Scholarship Scholarship Criteria

A & S GENERAL SCHOLARSHIPS

Don and Lucille Armacost Fulltime undergraduate student seeking a degree in any major within the College of Arts and Sciences.

Scholarship Students must demonstrate financial need based on the FAFSA, which will be determined by the Office of

Financial Aid and Scholarships.*

Thomas D. Barr Liberal Arts Fulltime undergraduate student seeking a degree in any major in the College of Arts & Sciences.

Scholarship

Leodis & June Davis Minority Minority students majoring in any department within A&S and demonstrating financial need.* Missouri

Scholarship residents with preference given to Kansas City area metropolitan students and students majoring in Chemistry

or Physics.

Donna Edell Scholarship Fulltime undergraduate student who demonstrates academic merit, and is majoring in Chemistry, Geosciences,

or Physics.

A&S Family Fund Scholarship Open to children of the College of Arts & Science faculty & staff, who are attending classes in the College at

UMKC.

Leo Long/Hispanic Chamber Fulltime undergraduate Missouri resident who demonstrates financial need.* Priority will be given

of Commerce Scholarship to Hispanic Chamber of Commerce members or their families and to upperclassmen with a goal of seeking a

career in the for-profit or not-for-profit business sector. Please contact Liz Barton for application packet &

requirements.

Greg & Gaebelle Hulme Undergraduate student, ages 25-50, hiatus of 5 years since returning to college. Additional one page essay on

Scholarship how receiving a degree will shape your future and professional life required. Minimum GPA 2.0, all majors

qualify.

Richard McKinzie Memorial Fulltime undergraduate student seeking a degree in any major in the College of Arts and Sciences.

Scholarship Preference given to non-traditional students who are above the age of 23 and who are returning to college to

finish their degree.

Randall L. Miller Scholarship Fulltime undergraduate Political Science, Philosophy, Economics or History majors. A Missouri resident who

demonstrates financial need.*

Missouri Waste Control Coalition To qualify, students must be a Missouri resident majoring in the College of Arts and Sciences at UMKC. If you

Scholarship would like to be considered for this scholarship, please submit an additional one page essay relaying your

involvement in, and study of environmental issues.

Pizza 51 Scholarship Undergraduate student majoring in the College of Arts and Sciences with a minimum UMKC GPA of a 3.0 or

higher, and demonstrates financial need.* Student must submit an additional one page essay on what common

sense means to them.

Norman Royall, Jr. Award $500 book award for a Chemistry, Physics, or Geosciences major.

Linda and Thomas Talbott Undergraduate student(s) leader who is enrolled in their junior or senior year in the College of Arts and

Scholarship & Leadership Award Sciences and is majoring in either English Language and Literature or Economics. Student(s) needs to be a

graduate of a Kansas City area metropolitan public or private high school, and have a superior GPA. Also needs

to demonstrate student leadership within UMKC’s campus activities and/or community service. The scholarship

is renewable.

Frank Neal Willis, Jr. Minority Open to a new freshman or transfer student in the College of Arts & Sciences who is African American,

Scholarship Hispanic, or Native American. Must have a 3.0 college GPA or 2.75 high school GPA, and must demonstrate

financial need.*

Paseo High School Reunion To fund scholarships for graduates of Paseo High School that are currently attending and degree seeking in the

Scholarship College of Arts & Sciences at UMKC.

CFM Sustainability Scholarship Fulltime undergraduate student who is seeking a degree in any major in the College of Arts & Sciences at

UMKC. Preference shall be given to students in good academic standing, who demonstrate financial need, are

graduates of a Kansas City metropolitan area high school and have an academic or volunteer focus on

sustainability issues and efforts.*

Cheryl A. Smith Scholarship For students who have declared a major in the Department of Sociology in the College of Arts and Sciences at

for Gerontology UMKC with a focus in gerontology. Please submit an additional one page essay supporting your involvement in

the field of gerontology.

