Royal and Conners Take Senior
Masters/Queens Titles
By Donna Lonon
Senior bowlers of Texas
brought their top games to Forum
Bowl Saturday and Sunday
to compete in the Texas State
USBC Senior Masters/Queens
Classic Tournament. When the
dust settled, Laney Royal Jr.
of Denton and Donna Conners
of Houston captured the titles,
trophies, and cash.
Beginning with a field of
sixty entrants, the Masters
Laney Royal Jr.
portion listed a few notables
– Mark Williams, Ron Boroff,
Paul McCordic-to name a few.
Royal was the last walk-in to
ARLINGTON — The United
States Bowling Congress Board
of Directors has elected
three-time Team USA member
Andrew Cain of Phoenix
as USBC President for the
remainder of the current term,
which ends July 31, 2012. Cain,
30, takes over for Jim Sturm,
sign up. He laughed, “At the
last minute, a friend texted me
to remind me about the tournament.
I sure am glad he did!”
Donna Conners
Royal averaged 220 in the eight
game qualifier and was the
only entrant in the tournament
to rack a perfect 300 score for
the weekend. “For Royal to
have a 300 was some accomplishment,”
remarked Paul
McCordic, who like many other
participants agreed the pattern
was challenging. Ranked first
going into the semi-round,
Royal struggled, as did the
other contestants, and finished
Three-time Team USA member
Andrew Cain named USBC President
Andrew Cain
who stepped down earlier this
month.
“I’m very humbled and honored
the board has confidence
in me, and I look forward to
continuing our positive work
for bowling and fulfilling our
mission,” said Cain, who has
finished with an 1882 pin total
for $2000 prize money and a
paid entry to the USBC Senior
Masters tournament later this
year. Royal remarked that he
doesn’t go to state or national
tournaments, but is active in
local NABI tournaments. “This
was my first seniors’ state tournament
and I was nervous, but
I had a great time and really
enjoyed the competition.”
Random Thoughts
Let’s talk USBC Masters
results. We finally had a live
TV show and four interesting
players to watch. Chris Barnes
was trying to become the third
player to win a career Grand
Slam, but that didn’t happen.
A split in the 8 th frame sealed
his fate. Off his hand it looked
like a pretty good shot, maybe
it was a little slow, but he just
2-pinned on the previous shot
on that lane so a softer speed
would be a good adjustment.
Either way, the ball hooked
high, he split, and a phenomenal
week ends in bitter
disappointment. You might
think that one will be tough to
shake off but Barney normally
bounces back with ease.
The winner, Mike Fagan
threw the last seven strikes
to snatch the victory from
Barnes. Fagan bowled two very
good games in the finals, only
missing the pocket one time,
and finally figuring out the
carry in the second half of the
final match. It’s Fagan’s third
PBA title and first major. He’s a
man, who usually doesn’t show
much emotion, but on Sunday
he let it out, and I liked it. His
girlfriend and fellow bowler,
Emily Maier got as much if not
more air time than he did, and
was also emotional after the
victory. As for the final match,
the thing that stands out to
me is the very long time that
Tony Franklin, Publisher
Fagan took to throw his eighth
frame. There was some sanding
of the thumb hole, some
rosin on the fingers, blowing
into the hole, and a balk in
the third step. When he finally
did throw the shot it was high
flush. I was wondering if the
long delay would cause any
discourse for Barnes, and sure
enough he got up and probably
threw it softer than he wanted.
Whether or not that had any
effect, I don’t know but there’s
a strong chance it did.
There were lots of USBC
dignitary’s in the stands for
the TV Finals and also a Jim
Welch sighting as he’s the
Manager of Sunset Station
Lanes, where the tournament
was held. Newly elected
USBC President Andrew Cain
was also front row. Cain is a
30-year-old bowler and small
business owner from Arizona.
I think it’s a very interesting
move, but one that shows great
confidence in the young man.
I admittedly don’t really know
what the responsibility of the
USBC Board of Directors is, but
will be interested in speaking
with Cain and finding out.
Make sure to check out the
April issue of D magazine for
an article on Mr. 899 himself,
Bill Fong. He was recently
interviewed by the monthly
mag, regarding the two year
anniversary of his near-perfect
Former USBC Masters
champion Brett Wolfe recently
set a new record. He shot 886
in a Sport league in Mesa, AZ.
