Walter Ray Williams Jr. with Rose Bowl GM
ALLENTOWN, Pa. — Professional
Bowlers Association
legend Walter Ray Williams
Jr. of Ocala, Fla., won the PBA
Senior Mark Roth Allentown
Open Tuesday for his first tour
win in more than a year.
Williams defeated 2009
Senior Player of the Year Ron
Mohr of Eagle River, Alaska,
268-168, in the championship
match at Playdrome Rose Bowl
for his first senior title of the
season and second of his Senior
Tour career.
Williams left little doubt
of the outcome by opening
the championship match with
eight consecutive strikes before
leaving a 10 pin in the ninth
frame. Mohr, trying for his
second consecutive win this
season having won the Senior
Miller High Life Classic in
Mooresville, N.C., three weeks
ago, could never get anything
going.
“I got off to a good start and
Ron just couldn’t get lined up,
especially on the right lane,”
said the 51- year-old Williams.
“I was able to play between the
first and second arrow and just
had a nice angle to the pocket
and great ball reaction from
there.”
Age is just a number
By Breanne Eoff, Staff Writer
Bob Drewitt started bowling
at the age of 6 when his dad
put him into a youth league.
He continued to bowl through
the years, including during his
thirty-two year career in the
Air Force where he held positions
of aircraft maintenance
and classified logistics program
management. Bowling even
led him to his wife Sharon.
They’ve been married 42 years
and have two children and
three grandchildren.
And it was bowling that
gave him his most recent thrill.
At the age of 65, Bob recently
shot his first career 800 series
at Mel’s Lone Star Lanes and
then nine days later he shot
his second. The first 800 was
a big one too, an 832 series
Bob Drewitt
that included games of 279,
278 and 275. His first thought
was “how can a guy at 65
shoot his first 800 series.” His
Nation ties Women’s
Texas State Record
By Genie Franklin,
The women’s high threegame
Texas state record was
in jeopardy three weeks ago
when Stefanie Nation showed
up to bowl league at AMF
Showplace-Euless, soon to be
the host of the Women’s US
Open.
Nation had no expectations
of bowling well that night,
her main goal was to enjoy
herself and have fun bowling
league with her friends and
teammates.
She soon found herself in
the tenth frame, of the first
game, with the opportunity to
shoot 300. Only having shot
300 three times before, she
presented herself like a veteran
and nailed the three strikes for
her fourth perfect game.
Paul Fleming, Bedford, TX,
and doubles partner Chris
Johnson, Grand Prairie, TX,
defeated the team of Geoffrey
Young and Josh McBride, both
of Wichita, KS, 1278-1276,
to take home the Red River
Doubles title at Cowtown Bowling
Palace on May 6-7.
Fleming and Johnson took
home $2900 for the win,
including Calcutta. Young and
McBride took home $2060,
including Calcutta for their
second place finish.
The final match of the
tournament came down to
No one in the building knew
that more was to come.
Not letting up on the
striking barrage, Stefanie found
herself in the same situation
Chris Castro lighting up the
scoreboards everywhere
By Tyson Branagan, Staff
Writer
For the better part of the
2010-2011 bowling season,
Chris Castro of Garland,
TX, has consistently found
himself atop the leaderboards
in tournaments and amongst
the top averages in all leagues
he bowls in. To put it simply,
it has been a banner year for
the 40 year old southpaw, a
member of Storm/RotoGrip
bowling staff and The Bowling
Shop-Garland manger.
Since mid October, Castro
has won eleven separate
events, eight of a possible ten
events at the Greater Tulsa
Open, including the optional
side events, Dallas City doubles
and both scratch and handicap
all-events, and is currently
leading in division 1 of the
Texas State team event as well
as all-events. It is quite the
upswing for a standout bowler
who has suffered from a bad
wrist for a few years now.
“I have been having a lot
of problems with my wrist
lately, and a friend referred me
to a new doctor who has done
wonders for me,” Castro said
on the turnaround. “I now have
next to no pain and am able to
throw the ball like I used to,
and it’s working out great.”
On top of the amazing
standout performances in
tournament play, Castro has
been bowling honor scores
on a regular basis in his four
leagues, where he carries a
high average of 240 at AMF
Garland, and a 229 in the Dallas
TCBA Travel League. Now
at the conclusion of the winter
season, he tallied a total of five
300 games and eleven series of
800 or better.
“It has been an amazing
season to say the least, and
I owe a lot to the equipment
as well,” he said. “The Storm
and RotoGrip stuff gets further
down the lane for me with as
much as I hit up on the ball,
and has been a perfect match.”
Just this week, Castro took
his game to Reno for the USBC
Open Championships in an
effort to take his state and
regional dominance to the
national level. And while he
leaves without his name atop
the leaderboards, he put up a
very respectable total of 1955
all-events, including a 691 in
singles, and an 1199 in doubles
with partner Brian Lohse, all
scores good enough to bring
home some extra money and
add it to the season intake.
LeCroy/Francis win Annual SASBA
Member/Member at Cowtown
By Jim King
The results from the annual
SASBA Member/Member
doubles held at Cowtown
Bowling Palace May 14th and
15th.
Joe LeCroy and Dennis
Francis qualified 4th on Saturday,
then hung around the first
half of the finals on Sunday,
before getting it into gear and
climbing to the lead.
Once they got in front, they
just kept expanding their lead
and no one could bounce back
to catch them.
Hard-charging Gary James
and Steve Wright got 2nd,
Blane Adkins and Mike Warren
finished 3rd, Phil Bailey and
Hank Jordan were 4th and
T.J. Johnson and Rick Minier
rounded out the top five.
Thanks to Jamie Brooks and
staff for being gracious hosts.
The shot was fair and they
have done lots of work in the
center getting it updated.
Our next tournament is
a member/guest doubles in
Pasadena in two weeks. Two
weeks after that, we’ll be at
Cityview in Fort Worth for a
50/60/70/guest foursome with
the Swiss Format.
