this result of 64 sound points [out of 70] with
passive designs one easily has to spend twice as much. So
it is only hardcore devotees of passive loudspeaker systems
who need to worry”
“Price Performance Ratio: Outstanding”
stereoplay (Germany), 11/2007
„We test a large number of speakers every year. Some are
good, some are fantastic, and some make you forget to go
home for dinner, or to buy 4 liters of milk and a bread on your
way home. Tensor Beta is one of these loudspeakers that
makes you start counting your money to figure out how to be
able to purchase a pair. Maybe you do not have the money,
but you will seriously consider it anyway. Sell the car, maybe?
Conclusion: With Tensor Beta, you get a listening experience
where the typical „filter“ you experience with other
speakers is completely gone. They deliver a nearness to the
instruments and voices that is totally unique. One often talks
about wanting quietness, „black background“ and things like
that. With these speakers, it is almost ridiculous to talk about
these things. With Beta you can see all the way through the
sound stage. It is like experiencing a summer day after the
rain has washed the landscape. The sun looks at you between
the clouds and the entire world is shining clean - through new
clean „windows“ in your living room.“
Hjemmekino (Norway), 01/2009
“As ADAM decided to offer amplified speakers to the highend
hi-fi world, the manufacturer set itself a challenge and
actually tries to break a lot of taboos… and he’s right. After
having heard the Tensor Beta, it became evident to us that
they produce the best possible performance thanks to their
internal electronics.”
Prestige Audio Vidéo (France), 03-04/2009
TENSOR Alpha
“New Active-Speaker-Reference”
“We hardly ever came across such a benchmark concerning
neutrality.”
“Free of any kind of influence on the music the TENSOR lets
the music itself become a true experience. ...an overall result
that is convincing, even staggering.”
“We will remember the TENSOR Alpha as one of the highest
class and ‘highest fidelity’ loudspeakers we ever were allowed
to welcome in our listening rooms. ADAM’s ‘Alpha Animal’
strikes the perfect note in every respect!”
“Sound-Level: 100%”
Stereo (Germany), 05/2008
TENSOR Center
„It is so extremely accurate that this single speaker actually
creates a scene, a perspective and a width I would hardly
believe was possible with a single speaker. The resolution and
ability to reproduce details is on the absolute highest level.
Actually, the sound is so good, I immediately put the Tensor
Center on top of the list of the best center speakers I have
ever heard.“