According to USBC spokesperson
Matt Cannizzaro, the
previous high Sport series was
869 shot by Mike Norris Jr.
of the Detroit area. For Wolfe
this is his second sanctioned
886 series, which I’m guessing
is also a USBC record, but I
have not confirmed that. “It
was very satisfying to know
that my time spent working on
sport patterns paid off with a
new record,” said Wolfe on the
score. He also has some good
thoughts on sport bowling as a
whole, “It shows that you don’t
need 15 boards to shoot a huge
score, you just need three or
four. Sport bowling isn’t splitting
boards, whether its targeting,
speed or tilt, consistency
allows you to score higher, not
throwing the perfect shot.”
Will the real DJ please stand
up…he did, DJ Archer dropped
a $10,000 hammer on the
professional bowling community
by winning a special prize
fund in Las Vegas last month.
He dominated the USBC Masters,
the International Mini and
the WTBA International Open
qualifying rounds by averaging
over 240 to win the top prize.
“I was able to match up really
well early in each tourney,
and then was able to move left
and throw my ball to the spot
and watch it hook back,” said
Archer on how he was able to
crush each event. On the win,
he added, “It feels really good
to know that I’m still able to
compete at that high level and
get the higher rewards offered
on the PBA level.” Congrats to
What is your high series?
This is my high series, and my
was able to stay in the same
area and just hit my target.
My coach Mike Lewis started
working with me three years
ago. I was bowling SASBA and
wasn’t doing that great, then
my wife got me some lessons
with him and I have been
shooting scores ever since.
What ball did you throw?
The Track 718A
Who drills your balls? Bill
Fong and Danny Westbrook at
Innovative Pro Shop.
What is your all-time favorite
bowling ball? The Columbia
Sur D
What is your all-time high
average? Last year I booked a
228 at Plano Super Bowl.
How long have you been
bowling? I started when I was
15, so 41 years now. There
was a show on TV called Taca
auction. They were auctioning
off a Manhattan ball and bag,
so I bid on it and won it. I
think the ball was donated by
Jerry Pinka. So after I got the
ball I started bowling at Zang’s
Bowl and have been doing it
ever since.
Who is your favorite pro
bowler? The great Earl Anthony,
he made it look so simple.
He was smooth and nothing
seemed to rattle him.
Most memorable bowling
moment? The last time USBC
Nationals was in Syracuse I
started out with a couple of
strikes, but on the third shot
my thumb got stuck in the ball
and it goes 5 feet up in the air,
slams into my lane, then jumps
the gutter and gets 5 pins on
the adjacent lane. It wasn’t my
best moment, but it is something
I will never forget.
What lessons has the game
taught you? Try to enjoy bowling
and have fun, even when
competing. Attitude means a
lot so even if I don’t have a
good night I can still look back
and know that I had a good
time with my friends.
Denmark National
Team trains at ITRC
ARLINGTON — With the
top training tools and evaluation
systems in the world, the
International Training and
Research Center has attracted
national teams from across the
globe. Now one of Europe’s
leading bowling programs
has joined the growing list of
nations using the ITRC as a
temporary training home.
While Denmark might be
the reigning men’s and women’s
European team champion,
both teams decided to make
the trip to Arlington to see if
they might discover that extra
edge before they attempt to
defend their titles this summer.
They are the first European
team to train at the ITRC.
“We’re trying to be better,
of course,” Denmark coach
Christer Backe said. “The reason
we came here is I believe
they have the best facilities in
the world. I’m really looking
forward to seeing how things
work and how they measure
everything and we’ll have
something we can take away.”
Last summer, Denmark
topped Finland to claim the
Men’s European Championships
team title and Denmark
won the five-player team competition
at the 2010 Women’s
European Championships.
The women will look to
defend their title in June while
the men will look to do the
same in August.
“It’s quite an honor to have
a team of this caliber come
over here,” Team USA head
coach Rod Ross said. “They are
getting ready for the championships
this year. It’s great they
have decided to come over
here and see how we are doing
things and let us help them.”
Ross said the training will
not stop for the Denmark teams
once they leave the ITRC.
“We’re able to give them plans
for their players when they go
back to help develop them and
I’ve been bowling since I
was ten years old and have
been hanging around pro
shops since I was sixteen, but
there are very few things that I
actually do for myself.
Like many others I depend
on the experts to lead me to the
promised land, but lately I have
taken more interest in doing
things for myself.
When a buddy gave me a
few of his old bowling balls to
tryout I decided to learn how
to do plug work. I must tell you
that I’ve under appreciated the
fine work that pro shop operators
have done over the years
and just how much work goes
into plugging a bowling ball.