AGE IS JUST
Continued from Page 1
next thought was of his old
Air Force friend who shared a
similar feat. “My friend that I
bowled league with in the Air
Force shot his first 800 at 64,
so after it sunk in that I just
shot an 800 series I wanted
to call him and tell him that
I beat him at being older and
shooting an 800,” said Drewitt.
His second 800 series, also
shot at Mel’s Lone Star Lanes,
was an 835 series shot in the
Thursday night league. He almost
“Broke the Bank” at Mel’s
in the process. “I needed one
more strike in the last game to
win the “break the bank” pot,
however I left a stone 8.”
Before his two 800 series’
the closest Drewitt ever came
to an 800 were a few high 700
series, but he never felt like
he was close to shooting an
800. That is until his Tuesday
afternoon senior’s league at
Mel’s. “I just have a lot of fun
in that league and I was really
relaxed. Then to shoot another
one during the Thursday Thunder
league was quite the feat.
I just felt good and I had one
of my teammates comment on
how I just seemed to be in the
zone, relaxed and comfortable,”
said Drewitt.
Bob was in disbelief from
the accomplishments. “I am
still in shock, but I’m just so
excited. And Mel’s is such
a great place, I love bowling
8th New Mexico Open
Year’s biggest worth $40,575/
record $7,500 to winner
Aiming for “World Bowling Tour” berth in 2012
Rio Rancho, NM — The
8th New Mexico Open, to be
held at Tenpins & More in Rio
Rancho August 15-21, 2011
will be one of the southwest’s
biggest and richest bowling
tournaments, with cash prizes
and awards totaling more
than $40,575; this in addition
to another $6,000 or more in
various side events during the
week.
“Our sponsors have supported
us well, in spite of the weak
economy, and we’re gearing up
to accommodate 192 bowlers by
adding a new qualifying squad
on the Friday”, said tournament
director, Steve Mackie.
“And the entry fee is still
only $200”, he added.
The field will include
defending champion, Andrew
Cain of Scottsdale AZ, as well
as all other prior winners
including Chris Klerk AZ, John
Young NM, David Haynes NV,
Mark French CA and Shawn
Lee CO, all still active tournament
players.
Since the event started in
2004, a total of 177 different
bowlers have shared over
$169,000 in prize-money with
ten bowlers having won at least
$4,395.
there.” In fact, Drewitt bowls
three leagues at Mel’s. His
third league is the Tuesday Pot
of Gold league.
Bob ordered a special ring to
go along with his accomplishment.
It will closely match the
ring he wears when he bowls.
“My dad got a very nice 300
game ring for the first 300 he
ever shot. When he passed
away my mom gave me the
ring, however I didn’t wear it
until I shot my first 300. Now
I wear it every time I bowl and
I was wearing it when I shot
both of my 800’s,” he said.
I’m sure his dad would love
to know his special accomplishment
means so much.
And now Bob will have his
own ring to pass down to his
children.
The leading money-winner
is again John Young of Albuquerque,
the winner in 2004
and 2005. He’s at $9,050 after
adding $1,325 for his sixthplace
finish last year.
Rounding out the top ten is
Klerk $8,625, French $7,100,
Cain $6,970, Josh Blanchard
CA $ 6,500, Haynes $6,340,
Mark Van Meter NM $5,862.50,
Lee $ 5,250, Brett Wolfe AZ
$4,775 and Zach Taylor NM
$4,395.
The only bowler to cash
in each of the previous seven
tournaments is Brian Skidmore
of Albuquerque, in eleventh
place all-time on $4,237.50.
Last year, Cain moved
from fifth to take the title,
beating Frank Guccione CO
218-208, Kyle King AZ 225-200,
Blanchard 224-166 and top-seed
former ABC Masters champion,
Wolfe 184-160 for a then-record
$6,750 pay-day.
The tournament features a
traditional format of 25 games
of qualifying and match-play
prior to championship round
matches scheduled for 3:45
p.m. on Sunday, August 21.
The top five at that point
will bowl one-game “sudden
death” elimination matches,
with fifth playing fourth, the
winner then playing third and
so on before challenging the
leader for the title and a record
$7,500 first prize.
Mackie also announced his
hope to obtain a significant
title sponsor for the New
Mexico Open to enable it’s
inclusion in the 2012 World
Bowling Tour calendar. He
said a minimum $ 100,000
prize-fund is the financial
requirement and he is actively
pursuing a major contributor.
Entry forms for this year’s
event can be downloaded from
High Life Classic in early May
of 2010, shortly after earning
a record seventh PBA Player of
the Year crown at the conclusion
of the 2009-10 Lumber
Liquidators PBA Tour season.
After also going on to earn
PBA Senior Rookie of the Year
honors last year, it has been
quite a dry spell for Williams,
however. He experienced the
worst PBA Tour season of his
28-year career in 2010-11 where
his best finish was sixth. It
ended a record streak of 17
seasons with at least one Tour
win.
“I think the hard work
I’ve put in the past couple of
months has really paid off,”
said the all-time leader in PBA
Tour wins with 47. “I’m feeling
very comfortable being able to
make the adjustments I need
to make and just bowling very
well in general. You’re going to
have your good times and bad
times but I’m very encouraged
and confident going forward
from here.”
Williams’ previous best Senior
Tour finishes this season
were second in the Sun Bowl
In the Villages and third in the
Senior Don Carter Open.
In the semifinals, Mohr
defeated Hall of Famer and
four-time Senior Player of the
Year Tom Baker of King, N.C.,
206-174, to advance to the
championship match and Williams
defeated Harry Sullins of
Chesterfield Township, Mich.,
238-192.
Williams is looking forward
to the PBA Senior U.S. Open
presented by the Suncoast June
12-17 at the Suncoast Bowling
Center in Las Vegas, which is
the next Senior Tour stop.
“I wish it was next week,”
Williams said of the U.S. Open.
“But, it gives me a couple
weeks to get back to work on
my game and relax a little bit.”
the double elimination doubles
said Johnson. “You seem to try
harder when others are counting
on you to bowl well, plus
I’m weird because I always
want the 10th frame.”
