In any business setting, involving
himself on.
Du is the
Brents, Branagan and Maldonado
win 3rd Annual Vicki Rios
Memorial Trio Tournament.
By Tyson Branagan
Staff Writer
On January 15th, 2011,
bowlers from all over the
south and southwest gathered
at Tangi Lanes in Hammond,
Louisiana for some good
competition, fun, and most
importantly, an annual tribute
to the late Vicki Rios. The
tournament, hosted yearly
by Lee Tyrney in his 24-lane
center and operated by Joey
Amadeo, fills each year with
a waiting list to get in for the
opportunity to not only bowl
for some money, but for the
opportunity to win in honor of
Vicki.
Once again this year, the
tournament quickly filled at
24 teams, but this year was
different than the previous
two, as Vicki’s family made
the trip together for the first
time to attend the tournament
in remembering their beloved
daughter and sister, and take in
some great bowling.
“It was an honor to get to
meet Vicki’s family,” tournament
director Joey Amadeo
said. “I am so pleased they
were able to make the trip.”
The day got started with the
Calcutta, in which $415 was
raised for the scholarship fund in
Rios’ name, and then the action
got started soon after, with each
team bowling 6 games of match
play qualifying, with 20 bonus
pins for each individual win, and
40 bonus pins for a team victory.
After 6 games, the field was cut
to the top six teams, with the
top two qualifiers receiving a
1-round bye in the finals.
The team of Elizabeth
Brents, Tyson Branagan and
Shawn Maldonado, all of Texas
got out to an early lead behind
a 300 by Branagan out of the
gate en route to an 871 start
with bonus pins. It was an
early indication of how high
the scores would be as three
teams cracked the 800 mark in
game one. By the end of the
6 games of qualifying, some
of the highest scores in the
tournaments short history were
posted, with Brents, Branagan
and Maldonado leading the
way at plus 1224. The team of
Leslie Engeron, Kenny Winstead
and Brian Bodenhemier
earned the other bye in the
finals by posting a score of
plus 997, seven pins clear of
3rd qualifier Kristin Warzinski,
Xeno Garcia and Eric Traylor.
Rounding out the qualifiers
were the inaugural winning
team of April Ellis, Scott
Monteleone and Shaun Thonn
in 4th, Karyn Weschler, Byron
Lau and Nicky McClantoc in
5th, and Brandy Silva, Nathan
Vanputten and Mark Busscher
earning the 6th and final cash
spot. Brents led the entire field
individually with a 1463 6game
total, an average 243.83,
proving that the women do, in
FOUNDED AND PUBLISHED BY JOE GENNARO FROM 1956-2009
fact, fuel this great event.
In the finals, Silva, Vanputten
and Busscher defeated
Warzinski, Garcia and Traylor
to advance while Ellis, Monteleone
and Thonn knocked off
Weschler, Lau and McClantoc.
In the semifinals, Brents,
Branagan and Maldonado
defeated Silva, Vanputten and
Busscher in a close struggle of
a match on a tough pair, relatively
speaking, to earn their
second straight finals appearance
after a 2nd place finish a
year ago. In the other semifinal
match, Ellis, Monteleone
and Thonn defeated Engeron,
Winstead and Bodenheimer to
give them the opportunity to
bowl for their second title.
In the title match, just like
each year before, the match
contained all the excitement
anyone could ask for, and once
again, came down to the 10th
frame and the final bowler
needing to strike to secure
the victory. In a match full of
strikes, Maldonado got up for
his 10th frame after needing to
strike his first ball of the 10th
to secure the win, and much
like the previous nine frames,
threw another perfect strike,
and would throw two more just
like it to finish off a perfect
300, and earn their team $2700
for the win, plus Calcutta
winnings.
“They dominated the field,
and finished it off by getting
the win,” said Amadeo, “and
in true Vicki fashion, it was
dramatic.”
“Shawn shot 300 in the final
to help his team to a 794 scratch
score, just enough to beat the
760 put up by their opponents,”
he added. “It was great to watch
and be a part of.”
“It felt great to win,” said
Brents. “We came so close
last year and we work so well
together, it was great to finish
it off this time.”
“I didn’t know Vicki that
well, but everyone down there
is so friendly and fun to be
around that it just shows the
type of person she was to have
all these friends come together
in memory of her,” she added.
Ellis, Monetleone and
Thonn earned $1800 plus
Calcutta for second. 3rd and
4th places earned $1050 plus
Calcutta each, while 5th and
6th took home $690 each to
round out the day.