Although the tools are much
better today than even ten
years ago, the process is time
consuming and one that I will
no longer take for granted.
Thanks to the boys at
Ballard’s Bowling Solutions for
all that they do for me and my
game.
In sports there are many
derogatory statements you can
make about a person without
getting under their skin, but
the term “choke” is the one
that seems to most cut like a
knife.
We hear it all the time,
“choke”, but what does it really
mean. It seems the only time
that it’s used is when someone
fails to be successful in crunch
time. However, I would argue
that “choking” is more about
buckling under pressure, and
trust me there is a difference.
I started thinking about this
last week when my brother
and I went to lunch, and I was
I needed a mark in the tenth
He told me I choked! I got
defensive and determined that
the definition of choking is not
failing to succeed in crunch
time, but rather succumbing
to pressure in crunch time. I
feel like I’m a good person to
ask on this subject because I’ve
done both.
Let me paint the picture of a
“choke” job. You need a strike
in the tenth frame to win the
match. Your hands are sweating
more than normal and
every single sound or movement
around you is distracting.
Your heart feels like it’s about
to jump out of your chest, and
somehow you now must take
deep breaths just to attempt
to calm the nerves. Then you
setup for the shot. You can feel
your body shaking and you’re
no longer focusing on the shot,
but rather on trying to execute
while every ounce of your body
is not ready to let it go. You
get to the line and you throw
it slower than normal and pull
it left. You immediately know
it’s a terrible shot, but you hope
for the best. As the ball sails
to the Brooklyn side you hope
a miracle can happen and you
can still strike. As the ball
hits the 1-2 it deflects so softly
leaving the 5-8 and you just
choked.
The pressure of the situation
caused you to make a terrible
shot, and by my definition you
choked!
Now let’s discuss a nonchoke
failure. Again needing
a strike in the tenth to win
you think about the last shot
you through on that lane and
determine that the four pin
you left was caused because
the lane was hooking more.
You decide rather than moving
two boards left you are going
to pick up your ball speed and
try and shoot it down the lane
more before it hooks. You are
nervous, but you have been
there many times so the situation
is not taking over your
body physically. You know
what you want to do and you
commit to the adjustment. As
you make your shot the ball
sails through the hook spot,
skids down the lane too far,
and you leave the washout. Did
you choke? No. It’s the same
adjustment you would make
The fourth annual Chris
Paul PBA Celebrity Invitational
presented by Sheets Brand, a
fundraiser to benefit Paul’s CP3
Foundation, featured PBA stars
Pete Weber, Jason Belmonte,
Wes Malott and Ryan Shafer
along with several of Paul’s celebrity
friends from the worlds
of sports and entertainment.
In this year’s event, an
expanded roster of celebrities
got the competition underway
with a special one-ball, lowman-out
Super Shootout. Miami
Dolphins running back Reggie
Bush was the first player eliminated,
followed by Grammy
Award-winning recording artist
Ciara, former New York Giants
defensive end Michael Strahan,
comedian Kevin Hart, Entourage
actor Jerry Ferrara and
Griffin. In the final showdown
frame between Paul and Grey’s
Anatomy actor Jesse Williams,
Williams threw back-to-back
strikes for the victory.
The celebrities then teamed
up with the PBA stars for the
Baker format trios event, with
the PBA player throwing shots
in the first, fourth, seventh and
10th frames, and the celebrities
filling out the other frames. In
the opening round, Belmonte,
Hart and Paul routed Shafer,
Ciara and Strahan, 178-90,
while Weber, Ferrara and Griffin
eliminated Malott, Williams
and Bush, 154-131.
In the championship match,
Belmonte, Hart and Paul
trailed Weber, Ferrara and
Griffin by only one pin after
seven frames. Hart and Paul
converted eight-count spares in
the eighth and ninth frames,
respectively, but consecutive
strikes by Ferrara and Griffin
set up a dramatic finish.
Belmonte’s double in the 10th
frame forced Weber to strike
on his first shot to lock up the
187-180 victory.
“Blake (Griffin) set me
up for the 10th frame when
he threw the best shot of the
entire night,” Weber said. “It
was kind of neat of him to do
that. I don’t think Chris (Paul)
enjoyed it a whole lot.
“For someone who doesn’t
bowl a lot, Blake understands
the object of the game,” Weber
added. “He hit the headpin
almost every time he threw
the ball, and then he made his
spares.”