“It’s one of those mindsets
where it doesn’t matter how
much you were down, because
with the scores fairly low, you
could shoot a good number one
game and make it up quickly,”
added Fleming.
Cowtown is working hard
to make the Red River Doubles
a popular yearly event again
in North Texas, and will make
it an annual late spring/early
summer weekend event.
“Definitely going to hold
it on a Saturday and Sunday
next year to give more people
a chance to get into town and
bowl,” said Johnson, Cowtown
manager. “Hopefully people
will not want to bowl on easy
conditions all the time and
come try this out, it’s fun to
both participate and watch.”
As far as this year’s event,
both Johnson and tournament
director Jamie Brooks
realize it was a tough draw on
Mother’s Day weekend, as well
as Kentucky Derby Day, and
will look to a more suitable
weekend in the future to draw
a larger field.
“Tony (Franklin), just do
what I did and go to Lone Star
Friday and place your bets
through the drive-thru, and
then you can come bowl,”
Johnson joked about Bowling
News Publisher Tony Franklin
and his annual Kentucky Derby
Day trip to Lone Star Park.
The Red River Doubles is
more than just a tournament
to bowl against other competitors
and try and make some
money, it’s a true challenge of a
bowler’s abilities to make some
of the best shots they can on
some of the toughest conditions
they will ever encounter as a
bowler.
“The biggest thing I love
about the condition and format
is that spare shooting is a premium,”
Fleming said. “I tend to
look at myself highly as a spare
shooter, and it gives me a small
advantage, if there is such a
thing on these conditions.”
Welcome to another funfilled
installment of “Loving
Left-Handedness”, an informative
and hopefully entertaining
look at life from a left-handers
perspective, written by lefties,
especially for lefties (and those
of you who aren’t fortunate
enough to be one).
I will start this week’s
column off with a giant
THANK YOU to all of you who
took the time to write, tweet,
call and threaten, err compliment,
me in person over the
last few weeks (just kidding,
sorta); you are my inspiration
to continue carrying lefty’s
suffrage in these pages. But
more on all that later…
I had some topics lined up
that I really wanted to jump
into this week but something
occurred that simply could
not be passed up without
commentary.
Congratulations to the
Turbo 2-N-1 Grips Team #1
out of Wisconsin for taking
the Regular Team lead at the
USBC Open Championships in
Reno, NV on May 21st. Mike
Shady, led the scoring with a
772 series, and was followed
by Gail Myers Jr. 741, Jeff
Richgels 685, Marc McDowell
(former West Texas A&M star)
with 655, and Steve Richter
620. The group took the lead in
record fashion, shooting 1,281
their last game.
Normally this would never
be a story I would cover…after
all, how does a piece on ten
righties (with their companion
team) dominating the USBC
team event really apply to our
love of left-handedness? Well
as fellow lefty Justin Bieber
croons (yeah I went there),
“Never say never!”
Richgels, Turbo 2-N-1 Grips’
Captain was quoted on Bowl.
com as saying “all ten bowlers
enter the event with a team
strategy in mind and work
together for three games as the
lanes transition,” he continued
on to state, “you need ten
guys to win this tournament…
you’ve got to have all ten guys
out there working together. ..it
truly is a team effort, and we
needed everyone.”
When I watched the video
of this group they were literally
Loving Left-
Handedness
By Aaron Walsh, Guest Columnist
carbon copies of each other’s
game, down to ball surface and
launch angle, they were like
a traveling group of kinetic
artists.
Some of you might use adjectives
like brilliant, strategic,
smart, and clever to describe
their planning, and I would
agree with you. But allow me
to play Devil’s advocate for a
second…imagine a team of ten
left handed bowlers doing the
same thing, it would probably
be considered scandalous by
the masses.
I think the adjectives
would be more like sneaky,
underhanded (no pun intended),
tricky, and dastardly
to describe a few. Why is it
that when our right handed
counterparts do something
legendary it is greatness and
when a left hander does it we
are forced to deal with a group
of naysayers who immediately
minimize the achievement to
“easy on the left?” One word
my friends…BIAS.
Since the beginning of time
the left-hander has been kicked
like the runt of the litter, the
Jeffery Cathey claimed highseries
honors last week at Red
Bird Lanes with a free-wheeling
276-264-231 = 771 Colts & Fillies
league play.
Angie Griffith led the
215-191-224 = 630 Sunday Night
Mix set.
HONOR ROLL
202-580, Mark Peet 237-668, Tom
Pulis 237-648, Tim Kramer 180-446,
John Mock was definitely on
target last week at Rowlett Bowl-a-
Rama as he dominated scoring with
a superb 268-247-238 = 753 Sunday
Mixers league performance.
Ashley Adams headed the
ladies’ leader board with a stately
203-214-209 = 626 Wednesday
Nite Owls set.
Tony Boyd’s award-winning
12-bagger garnered high-game
honors.
HONOR ROLL
shunned one, and treated like
an overall disappointment to
society.
Throughout history lefty intolerance
has run high, and as
a result of this lefty prejudice,
even the bowling world has
been set up for right-handers.
Although many believe
left-handed bias is the result
of living in a ninety percent
right-handed world, there may
be an underlying truth that has
haunted right-handers for ages,
the truth that has powered the
bias throughout history.
The irrational fear that
lefties have an advantage over
right-handers. Well let me tell
everyone here once and for
all, this is totally bogus, and
when my 2012 group of fellow
right-brainers take the lanes
at USBC’s together for the first
time we certainly will have no
chance to win, but man will
it be AWESOME! I’m taking
applications now.
comments I welcome them via
In closing, our fun fact of
the week comes from “The
Left-Hander’s Calendar.”
It tells us that the brain is
“cross-wired” so that the left
hemisphere controls the right
handed side of the body and
vice-versa and hand dominance
is connected with brain
Training Games Part IV
Here are two games to hone
your skills and improve your
versatility. The last one is my
favorite. If you have other
games you use, please share
them with me at Strikeability.
Pin Talk II
This is way cool! Imagine.
Rewards for missing! This is
an exercise best done after you
have mastered the Pin Talk
training exercise.
