November Newsletter 2011 - Camas School District

As we near

this

time

of

Thanksgiving,

I am reminded of

how much we have to be

thankful for here at Lacamas;

our freedom, our

veterans, our families and

our 450 Lacamas Leopards.

We are thankful for our

wonderful volunteers that

help out in so many ways

and our PALS organization.

We are fortunate to

live in a community where

we enjoy the support of

our parents, business and

other community members.

It is with your support

that we are able to

accomplish the wonderful

things that happen here at

Lacamas.

Thanks for sharing your

children with us!

Have a Happy Thanksgiving

Mrs. Strohmaier

All School Read Update…

We hope you enjoyed participating in our all school

read this year. As the teacher-librarian it is very rewarding

to observe the different grade level reactions

and comments to the book. When the students see or

hear something about Poppy or last year’s book, The

Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane there is this

energy of having something in common with their

classmates. Both books gave our readers rich vocabulary

and an experience with good writing. We appreciate

the feedback we received from families regarding

this special event. Many of you are enjoying and

using the web links as teachable moments on the food

chain that were sent home in your packet. The other

books in The Tales of Dimwood Forest series are not

staying on our shelves. If your family is interested in

one of these titles; your child should come into the

library and I will show them how to place a hold.

Your books were a gift from Lacamas; however, we

will gladly take books back to use in literature studies

in the classrooms. If you decide you’d like to donate

your Poppy book back to Lacamas, please just return

it to your child’s teacher. Mrs. Crouch

Our Lacamas students are continuing to enjoy award winning literature. The K -2 leopards are previewing

the Washington Children Choice Picture Book nominees for 2011. Our 3 rd grade leopards went on a scavenger

hunt over the continents using a set of student atlases. They reviewed the legends and other text features

on a map to find their answers in the hunt. Our 4 th grade leopards using the keyword ‘veteran’ explored

our reference sources: dictionary, thesaurus, atlas, almanac, and encyclopedia. Our 5 th grade leopards

are researching an early explorer. They are making trading cards with their subjects. We are also using

our presentation skills in creating either a newscast (ENN) or a sales pitch for our cards on

“EBay” (Explorers Bay).

Once again we are participating in the Printer Cartridge Recycle Program with Cartridge World. We will

receive money for the cartridges collected from parents, community members and businesses throughout

the school year. Popular cartridges that earn the most funds are Cannon 40 and 41; HP 74 and 75 High

Yield; HP 901 XL black or color; HP 22 or 28 or 57 Tri color; 60XL black or color. These are just some

of the cartridges, we will take all kinds. Thank you for supporting this recycling program for Lacamas

Heights Elementary School.

Thank you for supporting our Fall Bookfair. It was a success. We appreciate all the effort and work that

our volunteers put forth. A big thank you to Sarah Schaffer for chairing this event and all the parents who

volunteered their time!

Marge Crouch

Thank You to PALS

A “Spooktacular” thank you to the parents who worked so hard to organize another successful Harvest Carnival.

Hundreds of children and their parents had a great time with other families in our community. Christy

Buehler chaired the event and did a wonderful job of getting volunteers which

included parents as well as High School students. Thanks again for all you

do!

The PALS fundraiser was a huge success and we would like to thank all of

you who supported the event as well as those parents that organized the

event. Thank you Sarah George and Amy Hanson for all your hard work!

!

Lacamas students were excited to host over 20 veterans, their families, and parents

for the annual Veterans Day Assembly on Wednesday, November 9th. A color

guard from the VFW Post of Camas-Washougal presented the colors. Several student

MC’s explained the significance of the day. Mr. Ainley’s Fourth and Fifth

Grade Choirs sang two Veterans Day songs. He also led the school in some patriotic

songs. We want to thank all who attended and participated in making this a

very special day. A reception followed with cake, punch and coffee in the Lacamas

Library.

PAY FOR LUNCH, VIEW ONLINE OPTIONS

What did my child eat for lunch today? Why is my son/daughter already out

of lunch money? These questions and more can be answered online through

the district’s MealTime program. Parents can see how often their students

eat lunch or breakfast and for secondary students, they can even see what

menu items they chose to eat. Additionally, parents can also deposit money

into their student’s account.

If your student is new to the district or you did not receive passcode information

you can call 360-833-5768 or send an e-mail with your student’s name

and school to lisa.myers@camas.wednet.edu.

On-Line Payments for Lunch Accounts can be made at

www.mymealtime.com . (Transactions after midnight will be posted

to the student’s account the next business day). Through this website

you can also monitor your student’s account balance and

purchases - for FREE.

If you would like to use this feature, please contact Lisa at

lisa.myers@camas.wednet.edu or 833.5768 and she will provide your

student’s passcode to set up an account.

Lacamas Heights has been asked to join the Camas High School project

Stuff the Bus again this year. By participating we are asking for your

help in donating items to those less fortunate this holiday season. Donations of canned and

boxed food items are needed as well as toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant and shampoo. On

Friday, Dec 9 th , the bus will arrive at Lacamas to collect our contribution. The bus will then

be weighed and compared to the weight of the items gathered from the Washougal schools.

After the competition, all items will be donated to C.A.R.O.L. This is an optional activity and

your support is greatly appreciated!

Inclement Weather

As winter weather approaches we think about

school schedule changes. In the event of

school closure or delay, the district will

launch an emergency notification system, titled

Alert Now, which will send a recorded

message via primary phone to every parent in

the district when schools are delayed or cancelled.

You will receive

this call at approximately

6 AM. The information

is also available

through local

news media.
