1. Know your Product:
Streme Digital Signage Framework
Streme Digital Signage is a form of electronic display that shows information, advertising and other
messages.
Streme Digital Signage was designed to run in real time 24X7 reliable environments. Most other products
are based on regular desktop hardware and operating system like Windows XP professional or Red Hat
Linux. Our systems have been known to run for long durations without rebooting.
Using standard industry grade hardware, Streme Managers and Players provide reliable performance.
Streme Benefits over Static Signs:
Digital signs (such as LCD, LED, plasma, or projected images) can be found in public and private
environments, such as retail stores and corporate buildings. The benefits of digital signage over static signs,
in situations where changing signs are preferred over static signs, are that the content can be exchanged
more easily, animations can be shown, and the signs can adapt to the context and audience, even
interactively.
Content is the king
"Content", in the context of digital signage, is the name used to describe anything designed and displayed
on screens. Content can be anything, including text, images, animations, video, audio, and interactivity.
Content is the heart of any digital signage.
Applications:
Digital signage is used for many different purposes and there is no definitive list. However, below are some
of the most common applications of digital signage:
1. Public information – news, weather and local (location specific) information, such as fire exits and
traveler information
2. Internal information - corporate messages, health & safety, news, etc.
3. Advertising – either related to the location the signage is in or just using the audience reach of the
screens for general advertising
4. Brand building – in-store digital signage to promote the brand and build a brand identity
5. Influencing customer behavior – directing customers to different areas, increasing the dwell time on
the store premises
6. Enhancing customer experience – applications include the reduction of perceived wait time in
restaurant waiting areas, bank queues, etc., as well as recipe demonstrations in food stores
7. Enhancing the environment – with interactive screens (in the floor for example ] ) or with dynamic
way finding.
2. Streme Technology Framework
The components of a Streme Digital Signage installation include
• Displays (one or multiple),
• Media Player/s (one per display generally)
• Content Management server (Streme Manager) also called Administrator
• LAN / WAN Internet connectivity
• FTP Server
Fig: Streme Digital Signage Framework
Streme Digital Signage Framework
Sometimes two or more of these components are present in a single device but typically there is a display
screen, a media player, and a content management server that is connected to the media player over a
network. One content management server may support multiple media players and one media player may
support multiple screens. Stand-alone digital signage devices combine all three functions in one device and
no network connection is needed.
Displays
Streme Digital Signage Framework
Digital signage displays may be LCD screens, LED boards, Projection screens or other emerging display
types like interactive surfaces or Organic LED screens (OLEDS), or Kiosks,
Network infrastructure
Whenever the display, media player and content server are located apart there is a need for audio-video
wiring between the display and the media player and between the media player and the content server.
The connection from media player to display is normally a VGA, DVI, HDMI or Component
video connection. Sometimes this signal is distributed over Cat 5 cables using transmitter and
receiver baluns allowing for greater distances between display and player and simplified wiring. The
connection from media player to content server is usually a wired Ethernet connection although some
installations use wireless Wi-Fi networking.
Streme supports a wide range of network options. This includes LANS, WAN, FTP server, Multi-casting,
cellular networks etc.
Connectivity has never been so easy and modular. Whatever be the bandwidth and connectivity, you can be
assured that information (content) will reach from the manager to the player.
Streme Management Server (Alias Streme Manager):
Streme Manager Software is the center point of the Streme Digital Signage.
This helps you design your digital signage’s sitting at one single location the Head office or any location of
your choice where you decide to keep the Manager. To manage any network, a management server is
required. This can be located anywhere; it just needs to be connected to the digital signage network. New
content will be managed and organized here, while the actual content itself is stored and played on the
Player s. Digital signage networks can either be closed (small internal networks) or open to the World Wide
Web, which will determine how the content on the screens is updated.
With Streme Manager you can manage a small office network with just a few screens or a large advertising
network with thousands of screens.
Streme Manager Software installs easily on your desktop and gets the setup done and Streme running in
minutes.
The Manager Software has special interfaces to interact with your business software. For the retail industry,
the company ERP systems can be interfaced to pick up relevant data. We shall take a look at the interfaces
later in the manual.
Designed to be operated by Business managers, Streme managers lets you have complete control over your
signage network.
We have self running demos available on www.streme.tv for users and easy to follow FAQ’s on the
e. Defining Displays & Players
Streme Digital Signage Framework
Let’s see how to create displays and players. First of all let’s get acquainted by what do you mean by the
term “Display”?
What is Display?
Display is also known as Player. Player is thin client machines which will be keep all contents running on
the Plasma or having an IP address.
It will be on the network connected to the manager machine or the FTP server.
Display is the identity which is placed at remote location connected with the Plasma, LCD, and Projector
etc.
How to create a Display?
The foremost question arises now how to create a display?
Given below are the steps to create a display.
• To create a display, the user would be required to fill up the details like “Player Details” and ”
Download Details” as shown below. This will enable display to upload download content from
specific location which is assigned in the “Download Details” form.
• Now fill up the details as follows.
• Level: Will only display the hierarchy like where exactly the display is created.
• Player Name: Give the display name which is to be created, suppose “Display”. Now in future
whatever contents you are going to manage will be dumped in this “Display”.
A) Open Player Details Tab
contents you are going to manage will be stored in this path.
• Delete Expired Content: If kept “Yes” it will delete the data in specified days of time from “Root
Folder Path”. It will count the specified days only after the schedule of the content is over. For e.g. if image
has a schedule till December 20 th , so 30 days after 20 th December this image will be deleted.
