Highlander Happenings
March 28 – April 9, 2011
GIRL’S STATE - Congratulations to our two junior girls who were chosen by the American Legion
Auxiliary to attend Girls' State one week this summer at Texas Lutheran University. They are Stephanie
Wythe and Harica Kodakandla. Normally, only one girl is chosen to represent each Texas high school,
but our judges had such a tough time making a decision that they decided to sponsor two of our students.
The alternate chosen is Mary Beale. Students were nominated by their teachers, coaches, or organization
sponsors based on their citizenship and leadership. We had many outstanding students nominated, and it
was a very tough decision.
BOY’S STATE - Congratulations to Garrett Neville, Nathan Hinds, and Brendan Frick for being
selected to attend Texas Boys State this summer in Austin. The alternate is Brandon Taylor. These boys
were selected from a large number of junior boys who were nominated by their teachers and organization
sponsors for portraying great values and citizenship. At the conference, they will join other junior
outstanding leaders from across Texas to learn about democracy, government, and leadership.
HIGHSTEPPERS - Congratulations to the Highsteppers on a successful contest season. The girls
competed at Cy Woods High School and the University of Central Florida and brought home 6 first place
trophies in the areas of Kick, Prop and Open. In addition, the team brought home the highest performance
of the day trophy for their Kick routine to the music from the Contender. Specialty awards were given in
the areas of Choreography, Precision and Technique. Individual soloists include freshman Michaela
McGraw, sophomores Morgan Kelley and Stephanie Shreve, juniors Abigail Cranford and Erin Kedzie
and senior Isabelle Crouch. Congratulations to Abbie Cranford for placing 2nd in Florida. Sisters Kinley
and Kasey Meyer placed first in the duet division. Officers placed 1st overall in Florida as well. Officers
for the team are Seniors Major Sammie Gilmore and Lt. Majors Amy Albers and Jennifer Emanuel,
Junior Captains Jordan Wiatt and Erin Kedzie and Junior Lieutenants Kelly Morris, Abigail Cranford,
Kasey Meyer and Amanda Kaufman.
There will be an informational meeting for those students interested in trying out for the 2011-2012
Highstepper team Monday, March 28th at 6:30 PM in the TWHS LGI.
SCIENCE NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY - Science National Honor Society will be selling Tie-Dye
T-Shirts to benefit malnourished children. Also, members Rachel Kinney, Matthew Kryder and Kirsti
Harlan performed experiments with the Life Skills students before Spring Break. Everyone enjoyed these
hands-on activities.
AFJROTC - Select members of AFJROTC Physical Training team participated in the first ever Warrior
Dash in Conroe during spring break. Thirteen cadets, Keith Baker, Nick Bateman, Michael Campos,
Anna Ciufo, Betsy Gorter, Spencer McIntosh, Kegan McNeil, Tommy Niemeyer, Dominic Rizzo, Matt
Varacalli, Zak Wilson and Jeron Young, all got down in the mud and the crud and finished the 3.2 mile
run peppered with 13 various obstacles. A fun time was had by all!
JAPANESE NEWS - The Japanese Club will launch a $4000 Donation Campaign -- $1 from everyone --
for two weeks, starting Monday, March 28th. Please send or bring your donation of any amount (cash or
check - made out to TWHS) to any of the classroom teachers during these two weeks. We are hoping to
raise $4000 to send to the earthquake and tsunami victims in northern Japan. We are also going to send a
message to the victims -- if students can stop by the room 230 to write a message, we would appreciate it
very much.
We welcomed Japanese students from Ino Shogyo High School of Kochi, Japan, this week. Their area
was not affected by tsunami and earthquake but some difficulties with the transportation. We were very
happy that they made the trip. They visited Japanese classes and choir. They also enjoyed their trip to
NASA.
Inage High School from Chiba will be visiting TWHS at the end of August for one week. We are looking
“Palettes & Paintings”
The Woodlands High School
Art Trust’s Collection Unveiling and Fundraiser
Friday, May 6, 2011
6-8 pm
The Woodlands High School
Silent Auction of Artist’s Palettes
“Palettes and Paintings” will be the inaugural unveiling of the new art collection at TWHS. The students
will use funds raised from their Homecoming Dance to purchase art works selected by the student body
for an art collection that will be hung in the hallways of our school. The purpose of the collection is to
not only expose students to original art on a daily basis, but to also include the artworks as part of the
curriculum for some classes. The selections of art works will be made each Spring. The entire student
body will be voting on which pieces to include in the new collection. The decision for final 2-3 pieces
will be made from the top five student choices. The vision is for the collection to be student-purchased,
student-selected and always accessible. It is hoped that the collection will reflect the tastes and the times
of each passing year as pieces are added to the collection.
The Woodlands High School Art Trust has been founded to help with the maintenance and organization
of the collection. The role of the Art Trust is to assist the students in selecting artists/art works to be
considered for the collection. The Art Trust will also raise funds to pay for the installation, presentation
and conservation of the art works. To achieve this goal, the Art Trust will present Palettes and Paintings
on Friday, May 6, 2011. 100 wooden artist’s palettes have been distributed to students, teachers and
professionals in The Woodlands to be turned into pieces of art. The palettes may be painted on or
incorporated into larger pieces of art. The palettes will be on display the week of May 2-6 at The
Woodlands High School and then culminate in a silent auction the evening of May 6. Everyone is invited
to attend this free event.