ARCHITECTURE, URBAN PLANNING & DESIGN

CFM AUPD Scholarship Fulltime undergraduate student who is a Kansas City area high school graduate studying Architecture or Urban

Planning & Design in the College of Arts & Sciences at UMKC. Also must demonstrate financial need.*

ART & ART HISTORY

Advertising Artists Guild Grant Fulltime Art major who demonstrates financial need.* Preference given to junior, senior or graduate student in

Studio Art. Applicants must also submit a digital CD portfolio of 15 images showing recent artwork. Digital

images should be sent in jpeg format. Video or animation projects can be included as a self-contained

QuickTime movie. Students must also submit a numbered image list that refers to each digital image submitted,

listing: title, medium, size & year for each piece.

George Ehrlich Scholarship To provide scholarship for undergraduate and graduate student majoring in Art History in the College of Arts

and Sciences at UMKC. Please submit what you consider to be your best art history paper, preferably 10 pages

or less (but it may be longer, up to 15 pages, plus images).

Geraldine E. Fowle Scholarship To provide scholarship for undergraduate and graduate student majoring in Art History in the College of Arts

and Sciences at UMKC. Please submit what you consider to be your best art history paper, preferably 10 pages

or less (but it may be longer, up to 15 pages, plus images).

John Gutowski Scholarship Open to Art & Art History majors. Applicants should include a letter detailing how they plan to use the award

money (help pay for tuition or help buy art supplies, etc.) if he or she is the chosen recipient. Applicants must

Communication Studies

Fred G. Andrews Jubilee Creative Undergraduate or graduate students majoring in Communication Studies with an emphasis in Film and Media

Cinema Fund Arts.

Alex & Josephine Coleman Undergraduate student(s) with a declared major in Communication Studies with a 3.3 UMKC cumulative GPA.

Scholarship Must have at least 60 credit hours completed by the end of the spring semester to be eligible.

Carol Koehler Memorial Scholarship Communication Studies major who is a junior or senior with a minimum UMKC GPA of 3.0, and who has

for Internships completed at least 12 hours in Communication Studies at UMKC. Also, the student is required to enroll in the

department’s three-hour internship course in the upcoming academic year.

G. Tom Poe Scholarship Fund for Undergraduate students who have declared a major in Communication Studies with an emphasis in Film and

Outstanding Achievement in Media Arts or a minor in Film Studies. Preference shall be given to a senior level student who maintain a 3.0

Film and Media Arts GPA.

Michelle LaPointe Scholarship To provide scholarships to non-traditional students who are majoring in Communication Studies in the College

of Arts and Sciences and who have completed a minimum of 24 hours of coursework at UMKC. Must

demonstrate financial need.*

Suzanne Crispin Williams Scholarship Undergraduate student in Communication or Women’s Studies. Preference to female or returning students

pursing first undergraduate degree. Applicant must also submit an essay of approximately 1,000 words on

background and how scholarship will impact future plans.

John Scott Shepherd Scholarship Undergraduate students who have declared a major in Communication Studies with an emphasis in Film and

Media Arts.

CHEMISTRY

Mr. & Mrs. Fong Wu Cheng New or continuing graduate student (excludes non-thesis MS) in Chemistry who demonstrates potential in

Scholarship chemical research. Applicant must also submit a letter of nomination from a member of the Chemistry faculty, a

complete set of transcripts, student’s CV, and any other supporting documents, such as publications.

Clemens Scholarship for Fulltime undergraduate student(s) who have declared a major in the Department of Chemistry at UMKC.

Undergraduate Chemistry majors Preference given to a female student with a minimum UMKC cumulative GPA of 3.0.

K. L. Cheng Undergraduate Undergraduate student in Chemistry who demonstrates outstanding academic achievement.

Scholarship in Chemistry

Dr. Yanching & Mrs. Sandy Undergraduate student who is pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry at UMKC.

Jean New Scholarship

Dr. & Mrs. Jean New Graduate student in Chemistry who demonstrates outstanding academic achievement.

