Senior Chaverim
April is the month that we
memorialize the Holocaust. We
will show the award winning
film “Secret Lives” at our next
meeting. It tells the emotional
stories of the lives of a small
number of children who were
saved from the 1.5 million
Jewish children who were living
in Europe at that time. It also
tells of the men and women who
showed kindness and decency to
save them, risking their own lives
in the process.
Join us on April 25, 2006 at
12:30 pm for fancy desserts and
“Secret Lives.”
May your Seder table be filled
with good food, happy and
healthy family and friends.
Happy Passover,
Musical Program for the Elderly
A suggestion has been made by congregant
Jodi Feldman to form a group of children who
would like to play their musical instruments for
the elderly at the Federation Apartments or the
Jewish Geriatric Home on a regular basis. The
residents would be thrilled, and the children
would be able to showcase their talent. Great
idea! If you and your children are interested,
please call Jodi at 856-797-5380.
ACH Has Come to TBS!
But what is ACH?
ACH stands for Automated Clearing
House, and it’s how financial transactions
are moved electronically and
automatically. When you sign up for direct
payment to Temple Beth Sholom, each of
your membership dues payments come by
ACH and is automatically paid on the
predetermined monthly date you choose.
So, after your 50% dues deposit, you
no longer have to pay your balance by
check or credit card. You can have
payments made directly from your bank
account.
TBS and Commerce Bank have put into
place a safe and secure system to pay
your dues, while at the same time
reducing costs for the synagogue.
Do you need to change your bank
account? No. Although TBS banks with
Commerce, the funds are taken directly
from your account, no matter which
institution you bank with. Maybe you’re
already paying your mortgage or utility
bills via ACH.
ACH costs you nothing while helping
TBS realize cost savings by reducing
credit card charges and postage costs,
and by improving our overall cash flow.
Want to sign up? Call Jerry Ackerman at
the synagogue office at 751-6663.
L’Zecher Olam: For an
“A single landmark of justice and honor does
not make a world of peace.”
Former U.S. Secretary of War Henry Stimson,
January 1947
The United States Congress established the
Days of Remembrance as our nation’s annual
commemoration of the victims of the Holocaust
and created the United States Holocaust Memorial
Museum as a permanent living memorial to those
victims.
This year, the Days of Remembrance fall
between Sunday, April 23, and Sunday, April 30,
2006, with Holocaust Remembrance Day
observed on April 25. The United States
Holocaust Memorial Museum’s theme for this
year’s commemoration is “Legacies of Justice,” in
honor of the courage of, and the precedents set by,
those who testified during the trials of Nazi war
criminals. The Museum notes that the theme also
“pays tribute to those who tirelessly work for the
cause of justice, both then and now. Today, more
than ever before, individual and communal
willingness to seek justice after the Holocaust
serves as a powerful example of how our nation
can—and must—respond to unprecedented
crimes. We must vigorously pursue justice for the
victims of such acts of hatred and inhumanity, not
only for their sake but for the sake of present and
future generations.” BeST III & IV students are
going to the National Holocaust Memorial
Museum in Washington, DC, on Sunday, April
On Tuesday, April 25, the BeST III students
will see “Lida Stein and the Righteous Gentile” at
the Katz JCC. This play highlights ‘ordinary’
people from ‘ordinary’ families caught up in the
extraordinary political and social upheaval of the
Nazi era. The play probes these issues from the
perspective of teenagers, both Jewish and non-
Jewish, who are swept up in life-altering decisions
about friendship, politics, and family loyalty in
extraordinary times.
The search for justice requires more than
punishment of the guilty. We honor the memory
of those who suffered and perished during the
Holocaust by working towards a world of justice
and peace. Drawing attention to the voices of
victims of oppression and genocide, whether they
be Holocaust survivors or those fleeing the
genocide taking place today in Darfur, Sudan, is
one of the chief legacies of the justice sought at
Nuremberg. Commit to attending the Save Darfur
Rally to Stop Genocide in Washington, DC on
Usually, my article for the month of Nissan
would tell you how our children are starting to
prepare for Pesach. They are involved in hands-on
activities learning about the holiday and are very
excited about being active participants in their
upcoming family Seders. Kindergarten and
Kindergarten Enrichment will organize and
conduct a special Seder for parents.