“Normally it comes down
to the pro needing to strike to
win, but in this case it was up
to the celebrities,” Belmonte
said. “Chris and Kevin did their
jobs on my team by getting
spares, but unfortunately Jerry
and Blake got strikes on the
other team. Kevin made lots
of comments about the odds
of that ever happening. It was
very funny. I didn’t expect both
PBA and Teen Masters team
up to conduct TM qualifiers
SEATTLE — The nation’s
top youth bowlers will have
the opportunity to compete on
Professional Bowlers Association
lane conditions and rub
elbows with the greats in the
game when Teen Masters
qualifiers will be conducted in
conjunction with selected PBA
Regional tournaments in 2012.
PBA has entered into an
agreement with Killer ‘B’
Promotions to conduct 18
Teen Masters qualifiers at PBA
Regional events beginning in
March through the end of May.
The Teen Masters qualifiers
will be conducted on lanes
designated for Teen Masters
competition.
The Teen Masters, America’s
longest running national
championship event for youth
bowlers, has featured challenging
lane conditions since its
beginning in 1997. “Our slogan
has always been ‘Bring Your
Spare Game!’ Our partnership
with the PBA strengthens the
opportunity for America’s top
high school competitors to
test their bowling skills and
mental fortitude in a demanding
environment,” said Teen
Masters founder, Gary Beck.
“This is a great program
because it will provide youth
bowlers with additional
topflight competitive bowling
opportunities through the
Lane Laughter
setting of PBA competition,”
said PBA Commissioner Tom
Clark. “The goal is to grow
competitive bowling among
youth bowlers who love the
sport and this is a great vehicle
in which to do it.”
Many Teen Masters champions
have gone on to advance
to the top levels of the sport.
On the boys side, Mike Fagan,
the 1997 champion, and Ryan
Ciminelli, the 2004 champion,
have both become national
PBA champions. On the girls
side, Brittni Hamilton, the
2006 champion, and Danielle
McEwan, the 2009 champion,
have both claimed NCAA titles
and membership on Team USA.
Teen Masters will also
conduct a regular schedule
of stand-alone qualifiers that
youth bowlers can enter to
earn spots for the National
Championships. All qualifying
events will determine
invitations for the Teen Masters
National Championships which
will be conducted July 8-12 in
Cleveland, Ohio.
The Teen Masters conducted
a landmark national championship
event in 2011 that culminated
with the Grand Championships
being conducted on
a specially-constructed lane
in New York’s Grand Central
Terminal where Zack Hattori
Australia’s Belmonte vs. Finland’s Palermaa
prove all two-handed bowlers aren’t the same
PBA’s premier two-handed players have grown and prospered worlds apart, literally and figuratively
SEATTLE — Jason Belmonte
and Osku Palermaa aren’t the
only two-handed bowlers to
make waves in bowling, but
the fact that they have risen to
the top of the game at virtually
the same age, but half a world
apart, is too ironic to ignore.
And while their stories are
similar in many aspects, they
remain worlds apart as competitors
and bowling stylists.
the two by 112 days. “Belmo”
and grew up in Espoo, Finland.
He is 6-foot and weighs 200
“We just happened to live, one
here and the other on the other
side of the globe. The only
difference is (Belmo’s) father
owned a bowling center and
mine worked at one.”
Both naturally migrated to
the two-handed technique as
tots, far too young to be able
to pick up a bowling ball and
throw it with one hand. So
they independently learned to
roll the ball using two hands.
Neither had mentors teaching
them the technique because it
just wasn’t the way you were
supposed to bowl. But for them,
it worked.
And even though they both
engage both hands in their
delivery, they don’t thing they
bowl the same, at all.
“We actually throw the ball
quite a bit different,” Palermaa
said, “but there are similarities
as well. I guess I’m a little
more powerful. I have a little
more speed and more revs. I’ve
been working on getting the
revs down and I think he has
been, also. I’m also working
on slowing my speed. With the
bowling balls we have now, it’s
not an advantage to have 500,
600 revs.”
Belmonte agrees.
“Just like one-handed bowlers,
no two two-handers will
throw the ball alike,” he said.
“It’s kind of frustrating to put
us all into one category, that
we throw the ball the same,
because we’re different people,
we’re different bowlers.
“Osku has his skills and I
have mine. It’s like saying Pete
Weber and Walter Ray throw
the ball the same because they
throw the ball one-handed. It’s
a really ridiculous comment.
And what about Brian Valenta
(another two-handed PBA Tour
player who lives in Lockport,
Ill.)? I could keep going. Of
every two-hander I’ve ever
seen, no one throws the ball
like me, and I don’t throw it
like them, and I’ve never seen
two who are alike.