A tournament is the brain
child of Rios along with
Amadeo and Leisha Murr. It’s
a fantastic event in honor of a
great person and bowler, and a
friend to all that she met. As
usual, it was a great success,
but more than that, it was a
great time by all in attendance,
with some great and entertaining
bowling to go along.

Our 54th Year
Danny Graf
This week’s high man is
Danny Graf with a 200-258-268
for an 826 series in the Denim
& Duds league at Brunswick
Zone Watauga. This was
Danny’s first 800 series and he
said it was indescribable to finally
shoot an 800, a real sense
of relief and accomplishment.
Where were you born? I
was born in Dallas, we moved
around a little bit when I was
younger, but we ended back up
in the DFW area.
What ball did you throw?
I used a Mission which had
been a great ball for me, but
I haven’t been using it much
lately. I had James Askins
“Rejuvenate” the ball, and it
worked. Shows me not to give
up on a good ball to soon.
Thoughts on the big series?
I had been bowling good in
this league but didn’t expect to
bowl that well. I had a bunch
of my friends that there were
rooting me on so that was
great. They had changed the
shot up at Watauga a little and
I was playing a part of the lane
that I don’t normally play.
How long do you plan to
keep bowling? I bowl two
leagues now, and alternate in
another. I am just a league
bowler and I plan to bowl as
long as my body will allow me.
What is your all-time favorite
movie? I would have to say
Slapshot, it’s an older movie,
and I’m a big hockey fan.
What is your favorite
restaurant? Anything Italian,
my favorite Italian restaurant is
Carrabba’s.
Where did you take your
best vacation? My 21st birthday
to Las Vegas, it was the last
time that our family went
somewhere together, my sister
and my parents, it was a great
experience.
What is your favorite piece of
technology? It is a tie between
the Xbox and my cell phone,
which is such a big part of my
life.
If you were the commissioner
of all things bowling for a day
what would you change? You
can see that everyone is trying
to get more youth in the game
which is great. I think they
need to cater to the league
bowlers more and continue to
get more kids involved more
and make it more competitive.
Favorite hobby besides bowling?
Playing hockey, I played
until I was 21, and now I only
get to play once or twice a year
now. I liked how difficult it
is, the tempo and there are so
many things going on with the
game that most people don’t
even realize.
wanted to move closer to his
family. I transferred to the
PBA Names Press Room in Honor of
Hall of Famer Chuck Pezzano
SEATTLE, WA – Since the
formation of the Professional
Bowlers Association in 1958,
no one has contributed more
to the organization in so many
different ways than PBA Hall of
Famer Chuck Pezzano.
In recognition of the
81-year-old Clifton, N.J.,
native’s contributions to
the PBA, his name will be
permanently attached to the
organization beginning with
the introduction of the Chuck
Pezzano PBA Press Room
during the PBA Tournament of
Champions at Red Rock Lanes
in Las Vegas.
The Chuck Pezzano PBA
Press Room also will welcome
the news media at all future
Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour
events and it will have a
permanent home on pba.com
for all news media visitors who
visit the PBA’s official website.
“It think it’s a pretty nice
honor,” Pezzano said. “It came
as a complete surprise.”
Pezzano first became
involved with the PBA as a topflight
competitor and charter
member; he was the first
collegiate bowler in the United
States to bowl an 800 series.
But his legacy off the lanes far
surpassed his credentials as a
player as he evolved into the
most prolific bowling writer in
history.
His weekly bowling column
has been published in The
Record in Hackensack, N.J.,
every week for more than 50
years. He has written stories
for every leading bowling
publication in the country. He
has written books, worked as a
consultant on television, movie
and instructional videos, and
traveled the country serving as
an emcee and guest speaker at
hundreds of bowling functions.
And to this day, his nationally-
syndicated columns appear in
bowling publications across
America.
Pezzano also was heavily
involved in PBA business
affairs, running the PBA East
Region for 20 years. He was
secretary of the PBA Hall of
Fame for nearly 20 years, and
served as the organization’s
official historian for longer
than that.
Pezzano and fellow New
Jersey entrepreneur Frank
Esposito – who together created
the PBA Regional program
– were the first Meritorious
Service inductees in the
inaugural PBA Hall of Fame
class in 1975. He was elected
to the American Bowling
Congress Hall of Fame in
1982, and was recipient of the
Bowling Writers Association of
America’s Luby Hall of Fame
Award in 1974. That’s just a
small sampling of the awards
he has won.
“I don’t think anyone has
poured more of his heart and
soul into the PBA than Chuck
Pezzano has over a span of
more than 50 years,” said PBA
CEO and Commissioner Fred
Schreyer. “Chuck Pezzano
deserves to have his name
attached to the PBA Press
Room not only in recognition
of all he has done for the PBA,
but as an inspiration for all
future bowling journalists.”