I also usually would tell you that their favorite
song at this time of year speaks about frogs
jumping everywhere. Lately, it is not only frogs
jumping but our children jumping from one
activity to another; learning, growing and having
fun! Here are just a few things that have been
going on in the preschool this past month:
The Fours continue to take daily power
walks to raise money for the Juvenile
Diabetes Research Foundation. A
former TBS preschooler is scheduled to
speak to the children about Juvenile
Diabetes.
Animal Welfare Association’s Pet
Therapy Dog Flower visited our Twos.
With Tzedakah they collected, they
adopted a dog from the shelter in
Voorhees and will sponsor a drive to
donate badly needed supplies.
During Purim, the children decorated
and filled bags of snacks and sent
Shaloch Manot to the children at the
Weissman Pediatric Rehabilitation
Center.
This past month, “Cinderella” was a big
hit with the preschoolers. The Fours
attended a performance by the
American Theater for Performing Arts at
the Voorhees Community Center and
the Threes attended a unique rendition
of this classic fairy tale at the Ritz
Theater in Oaklyn, NJ.
created drawings in the classroom that
can be printed onto mugs, stationery
time for Mother’s Day!
And finally, through the hard work and
generosity of the HSA and our parents,
a new playhouse has been purchased
for the outside playground. The children
will be able to enjoy it this spring!
Parashah Previews
Comments for conversation on the weekly Torah Portions, from Etz Hayim,
the Conservative Movement Humash.
Parshat Vayikra—Leviticus 1:1-5:26
Shabbat, April 1, 2006—3 Nissan 5766
These chapters describe the basic kinds of sacrifices
and list the several classes of offerings to be presented to
God in the sanctuary. Chapters 1-5, addressed to individual
Israelites and their leaders, recount what may be offered—
including animals, birds, and grain. They establish the
proper procedures for presenting the various sacrifices, a
function performed primarily by priests but that
occasionally required the participation of those who
brought the sacrifices.
Leviticus is a difficult book for a modern person to read
with reverence and appreciation. Its main subject matter—
animal offerings and ritual impurity—seems remote from
contemporary concerns. Yet almost half of the 613 mitzvot
of the Torah are found in this book, the text with which
young children traditionally began their Jewish education.
Our concern in reading Leviticus should be more than
historical (“this is what our ancestors used to believe and
practice”). It should be an effort to understand the religious
needs that were met by these practices in ancient times,
needs that we still confront today, and the religious ideas
that were taught in the process.
“The Lord called to Moses and spoke to him from the
Tent of Meeting.” (Leviticus 1:1)
Parshat Tzav—Leviticus 6:1-8:36
Shabbat, April 8, 2006—10 Nissan 5766
The rituals for each of the various sacrifices outlined in
chapters 1-5 are presented in chapters 6 and 7. These
chapters also offer us a unique glimpse into the
participation of the priesthood in the sacred meals within
the precincts of the sanctuary.
The important Hebrew word torah, which appears in
these chapters, derives from the verb “to cast, shoot”—an
arrow, for instance. The verb, in one of its forms means “to
aim, direct toward”—hence “to show the way, instruct.”
The word torah here is limited to the content of the
instruction.
“This is the Torah of the Sacrifice of Wellbeing that one
may offer to the Lord.” (Leviticus 7:11)
Parshat Sh’mini—Leviticus 9:1-11:47
Shabbat, April 22, 2006—24 Nissan 5766
This parashah begins by recalling a tragic incident that
marred the installation ceremony of Aaron and his sons as
kohanim. The focus of the text then shifts to the second of
the major concerns of Leviticus, the avoidance of ritual
impurity (tum-ah), which would separate the Israelite from
contact with God and God’s sanctuary.
The basis for one major pillar of the Jewish dietary
April 2006 . NISSAN/IYAR 5766 . Page 12
code, the separation of meat and dairy products, is
enunciated in Exodus 34:26. Now the Torah adds a
second pillar, the distinction between the living creatures
that may be eaten and those that are forbidden.