After doing Pin Talk enough
times that you’re really confident
you see and understand
the movement of each of the
pins you were to watch, miss
on purpose. Don’t tell me you
can’t. You’ve missed before,
just not on purpose. You know
what leaves a 2 pin. Move
inside enough to be light and
leave one. Keep moving and
changing angles and rotation
and speeds until you leave the
2. Spare it and do it again.
Move more and/or change
something else so that you
hit differently and leave the
bucket. Spare it and do it again.
Isn’t this amazing? Isn’t it just
incredible how far off you have
to be to leave this stuff?
Now try hitting 3 pin heavy.
Based on what you learned
about how to be light in the
pocket and leave a 2 pin or
bucket, opposite or exaggerated
moves should hit the 3 pin in
the face. Shoot what you leave
and leave it again.
Next leave the 3-10 or the
3-6-10. Have you ever wondered
what takes the 6 pin out
of the 3-6-10 and leaves the
3-10? It’s the headpin in my
experience. You’ve left the 3-10
or 3-6-10 many times in your
bowling career. Leaving it on
purpose almost seems impossible.
You know it’s not since
you’ve done it, but wow, what
a strange leave. Anyway, fool
around and see if you can leave
it. Spare it. Leave it again.
Now move to be flush in the
pocket. Shouldn’t be a problem.
You’ve been all around the
pocket with this game. Don’t
forget to shoot every spare
you leave, never reracking or
discounting them. This is a
supremely wonderful exercise
for accuracy and understanding
pinfall.
A Different 300
This is a truly challenging
game I learned from Team USA
player, John Eiss. It can be
played alone, with a friend, or
a whole wad of folks. It’s a very
unique way to shoot 300!
There are ten frames in
a game. There are different
goals, different point values,
and a different number of shots
allowed for each frame. The
‘goal’ is the number of pins
you need to knock down in the
shots allowed for that frame
Although I’m not a mom,
I do have four nephews that
I love dearly. My sister and
her family live in Little Rock,
so I don’t get to see her two
kids very often. The other two
nephews, my brother’s kids,
live five minutes away so I see
them weekly.
I sometimes get volunteered
to help out with carpool
duties and it amazes me how
dedicated these kids are. The
oldest one, Patrick, started
doing karate this year. He goes
to the dojo four nights a week
for an hour to learn new skills.
He has advanced from a white
belt in the beginning to yellow,
and is now an orange belt. He
performs the moves with so
much intensity and he really
seems to love it.
Patrick’s younger brother,
Evan, is involved in competitive
gymnastics. He is only
eight years old and trains in
the gym for 3.5 hours, four
days a week. Most of Evan’s
days include school, snack,
gym, dinner, bath, and bed.
There isn’t much time for
anything else. They have meets
and compete for medals several
times a month. You wouldn’t
believe all of the tumbles,
twists, and skills he can do
on the floor, bars, rings, and
pommel horse at such a young
age. Not to mention, the boy
can show off 6-pack abs.
They have both played
other sports including baseball
and football thru the YMCA.
All of these sports require a
couple of nights during the
week for practice and games on
Saturday. It got me thinking,
bowling really seems to be
the only activity for kids, that
doesn’t involve team practice
and coaching outside of their
Saturday morning competition.
I was fortunate to grow up
in a family owned bowling
center, Starr Bowl in Muskogee,
OK. Blake was just a toddler at
the time, but his family cared
a lot about the youth bowling
in their center. I ran into Blake
Starr a couple of years ago and
he has grown up to be a very
good bowler himself and was
bowling collegiately at that
time.
We used to go to Starr Bowl
a couple times a week after
school to learn and practice.
Hal Sands worked part time
there and his daughter, Whitney,
was on the same team
with my brother and me. We
all went to school together so
Hal would pick us up and take
us bowling. I credit him for
teaching me a solid, simple
foundation that has helped me
evolve into the bowler I am
today.
I started looking into it
and there is new hope on the
horizon for youth bowling.
Chad Murphy, Director of
Youth Development for the IBC,
has a vision for youth leagues
that involves a format similar
to other youth sports. Kids are
split into four-member teams
according to their ability. Each
team has a volunteer coach and
weekly practice before competing
in their league competition.
The Youth Education
Services (YES) Fund has been
new youth concept with great
success. Kids are increasing
their averages and having more
fun in the more team oriented
atmosphere. Hopefully centers
will see the potential in this
new youth concept and try
to implement this structure
into their fall youth programs.
Anything that can be done
to help kids learn and love to
bowl will help grow the sport
for the future.
accomplishment. Next on the
We all know the weather
in Texas can be crazy and this
week was no exception.
Currently I’m in the process
of emptying out our garage as
it’s in no way, shape, or form
prepared to have a car parked
in it.
However, it is amazing
what you can accomplish when
dollar signs are dancing in
your head at how much your
insurance deductible is going
to be.
So after I heard the report
that severe weather was headed
my way in the form of golf ball
size hail I ran into the garage
and began playing Jenga with
every box, board, and can in
there.
Somehow in a matter of
minutes, Nikki and I had
accomplished a small path that
allowed me to pull my car in
the garage, and a small feeling
of victory that I just saved
myself a $500 deductible.
Shortly thereafter we started
hearing clanking sounds on
the windows and it continued
to get louder and louder until
I looked outside and thought
they had moved the driving
range at The Colonial to my
front yard.
The hail stones were indeed
golf ball size and plentiful. My
first thought when I saw how
much hail was out there, was
that I would be getting a call
from Kelly Ray at any moment
saying “I got dibs on fixing
your roof”!
However, this was just the
beginning as the TV stations
were reporting tornadoes
directly coming our way. It’s
never fun when the weatherman
starts zooming in on the
map at the closest intersection
to your home and saying take
cover.
Nonetheless operation
“tornado drill” went into effect
and I ran into the garage and
yanked out an old mattress and
dragged it into the bathroom.
As I was preparing for cover
I noticed the dogs were going
crazy. I’ve always heard that
dogs’ can sense impending
danger and that made me think
it was coming our way even
more.
