On the evening of 

December 4, the 25th day 

of the Hebrew month of 

Kislev, we will light the 

first Hanukkah candle. 

Hanukkah, which is 

celebrated for eight days, 

is a holiday primarily 

celebrated in the home. 

The lighting of the 

Menorah, Hanukkah 

music, playing Dreidel, and eating latkes are some 

of the traditions that add to the festivity of this 

holiday of lights. It is a wonderful holiday, filled 

with light and with important lessons. From 

Hanukkah we learn about heroism and about the 

right to be different, about faith and about miracles. 

Hanukkah celebrates the victory of the 

Maccabees over the Syrian Greeks who ruled Israel 

in 165 BCE. Judah Maccabee and his small army 

fought to restore religious freedom and Jewish 

sovereignty to ancient Israel. Victorious in battle, 

the Maccabees entered the holy Temple in 

Jerusalem, which had been defiled by the Greeks in 

pagan worship. It is from the Maccabee’s act of 

cleansing and rededicating the Temple that we 

come to the source of the name of the holiday, for 

the Hebrew word “Hanukkah” means “to dedicate.” 

It is also from this rededication that we have the 

story of the miracle of Hanukkah, the small jar of 

oil that burned for eight days. Over 300 years after 

the Maccabee’s victory, the rabbis emphasized the 

legend of the oil, in an effort to de-emphasize the 

military victory and give prominence to spiritual 

dedication. 

Today, in a flurry of gift-giving, Hanukkah has 

lost some of its spiritual glow. In order to rekindle 

the drama, each of us must think about what 

Hanukkah means and resolve to structure our lives 

so that our actions reflect the lessons we learn form 

this wondrous story. 

As you light your menorah this year, together 

with others in your home, ask the following 

questions: 

1. As you light on the first night, ask: Do I know 

any modern-day Maccabees? Is there anyone 

who works actively to defend not only his or 

her own rights, but also those of other groups?

Consider how the story of Hanukkah highlights 

the notions of freedom, identity, and faith; then 

identify the ways in which your modern-day 

Maccabees demonstrate an appreciation of 

these three concepts. 

2. As you light on the second night, ask: What 

does it mean to be part of a people? As a 

Jew, what special responsibilities do I have? 

Very often, we fall into the habit of thinking 

only about our own problems and ourselves. 

We lose track of the fact that we are part of a 

proud people, with a distinguished heritage. 

We may also neglect our spiritual lives, 

assuming others will preserve our religious 

teachings for us. 

3. As you light on the third night, ask: Have I 

‘proclaimed the miracle,’ helping someone 

understand the true meaning of the holiday? 

Hanukkah not only represents a military 

victory, but a spiritual victory, as well. Display 

your menorah in your window, demonstrate 

pride in your heritage, and sensitize neighbors 

to the holiday’s spiritual message. 

4. As you light on the fourth night, ask: Have I 

witnessed any miracles in my lifetime? 

Hanukkah celebrates the miracle of the small 

army defeating the mighty, and celebrates the 

daily miracles—the sun, a child’s birth and 

Israel. 

5. As you light on the fifth night, ask: Have I 

given Tzedakah today? Receiving gifts is fun, 

but it is also important to give something back. 

6. As you light on the sixth night, ask: Have I 

done anything to improve the world? 

Imagine ways you can make a difference— 

more recycling, letters to government officials 

and speaking out against discrimination. 

7. As you light on the seventh night, ask: Have I 

brought happiness into someone’s life 

today? A simple phone call can bring joy to 

another. Share the holiday with people in 

hospitals and nursing homes. 

8. As you light on the eighth night, ask: What 

questions will I ask myself as I light the 

candles next year? Jewish learning never 

comes to an end. Keep studying, keep reading 

and keep asking questions. Dedicate yourself to 

making Hanukkah next year one marked with a 

higher level of understanding.

How Good Can We Become? 

The Long Range Planning 

Committee has finalized its 

recommendations to the 

Executive Committee. Those 

ideas will be presented to the 

Board of Directors shortly and 

then to the entire congregation. 

The results of this process will 

resonate at TBS for years to 

come and are intended to 

position us to continue to 

improve and grow our position as 

one of the leading synagogues in 

the Conservative movement. 

