Outfitted in a variety of costumes one might expect to find in a circus carnival for the Delegate’s party on Friday night, Texas State USBC (TSUSBC) Board members dressed as clowns of all varieties, with one very pompous (and self proclaimed handsome) fortuneteller, known as ZaTenPin on hand to host games of skill and entertain delegates from across the state. Texas bowlers again demonstrated their support for our charities offering donations to the BVL (Veterans) by guessing the number of marbles in the jar. Suzie Wolleck of Killeen was right on with her pick of 522. She won 50% of the pot for $158. Pink cotton candy was offered for donations to Bowl for the Cure raising $100. A vintage Shrine Circus poster benefitting High School <strong>Bowling</strong> was auctioned for $60 with an additional $72 ($132 total) raised for selling pictures with a bowling pin cutout, and, TSUSBC 3rd VP Larry Stroud auctioned his rubber chicken with proceeds of $200 being donated to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Fund. Thank you everyone. Texas’ bowlers are the best! It was an emotional weekend for everyone, including outgoing TSUSBC President Sue Hunter. Since the merger six years ago, Sue is the first and only President of the association to serve. Delegates and Board members were treated to a surprise luncheon Saturday afternoon to celebrate her years of service, not only to TSUSBC, but for the TWBA as well. First VP Tommy Miller (President elect) and longtime friend Sylvia Broyles (former TWBA Secretary and WIBC President) paid tributes. <strong>The</strong> Board is honoring Sue by purchasing a brick in her name at the entrance to the International <strong>Bowling</strong> Museum and Hall of Fame in Arlington. <strong>The</strong> Board also announced bricks may be purchased in tribute for any outgoing adult officer or director based on Board approval. With that in mind, brick purchases were authorized for Mary Antell- El Paso (deceased), as well as for Jimmy and Sharon Cline- Austin (retired). Programs covered included the Welcome2<strong>Bowling</strong> initiative focusing primarily on new members by offering a chance to purchase a performance bowling ball at a reduced price and, the opportunity to take a ½-hour bowling lesson. <strong>The</strong>se benefits are geared at reducing the number of new bowlers that quit after their first year due to not showing significant improvement. Also covered was a preview of membership options and awards. A “Top Ten” list of things for associations to remember found “HAVE FUN!” in the number one position. In legislation, delegates approved a proposal to amend the TSUSBC bylaws concerning delegate representation based on membership numbers for local associations. Previously, non-merged associations were allowed just a single delegate regardless of size, whereas now, all associations will be treated equally regardless of merged/ non-merged status. Under the adopted amendment, all associations will receive two delegates for 1 -1,000 adult members and one delegate per 1,000 members thereafter. Youth delegates will be calculated in the same manner. For example, an association with 2,001 members will receive four delegates, 3,001 will get five, etc. Membership numbers are based on the ending count as of July 31 prior to the annual meeting. Recognized for annual awards were Female Service Award: Doris Chesser- Houston, Male Bowler of the <strong>Year</strong>: Chris Castro- Dallas and Female Bowler of the <strong>Year</strong>: Jamie Mitchell- Houston. Male Service Award Winner James McGoodwin- Dallas was unable to attend due to working the USBC Women’s championship tournament in Reno. Proprietor of the <strong>Year</strong> was Carrie Stahlberg- AMF Country Lanes, San Antonio. Mention was made for Donna Conners- Houston as the Joyce Deitch Unity Award winner and for the Helen Baker Outstanding Association Service Award Sue Hunter was recognized. Ashleigh Calcote and Dominick Savage were noted as USBC National Ambassadors of the <strong>Year</strong>, with Dominick also being selected for a seat on the USBC Youth Committee. Youth Awards were presented to Coach of the <strong>Year</strong>: Joyce Claus- Garland and Service Awards were awarded to Jane Hicks- Dallas and Abha Cole- Harker Heights. <strong>The</strong> 500/ 600 club rewarded Ashleigh Calcote with a $500 scholarship and the Texas <strong>Bowling</strong> Writers recognized Larry Caldwell- Houston as Writer of the <strong>Year</strong>, Doris Chesser accepted on behalf of Greater Houston’s newsletter “<strong>News</strong> to Spare” being selected as <strong>News</strong>letter of the <strong>Year</strong>. For every 5 bowlers in the league we will be giving one spot (1:5). For example if we have 30 bowlers, we will give away 6 entries. Position rounds and final night will be bowled on the actual pattern the regional will be using in October.