An attentive reading of this chapter clearly shows that
the dietary laws are not based on considerations of health,
neither in terms of the animals permitted or forbidden nor
out of concern for meat spoiling in the desert heat.
“These are the creatures you may eat…”
(Leviticus 11:2)
Parshat Tazri-a-M’tzora—Leviticus 14:1-15:33
Shabbat, April 29, 2006—1 Iyar 5766
This double parashah focuses on rituals of
purification. It begins with the offerings brought after the
birth of a child. The remainder describes the ritual of
purifying and reintegrating the recovered leper. We can
read it as a description of the Israelites’ attitude to the
experience of recovering from illness.
The formal description of the cleansing ritual masks
the deep and possibly conflicted feelings of the person
who has recovered from a serious illness. These might
include feelings of relief and happiness together with a
new appreciation of good health, perhaps resentment over
what he had been going through as well as envy of people
who had remained healthy. The offering of the recovered
leper is sometimes referred to as “the sacrifice of one who
has returned from the dead,” either because the illness
was so grave or because a life cut off from all human
contact, a life without friends and family, was not really a
life.
“This shall be the ritual for a leper at the time he is to
be purified.” (Leviticus 14:2)
Parshat Aharei Mot-K’doshim—Leviticus 16:1-20:27
Shabbat, May 6, 2006—8 Iyar 5766
Aharei Mot presents the rituals for Yom Kippur and
then goes on to discuss prohibited sexual relations. Ritual
and ethical purity are the concerns of this double portion
of Torah. K’doshim begins with the words “you shall be
holy” (k’doshim tihyu). What is holiness? The term can be
applied to God, to good people, to a book, to a period of
time, or to an animal offered as a sacrifice. To be holy is
to be different, to be set apart from the ordinary.
“Ordinary” (hol) is often used as the opposite of “holy” in
rabbinic discourse. To be holy is to rise to partake in
some measure of the special qualities of God, the source
of holiness. Holiness is the highest level of human
behavior, human beings at their most Godlike.
“Then he shall come out and offer his burnt offering,
and the burnt offering of the people.” (Leviticus 16:24)

Who uses the library?
Who walks through that open door?
Everyone in the congregation can, and many
do, for all sorts of reasons.
Steve came in for travel guides for his first trip
to Israel and has stayed on as an avid film patron.
Paula came in and borrowed 25 age-appropriate
books on the immigrant experience in the U.S. for
her Hebrew High class. A preschool parent came
in for a book to read to help her child after a death
in her family. Rachel came in for audio books to
listen to on a car trip with her husband. Preschool
teachers come in regularly for books to augment
both their classroom libraries and to find books to
enrich their lessons. Members of the Nextbook
Book Group at the public library come in for
copies of the books they are reading. Mara is
making her first Seder and has been methodically
going through most of the cookbook collection to
carefully plan her meal (it’s going to be a good
one!). Marlene comes in to do her Hebrew
homework for Dina’s Hebrew class.
Then there are the fearless readers—the ones
for whom English is not their native language.
Mitzvah Day
Library News
The Open Door
Mitzvah Day is Sunday, May 7. Enclosed in this issue of
making blankets for needy families. There will also be a Walk-a-
Thon supporting Multiple Sclerosis, leaving at 9:00 am from
Eastern High School in Voorhees. We will be walking with team
“Emunah.”
For more information and to register for the walk, contact Dina
April 2006 . NISSAN/IYAR 5766 . Page 13
Kids from both public school and Kellman
Academy come in for research materials for
school projects. Entire families come in together
on Sunday mornings and everyone takes out
something to read. The kids come in with their
Hebrew School teachers to hear stories and take
out books (publishing of Jewish children’s books
has exploded). The biography readers come, and
the mothers and daughters who are planning
weddings come. So do the Bar and Bat Mitzvah
parents planning their simchas. The serious
readers on Judaism and Israel come, as do the
littlest patrons—the preschool classes who come
in every week for Story Time and then come back
after school with their parents to take home a
book to snuggle with, or chew on in the case of
the board books. Even the Rabbi comes in to use
the Encyclopedia Judaica. And last, but not least,
the fiction readers who read everything from
Jewish romance novels (yep, we have them) to
literary fiction and everything in between. They
all come.
So many books.