But I ask myself, admittedly 

from a very different position 

than the one I held 13 months 

ago, do WE realize how good we 

are now and how good we can 

become? TBS members have 

always had a great reticence to 

appreciate our accomplishments 

and reputation. And that 

reputation started with our 

rabbis. When I attended a United 

Synagogue convention in 1992, a 

stranger came up to me, saw 

“Temple Beth Sholom, Cherry 

Hill, NJ” on my name tag and 

said, “Who’s your rabbi?” I said, 

“Albert Lewis.” He immediately 

smiled and said, “Ah, now that’s 

a rabbi!” 

Similarly, I was in Israel last 

November on a Masorti mission. 

We were a group of 40, with 

eight other TBSers and Rabbi 

Lindemann. Several synagogue 

leaders, having spent only four 

days with Rabbi Lindemann, told 

me how lucky we were to have 

him as our rabbi. 

We’ve been similarly fortunate 

(or smart?) when it came to 

recruiting our assistant rabbis.

President’s Message 

As my first six months as president draws to a close, I would like 

to thank the entire congregation for their support and 

encouragement. The role of president is not difficult when you have 

enthusiastic congregants at your shul. I am looking forward to the 

next eighteen months. 

We are about to embark on our Scholar-in-Residence weekend, 

featuring Joel Lurie Grishaver. Thank you to the Adult Education 

Committee led by Margery Dannenbaum and Dana Fallick. Make 

plans to attend the final event of our Chai celebration on January 5 

when we honor Rabbi Lindemann’s 18th anniversary at TBS and 

Rabbi Lewis for his 60 years of service to our shul. Please call the 

office for more details. Thank you to Naomi Schimmer and Robie 

Bloom for chairing our year-long Chai celebrations. 

Our Executive Director, Eric Jacobs, and I will attend the biennial 

United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism Convention in Orlando. 

TBS will be presented a Solomon Schechter Award for our 

Preschool Learning Program. Todah Rabah to Marcia Axler who 

was responsible for TBS’ receiving this award. 

We will hear from numerous speakers including the new 

chancellor of JTS, Dr. Arnold Eisen, and will attend a session with 

Ron Wolfson, author of “The Spirituality of Welcoming.” This book 

has been distributed to our Board of Directors, administrative staff 

and professional staff to refresh ourselves on the many opportunities 

we have daily to make TBS warmer and more welcoming to both 

new and current members. We will be attempting to implement 

many of his recommendations over the coming months and hope

Do You Know of a 

“Mitzvah Waiting to Happen” That May Need 

a Little Assistance? 

Table to Table’s Mission and TBS 

In January, 2003, a recent Israeli immigrant 

was troubled by the fact that while many Israelis 

were in need of food, so much food was being 

wasted. This troubling paradox led to the 

establishment of Table to Table. 

Table to Table is a 

national food rescue 

network, working day 

and night to ensure that 

quality excess food 

does not end up in 

garbage cans, but rather 

on the plates of hungry individuals. Table to 

Table collects food from wedding halls, 

corporate cafeterias, malls, restaurants, army 

bases, factories and farms. Thousands of meals, 

dairy products, tons of fruit and vegetables are 

collected and distributed to soup kitchens, food 

pantries, meals-on-wheels programs, afterschool 

initiatives, programs for seniors and 

homeless shelters. 

According to Israel’s National Insurance 

Institute 2004 Poverty Report: 

Over 22% of Israelis live below the poverty 

line 

Over 360,000 Israeli families are unable to 

meet their basic socioeconomic needs. 

Make a donation to TBS for Table to Table, 

and our Confirmation Class will take it to Israel, 

person-to-person, in mid-December. 

Cook for a Friend 

Congregants of all ages are invited to join us 

in the mitzvah of preparing food for the Jewish 

elderly. Cooking takes place in the TBS meat 

kitchen once a month at 6:30 pm. We dice, chop, 

sauté, bake, package and label. No experience is 

necessary. Upcoming cooking dates are:

Social Action Contributions 

When you are making contributions to TBS in 

honor or in memory of someone, or for a speedy 

recovery or yahrzeit, remember that there is a 

Social Action Fund whose monies help defray 

the cost of these projects. 

Blankets from the Heart 

Attention Knitters: The Virtua Hospital 

Neonatal Intensive Care Unit is in need of 

blankets for the babies. The blankets should be 

light weight and measure about 31 inches by 31 

inches. 

Also Wanted: Someone to sew together 

already knitted squares to make blankets to 

contribute to the hospital. If interested, please call

Mitzvah Day—May 4, 2008 

Congregants of all ages participate in social 

action projects at TBS as well as other locations 

in the community. Look for information about an 

organizational meeting if you would like to join 

the committee. New ideas are always welcome. 