That is until I realized that
Nikki had pulled their leashes
off the shelf, which to the dogs
means that we are going for
a walk. I asked her why she
was putting leashes on them
and she said in case the house
comes down we will already
have leashes on them.
I suppose that sounds as
logical as me hiding in a
bathtub from a tornado with
an old mattress on my head to
keep me safe.
As you know, our dogs have
no discipline and they’re even
worse with leashes on, so luckily
the storm passed quickly
and everyone was safe.
We then went outside to
watch the storm clouds which
were absolutely an amazing
sight. As a matter of fact I’ve
never seen that many people at
one time out of their houses on
my street. It was a very strange
evening.
This time of the year is
bittersweet as far as league
bowling goes.
The end of fall leagues
are upon us and playoffs and
league championships are
being decided.
The only league I bowl in is
the Showplace Masters league
on Thursday nights at AMF
Showplace-Euless.
Last year our Ballard’s
Bowling Solution team came
out victorious, but this year
BBS came up short and will
not be defending our title. The
guys I bowled with were stellar
again this year as 3 of them
were in the top 10 for average.
Chris Hibbitts (aka Southwest
Jesus) finished second to none
other than “The King” Ron
Williams for high league average
with a 237 average.
Personally for me it was a
difficult league year and with
the exception of a couple of
weeks I should probably give
up my professional status. I
was terrible pretty much the
entire year and if bowling was
like baseball or football then I
would be like Brett Favre and
retiring.
I will be taking the summer
off, but I’m ready to start my
new scratch trio league in the
fall with a 650 average cap.
So start getting your teams
Newell Wins PBA Regional
Players Championship- East Title
ALLEN PARK, Mich. – Scott
Newell of Deland, Fla., defeated
Michael Clark Jr. of Cleveland,
Ohio, 227-180, to win the
Professional Bowlers Association
Regional Players Championship-
East at Thunderbowl
Lanes Monday.
The win earned Newell
$6,000, an “elite” berth in
the 2012 PBA Tournament
of Champions and his third
career title as a PBA regional
competitor. Newell entered the
32-player single-elimination
match play finals as the No.
27 qualifier. He slipped past
Nathan Bohr of Wichita, Kan.,
4-3, in the best-of-seven- game
opening round; swept Jim
Tomek Jr. of Camp Hill, Pa.,
3-0, in the best-of-five Round of
16, and then defeated Chicago’s
Jason Wojnar, 2-0, in the bestof-three
Round of 8 to reach
the semifinal round where he
eliminated Jeff Hicks of Allen
Park, Mich., 189-159, in a onegame
match.
Newell, 28, hopes his
Regional Players Championship
is a turning point in an up-anddown
career. In 2010, he had
a streak of eight consecutive
PBA South Region tournaments
where he finished in the top 10,
but over the next 16 regional
and national tournaments, he
didn’t finish in the top 10 once.
“I’ve made a lot of changes
to my game,” he said. “I’ve
really worked hard at it, mostly
through competition because
I need to see the result in
competition to know if what
I’m doing is actually working.
I’ve been bowling real well in
NATION TIES
for the second game as well.
After having thrown 23 strikes,
she now needed one more in
the twelfth frame to shoot
back-to-back 300’s. She let the
ball go and left a light 7-pin.
The crowd groaned with disappointment
as the 7-pin stood
and we all agreed that the pin
“could have fallen”. How many
times have we said that to
ourselves?
It was still an accomplishment,
but Stefanie wasn’t done
yet. After shooting 599 for the
first two games, Nation didn’t
want to lose focus and not
finish the set.
She started the third game
with a strike followed by a 10
pin and she thought to herself,
“here we go, I’m going to
struggle to shoot 200.”
She regrouped and threw
the next eight shots perfectly
with the chance to shoot 280
leading into the 11th frame.
Everyone was behind her as
she threw the eleventh ball. It
looked good off her hand, but
it went high and left the 4-7-10
split. After knocking down two
more pins, she unknowingly
non-PBA events recently, so
I felt good coming into this
event.
“I kind of knew that one
of these days there was going
to be a breakthrough, and
hopefully things will go well
from here.”
Newell has aspirations of
succeeding on the PBA National
Tour, but he also knows
what he’s up against.
“Bowling on the national
tour is so much different,” he
said. “Those guys are so good,
and what they do to the lane
conditions is amazing. But you
either figure it out or you go
home, and I’m not ready to go
home yet.”
The women’s state record
bowler Anne Marie Duggan,
since 1993 when she bowled
the LPBT Alamo Café Southwest
Region Invitational at Don
Carter’s All Star Lanes West in
Dallas, TX.
Struggling for a few games,
Duggan’s husband suggested
she move out to the gutter and
see if she could get something
going. After she threw one ball
in the gutter, she moved to a
new pair and found her spot.
Duggan reeled off games of
300-300-265 for her 865 series,
she was using a Teal Rhino
Pro, and no, she didn’t win the
regional.
Other Texas ladies have
come close to the record score.
Carolyn Dorin-Ballard logged
an 855 series at BRC Watauga
SMART Scholarship
Fund releases
independent audit
ARLINGTON — Directors of
the SMART Bowling Scholarship
Funding Corporation
released new financial reports
demonstrating stability and
a record asset base for the
program dedicated to protecting
youth scholarship monies.
The SMART Corporation
is a financially and legally
independent entity formed
last year by the United States
Bowling Congress. The SMART
Corporation has three directors
on the board: Wally Hall, Steve
Moehrle and Sandy Hansell.
All three hold graduate degrees
in business, finance or law and
have decades of experience in
the bowling industry. “These
reports should assure everyone
that all funds in SMART
have been and will continue
to be handled and protected
properly,” said Hall, SMART
Corporation Board Chairman.
“The financial statements as
of April 30 show SMART has
funds in excess of liabilities. In
other words, every scholarship
dollar is safe and ready when
needed.” One of the first steps
taken by the new Board of
Directors was to commission
an independent audit of SMART
conducted by the certified
public accounting firm, Clifton
Gunderson. That comprehensive
audit showed all SMART
funds were accounted for and
Tyler USBC holds 2nd Annual
Adult/Youth Tournament
On Saturday May 15, 2011
the Greater Tyler USBC held
its 2nd Annual Adult Youth
Tournament at Green Acres
Bowl in Tyler, Texas.