“Unveiling the press
room for the Tournament
of Champions honors all of
the writers of the past who
appreciated the greatness
of what I always called the
Firestone,” Pezzano said. “(The
Founded in 1939 by African
a commitment to the principles
of sportsmanship, fellowship
and friendship within its ranks
and throughout the world of
bowling. TNBA membership
and tournaments are open to
everyone.
“We know this has created a
buzz within the TNBA bowling
community and will bring out
the best classic bowlers, not
only TNBA members, but other
USBC bowlers as well,” said
TNBA President Dr. Michael
Boykins. “This is a win-win
for both organizations. It
really shows USBC’s support
of its affinity groups and
sets up a template for future
opportunities. It also gives
TNBA a platform to continue
bowlers come out for this
Entry deadlines extended
for 2011 Women’s and
Open Championships
ARLINGTON - Tournament
season is right around the
corner, and it’s not too late
to be part of the action at the
2011 United States Bowling
Congress Women’s and Open
Championships.
The entry deadline for the
USBC Women’s Championships
has been extended to
March 1, while USBC Open
Championships competitors
now will have until March 4 to
submit their entries.
The 2011 Open
Championships will be the
first to kick off this year as it
begins its 122-day run March
4. Bowlers from all 50 states
and several foreign countries
will converge on the one-of-akind,
78-lane National Bowling
Stadium in Reno, Nev., before
the tournament concludes on
July 3.
More than 12,000 five-player
teams already are headed for
“The Biggest Little City in the
World,” but there’s still plenty
of room available for bowlers
interested in trying to earn a
share of the $5 million prize
fund.
This year, the Women’s
Championships will return to
New York state for the first
time since 1996 and settle into
Syracuse’s Oncenter Complex,
where 48 specially-constructed
lanes and custom-built,
state- of-the-art scoreboards
will await more than 30,000
bowlers. The event gets
July 3.
The Women’s
Championships received
a successful makeover in
2010 and now features three
average- based divisions that
use a 100-percent handicap
format. Between the new
look of the venue and the
new format, the Women’s
Championships is a can’t-miss
opportunity for women of all
ages and skill levels.
“We take great pride in
our championship events,
and we don’t want anyone to
miss out on the opportunity to
compete on bowling’s biggest
stages,” said Brian Lewis,
USBC Managing Director of
Tournaments. “Entries for
both the Open and Women’s
Championships have been
steady as the original deadlines
approached, so we want to
give undecided bowlers and
captains a little more time to
get their teams together and
join us.”
For bowlers looking for
extra opportunities to cash in
on the championship lanes,
there’s always a variety of side
events and jackpots available
on-site, including traditional
brackets, strike jackpots and
side pots.
She earned one professional
title, the PWBA Oxnard Open
in 1964, and took second in
three other events. She was
inducted into the PWBA Hall of
Fame in 1996.
She began her bowling
career in her hometown of
Akron, Ohio. In 1952, at age 19,
she became the 27th woman in
bowling history to roll a perfect
game. It was the only 300 game
the WIBC recorded during the
1952-53 season.
One of her more interesting
moments in bowling occurred
at the 1959 BPAA All-Star
Tournament in Buffalo, N.Y.
A severe snowstorm left her
without transportation, so
Zimmerman and Buzz Fazio
decided to run to the center.
She described how they
ran through the snow and
managed to arrive at the center
moments before the squad went
to the floor.
“The officials already had
Chris Barnes, the recent
PBA World Champion, and selfproclaimed
“greatest bowler in
Double Oak, Texas”, pounded out
potent 243-279-267 = 789 numbers
in Monday Nite Mixers action
to lead the scoring parade for
the week at AMF Lewisville.
YES Fund welcomes
five new partners
ARLINGTON – The Youth
Education Services (YES) Fund
expanded its partner base
as five recognized bowling
industry organizations stepped
forward to join the program
dedicated to youth bowling.
Kegel, Luby Publishing,
International Bowling Pro Shop
and Instructors Association
(IBPSIA), Billiard and Bowling
Institute of America (BBIA) and
Bowlers Journal International
are now official YES Fund
partners after making
significant contributions.
“I am extremely grateful
to see these leaders in
the bowling industry step
forward in support of our
future,” Bowling Proprietors’
Director of Youth, Chad
Murphy said. “The YES Fund
continues to be a way to unite
all of bowling for the common
goal of promoting youth
involvement in the sport.”