Project JELLY 

This project is ongoing throughout the year. 

Children’s books are 

collected and sent to libraries 

in Jerusalem for children 

who want to read books in 

English. Edith Kalech, who 

initiated this project, receives 

heartfelt thanks from the Jerusalem library when 

they receive the boxes of books sent each year. 

Donations to Ancora Psychiatric Hospital 

Clothing, household items, recreational 

materials including games, videos, books, arts & 

craft supplies and greeting cards are all needed. 

Some items are used by the patients, others are 

sold in the thrift shop. Please keep the hospital in 

mind as you clean your closets for the fall season. 

We thank Cheryl Rosov for delivering the goods

From the Educational Director 

“How good it is that you came back home…” 

were the words of the song that we heard in Israel 

as soon as we boarded the bus. The music was great 

and the feelings were authentic. We were home! 

We visited many parts of Israel, we talked to many 

of its inhabitants, we tasted its many flavors and we 

saw its many colors. In the next Temple Talk, you 

will be able to read all about “home” as the trip 

participants share their experiences. 

The holiday of lights, vfubj, has a name that, in 

my mind, is always associated with the word lubj 

—Chee-nooch—education, or vfhbj—chah-neechah—dedication. 

Those who know me well, know 

how fascinated I am with the Hebrew language and 

how every word in Hebrew has a depth to it. Being 

an educator, it is only natural that this word will 

have a very special meaning for me. As educators, 

we are very dedicated to what we do and our 

dedication only brightens our students’ minds. 

At TBS we celebrate “Hanukkah” all year long 

with our activities and curriculum as presented in 

our classes. The gifts (for all of us who associate 

the holiday with that aspect of it) are plenty. Here 

are some of them:

An opportunity to visit our school during Open 

School Week 

A Dalet Siyum—students lead the service 

The Shorashim Youth Group is for Temple Beth 

Sholom’s 2nd and 3rd graders ONLY!

3:30 pm, at the Katz JCC indoor pool. Join us for 

swimming, playing and noshing with old friends 

and new.

Fridays are always special in the Preschool. 

Anticipation is in the air from the start of the day. 

Children enter the building to the sounds of their 

favorite Shabbat melodies. The classroom table is 

set with a beautiful tablecloth, a challah, a Kiddush 

cup and Shabbat candles. The children eagerly take 

coins out of their book bags to put in the Tzedakah 

box. They look forward to joining their classmates 

in the Bet Midrash for Kabbalat Shabbat. It is time 

to sing “Bim-Bam” as they march through the 

hallway knowing Shabbat is almost here. They are 

eager to greet “Sadie the Shabbat Lady” and 

Tookie (our Shabbat puppets). They love seeing 

which of their classmates will be honored as a 

Torah carrier and especially love when Rabbi 

Lindemann plays his guitar to teach them a new 

Shabbat song. 

Actively being involved in the preparation of 

Shabbat builds the importance of traditions as well 

as a child’s Jewish identity. A new addition to our 

curriculum has been developed by our Educational 

Director, Dina Eliezer, coordinated by Tamar 

Barkan-Shamir, and funded by the TBS 

Endowment Fund. Each Friday, every child will 

prepare and bake an individual challah to take 

home. The sensations of rolling and braiding the 

dough, smelling its aroma as it bakes, and finally 

sharing his or her challah with family will build 

Kadima & Chaverim 

Coming up for 4th and 5th graders, a 

Pool Party at the Katz JCC on 

December 2 from 1:45 pm to 3:30 pm. 

We’ll join with Shorashim (our 2nd 

and 3rd grade youth group) for an afternoon in the 

pool of fun, games, races, snacks and more. Cost is 

$8 per child, but sign up with a friend from TBS, 

and you’ll each save $1. 

It’s a Hanukkah celebration at 

Color Me Mine! Our Kadima 

members (6th and 7th graders) will 

meet at the store in Voorhees at ???? 

pm on December 9. Paint your own 

pottery to give as a Hanukkah gift or 

to keep for yourself. Cost is $18.

Four Fantastic BeST High School Hanukkah Happenings! 

On Wednesday evening, December 5 at 8:00 pm, join us for a Rock and Roll 

Hanukkah Concert with Sheldon Low. Sheldon is a top recording artist on the 

Jewish Rock Records label. Jewish teenagers across the country are listening 

to his music and flocking to his sold-out shows! 