“It’s just another style,”
Belmonte said, “and you put
your own spin on it – your
own touch, your own personality.
Unless there are two people
who are identical in every way,
shape and form, then perhaps
they could bowl the same. But
as far as I know there are no
two bowlers who are alike.
“There are a lot of things
(Osku and I) have in common.
Our rev rates are high, our ball
speeds are high. But Osku’s tilt
on the ball, his hand position,
his feet are a lot different than
mine. I can’t quite throw it a
million miles an hour like he
can, but we also share a lot of
traits.
“We have really quick steps,
we’re both very much over the
ball at the release point, our
follow-throughs are very close,
right in front of our faces.
There are a lot of similarities,
but we’re a world apart, too.”
The bottom line for Belmonte
is, he no longer feels like
an oddity. He and Palermaa
and a handful of others have
By Leisha Murr
Greetings from Las Vegas!
I had a great time this week
hanging out with friends that I
only see a couple times a year
during the megabucks week.
After working the Mini Eliminator
for nearly ten years, I
know 90% of the bowlers who
come out every year by name.
I am probably friends with
half of them, and a few more I
only know through Facebook.
Most of the bowlers stay at
the casino that is hosting the
tournament that week, so I’ve
gotten to know several of the
bowlers, especially the ones
that gamble, pretty well over
the years. We spent hours each
night chatting over the blackjack
and craps tables.
This trip started out really
slow on the gambling front.
It got so bad I was looking at
the app on my phone to find
a branch of my bank to go
re-stock the funds. The great
news is I didn’t actually have
to go to the bank. That night,
things started to turn around.
I had a couple of really good
rounds at the blackjack table.
Then, we were rolling the dice
and that table got hot as well.
One guy, who wasn’t a bowler,
rolled for good thirty minutes
and hit five or six points. That
kind of roll can get you back
on the plus side pretty quickly!
Chad Lemen, from the High
Pot with a Twist league, pocketed
276-269-266 = 811 numbers en
route to earning high-set honors
Westcreek Lanes.
Jacki Archer led the ladies
scoring race with a stalwart
as each registered award-winning
I’m not a gambler who
usually puts much money into
the machines. Occasionally, I
will put a twenty into a video
poker machine if I’m sitting at
the bar or waiting on someone,
but that’s about it. This trip, we
found a video craps machine.
It’s a big circle that about eight
people can sit around and play.
The dice are in a tube in the
middle where they bounce
around and when it’s your turn
to roll, you hit the red button
and it gives the dice a big
bounce and stops on the number.
The table on your screen
looks just like a craps table and
you just touch where you want
to place your bet. The roll button
reminds me of the old TV
game show, Press Your Luck,
so every time it was my turn
to roll, I’m holding my hands
over the button saying, “No
Whammies, No Whammies!!”
In this case, a Whammy would
be rolling a 7, but as it turns
out, you don’t seem to roll as
many sevens on this machine
as you do on the actual craps
table. Hopefully this machine
will still be around on my next
trip out west.
I spent a lot of time on the
tables this trip, so much so that
the casino host knows me by
name. He gave me his card and
told me to call if I ever need
anything. It’s always good to
know someone at the casino;
I even asked him for some
tickets to the VIP Super Bowl
party on Sunday.
Speaking of the Super Bowl,
did anybody in our area even
care who won? It’s always a
lot of fun to be in Vegas with
all the action and excitement
of the Super Bowl, but if the
Cowboys aren’t playing, I don’t
have a favorite team.
There are close to 500
different things you can bet
on for the Super Bowl game
besides which team is going
to win. You can bet on which
team will win the coin toss,
who will call the first timeout,
who will punt first, who will
score first, will that score be
a touchdown or a field goal
or safety, who will score first
each quarter, who will score
last, and will the team to score
last win the game. You can bet
on the total number of points
scored in the game, the number
of touchdowns, the number of
quarterback sacks, the number
of field goals, will either team
miss a field goal, the total
number of interceptions, total
fumbles, and total penalties.
I was just skipping around
the list; it goes on to individual
players and how many yards
for passing, rushing, etc, etc.
You could go nuts betting all
the different possibilities. The
best bet of Sunday’s game
had to be the safety. It’s only
happened six times in a Super
Bowl game that there was a
safety scored and that bet paid
50-1. It was also 100-1 that the
first score of the game would
be 2, which has only happened
once prior in Super Bowl
history. It was a close game
which made it fun to watch
while enjoying all the food and
drinks in the VIP room.