Scholarship in Chemistry

James & Neoma Kilway Fulltime undergraduate student who is majoring in Chemistry. Preference given to student

Scholarship in Chemistry recipients who have a minimum GPA of 3.0 and demonstrate financial need.*

CRIMINAL JUSTICE & CRIMINOLOGY

Alvin Brooks Scholarship Fulltime undergraduate student majoring in Criminal Justice & Criminology, who is in good academic standing

with a minimum GPA of 2.0. Preference given to students who are first generation college students, who

graduated from an accredited Kansas City, Missouri high school or transferred from a Kansas City area

community college. The student must demonstrate financial need.*

ECONOMICS

Joe E. Brown Institutional Excellence in Institutional Economics.

Economics Award

James C. Crew Scholarship Fulltime undergraduate student majoring in Economics. Preference will be given to students who are majoring

in Economics and also have declared a minor in Mathematics and/or Statistics or have an interest in

econometric or social discount rate.

Gene Wagner Honorary Scholarship Fulltime undergraduate or graduate students in the Department of Economics in the College of Arts & Sciences.

in Labor Economics Preference will be given to a student who is studying labor economics and has a family background of support

or involvement in organized labor.

Robert Greene Scholarship Fulltime junior or senior majoring in Economics who demonstrates financial need, and exhibits evidence of

scholarship, leadership and desire to succeed. Scholarship is renewable.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE & LITERATURE

Jo Anna Dale English Scholarship Undergrad students majoring in English.

Diversity in English Scholarship Undergraduate students majoring in English, who are focusing on literary study. Preference given to students

from metro area.

Robert & Sylvia Farnsworth Graduate student in English demonstrating an academic focus on post-colonial studies.

Denis Ward Scholarship Outstanding student in Geosciences.

Geosciences Scholarship Undergraduate student majoring in Geosciences.

Truman P. Stauffer Undergraduate students majoring in Geosciences, preference given to those students focusing in Geology.

Dr. Richard J. Gentile Scholarship Open to students who have completed at least one year at UMKC and 24 credit hours with a GPA of a 3.0 or

higher. Additionally, student must be working on term papers or other work with stratigraphy and geologic field

mapping.

GEOSCIENCES

Truman P. Stauffer Undergraduate students majoring in Geosciences, preference given to those students focusing in Geology.

Lee A. Takats Scholarship Undergraduate students majoring in History.

Jim Falls Honorary Scholarship Undergraduate students who have declared a major in History, have a minimum UMKC GPA of a 3.0, and also

demonstrate financial need.*

PHYSICS

Paul J. & Martha A. Bryant Physics To provide scholarships to undergraduate or graduate students in the College of Arts and Sciences who major

Scholarship in Physics.

K. F. Cheng Physics Physics majors who demonstrate financial need.* Applicant must also submit a cover letter,

Scholarship transcript and one letter of reference.

K. L. Cheng Undergraduate Undergraduate Physics majors. Applicant must also submit a cover letter, transcript and one letter of reference.

Scholarship in Physics

Dr. K.L. Cheng Memorial Scholarship Undergraduate and graduate Physics majors.

Wai-Yim Ching & Mon Yin Lung To provide scholarships to undergraduate students in the College of Arts and Sciences who major in Physics.

Scholarship in Physics Preference shall be given to a junior or senior level student who maintains a 3.2 GPA.

Lester Touby Kurtz Undergraduate and graduate Physics majors. Applicant must also submit a cover letter, transcript, and

Scholarship in Physics one letter of reference.

James M. Phillips Undergraduate and graduate Physics major. Applicant must also submit a cover letter, transcript, and

Scholarship in Physics one letter of reference.

POLITICAL SCIENCE

Dan Bishop Scholarship Graduate student interested in completing an internship in grass roots or the public policy arena.

in Public Policy

The David N. Atkinson Scholarship Undergraduate student majoring in Political Science. Preference shall be given to students who will be

Political Science Fund either a junior or senior in the current academic year.

Ruth L. Gant Memorial Scholarship Talented senior(s) pursuing a career in politics or government.

Sallie Millard & Cornelius Roach, Sr. A senior who demonstrates high academic achievement in the field of political science or government.

THEATRE

Lee & Nadine Marts Scholarship Theatre majors.

William & Fay Sollner Scholarship Graduate students in the Department of Theatre. Minimum GPA of 3.0. Preference, but not restricted to,

students who graduate from Pittsburg State University or are from the southeast corner of Kansas.