So little time.
So come on in through the open library door
and find something to take home and enjoy. I look
forward to seeing you!
Chag Sameach to all.
USY
Spring has sprung and our year in USY is quickly coming to an end,
but not before we partake of some awesome events!
April brings the annual Hagesher Region Spring Convention. The
busses will be loading on April 7 (sorry parents, but your teenager
won’t be around to help you clean for Pesach!) and will be heading
for Claymont, Delaware, for what is always a weekend filled with
friends that is sure to result in lots of wonderful memories.
Be sure to join us in synagogue on April 14, the second day of
Passover, as Mizrach USY leads services in the main sanctuary. This
is always a special service that makes us very proud of our USYers.
On April 23, we will be holding our Spring Car Wash in the TBS
parking lot. Parents, make sure you stop over after dropping the kids
off at Hebrew School for a sparkling clean car. Suggested donation is
$5.00, with all proceeds benefiting SATO.
April 26 brings the highly anticipated Election Informational
meeting. Those interested in running for an executive board position
should attend with a parent, to find out what positions are open for
next year’s board, and what the responsibilities include. Applications
will be handed out at this meeting. This culminates with elections on
May 8 at the home of Adam Waxman. Join us for dinner at 5:00 pm.
Elections will follow immediately at 6:00 pm. If you are running, be
sure to bring all of your TBS USY friends to the Waxman’s to cast
their votes. Please note that only paid TBS USY members may vote.
Be sure to mark your calendars for April 30 as we head to the
Riversharks game for our closing event. Cost is $20 which includes
field level seating and transportation to and from the game. Paid
RSVPs are required and must be in at the TBS main office by April
10. Don’t miss the opening weekend of the Riversharks season and
the chance to share it with your USY friends.
And finally, be sure to come along with us on Mitzvah Day, May
7, as USY once again leads the 15-mile bike tour. To register, or for
more information on the ride, contact Rabbi Levenson.
As you can see, it is a full calendar of events for Mizrach for the
month of April. Don’t miss out on these wonderful activities. Please
feel free to contact me with any questions you have.
HOW IS THIS YEAR DIFFERENT FROM ALL OTHER YEARS?
5766 Special Passover Pullout Section /Page 6
?ohbav kfn ,tzv vbav v,b,ab vn
IN ALL OTHER YEARS…
We learn Hebrew. We learn about Jewish history and tradition. We celebrate the Jewish holidays and we perform
mitzvoth.
THIS YEAR…
///,tzv vbac
We recognize the significance of being involved in Jewish education by identifying magical moments we have and
have had in Jewish education.
IN ALL OTHER YEARS…
///ohbav kfca
We have opened our doors and included children with special needs in our program. We provide parents with many
option for their children’s education and under the guidance of Shayna Sukoneck, we provide advocates to the students
and guidance to the teachers in the classrooms.
THIS YEAR…
///,tzv vbac
We invited Andrea Feigenbaum to help us in making better connections between our students with special needs and
the students in the classroom. We also reached out to the community and invited Josh Goldstein (who has cerebral palsy)
to join his friend Sarah to be part of our school family.
IN ALL OTHER YEARS…
///ohbav kfca
We perform many Mitzvot. We raise tzedakah to assist various organizations and causes.
THIS YEAR…
///,tzv vbac
We continue our acts of loving kindness. We raised throughout the school over $1,400 for the
Israeli Red Cross—Magen David Adom. We hosted a party for 17 Israeli children who have cancer and who visited our
community. Many generous people and families contributed for this event. Our Dalet and high school students will be
participating in the MS Walk to support research in that field and boost the morale of a 15 year old boy in the
community who is waiting for a cure for the disease.
IN ALL OTHER YEARS…
///ohbav kfca
We connect with Israel through studies and joint activities.
THIS YEAR…
///,tzv vbac
Before I left for Israel in January, I asked the children to write me a letter that I could take with me and read while I
was there. They could ask me questions and tell me about things they would like me to observe. I arrived in Israel with
almost 300 letters. I read all of them and replied to each and every one of them. I was pleased to discover the level of
knowledge our children have about Israel! I recognized some remarks about the places that the teachers visited last year.