I’m sure we will get full
press releases on the tournaments
in Las Vegas this week,
but here’s a little re-cap. Canadian
Dan MacLelland, who
finished fourth at the USBC
Masters, won the International
Mini and $30k. Watch out
Jim Carter, he was trying to
steal your partner for the Luci
this year. Chris Barnes who
finished second at the Masters
bowled a 300 the last game of
qualifying for the International
Open to jump from 9th into
2nd place and paid trip to Paris
for the finals. The leader for
the International Open is Liz
Johnson who got 6 pins a game
per WTBA rules but led in total
pinfall without the added pins.
Joining them in Paris will be
Walter Ray Williams, Jr. who
THE BOWLING NEWS | Thursday, February 16, 2012 | Page 13
finished 3rd in qualifying.
The winner of the $10,000
bonus money for bowling all
three events at Sunset Station
was DJ Archer who averaged
over 240 for the three events
combined. DJ qualified 5th at
the USBC Masters and was over
100 pins behind Chris Barnes,
but then he posted 1090 for
four at the International Mini
FAGAN TAKES TITLE
Continued from Page 1
A three-time winner on the
Professional Bowlers Association
30-pin comeback in the back
half of the game to pull off
the upset over the top-seeded
Strike Zone Bowling Center.
“All week long I really
wasn’t thinking about majors,
matches or what my opponents
were doing. I just wanted to
do what I do to the best of my
ability,” said Fagan, a two-time
Team USA member who earned
$50,000 for the victory. “Now
the fact that it has paid off feels
amazing. Sometimes you can
Fagan failed to strike in
championship match, while
Barnes started with four out of
five strikes to start the match.
Fagan then rattled off seven
consecutive strikes to take
control.
“I really didn’t like any
of the first couple shots off
my hand because they were
a little fast or a little bit too
aggressive,” Fagan said. “The
next few shots I really just
wanted to get my body position
right and let the swing
follow and the pins cooperated
thankfully.”
Barnes was hoping to
in bowling history have
accomplished the feat - Mike
“This one hurts; it was a
difficult day,” said Barnes,
chance to win this tournament
because it’s so hard to get
through all the matches.”
Fagan advanced to the
championship match by defeating
2003 Masters champion
Bryon Smith of Roseburg, Ore.,
228-180. Smith never led in
the match and failed to double,
allowing Fagan to pull away
with a four-bagger down the
stretch.
In the opening match,
Smith had a come-from-behind
victory against Canada’s
Dan MacLelland, 251-212.
MacLelland opened the match
by striking on five of his
first six shots and grabbing a
24-pin lead, but an open in the
seventh frame allowed Smith to
pull ahead and take the win.
although everyone is entitled
to their own opinion I would
hope that people would think
twice before throwing out such
an ugly term.
The truth is, that the only
person who really knows
whether they choked or not
is that person themselves. I
have failed to succeed both
ways, and I can assure you that
buckling under pressure is way
worse than simply failing to
execute.
The next time that you have
a big shot and fail, think about
which category you just fell
under. If it’s a choke job think
about how that would feel if
someone called you out on it.
Personally, I can be honest
with myself and determine
whether or not I choked. Can
you?
be topped by the live finals of
the Alka-Seltzer Plus Liquid
Gels USBC Masters telecast on
January 29, which reached an
audience of 1.1 million viewers
– the largest in two years.
The inaugural Xtra Frame
PBA Membership Drive Targets
Renewals, Youth, International
SEATTLE — The Professional
Bowlers Association has
launched a new membership
drive to encourage new members
to experience PBA competition,
former members to
return to the fold, invite young
bowlers to test their skills at
the PBA level at an affordable
price, and attract bowlers from
around the world to enjoy the
benefits of PBA membership
as competitors in the new
PBA-World Tenpin Bowling
Association World Bowling
Tour program.
The new membership
campaign introduces a new
low-cost PBA24 membership
specifically designed for
players ages 19-24, and a new
PBA International membership
to grant specific PBA benefits,
including the ability to win
PBA Tour titles, to international
players who bowl in PBA-WBT
events.
“The PBA24 program is
designed to make membership
significantly more accessible to
a vital group of talented young
bowlers who have decided they
are not going to bowl in college
or exhausted their collegiate
eligibility, and are looking for
the next challenge to expand
their skills,” said PBA CEO
Geoff Reiss. “There is no better
place to do that than in PBA
competition.”
