Colby Student Government Association Mid-Year Report
January 5 th , 2013
Dear Colby,
Leading the Student Government Association this fall has been an exciting experience. At the
beginning of this year, we set out four primary goals for SGA: addressing multiculturalism,
strengthening Colby-Waterville relations, improving the campus social scene, and maintaining
high levels of outreach and transparency with the student body. We have made strides towards
reaching each of these goals in the fall semester, and plan to continue work on all of them over
the second semester.
This report serves as a summary of how we have worked towards each of these goals, as well as
an outline of the other initiatives SGA has taken on so far this year. Please reach out to one of us
if you have any questions, comments, or concerns after reading this report.
Enjoy!
I. Progress on Major Goals
a) Multiculturalism
Much of our focus this year in SGA has been fulfilling the first of our major goals, which is
increasing support for multiculturalism on Colby’s campus.
In order to give Colby students an opportunity to share a piece of their story to the student body,
SGA organized the Story Time series, a 30-minute event on Sunday evenings that bring the
student body together for tea, cookies, and the opportunity to hear one of our peers speak. Thus
far, we have hosted five Story Times, with Pandit Mami ‘14, Saboor Sheerazi ‘13, SGA
Secretary Anna Caron ‘13, Carla Aronsohn ‘13, and Dom Kone ‘13 sharing pieces of their
stories with the student body. After holding the first several Story Times in the Pugh Center, we
have recently held the event in the Page Commons for the first time to allow more space for
students to attend. Every Story Time held thus far has had full-to-capacity crowds. There are two
Story Time speakers planned for JanPlan; Elliot Marsing ‘14 and Isadora Alteon ‘13, and we
hope Story Time will continue to be a popular initiative throughout the spring semester.
SGA also worked on an initiative this Fall to create a new SGA-funded position called the
Multicultural Affairs Fellow (MAF). This position was created in conjunction with Dr. Bradley,
director of the Pugh Center, and will compensate a student for completing training and doing
independent work on issues of Multiculturalism at Colby. Shane Rogers ‘15, who was recently
hired for the position, will begin training with Dr. Bradley in January. Shane will start working
as the Multicultural Affairs Fellow in February.
SGA also worked to heighten enrollment in the five sections of Multicultural Literacy (ED197)
this JanPlan. Along with Berol Dewdney ‘13, SGA held an ED197 awareness campaign in
November through tabling in Pulver and also reached out to the freshmen class to provide
information about the course. The five sections of 20 students each are all fully or over-enrolled
heading into January. Moreover, three members of SGA—Kareem, Anna, and Cole Yaverbaum,
Class of ’14 President—will be serving as teaching assistants for the course, as will CA liason to
SGA, Jon Kalin ’14. Discussions will continue in the Academic Affairs Committee about how
this course could complement or supplement the current form of the diversity requirement.
b) Colby-Waterville Relations
One of our first initiatives this year was undertaking Hill ‘n The Ville. SGA co-sponsored this
event with SPB as a way to encourage students to come into downtown Waterville. As a result of
running the program, we have identified certain issues that need to be addressed with Hill ‘n the
Ville to make it more successful. This includes working with next year’s leaders of SGA and
SPB to identify bands that would be of more interest to Colby students in collaboration with the
local agency that has been responsible for selection in years past. Other future changes
potentially include involving the CCAK program and moving Hill ‘n The Ville to a date that
does not interfere with Loudness.
In order to decrease the amount of incidents between students living off campus and Waterville
Police, we held a beginning-of-the-semester informational meeting between representatives of
each off-campus house, Waterville PD, and Campus security. Thus far, there have not been as
many conflicts between the two groups as there were last year.
c. Campus Social Scene
Morgan is serving as one of the student representatives to the Trustee Task Force on
Accountability. This group has spent a significant amount of time talking about ways in which
student accountability ties into the social scene at Colby. Morgan and the other students who are
involved in work on accountability welcome student feedback on the subject in order to find a
way of addressing student accountability which students support.
SGA passed 2013 Co-President Nick Zeller’s proposal for a new Alfond Vandalism Policy.
Under this policy, any underclassman who commits destructive dorm vandalism within the
Alfond Apartments forfeits their right to live in the Apartments senior year, in addition to being
subject to the already existing disciplinary framework. Those who committed the vandalism in
their first year may present an appeal to the Judicial Board.
SGA has continued to work with Campus Life on improving the registered party process, an
initiative that is still new to Colby and presents students an opportunity for students to throw safe
and fun parties. Dorm vandalism has seen a notable decrease in the first semester, and we hope
that our community will continue to uphold the responsibilities and sense of community that are
crucial to providing a safe community for all Colby students.
d) Outreach and Transparency
This semester we have sent out and posted monthly newsletters for the student body. These
newsletters are intended both to inform students about SGA work and to engage them by
encouraging student responses. We have found that this method does inspire students to respond
with feedback and suggestion, and will be continuing the monthly newsletters from the SGA
President and Vice President in second semester.
Jack Mauel ‘13, SGA Residential Life Chair, has worked with dorm presidents to greatly
increase the publication of dorm president newsletters. We have encouraged dorm presidents to
use these newsletters to inform their constituents about SGA initiates and campus news.
We worked with College President Bro Adams to move some of his office hours to the Spa in
Pulver in the hopes of making them more accessible to students. The first of these open office
hours were held in November. As they were well attended, Bro intends to hold more of these in
the coming semester.
II. Other Initiatives:
During Trustee weekend in October, SGA partnered with the Kassman Leadership Initiative and
the Career Center to put on the "What does Leadership Look like After Colby?" event. This was
a panel question and answer period featuring four current trustees: Leslie Biddle '89, Jane
Powers ‘86, Richard Uchida '79, and Joshua Woodfork ‘97. The trustees talked about the ways
their leadership at Colby shaped their experiences after Colby. Many students engaged the
trustees in conversation after the event, providing a unique opportunity for students to get to
know our Board of Trustees and to increasingly tie our community together.
2014 Co-President Cole Yaverbaum ‘14 spearheaded the organization of this semester’s
Spontaneous Fun Day, which included free snacks and activities for students.
Treasurer Jean -Jacques Ndayisenga ‘13 organized coffee in Miller during finals week, which
was sponsored by SGA, Dining Services, and the Libraries.
2014 Co-President Cole Yaverbaum ‘14 worked on a Sodexo Appreciation initiative with SGA’s
liaison to Hall Staff, John Kalin. They led students in making thank you cards for each Sodexo
worker, and distributed the cards with Sodexo’s annual holiday meals in December.
Alfond Apartments President Pasquale Eckert ‘13 started a neighborhood watch program called
“Night Watch” through which Alfond residents walk through the apartments late at night on
weekends to ensure there is no vandalism occurring.
Drummond President Matt Mantikas ‘13 passed a motion in SGA to find a more specific use of
fines from parking tickets than sending the money to the General Fund. He will work on
specifics of this project in second semester.
Publicity Chair Monica Davis ’13 spearhead SGA’s partnership with Student Post Office
Supervisor Allen Lapan, and College Bookstore Merchandising Clerk Carol Levine on this
year’s 1001 Smiles Campaign. This toy drive raised 1557 dollars, which the program used to buy
many toys for children from the Waterville, Skowhegan, and Augusta area.
Dana President Tionna Haynes ‘15 strengthened the connection between SGA and the Pugh
Center by having all SGA members sign “Pledge to Pugh,” by which they committed to attend
two Pugh events per semester.
All class presidents worked with their respective class councils to successfully put on a class
dinner and multiple class events this semester, including bar nights and study breaks.