On Tuesday, December 11 at 8:00 pm, come to a special Hanukkah Party and 

be entertained by our very own BeST actors from the “Sunday Mornings at the 

TBS Improv” Class. This unique show was written and 

directed by professional actor and long-time Jewish 

educator Michael Kelberg. 

On Wednesday, December 12, our BeST I students 

will spend the evening with the TBS Social Action 

Committee “Cooking for a Friend.” Students will have 

the opportunity to be a part of this award-winning TBS 

Sheldon Low 

program that benefits hundreds of seniors and families. 

On Sunday, December 16, after the conclusion of Hanukkah, our BeST III 

students will be traveling to the Jewish Relief Agency to help deliver food to the 

less fortunate. All BeST III parents are invited to join their teens.

Levenson have contributed significantly to “who 

we are and who we want to be,” and Rabbi Peltz 

is clearly doing so after only four months with us. 

Also, consider the following: 

Based on the feedback from a large number of 

congregants, this year’s High Holy Day “experience” 

was among the best ever for many of you. 

Our religious schools have always enjoyed a 

reputation as being among the best in the region, if 

not the country. 

Our Preschool is being revitalized, symbolized by the 

recent opening of the “Exploratorium” science center 

in cooperation with the Garden State Discovery 

Museum. 

We are well-represented on the boards of major 

Jewish institutions and organizations in the 

community and around the country. 

We contribute a significant amount of money 

annually to Masorti, JTS, Mercaz, Mazon, etc. 

We send many kids to Camp Ramah each year and to 

Jewish Day Schools. 

So what else do we need to do? Or, what am I 

asking YOU to do? 

In addition to your financial support which will 

always be necessary and which is always 

appreciated, I’m asking you to rediscover the 

spirit of volunteerism, a spirit which defined TBS 

many years ago. 

In a time of increasing pressures on our 

synagogue budget, we need to find ways to tap 

into alternative resources to accomplish what we 

need to do rather than just hire more staff. 

If each family volunteered just two hours per 

month, it would be equivalent to a full-time 

support person in the office. If you can make 

copies, stuff envelopes, type letters, clean, paint 

or do any number of other things, we will not only 

save money for TBS, but you will feel more 

involved with your synagogue. 

Many of you already volunteer a great deal of 

your time to help TBS and your efforts, whether 

externally or internally focused, are much 

appreciated. But together as a larger community, 

we can do even more. 

You will be hearing more about some initiatives 

to help energize the spirit of volunteerism in the 

months ahead. Think now about how you will 

answer the call when you’re asked.

HAZAK/Senior Chaverim 

HAZAK/Senior Chaverim was well-attended at 

its October meeting. We are currently planning a 

meeting in cooperation with Sisterhood and 

Men’s Club featuring film critic Bill Wine. 

Initiated by our group, we hope to hold this 

meeting on Sisterhood’s Movie Night, January 

29, 2008. 

We are also encouraging members to support 

the former Jewish Geriatric Home on Chapel 

Avenue in a program under the guidance of Ann 

Sundstrom. 

Jennifer Stofman has approached us to assist 

with a program that will introduce our high 

school students to active older adults who provide 

a healthy alterative to the ones they have been 

meeting in places like Brendenwood and nursing 

homes. In case you didn’t notice, we are still alive 

and kicking.

Ritual Committee 

A Tribute to Maurice Shaw 

Several days before Rosh Hashanah, I received a 

phone call from Maurice Shaw. This was in 

response to a Rosh Hashanah card that we had sent 

to him and his wife, Selma. For those of you who 

don’t know Maurice, let me give you a little 

background. He usually led the preliminary part of 

the service on Shabbat mornings (Birchot 

haShachar and Pzeukei D’zimra), and served as the 

gabbai, calling people up for their aliyot to the 

Torah. In addition, he was the Ba’al Shacharit on 

the High Holy Days for many years. He served as 

ritual chairman and an actor in TBS theatrical 

productions. As an immigrant from Wales, Maurice 

had a strong accent and a “bloody British” sense of 

humor. 

He thanked us for thinking of him and explained 

that lately his vision has been failing due to 

macular degeneration, and he can’t see well enough 

to write a card. He told me he was about the same 

age as Rabbi Lewis, and we chatted a bit about 

Rabbi Lewis. I told Maurice that we think of him 

frequently at TBS when services run past noon, and 

many of us remember how he would signal Rabbi

Young Members Group 

The TBS Young Members Group hosted its 

first Family Shabbat Service and Dinner of the 

year on October 26, with 130 young parents and 

children attending. Rabbi Micah Peltz engaged 

the children with interactive storytelling, prayers 

and songs, facing what was probably his toughest 

crowd yet at TBS! He won the children over 

easily, and kept (most) of their attention 

throughout the service. 