When the YES Fund was
created last year, an initial
project was the development
of a new mainstream sports
model for bowlers 12 years
old and younger. Preliminary
pilot programs have received
positive feedback and
additional markets soon will
have the opportunity to take
part in the program.
The YES Fund also has
focused on providing assistance
to high school bowling. In
November, The YES Fund
- High School Grant Program
launched and will provide
$2,500 to four high school
programs annually.
“All of the YES Fund
projects are designed to keep
young people engaged in
bowling,” Murphy said. “The
outstanding commitment
from our partners makes this
possible and we hope more
companies and individuals
will join the YES Fund on this
journey.”
The YES Fund is a joint
initiative of BPAA and
the United States Bowling
Congress. The YES Fund also
is supported by its founding
partners Brunswick, Columbia
300, Ebonite, 900 Global,
Hammer, QubicaAMF, Roto
Continued from Page 1
Michael Haugen Jr. of Carefree,
Ariz., in Saturday night’s
elimination round, 243-172, to
reach Sunday’s finals where
he eliminated Finland’s Osku
Palermaa, 246-176, and Sean
Rash of Montgomery, Ill.,
237-161, for the chance to meet
O’Neill for the title.
In the title match, Barnes
started with six strikes to
build a 31-pin lead after seven
frames, but O’Neill refused to
back down, finishing with a
string of four strikes to force
Barnes to mark in the 10th
frame. Barnes’ strike on his
first shot in the clinched the
title.
“I feel bad for Bill,” Barnes
said. “He was the best bowler
in the PBA World Series to get
here, but I’ve been in his shoes
a few times and I’m not going
to give the trophy back.
“There are a lot of guys
who have won the PBA World
Championship, but it’s a short
and distinguished list of guys
who have won the Triple
Crown,” he added. “Right
after I won, Billy Hardwick
called my wife and told her to
welcome me to the club.”
“I’m not unhappy with my
performance,” O’Neill said.
“I threw all but one shot on
line. When I needed shots to
make Chris show up in 10th,
they were all good. That’s
something I’ve struggled with
out here. I think it’s a good
sign of things to come.”
The Lumber Liquidators
PBA Tour immediately moved
to Red Rock Lanes in northwest
Las Vegas later Sunday for the
opening qualifying round for
ments I’ve made.
Thoughts on the big series? I
had lost some weight recently
and had been bowling really
bad. Now I am figuring out
what I need to do differently
with my swing. I also went
back to Otis Pillow to have him
change the pitch in my thumb
holes and started using the
switch grips in the thumb hole,
and that has made all of the
difference. It all came together
on this night.
How long do you plan to
keep bowling? As long as my
body will let me bowl. I see the
little old ladies bowling and I
want to be one of them.
What is your all-time
favorite movie? Bad Boys, I can
watch that over and over again.
But I can also watch Avatar all
day every day…I can always
What is your favorite
restaurant? III Forks, I always
order the filet.
Where did you take your
best vacation? It would have to
be the Hawaiian cruise for my
50th birthday. I liked that we
visited a different island every
day. Maui was the best.
What is your favorite piece of
technology? It would have to be
the iPhone, everything is there.
I can do it all from my phone;
everybody needs one.
If you were the commissioner
of all things bowling
for a day what would you
change? I would like to change
the rewards and recognition
are not the high average
competitive bowler and most
awards are for those bowlers.
Do You Remember?

PRO SHOP OWNER
Continued from Page 1
high school and attended
several bowling center sleepover
events. After college, he
started bowling leagues with
his sister and more league
bowling would soon follow.
It was at this point where he
realized he needed a bowling
ball with a custom fit instead
of the normal house ball. His
first ball was drilled by Bruce
Gordon and Bea Martinez.
“My first ball that was
custom drilled for me was
an AMF XS,” said Du, who
is an engineer by trade and
has also worked part-time as
a stock investor. “I realized
the big difference in the feel
from bowling with a house
ball. I also noticed how both
Bruce and Bea treated me as a
customer and a bowler and that
has stuck with me.”
It goes without saying that
Du is always looking for a
better way to serve his customers.
He continues to experiment
with various chemical
combinations for finger and
thumb slug moldings. He also
has considered the possible use
of clay as a molding tool for
thumbs for the most accurate
and precise feel.
“I’m not doing my job, if I’m
not trying to always improve,”
Du said. “I even have a budget
for research and development.”
Du not only incorporates his
motto in his pro shops, but he
also displays it as a coach. Du
is the voluntary head bowling
coach at Plano East High
School, but was only supposed
to serve as an assistant coach
when he joined the team in
2006. Upon his arrival, Du noticed
several bowlers who were
in the program just to “hang
out”. As a result, Du added a
defined structure and the kids
began to improve over time.