In addition to the competitive
challenges, membership
in the PBA includes financial
advances including discounted
lineage fees for practice at
hundreds of bowling centers
across the nation that support
the PBA, discounts on the latest
in bowling equipment provided
by PBA’s Registered Product
Companies, instructional
opportunities, a membership
newsletter and a number of
other privileges.
“From a purely economic
standpoint, PBA membership
provides a wide range of
benefits that vastly out-weigh
the cost of membership dues,”
said PBA Commissioner Tom
Clark.
For past members, the PBA
is offering a no-penalty renewal
program through March 31.
Reinstatement and/or initiation
fees will be waived for those
who restore full and standard
memberships – a savings of
$99 – and an amnesty program
will waive up to three months
of dues owed for 2010 and/
or 2011. Players who rejoin by
March 1 who have won a PBA
Tour, Regional or Senior title
at any point in their careers
will be eligible to enter the
2012 PBA Tournament of
Champions.
New members and players
who rejoin will be eligible
for the new Regional Players
Doubles Championship
presented by Hammer (Feb.
10-12 at South Point Bowling
Center in Las Vegas), and to
receive invitations for the 2013
13 proposals to be decided at
2012 USBC Annual Meeting
ARLINGTON — Delegates
will vote on 13 proposals
involving changes to
United States Bowling Congress
bylaws, league rules and
tournament rules at the USBC
Annual Meeting on April 27 in
Arlington.
The amendments include
a series of changes to USBC
bylaws called the Financial
Freedom and Flexibility Proposals.
The Financial Freedom
and Flexibility Proposals will
allow associations at all levels
to better manage their financial
future by removing dues cap
restrictions from USBC bylaws.
USBC will host a series of
meetings around the country
to discuss with delegates
why the Financial Freedom
and Flexibility Proposals will
benefit USBC associations and
the organization as a whole by
embracing free-market principles
that are the foundation
for growing businesses.
Of the 13 proposals, seven
relate to changes to USBC bylaws,
four refer to league rules
and two to tournaments. Other
proposals relating to USBC
bylaws include:
* Removing the provision
allowing members who join
in a summer league to receive
next season’s membership as
well.
* Removing the fiscal year
from the bylaws.
* Limiting the USBC President’s
term in office to a single,
three-year term.
Proposals relating to playing
rules and tournaments include:
his/her “sponsor.”
to adjust a player’s average
upward during the season with
a two-thirds vote.
* Require league games
bowled in a playoff or special
contest to count toward
* Require tournament
bowlers to use the highest of
either their composite average
of all leagues, or the bowler’s
highest single league average of
21 games or more.
PIN POINTS
TO PONDER
By CHUCK PEZZANO
“If all the year were playing
holidays, to sport would
be as tedious as to work.”
—SHAKESPEARE
To many millions who love
to bowl and can’t bowl as
much as they would like because
they don’t have the time
or money, it is near blasphemy
to suggest that bowling can be
work. Yet, many bowlers work
harder at bowling than the
work they do making a living.
Not on purpose, of course.
Make no mistake, bowling
on the professional level
is work because it is a job,
a profession, a life changing
career, and if an aspiring or
veteran pro doesn’t treat it as
such, then he won’t or can’t do
as well as he could, or should.
All dedicated, successful pro
bowlers, regardless of outward
personality, have a winning
attitude. The purpose of their
job, the always goal, is to win.
That’s really the only way they
can prove they are doing their
job at it’s best. Bowlers are
happy and somewhat thrilled
when they win, and it is the
satisfaction of a job well done
more often than that giddy, out
of sight feeling. Wins, on a per
participation basis, are rare, so
coming close, finishing second,
in the top five, cashing, all play
a role in counting how well the
job is being done.
Does an accountant jump
for joy when he balances the
books.? Does a carpenter drink
champagne when every job is
completed? Does an auto mechanic
cheer when he finishes
a brake job?
On rare occasions, yes, most
times, no.
Yet, all must feel a sense
of satisfaction, and a pride in
their ability in a chosen field.
The same applies to anyone
in any field, no matter what,
and judgment should be based
on how they did the job, and
whether they did their best.
A fun bowler’s approach to
the game is akin to a hen’s egg
The celebrity aspect of
the Chris Paul event creates
staggering media exposure for
the PBA. As a group, celebrity
participants Paul, Michael
Strahan, Ciara, Jesse Williams,
Jerry Ferrar, Kevin Hart, Blake
Griffin, Reggie Bush, Drew
Carey, Mindless Behavior, the
L.A. Clippers and the NBA
have a combined total of more
than 100 million Twitter and
Facebook followers. Sports
Illustrated’s website, si.com,
has posted a special “Athletes
in the Bowling Alley” photo
when compared to a pro’s take.