B) Open Display Setting Tab:
• Default Template Frequency: The default value is 600 minutes.
• Time of Restart: The player machine will automatically restart at the time specified. This helps in
keeping CPU utilization intact. And can keep your Player machine running. Suppose if Player
machine is continuously ON for 24 x 7 hrs, and then keep Time of Restart in the midnight.
• Active: Recommended “Yes”. If kept “No” your display will be deactivated and it may not display
any content
• Interactive: Recommended “No”, unless & until you are using Kiosk.
Streme Digital Signage Framework
The user is suggested to mention the upload and the download details for the player in the
“Player Details: Display” form.
Let’s consider now how to provide all the details for uploading as well as downloading of the media
contents on the
Player machine.
D) Open Download Details Tab:
What are Download Details?
In Download Details Tab, the user has to fill up the data fields required for downloading the content from
the server machine (Manager Machine or FTP server). The Player machine will keep on checking for
Manager Machine or FTP server for downloading any of the uploaded content.
In Manager Machine, the user will manage the new media content, schedule the display and then would
upload the same. The Player machines which may be at different remote location will download this newly
uploaded content from the FTP server/machines. For this to operate the user has to fill up download details
g. Templates Framework
The fundamental question comes what do you mean by the term “Template”?
Streme Digital Signage Framework
Template is a standard pre-formatted example containing layout and styles used to configure rich media
contents to be displayed through the Streme software. In simple terms, we can say a layout created to play
on display is defined as Template.
How to create the Templates?
Let’s see now how to create template and customize its use as per the user requirements.
User can create multiple templates and schedule it in the manager. Then displays comprising of these
templates are uploaded on the player. These templates run on the Player machine in a loop as per the
schedule provided to them. Say in Template1 images and movies are created, and in Template2 Flash,
Ticker and then Template1 and Template2 will play on Player machine in a loop.
Streme Digital Signage Framework
• Give the templates name as shown in figure above as “Template1” and “Template2”.
• Select the “Template Layout”. If selected 90 or 270 it will give you “Vertical Layouts”. That means
if the Plasmas or LCD’s are mounted vertically for e.g. Left side up and Right side down, then select
“90- Rotate Anticlockwise”. And if mounted with Right side up and Left side down then select
“270- Rotate Clockwise”.
• Mention the “Template Size” as shown in fig. above Generally it is preferable to give resolution of
“1024 x 768” as it is acceptable by all kind of displays.
• In “Template Details” form given above is the Drag and Drop elements i.e. Drag and Drop elements
given below to manage the “Template Layout”.
• Select “Image” option and without leaving the “Image” button drag it in the template design space.
Similarly, the user can follow for all the elements like Movie, Flash, Ticker, etc.
• After dragging the windows in template design space, resize them by using (↔) symbol. Or by
selecting the particular window, fill up all the attributes details like Height, Width, Top, etc. in the
adjacently provided table.
• In this way you can create a “Template Layout” as shown in figure below.
i. Scheduling Templates
Streme Digital Signage Framework
Before displaying the actual media contents on the Player machine, the managed display by the manager
software is needed to be scheduled.
Now first of all lets us see what we mean by the term “Scheduling”.
Scheduling is the process of deciding how to commit resources between varieties of possible tasks. Time
can be specified for each task as part of a sequence of events.
Below given are the few examples of scheduling a template.
What do you mean by Scheduling a Template?
After the template is designed by the user, it needs to be scheduled. Wherein the template will have some
specific time duration for which it will be displayed from one time slot to the other time slot.
For e.g. If the user has designed three templates with different layouts and wants to display all the three
templates at different times, as follows:
• Template1 from 9.00am to 12.00pm,
• Template2 from 12.00pm to 18.00pm,
• Template3 from 18.00 to 23.00am till 25 th December 2010 (say).
Then these three templates will keep on playing at their specific time intervals till 25 th December 2010.
But as soon as 26 th December 2010 starts, the Player machine will display only “Default Template” in the
schedule instead of display going blank.
The second question comes into picture is how to schedule a template?
Below given the overall process to schedule a template.
How to schedule a template?
Fig: Template Layout
• When template is ready for the display. Click “Save & Close” for template as shown above.
• For the template to be displayed, the user needs to schedule it initially. Follow the steps mentioned
below.
j. Uploading the Display
Let’s see now what is the meaning of the term “Uploading the Display”.
Streme Digital Signage Framework
Uploading is the transmission of contents from manager system to player system. From a network user's pointof-view,
to upload a display is to send it to another system that is set up to receive it. The File Transfer Protocol
(FTP) is the Internet facility for uploading and downloading media contents. In short, from the ordinary
workstation or small computer user's point-of-view, to upload is to send a display and to download is to receive
a display.
Below mentioned are all the steps related to the “Uploading the Display”.
• Select the particular display say “Display” and click on the upward arrow icon shown in the
“Streme: Location Manager” to select the upload icon as shown in below figure.
Fig: Upload option
pg. 99 © Niche Softek. All rights reserved. No part of this document format may be reproduced without express permission from Niche Softek.

Streme Digital Signage Framework
When the user click on the “Upload” icon on the “Streme: Location Manager”, the
“Streme: Upload Wizard” window will be opened as shown in the below figure.
On Transfer Type Form:
When the user for the first time releasing the display then in the “Transfer Type” tab,
Two options for releasing the display will be available as follows:
i) Disk (e.g. D:\, E\Release):
Here it means the display which is selected in the display list, for e.g., “Display” it will be