Youth and adults competed
in team and doubles events.
Teams consisted of two youth
and two adult bowlers, and
doubles consisted of one youth
and one adult.
In the team event the youth
were led by Cooper Kennington
with a 691 scratch series,
200, 288, 203 and Austin
Farnsworth with a 652 scratch
series, 212, 220, 220.
The first place team was
youth bowlers Austin Farnsworth,
Evan Owens and adult
bowlers Earl Farnsworth and
Sandra Farnsworth with a
scratch score of 2149.
The second place team was
handled properly by USBC prior
to the formation of the SMART
Corporation. In an effort to
provide greater transparency,
the SMART Board plans to
publish quarterly statements
for the SMART Fund. The
first statement as of April 30
shows SMART with greater
assets than liabilities. “The
SMART Board is honored to
be a trusted custodian of such
a financially strong program,”
Hall said. “Our next step will
be selecting a top investment
advisory firm to assist the
Board with its investment
activities. Our primary role is
to protect children’s scholarship
funds, but we also need to
grow the fund with appropriately
balanced and responsible
investments.” Providing yet
youth bowlers Cooper Kennington,
Jeremy Fabinski, and
adult bowlers Jerry Kennington
and Todd Lange with a scratch
score of 2261.
In the doubles event the
youth were led by Austin
Farnsworth who posted a 593
scratch series, 208, 182, 203,
and Kevin Terry with a 493
scratch series, 168, 210, 115.
The doubles event was won
by the team of Austin Farnsworth
and Earl Farnsworth
with an 1195 scratch series.
Second place went to youth
bowler William Barber and
adult bowler Rob Barber who
posted an 850 scratch series.
All prize money in this
tournament went to the Youth
bowler’s SMART fund with
USBC.
another layer of security and
insurance for the SMART Fund,
USBC has guaranteed to fund
up to $2 million for SMART
distributions in the extraordinary
situation of scholarship
requests exceeding assets. The
SMART program continues to
be the only bowling scholarship
management program
providing full protection of
a student-athlete’s eligibility
status. The newly released
financial statements can be
Hamilton, Barnes capture Intercollegiate
Singles Championships titles
EULESS, Texas – Brittni
Hamilton of Vanderbilt and
Kyle Barnes of Middle Tennessee
claimed the titles at the
2011 United States Bowling
Congress Intercollegiate Singles
Championships on Tuesday at
AMF Euless Lanes.
Hamilton, the top seed after
Monday’s qualifying, swept
Kara Bunting of Central Florida
in the women’s title match.
Hamilton earned a bye into the
third round and lost only one
game in the best-of-five match-
play format, going 9-1 en route
to the title.
“I was just really lined up
both days,” said Hamilton, a
Team USA and Junior Team
USA member. “I was playing a
different part of the lane than
pretty much everybody else. It
just really worked for me. I felt
comfortable in there.”
Hamilton won the 2010
USBC Junior Gold Championships
and helped her team to a
runner-up finish at the NCAA
Women’s Bowling Championships
this season.
“It means a lot, representing
Vanderbilt, and I know it will
mean a lot to them, too,” Hamilton
said of winning the ISC
title. “To start off my summer
like this is pretty awesome.”
Barnes, the No. 7 qualifier,
presents the 4th annual
Each team needs at least
2 players with a military background
and 2 guests.
Singles titlists Kyle Barnes of Middle Tennessee and Brittni Hamilton
of Vanderbilt.
had a bye into the second
round and also went 9-1 in his
first three matches to reach
the title match against Jacob
Kent of Robert Morris-Illinois.
Barnes needed a strike on his
first ball in the final frame of
the deciding game and got it
for the 3-2 victory.
“When I left the 10 pin and
that messenger came rolling
across, the only thing I was
hoping was that the pin in
front of it didn’t stop it,” Barnes
said. “But it hit it and knocked
it right over and that was quite
possibly the greatest feeling in
the world.”
Barnes, who will graduate
in December, did not bowl
collegiately this season. A firstteam
All-American at Pikeville
in 2008, he had tried to qualify
for the ISC in the past. So when
friends from Vanderbilt said
they were going to sectional
qualifying, he decided to take
a shot.
“I had one year left to do
it and thought I might as well
use it,” Barnes said. “The next
schools that earn a spot into the National tournament, and we had a great time
being one of the elite teams for a week. The Lady Buffs had a few mistakes during
qualifying so by finishing low in qualifying we were matched up against McKendree
the number 2 seed our first match. We took Mckendree to 6 games in a 7 game
match but Mckendree ended up on top, so we are now in the loser’s bracket where
we are bowling Adelphi. Another heart breaking loss was in store for the Lady
Buffs, we took Adelphi to 6 games in a 7 game match and with a blink of an eye
our run for a National Championship was over. Overall it was a great season with
some highs and lows but more importantly valuable experience was earned for
a young Lady Buff team. Now we are looking for the next season to start and
working our way back to Nationals in Lincoln Nebraska for next year.
West Texas has several young stars coming in the fall of 2011, which I’m sure
they will contribute tremendously throughout
the season. Most are coming from all
parts of Texas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and
Arkansas. Next month I will have a more
complete list of the freshmen coming in and
where they are from. Until next time…..
Wichita’s first-family of
bowling has another star in the
making. Hollyann Johansen,
daughter of Tina Jensen-Long,
yes those Jensen’s, has been
tearing up the lanes this year.
Hollyann may be only 14 years
old, but has been bowling since
she could walk, because that’s
what this family does, and they
do it well.
Johansen is a freshman at
Bishop Carroll High School,
but just finished off a season
like a seasoned vet. She won
four major titles in the last
few months, Wichita city
All-Events, the Greater Wichita
Athletic League singles title,
the Kansas 5A South Regional
singles title, and the Kansas 5A
State singles title. That’s quite a
little run!