Pro bowling can be a wonderful
way to make a living—if
you can live through it. It is far
from a picnic or a free lunch
because not too much is free
except opportunity—and that
doesn’t knock unless you are
prepared to knock harder.
No pro bowler can long escape
the learning process, the
constant study and adjustment,
the loneliness in a crowd, and
the crowded feeling when
you’re alone and the enormous
physical and mental strain.
There are all types of
frustrations to parry the up
times. But, no matter how
badly you’re bowling or feeling,
when the lights go on for
the next tournament, there’s a
renewal, a can’t wait hunger
that can only be satisfied by
competition.
That’s what real love for a
sport is all about. Love helps in
aiming to excel, but there’s also
more than a little hate at times.
When the inward love begins
to wane, the scores begin to
dip—and love can’t halt the
passing of time that slowly
but surely diminishes physical
skills.
Pro bowlers deserve no
special favors because they are
pro bowlers but do rate a little
extra understanding. Their
chosen field is a difficult one,
and too many take their special
skills for granted because so
many bowlers for a moment,
a game or short series, can
match those skills they display
tourney after tourney—year
after year.
They can’t become that
proficient without endless hard
work and sacrifice. For that
they have earned respect of all
bowlers, all athletes.
Most people like to bowl
when they have a little time
off. The pro often enjoys nothing
better than a holiday away
from bowling.
As usual, Shakespeare was
year’s (and earlier) events,
and Kevin Hart and PBA West
Region competitor J.T. (Action)
Jackson, a Los Angeles-based
on “TMZ” to discuss bowling
as a sport (you can easily link
Memories of Dad
By Bill Hazlett, Son
I guess it’s time, I don’t
want it to be, but he is gone.
After 94 years it’s time to say
goodbye to my Dad, Frank
Hazlett.
He’s been a constant in
my life, a rock, a teacher, a
builder and fix-it man extraordinaire
and a shining example
of what a man should be.
He had many interests,
fishing, his church, anything
mechanical or wood that
needed fixing or refinishing.
And of course his bowling. He
was able to bowl through the
2010-11 leagues season and his
senior team won their league
last year.
Dad worked in the back
shop for The Parsons Sun, the
daily newspaper there in Parsons.
His job was to set type
for the paper and maintain
the typesetting machinery.
The only time to do a lot of
the maintenance was when
the machines weren’t being
used, so one night a week he
worked after hours when they
were not being used. That was
the time I got to hang out with
him at work. I always thought
I was helping, although
looking back I’m not sure how
much help it really was.
I guess this was how my
interest in printing and the
Graphic Arts was ignited. By
the time I was ready to go
to work, I was tired of being
around newspapers so went
into the commercial printing
side of the business and have
made my living there for a
long time. Now, guess what,
here I am, back in the newspaper
business. Full circle, I
guess.
He did a great job of
teaching me how to get on
with life. No matter what I’m
doing, there is a memory of
Gota pick up that
spare
him showing me how it’s
done. Whether it’s how to
puzzle your way through
a problem, cooking over a
campfire, or fixing something,
he showed me how
it’s done then stood back
and let me try.
We always tried to time
his visits to Texas to coincide
with a bowling event
here. He loved to watch,
meet and talk with the
bowlers. He knew a huge
number of bowlers and they
always seemed to remember
him. Then he’d go back to
Parsons and name-drop at
league. It got so we’d send
pictures back with him so
he could prove the brags.
We tried many times to
get him to move to Texas
to be close to me, my sister
Beth Wood and his grandson
Tony Franklin and his
family, but he never was
interested in moving. All his
friends and his church were
there. Loved to visit, but
Parsons was home.
As his health started
failing he moved to Woodridge
Estates, an assisted
living facility, these friends,
neighbors and the staff
at Woodridge became an
incredible support group. It
was difficult with him so
far away, there is no way to
fly there, you have to drive
it, and it’s a 350 mile trip
one way. While my sister
and I went as often as we
could, the local friends from
church, bowling and Maddy
Shockey director of Woodridge
and a fellow bowler
as well as the staff there
were a invaluable help.
I miss him, but the
memories are there every
day, and I’ll get on with life,
just like he taught me.
Need a strike here
doin’ what he loved to do