After four weeks as an assistant
coach, Du took over as
head coach at Christmas break
and went on to coach the boys
team to its first state title and
the first team title of any kind
in Plano East High School history.
Since then, he has led the
Plano East bowling program
girl’s team to a state runner-up
finish in 2009 and another
boy’s state title in 2010.
“I welcome all bowlers
and skill levels into my program,”
said Du, who also has
mentored students in robotics
and math. “I teach the kids
to believe in themselves and I
want to show them a different
viewpoint, it provided
everything you needed, and
that’s why it has been the best
event in history from the start.
“I appreciated it because
it gave me an opportunity
to meet and get to know the
greatest players in the country,
along with a lot of news media
guys who weren’t necessarily
assigned to bowling,” Pezzano
continued. “The TOC put
“I remember a young lady
Page 16 | Thursday, January 27, 2011 | THE BOWLING NEWS
For the last ten years,
January has meant one thing;
the season opener of American
Idol.
It’s a little different this year
than other year’s as this is the
first season without Simon
Cowell, and I just wasn’t sure
what to expect.
This year, Aerosmith’s lead
singer, or more importantly Liv
Tyler’s dad, Steven Tyler and
Jennifer Lopez have joined the
judges panel alongside Randy
Jackson.
In the first couple of episodes
it became apparent that
Randy is leading the way and
seems to deliver most of the
insults and bad news.
Jennifer is more like Paula
Abdul as she seems to have a
really hard time saying no or
crushing dreams. Steven Tyler
is growing on me, but currently
he seems like a one trick
pony. Everything he has to say
seems to include him screaming
some ridiculous high note
like he was singing a song.
In past years it appeared
that there weren’t very many
sixteen-year-olds, but this year
it seems like the best talent are
the young ones.
It also doesn’t seem like
they are showing a ton of
the bad singers and are more
focused on the good ones.
Although I like to see the
good ones I find that most
people that I talk to like to see
the train-wrecks more than the
real talent.
I’m really curious to see
what the first ratings without
Simon will be.
Recently I’ve started to see
an ugly trend with television.
My wife Nikki directed me
to some of the reality shows
on MTV and some of them are
really disturbing.
More of a disturbing trend
are the ages of the viewers of
these shows. As a parent of
a 12 year old girl I’m always
telling her not to watch these
sleazy shows, however, amazingly
her TV always seems to
just happen to be MTV while
Jersey Shore is on when I go in
her room.
I’ve never actually watched
an episode of Jersey Shore, but
last night my wife was watching
it and it was extremely
disturbing to see what this
show is about.
First the glorification of
going to jail was the first thing
that stood out. Apparently
Snookie got drunk on a beach
and was resisting arrest.
When they asked her about
the incident it almost appeared
as if she was proud that she got
arrested.
I really hope the youth of
today doesn’t think that getting
arrested is the norm and that
it’s no big deal. The truth is
that these “celebrities” have
no real future and so it doesn’t
matter what’s on their permanent
record.
After knowing how the
inside of the hiring practice
goes I know the difficulty of
finding a job with an arrest on
your record.
Another scary thing is how
they make a big deal out of
who is having “relations” with
who.
Educators are throwing their
hands up in the air after spending
years and years preaching
about abstinence and safety
just to have these fools glorify
sleeping around.
Typically I recommend
watching shows, but not this
one. I would encourage you to
stop watching these shows so
they’ll take them off the air.
Plus I’m tired of seeing
people with zero talent and
zero skills make millions of
dollars.
The Tournament of Champions
is the premier tournament
on the PBA Tour and after
seeing the format for this thing
you can definitely bet that the
best bowler is going to win the
tournament.
It features one of the most
grueling formats I think I’ve
ever seen.
To start at the lowest level,
a person who has a simple
regional title would have to
bowl 14 qualifying games just
to get into the elite field.
Then they would have to 20
more qualifying games to make
the top 53.
You can't win the Stanley Cup, but you can be a Champion
80 th Annual Dallas USBC Bowling
Association Championship Tournament
Dates - March 5 th , 6 th & 12 th , 13 th
Then once you make the top
53 you have to bowl 14 more
games just to make the top 24.
THEN you have to bowl 24
games of round robin match
play to make the TV show.
That’s 72 games on a very
challenging condition against
the best of the best.
I know just how hard that is
to do physically, but the mental
part, the ups and downs; it
would be exhausting as well.
Kudos to whoever comes out
on top in this one!