As stated she has been
bowling forever, since she was
two and half to be exact. It
was an easy sport for her to get
involved in as her mom, aunt,
uncle’s, and grandparents are
all very accomplished bowlers.
She grew up bowling at Rose
Bowl West, the center owned
by her grandparents and modeled
her game after her mother.
“I always liked watching her
bowl, and people tell me that
we throw it the same, plus she
coached me in my Saturday
leagues,” she said.
Johansen is averaging
around 210, with a high game
of 289. She says that she hasn’t
quite passed her mom’s skill
level yet, but she is getting
close. Not sure that mom would
agree with that, as the Jensen
clan is not afraid to take it to
the lanes to settle the score.
The 5A Regional competition
was held at Seneca Bowl
in Wichita, and is comprised
of all of the 1A-5A High School
bowling teams from that region
of Kansas. The top two teams
plus the top 20 individuals ad-
THE BOWLING NEWS | Thursday, June 2, 2011 | Page 17
Johansen wins Kansas State
Title and a bit more
vance to the State Finals, held
at Northrock Lanes on March
3rd, also in Wichita. Johansen’s
team also advanced to the state
finals, “we have a lot of good
people on our team, and it was
really fun,” she said.
At state, the Bishop Carroll
girl’s team again performed
well, finishing in third place,
but Hollyann had a true
breakout performance. She
posted her all-time high series
of 756, to capture the 5A State
High School Girls Singles title,
by a whopping 73 pins over
second place. “It was a good
time to have my high series,”
she said in the under-statement
of the year.
“State was the most fun
event because I got meet a lot
more people, and there were a
lot more people watching the
tournament. Plus you got to
compete with the best in the
state,” Johansen said.
You might think that a
freshman competing against
juniors and seniors would be
intimidating, but not when
sportsmanship is more important
than competition. “I woke
up that morning and I wasn’t
nervous like I normally am for
a big tournament. There was
a girl I was bowling with that
was getting a little frustrated
and down on herself so I was
actually more focused on trying
to help her out than I was
my own game. I stayed calm
and it seems like I bowl better
when I’m not paying attention
to what I am doing,” Hollyann
said.
As for how it felt to win the
tournament, “it’s really hard
to describe, it was shocking
really. I knew I was doing
well but there so many other
people out there cheering, that
I figured other bowlers were
doing well too,” she said. “My
mom was happy and shocked
too.”
Brunswick signs with
Mini-Eliminator
Las Vegas, NV — Pinacle
Events is pleased to announce
Brunswick Bowling has agreed
to become the official ball
sponsor of the next two Mini-
Eliminators. At the Summer
2011 Mini-Eliminator, which is
being hosted by Sunset Station
in Las Vegas, Brunswick
Product Specialists will be
giving out the brand new, soon
to be released, C . System High
Performance Ball. Brunswick
will have their full product line
on displayed throughout the
tournament which runs June
26 through July 3.
Brian Graham, Director
of Marketing for Consumer
Products, was thrilled to
partner with The Mini. “I used
to bowl the Mini and thought
it was the best megabuck event
in Las Vegas. I believe Brunswick
can offer all entrants
the best possible experience
while at Sunset Station. We
look forward to working with
the Mini-Eliminator staff and
meeting all of the bowlers.”
Brunswick will be running
practice lanes all week where
bowlers can try out the latest
Brunswick equipment. This
includes the latest, soon to be
released, C System which has
gotten rave reviews even before
it is available to the public.
Brunswick will also be hosting
a free “bowler appreciation”
party to celebrate the new ball
release and the Mini-Eliminator
Hollyann Johansen
Since her mother Tina is
such an accomplished bowler
she was able to handle watching
the victory with ease,
right? “I was a nervous mother.
She was able to stay cool, and
she generally tries to figure
things out for herself. She probably
gets more frustrated at me
when I am trying to help her
than anything,” said Tina.
Johansen gets a good
portion of her coaching
from Developmental leagues
where Justin Hromek and
Bret Bartman have provided
instrumental insight. However,
sometimes mother still knows
best, “I’m trying to teach her to
swing the ball a little bit. She
is a down and in player and
throws it pretty hard, we need
to show her how to move left
and open it up,” said Tina.
As for future aspirations,
Hollyann is still trying to
decide. It will depend on what
she wants to study, and if the
college has a bowling program.
For now she is just enjoying
the great run.
sponsorship.
The Mini-Eliminator is a
3-game qualifying tournament
by division. There are
Good news…Bad news…
Interstate closes, Thompson moves
By Don Wright, Columnist
Everyone hopes that good
news outweighs bad news. I’ll
let you be the judge.
The bad news is we lost another
bowling center. Interstate
Lanes in Round Rock is closed.
I tried calling there and the
phones have been disconnected
and it marks the second center
to fall in just a few years.
Action World in Temple burned
down a few years ago and as of
this date has not been replaced,
nor are there any indications
there will be a center there
in the near future. The loss
of Action World also included
the loss of the entire Temple
Bowling Association and their
members have merged with
the Greater Killeen-Fort Hood
Bowling Association. Interstate
Lanes was part of the Austin
Bowling Association so the
members won’t lose out on
anything with several other
centers in the city of Austin
and Georgetown.
The loss of Interstate Lanes
KILLEEN – Bryce Ellison,
from the Golden Agers league,
racked up a rousing 792 series to
earn the top spot on the honor roll
last month at Hallmark Lanes.
Esther Navarro’s blue ribbon
717 performance in the Hit &
Miss circuit action led the ladies
scoring contest.
Rodney Rudnick III captured
high-game honors with an awardwinning
300. Rex Haas took
runner up honors with a 299
solo and Chris Verner added a
296 single.
Jimmy Thompson
was a gain for the Killeen-Fort
Hood area due to the closing of
the Interstate Lanes Pro Shop.
The Pro Shop owner, Jimmy
Thompson will be relocating to
Killeen Bowlerama and expects
to be operational between June
1st and June 15. The 44-year
old, former PBA member will
open his shop under the name
of J.T’s 10 to Win.