Additionally, the art works that TWHS students have selected for their new art collection will be unveiled
at this event. Docents, as well as the artists themselves, will be on hand to discuss their art works. On
display will be the final 20 pieces that the students have narrowed down. Art supporters in our
community can assist the students and their new collection by either purchasing the palettes that will be
for auction or by making donations directly to the Art Trust for purchase of additional artworks that the
students have chosen. All purchases of palettes or donations directly to the Art Trust are tax deductible as
The Woodlands High School Art Trust is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization. For further information
please contact Susan Cosculluela at sjc2230@aol.com
these and all our school records on our website www.highlanderbasketball.org by going to the History
This week State Theatre Director Luis Munoz was pleased to announce the 2011 University
Interscholastic League Theatrical Design finalists. With 36 entries in its debut in 2006 the
contest has grown to 261 entries this year. Jessica Trinque, a senior and president of The
Woodlands High School Drama Department, was honored as a State Finalist. For the first time,
The Woodlands High School has entered this event and department chair Carlen Gilseth was
especially excited to have a student advance to UIL State.
Trinque competed in the Marketing Design division of the contest, and submitted a design
focused on the show Alice in Wonderland by Eva La Gallienne and Florida Friebus. The
advertising team of Michele Autenreith-Brown and Beverly Ingle from Guerra, DeBerry and
Coody Marketing & Communications adjudicated the Marketing entries, and Trinque received
exemplary ratings and will compete for State Honors in May at the University of Texas at
Austin.
Trinque’s design included a poster, a website layout, a press release, and a justification of the
designs. Her goal was to achieve “Professionalism, appealing aesthetics, and to make the concept
relative to the show.”
Trinque’s previous marketing experience includes qualifying for Thespian Nationals in
Marketing for The Man Who Came to Dinner. But her first love and theatrical focus is on acting.
She will be showcased in the upcoming UIL One Act Play The Angelina Project as Angelina
Napolitano, a battered woman driven to murdering her husband with an axe. Trinque has been
involved in the UIL process since her freshman year when she received outstanding crew
member for the State contender, ALL MY SONS. Other awards include receiving 6th in Finals
in the state of Texas for the Texas Forensic Association’s duet acting competition, and qualifying
for Nationals in duet acting at Texas State Thespian Festival. Her TWHS credits include roles in
A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM, LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS, AMADEUS, SPARKS
IN THE PARK, ONCE UPON A MATTRESS, THE MAN WHO CAME TO DINNER,
NOISES OFF! and others. She has also performed in community roles with Aside Productions.
She has been accepted to the 2011 freshman class of the BFA Core Ensemble at The University
of Houston School of Theatre and Dance, and plans to pursue acting.
games and remain undefeated and alone in first place (7-2 overall, 4-0 district). With wins over Episcopal
Houston and Houston Christian, the Highlanders have taken control of the district race. The team
defeated Episcopal at home by a score of 11-6 on March 9. Juniors Spencer Willey (4 goals) and Ian
Seale (1 goal, 3 assists) led the attack. Senior Chase Rogers (2 goals, 2 assists) lit up the scoreboard
from the midfield. Sophomore Ben Lipscomb (2 goals, 1 assist) continued his season long scoring
contribution. Senior Max McKinnon and junior Connor Milton each added a goal. Seniors Nick
Huckins and Nick Sivon led the defense with numerous ground balls and caused turnovers.
The team traveled to St. Petersburg, Florida for spring break playing two games that counted on the
season record and two additional exhibition games. With a few key players unable to attend and a few
others who suffered minor injuries on the trip, the team battled through these tough opponents. We lost to
Fort Collins Unified (CO), 7-2 and nationally ranked Berkshire School (MA), 12-8. However, the team
gained valuable experience and performed very well under difficult circumstances. The first exhibition
contest was a loss to a strong Peddie School (NJ), 9-5. The lone victory on the trip came against the
Bishops School (CA) by a score of 11-2.
On Tuesday, March 22, the Highlanders faced off against previously unbeaten Houston Christian. Billed
as the showdown of the two best teams in Houston, the game lived up to the hype. The Highlanders came
out blazing with three quick goals, but the Mustangs fought back and the first quarter ended with the
score 5-3 in our favor. The Mustangs came alive in the second quarter outscoring the Highlanders, 3-1.
The teams went into halftime tied 6-6 and it looked to be a wild second half. The third quarter would
prove to be decisive with the Highlanders out scoring Houston Christian, 4-2. With the score 10-8 in
favor of the Highlanders entering the final quarter, the defenses tightened and each team only managed to
score one goal. Final score - The Woodlands 11, Houston Christian 9. Senior Shane Casey was
outstanding in the goal recording 13 saves. Junior Connor Milton was the offensive star with three goals
and two assists. Juniors Spencer Willey (3 goals), Ian Seale (2 goals, 1 assist) and senior Chase Rogers
(1 goal, 3 assists) were key contributors to the victory. Seniors Alan Good and Max McKinnon each
added a goal, and Max was a force on face-offs. Junior Dylan Gorman was outstanding on the defensive
end.
The team will play their final two home games of the season on Saturday, March 26 against St. Thomas at
