Ahh… the holidays are<br />
officially upon us. With<br />
Thanksgiving this week and<br />
Christmas just a few weeks<br />
away, it always reminds me to<br />
be thankful. I try to be grateful<br />
and say Thank You every day,<br />
but the holidays always remind<br />
me of the people and things I<br />
have to be thankful for.<br />
One of the first things<br />
most people will say they are<br />
thankful for is their health.<br />
I’m not the healthiest person<br />
in the world, but I am glad<br />
that I’m healthy enough to do<br />
the things I enjoy like bowling<br />
and playing softball. We just<br />
finished another softball season<br />
and I’m grateful to have made it<br />
through with great weather and<br />
without any injuries. Every year<br />
I get reminded that I’m getting<br />
too old to keep playing ball, but<br />
sadly I’m still one of the youngest<br />
on my team so they won’t<br />
let me use that excuse to quit<br />
playing. And, I really do still<br />
enjoy it most of the time. We<br />
play teams half our ages and<br />
still managed to go undefeated<br />
again this session.<br />
<strong>The</strong> next thing I am always<br />
thankful for is my family. First<br />
of all, they put up with me and<br />
I’m not sure everyone’s family<br />
would. All of my life, they have<br />

always been encouraging and<br />
supportive of me in everything<br />
I do. <strong>The</strong>y accept me; the good,<br />
the bad and even the ugly<br />
sometimes. And they forgive<br />
me for mistakes I’ve made and<br />
love me through it all. We can<br />
all lean on each other in my<br />
family and it makes all things<br />
in life a little easier.<br />
I’m also very thankful for<br />
my bowling family. It always<br />
warms my heart to see how<br />
the bowling community comes<br />
together like a family in times<br />
of loss or need. I’ve said this<br />
before about how generous<br />
bowlers are when it comes to<br />
raising money for charities like<br />
the diabetes foundation, breast<br />
and other cancer research,<br />
veterans, etc., but we are also<br />
generous when it comes to<br />
helping each other. In this<br />
extended family, we may not all<br />
know each other, but we know<br />
someone who knows the person<br />
everyone is trying to help.<br />
Families are a large part of<br />
the bowling community. How<br />
many children start bowling<br />
because their father bowls or<br />
their grandmother bowls? I<br />
know my siblings and I started<br />
because our mother bowled<br />
every week. It’s great that<br />
bowling is a sport that you can<br />

participate in a league with<br />
your entire family. You can be<br />
on a team with your children,<br />
parents, and even grandparents<br />
and still be competitive. It’s<br />
very rare that I find someone<br />
who is really into bowling who<br />
doesn’t have someone else in<br />
their family who is or was a<br />
bowler. I notice it in the Looking<br />
Back section of the paper<br />
every week, one generation of<br />
a family can be in the 20 years<br />
ago and their child will show<br />
up in the 10 years ago section.<br />
It’s really great to see.<br />
Speaking of sections in the<br />
paper, has anyone else noticed<br />
how short the Honor Roll has<br />
gotten? We haven’t had that<br />
many centers in the metroplex<br />
shut down recently, but there are<br />
just fewer who are getting the<br />
paper each week. I had a bowler<br />
in my league talking to me<br />
about this last week. He finally<br />
bowled another honor score, but<br />
because it was at another center<br />
that wasn’t taking the paper it<br />
won’t get printed for him to be<br />
able to keep in his memorabilia<br />
or scrapbook. So, congrats to Bill<br />
Criss for bowling a 299 game at<br />
Cityview a few weeks ago. It’s<br />
really not that expensive for a<br />
center to keep <strong>The</strong> <strong>Bowling</strong> <strong>News</strong><br />
coming in the building each<br />
week. It’s a small price to pay to<br />
be able to showcase your league<br />
bowlers, give them the opportunity<br />
to know what tournaments<br />
and other things are going on<br />
around the metroplex, and read<br />
my wisdom (or nonsense) each<br />
week.<br />
And finally, I’m thankful<br />
to Tony, Genie, and the rest of<br />
<strong>The</strong> Bowing <strong>News</strong> family for<br />
giving me the opportunity to<br />
share a part of myself each<br />
week. Thank you all for<br />

Dick Smith<br />
passes away<br />
SASBA Hall of Famer<br />
and long-time DFW bowling<br />
legend, Dick Smith<br />
passed away on Friday<br />
November 9th after a long<br />
battle with cancer. He was<br />
71 yrs-old.<br />
Smith was an eight-time<br />
SASBA champion who is<br />
20th on the all-time earnings<br />
list with over $62,000.<br />
He is remembered by his<br />
bowling friends as an<br />
extremely kind man who<br />
always had a smile on his<br />
face. His bowling ball will<br />
always be remembered as<br />
having the power to knock<br />
more pins than it was<br />
supposed to, earning him<br />
several nicknames over the<br />
years for his penchant for<br />
the sloppy strike.<br />
He is survived by<br />
his wife Jan, children,<br />
grandchildren, and<br />
great-grandchildren<br />
He was buried at the<br />
Acton Cemetery in Grandbury,<br />
TX on Nov. 12th.<br />
Joy McGregor passes away<br />
Joy McGregor, wife of Hall<br />
of Famer Bob McGregor, lost<br />
her 18-month battle with<br />
cancer on Tuesday November<br />
13th and went home to her<br />
Lord and Savior.<br />
She is survived by her loving<br />
husband, Bob; daughters,<br />
Kelly Parker, Ryan Asprion<br />
and husband Rene, Cory<br />
Postema and husband Andy;<br />
brother, Gene Arnold and wife<br />
Sherry; grandsons, Zachariah<br />
and Noah Postema, Blake and<br />
Nickolas Parker, Nolan and<br />
Dalton Asprion.<br />
<strong>The</strong> memorial service was<br />
held Monday November 19th at<br />
10 a.m. at Glory of Zion Church<br />
in Corinth, TX.<br />

in lieu of flowers you would<br />
consider a gift that we would<br />
forward to the Mango Tree<br />
Church in Cambodia. It’s<br />

out-of-the-way village. Joy<br />
jumped in and began supporting<br />
the group with money to<br />
buy food (they had very little<br />
during the dry season) and to<br />
start construction at $0.10 per<br />
brick on a small church building.<br />
<strong>The</strong> foundation and walls<br />
are in, and I believe they (the<br />
members) are now working on<br />
the roof and interior as they<br />
receive funds. It’s nothing like<br />
the church buildings we see<br />
