Ahh… the holidays are
officially upon us. With
Thanksgiving this week and
Christmas just a few weeks
away, it always reminds me to
be thankful. I try to be grateful
and say Thank You every day,
but the holidays always remind
me of the people and things I
have to be thankful for.
One of the first things
most people will say they are
thankful for is their health.
I’m not the healthiest person
in the world, but I am glad
that I’m healthy enough to do
the things I enjoy like bowling
and playing softball. We just
finished another softball season
and I’m grateful to have made it
through with great weather and
without any injuries. Every year
I get reminded that I’m getting
too old to keep playing ball, but
sadly I’m still one of the youngest
on my team so they won’t
let me use that excuse to quit
playing. And, I really do still
enjoy it most of the time. We
play teams half our ages and
still managed to go undefeated
again this session.
The next thing I am always
thankful for is my family. First
of all, they put up with me and
I’m not sure everyone’s family
would. All of my life, they have
always been encouraging and
supportive of me in everything
I do. They accept me; the good,
the bad and even the ugly
sometimes. And they forgive
me for mistakes I’ve made and
love me through it all. We can
all lean on each other in my
family and it makes all things
in life a little easier.
I’m also very thankful for
my bowling family. It always
warms my heart to see how
the bowling community comes
together like a family in times
of loss or need. I’ve said this
before about how generous
bowlers are when it comes to
raising money for charities like
the diabetes foundation, breast
and other cancer research,
veterans, etc., but we are also
generous when it comes to
helping each other. In this
extended family, we may not all
know each other, but we know
someone who knows the person
everyone is trying to help.
Families are a large part of
the bowling community. How
many children start bowling
because their father bowls or
their grandmother bowls? I
know my siblings and I started
because our mother bowled
every week. It’s great that
bowling is a sport that you can
participate in a league with
your entire family. You can be
on a team with your children,
parents, and even grandparents
and still be competitive. It’s
very rare that I find someone
who is really into bowling who
doesn’t have someone else in
their family who is or was a
bowler. I notice it in the Looking
Back section of the paper
every week, one generation of
a family can be in the 20 years
ago and their child will show
up in the 10 years ago section.
It’s really great to see.
Speaking of sections in the
paper, has anyone else noticed
how short the Honor Roll has
gotten? We haven’t had that
many centers in the metroplex
shut down recently, but there are
just fewer who are getting the
paper each week. I had a bowler
in my league talking to me
about this last week. He finally
bowled another honor score, but
because it was at another center
that wasn’t taking the paper it
won’t get printed for him to be
able to keep in his memorabilia
or scrapbook. So, congrats to Bill
Criss for bowling a 299 game at
Cityview a few weeks ago. It’s
really not that expensive for a
center to keep The Bowling News
coming in the building each
week. It’s a small price to pay to
be able to showcase your league
bowlers, give them the opportunity
to know what tournaments
and other things are going on
around the metroplex, and read
my wisdom (or nonsense) each
week.
And finally, I’m thankful
to Tony, Genie, and the rest of
The Bowing News family for
giving me the opportunity to
share a part of myself each
week. Thank you all for
continuing to read each week
and I hope you enjoy Last Call!
Dick Smith
passes away
SASBA Hall of Famer
and long-time DFW bowling
legend, Dick Smith
passed away on Friday
November 9th after a long
battle with cancer. He was
71 yrs-old.
Smith was an eight-time
SASBA champion who is
20th on the all-time earnings
list with over $62,000.
He is remembered by his
bowling friends as an
extremely kind man who
always had a smile on his
face. His bowling ball will
always be remembered as
having the power to knock
more pins than it was
supposed to, earning him
several nicknames over the
years for his penchant for
the sloppy strike.
He is survived by
his wife Jan, children,
grandchildren, and
great-grandchildren
He was buried at the
Acton Cemetery in Grandbury,
TX on Nov. 12th.
Joy McGregor passes away
Joy McGregor, wife of Hall
of Famer Bob McGregor, lost
her 18-month battle with
cancer on Tuesday November
13th and went home to her
Lord and Savior.
She is survived by her loving
husband, Bob; daughters,
Kelly Parker, Ryan Asprion
and husband Rene, Cory
Postema and husband Andy;
brother, Gene Arnold and wife
Sherry; grandsons, Zachariah
and Noah Postema, Blake and
Nickolas Parker, Nolan and
Dalton Asprion.
The memorial service was
held Monday November 19th at
10 a.m. at Glory of Zion Church
in Corinth, TX.
From Bob: Joy hoped that
in lieu of flowers you would
consider a gift that we would
forward to the Mango Tree
Church in Cambodia. It’s
Joy McGregor
named that because its mem- started the church in a small,
out-of-the-way village. Joy
jumped in and began supporting
the group with money to
buy food (they had very little
during the dry season) and to
start construction at $0.10 per
brick on a small church building.
The foundation and walls
are in, and I believe they (the
members) are now working on
the roof and interior as they
receive funds. It’s nothing like
the church buildings we see
Joy and grandson Nolan.
bers have been meeting under
a mango tree for many months.
We found out about it not long
ago from our Cambodian next
door neighbor whose nephew
every day, but it will be a wonderful
gathering place for the
villagers. If this appeals to you,
please make out your check to
Glory of Zion international and
on the “for” or “subject” line of
the check be sure to write “Joy
McGregor Memorial Fund.”