Upon my return, I visited the classes to deliver the letters and spent time with the children telling them about today’s
Israel and my experience.
Pesach is known to be the holiday of questions. In Israel, we tell a person who asks too many questions: “Wait until
Pesach and then you could ask all you want!”
Pesach is also the first holiday, according to the biblical calendar. So, in this regard, it is also good to look back and
ask ourselves about how different our year was and will be. The word vba –year—means in Hebrew “CHANGE” and
also “REPEAT.”
As we place Elijah's cup on the table, symbolizing the future messianic redemption; and as we add Miriam’s cup of
water, symbolizing hope and renewal in present time, we could think and ask ourselves about the “change” and “repeats”
in our lives.
The TBS staff and faculty join me in wishing you...
A story:
Food Insecurity
When the Israeli actor, Ezra Dagan,
was chosen to play the rabbi in the
Holocaust movie “Schindler’s List,” he
went to visit a friend whose father was a
survivor. Ezra wanted to get the personal
feel of the Jews who had lived through
Auschwitz. Arriving just as his friend’s
father sat down to eat, Ezra marveled at
the rapid pace at which he consumed
everything on his plate. “Does your father
always eat at so frenzied a rate?” he
inquired. “I never noticed it but you are
right. It must be a life saving lesson he
never unlearned from his years in Nazi
forced labor camps.” (A Different Night:
The Family Participation Haggadah).
The impact of food insecurity can last a lifetime.
The term is new, but the problem has been around
for a long time. It is “the uncertain ability to
acquire adequate and appropriate foods in socially
acceptable ways on a continuous basis.” And it
doesn’t only happen in environments of oppression.
It is usually a consequence of poverty. When a
family has enough food the week after payday, but
not the week before the next payday, that’s food
insecurity. When parents eat less than they need so
children can have a bit more, that’s food insecurity.
When people have to turn to food pantries at social
service agencies and food banks to get them through
the month, that’s food insecurity.
Food insecurity is the first thing we address at the
Seder. We hold up the Matza and recite Ha Lahma
Anya—“This is the bread of poverty and persecution
which our ancestors ate in the land of Egypt. Let all
who are hungry, come and eat. Let all who are in
need come and share the Pesach meal.” But, of
course, nobody comes. It’s a symbol, and symbols
only have meaning if we act on them.
Mazon gives meaning to our words.
Mazon provides grants to food banks around the
United States, where, according to the USDA, 11.9%
of the population suffers from food insecurity.
A Song for the Seder Table from The Hazzan
AVADEEM HAYEENU
Once We Were Slaves, Now We Are Free People
Chords: H. Dardashti Traditional
Any chometz owned by a Jew during the week
of Passover is forbidden for actual use forever. If,
therefore, one cannot dispose of all chometz before
Passover, he must arrange for a formal mechiras
chometz or sale of that chometz to a non-Jew.
Check with your Jewish grocer and baker to
ascertain that he has sold his chometz.
All chometz in your possession should be
collected and locked in a spare room, closet or
trunk. All chometz dishes and utensils should also
be placed in a special room or closet until after
Pesach, after having been thoroughly scoured and
cleansed.
You should then see the Rabbi personally to
authorize a bill of sale. If that is not possible, simply
mail this form to the Rabbi before Wednesday,
April 12. It is customary to make a donation for
tzedakah as part of this transaction.
Rabbi Lindemann (continued from page 1 of this Special Passover Section)
Lately, Mazon has had to increase its profile in
Israel because of food insecurity there. In Hebrew, it is
called I-Bitahon Tzonati. Here’s what it means:
22% of Israeli citizens—
approximately 1,100,000 people—
are food insecure.
Of those Israeli citizens who are
food insecure, 60% are Jewish,
20% are Arabs and 20% are new
immigrants.
According to the National
Insurance Institute, nearly 30% of
Israeli children—approximately
690,000—live below the national
poverty line. ($937.50/month for a
household of two adults and two
children)
So this year, give meaning to the opening words of
the Seder. When you hold up the Matza in one hand,
hold up the enclosed Mazon envelope in the other.
Then use both to fight food insecurity.
Hag Kasher V’Sameyah—Have a good and
meaningful Passover,