Following a tasty meal of chicken fingers and 

assorted adult foods, there was a wonderful 

performance by magician Ken Norwood, who 

wowed the kids with amazing tricks while the 

adults enjoyed the rest of their meal. Special 

thanks to Anat Cohen for helping to plan this 

very successful event. The next Family Shabbat 

Service and Dinner is May 2. 

On December 5 at 6:00 pm, the Young 

Members Group will be celebrating Hanukkah 

with a party and concert featuring Jewish rock 

artist Sheldon Low. Contact me for more

Lewis that it was time to wrap up the service. Of 

course, back in Haddon Heights, the church bells 

ringing at noon could be heard by all of us! 

At that point in the conversation, I said that in 

many ways Maurice is still present at TBS since 

when I daven Shacharit on Rosh Hashanah and 

Yom Kippur, many of the melodies and nusach I 

use are the ones I learned from him. Of course, that 

made him feel great. You see, when I was growing 

up at TBS, I walked to shul early on the High Holy 

Days, and enjoyed davening with him. Over the 

years, the melodies became a part of me. 

Maurice asked that I give his regards to everyone 

at TBS; so by way of this article, I am fulfilling that 

request. 

Shortly after wishing him well and hanging up, 

the thought struck me that just as I have absorbed 

some of the melodies that Maurice used, so, too, all 

of us are sponges for the tunes and melodies we 

hear in synagogue. The traditional songs become a 

part of us, and we, hopefully, pass them on to the 

next generation. Beyond just the melodies, the 

rituals and the actions we perform are also part of 

our legacy to our children and grandchildren. In the 

article I wrote for this year’s High Holy Day issue, 

I had discussed the special blessing for children 

recited by parents on Erev Yom Kippur, and in that 

article, I described the feeling I have doing 

something for my children that had been done the 

same way by my father for me. So in this new year, 

we all must try to be role models, for we never 

know who is paying attention to our deeds and 

words, and how they may in turn transmit those to 

others.

MAR Man of the Year 

Temple Beth Sholom is proud to honor its 

MAR Man of the Year—Immediate Past 

President Marc Cohen. Marc was treasurer and 

vice president for 2003-2005, and was president 

from 2005-2007. The TBS Men’s Club grew by 

leaps and bounds under Marc’s reign. We grew in 

membership and our programs helped enrich TBS 

in many areas of Jewish content, Keruv and 

is etched in my mind. It may 

have been over 30 years ago, but 

I can still remember the dinner 

our host family made, the visit to 

the high school in Lancaster, and, 

of course, the bus ride back and 

forth. I guess as parents we strive 

to create more opportunities for 

our children compared to what 

we had. No one can argue that 

Israel will be more memorable 

than our trip to Lancaster.

around the world, including an AIPAC Conference 

which was the biggest attraction at a Men’s Club 

breakfast in years. This past summer, TBS was 

honored nationally at the FJMC Conference for the 

work Marc has done with Men’s Club. We received 

the Quality Club Award and a Torch Award. 

Marc will be honored at a dinner at Beth Sholom 

in Elkins Park on Sunday, December 2.

A TBS member and his family stayed at a Marriott Resort recently, 

and paid for it with SCRIP cards, and TBS earned $900! 

When several other members took their families to Disney World and 

paid for their trips with SCRIP cards, TBS also earned a profit. 

A few members going to the movies earned $27 for us. Some amounts 

may seem small, but when we add them up, TBS has the potential to earn 

big dividends while you are out having fun!

During our visit to Arad, our twin town in Israel, 

we visited an Ethiopian woman who leads a special 

club for Ethiopian immigrants. Arad is one of the 

towns in Israel that absorbed many of these 

immigrants. In order to help the women integrate 

better in the society and become involved with their 

children’s education, they’ve created a way for them 

to come together in the school and do what they like 

most—embroidery and basket-making. While in 

school, they meet people and exchange ideas. 

I brought home some of the items they made so 

that we can sell them at TBS. They’ll be on display 

near the gift shop during December, with proceeds 

from their sale going toward the purchase of more 

materials so they can continue to work on their 

crafts. Let’s show our support to our friends in Arad!