Thompson has operated a
pro shop since 1988 starting
KILLEEN – B-Rad Dewald
won high-set honors last month
at Killeen Bowlerama by hopping
his way to 831 numbers in
Commercial action. Dewald came
back in the Rebels league outing
and registered an award-winning
perfecto.
Kiyoko “KK” McDonald
earned fem scoring honors with
a red-hot 758 Commercial set.
Rob Rackley shared highgame
accolades with Dewald as
he also rolled an award-winning
perfecto. John Strickland’s 299
solo took runner-up honors.
Esther Navarro posted a 298
out as a partner with Robert
Lawrence the 1992 U.S. Open
champion. They had the shop
at Highland Lanes from 1988
to 1994 when they moved to
Showplace Lanes until 2006.
From Showplace they took
over the shop at Interstate and
Thompson ultimately bought
out Lawrence and now has full
control.
Thompson, a former PBA
member is an accomplished
bowler having 54 300 games
with 7 of them on the PBA
Tour. He has 14 series of 800
plus, won the PBA Regional
event in 1987 at Oklahoma and
has a World Team Challenge
title to his credit.
Three very serious elbow
surgeries have slowed him
down some and he has relinquished
his PBA card, but still
competes in leagues and local
tournaments.
“I’m looking forward to this
move because I have so many
customers from the Killeen-Fort
Hood area that is just seemed
right. Jim and Jean Maxson
have been very supportive and
we are looking forward to a
long relationship.” he said.
Thompson plans to start
doing some remodeling around
June 1st and expand the shop
which could delay the actual
opening date. He will be taking
Many years ago when I was
a Young American Bowling
Alliance certified coach I spent
a lot of Saturday mornings at
the bowling centers coaching
my kids along with the youth
league bowlers. There were
a lot of parents who coached
their kids and one of them was
a man I had bowled leagues
with for several years. His
name was Gene Shoemaker and
his son was a pretty darn good
bowler.
Unfortunately, we lost Gene
a few years ago, but his son,
Mike went on to prove that the
lessons he received at a very
young age would take him to
the Professional Bowlers Association
and earn him a PBA
Regional title.
Mike, a 1983 Ellison High
School graduate went on to
earn a degree at Texas A&M in
1988. A sales representative for
Maumelle, Arkansas with their
fearless cocker spaniel, Buddy.
During his career Mike has
captured one PBA Regional title
and finished second 13 times.
One of those 13 was during the
Killeen Open.
Mike usually bowled in the
Killeen Open and opened his
parent’s home to several of the
competitors. Thanks to e-mail,
I was able to catch up to him,
interrupt his R&R to Florida,
and got his views on the PBA
Regional program and his
future plans.
DW: Are you doing any
bowling?
MS: Took this year off for
the first time in 38 years. I have
bowled since I was 6 years old
and needed a break.
DW: What are your bowling
plans for the future?
MS: Looking at bowling a
mixed league with my wife
July 16 -17 & 23 - 24, 2011
Entry Deadline: June 11, 2011
4 person teams, doubles & singles
(Any combination of Men or Women)
Handicap 80% from 220
Brackets & Highpots, Optional Scratch Events
Presented by
again next fall. I may start
bowling a few tournaments and
regional’s but no actual plans
yet.
DW: Are you planning to
bowl the Killeen Open?
MS: Not this year. I really
enjoy that tournament but I
won’t enter unless I can compete
at a high level.
DW: What are your
thoughts on the current PBA?
MS: They are obviously trying
very hard to find a formula
that works. It all comes down
to advertising/sponsorships and
until that changes they have
their work cut out.
DW: What changes, if any
would you like to see in the
regional program?
MS: When I bowled the
regional tour in the 1990’s we
had added money for every
event and we bowled for more
prize money than we put up in
entry fees. Now the bowlers are
bowling for their own money
and some of that is taken out in
expenses. Smaller prize funds
and higher expenses allow very
few bowlers to make a profit
under this format. I proposed
an idea in 2003 to increase
sponsorship/prize funds. It fell
on deaf ears - as the major focus
then and now still seems to be
the National Tour.
DW: Who do you consider
your toughest opponent?
MS: This is an easy one.
Mike Scroggins. I have finished
second to him at least 6 times
probably more as I try to forget.
There were tournaments where
I was 200 ahead of third place
but 200 pins behind Scroggs. I
wish he had spent more time
on tour in the 1990’s. I would
probably have a few more titles
and few less gray hairs.
DW: What is your most
memorable time while on the
regional tour?
MS: Traveling and spending
time with friends. Getting to
compete against some of the
toughest bowlers in the world
and then hanging out with
them, going to dinner, putt putt,
movies etc. Lifetime friendships
and some really good people. A
close second would be when I
won my title. My last 4 matches
were against Williams, Williams,
Williams and Williams. I
bowled Ron Williams (this was
when he was the King on the
King of the Hill tournaments
on the Tour), Derek Williams,
Mark Williams and then Ron
Williams for the title in position
round. Glad Walter Ray wasn’t
there, not sure I could take
down 5 Williams’.
DW: There are many
reasons that regional players
don’t opt for the PBA Tour.
C lark's Promotions L.L.C.
Should there be a Hall of Fame
for Regional players?
MS: That is actually a great
idea. We have guys in our
region that were great bowlers
over the years that never really
tried the tour. Many had family
commitments, job commitments
or just didn’t like the lifestyle
of the tour. These guys would
travel all over the Southwest
and compete at a very high
level. It’s a shame they don’t get
recognition for this. Guys like
David Anthony, Tony Franklin,
Mike Austin, Jimmy Thompson,
Sean Swanson ( I could go
on for a while) were all great
regional pro’s that for whatever
reason didn’t tour much and I
believe all of them would have
had pretty good success on the
National tour. It would be nice
to see these guys that put a lot
into the regional tour get some
recognition.
DW: Anything you wish to
add?
MS: My hat goes off to the
guys that compete regularly in
the regional program these days.
The expenses are higher and
the prize funds are lower than
any time I can remember since
I started bowling PBA events
in the 1980’s. These guys do it
because they love the game and
love the competition. I don’t
