Keswick Fire Receives Donation
Thanks to the nomination of an
area resident, two local fire departments
in Keokuk County received
$2,500 donations this year through
the America’s Farmers Grow Communities
SM program sponsored by
the Monsanto Fund in support of local
farming communities.
The program, which launched in
2010, allows farmers to enter to win
a $2,500 donation for their favorite
community nonprofit organization,
such as 4-H, FFA, schools, fire departments
and other civic groups.
In addition, this past year, the
winning farmer in any county which
was declared a disaster area by the
USDA due to drought, including
Keokuk County, was eligible to
designate an additional $2,500 donation.
Joy Render, of South English,
was one of this year’s winners and
she chose to designate the funds to
the North Keokuk County Fire Department
and the Keswick Volunteer
Fire Department.
“I wanted to show my appreciation
for these departments,” she
Gonzales Announced as Finalist
for Clarke Community School Superintendent
The Clarke Community School
District Board of Education is
pleased to announce that they have
said, “especially since we’ve had
both at our place!”
On Tuesday, March 19, Monsanto
representative Shauna Sieren
attended the check presentation at
the North Keokuk County Fire Station
in South English.
“The purpose of the Grow CommunitiesSM
program is to recognize
the vital role that America’s
farmers play and to help them grow
their communities by supporting local
organizations that are important
to them,” Sieren said. She added
more than 60,000 farmers across
the country participated in the program
this year and one winning
farmer was selected in each of the
1,271 eligible counties.
“The money couldn’t have come
at a better time,” said North Keokuk
County Fire Chief Bill Hoylman.
He said the funds will be used for
truck issues and repairs.
Keswick Fire Chief Larry Bair
expressed his appreciation for the
donation and said the funds would
be used toward the purchase of a
new tank.
Supervisors
Another short meeting for
the Keokuk County Supervisors
on Monday, April 11 with only a
few items on the agenda. A piece
of property was approved to be
donated and transferred to the
City of Gibson. Keokuk County
that Gibson Mayor Steve VanZee
had approached him about the City
property taxes, which is one year’s
then be exempt.
An application with RPA 15
the Keokuk County Engineer for
funding for the Belva Deer Area
Before (above) and after (below) shots of one of the two homes that
were on fire last week. This home at 11227 150th Street is owned by
Mark Anthony Shilling II and Chastina Lea Shilling, according to the
KC Assessor’s website.
Several Fire Departments
Called to Neighboring Blazes
Two homes were on fire just after sunset on Tuesday, March 26 just north
of the What Cheer city limits. The neighboring homes were both vacant at
the time of the blaze and each were in the process of being sold. The for sale
sign still sits in front of one of the homes.
Several fire departments were called to assist What Cheer Fire and Rescue
in fighting the fires. Barnes City, Keswick and Sigourney all joined in
the efforts to save the homes. According to the Keokuk County Assessor’s
website, the homes are owned by Mark Anthony II and Chastina Lea Shilling
and Gary and Barbara Hadsell. The Shilling home is a complete loss while
the Hadsell home shows little damage from the outside.
The fires are still under investigation and no official word has been released
about the cause of the blaze. A call to the state fire investigator has not
been returned. Updates as details are released can be found on our website
and in coming issues of the Vine.
Eagle Thieves Strike Again
Both What Cheer welcome signs
are now missing the eagle that proudly
stood atop each. Thieves have taken
both eagles and for the south sign,
it is the second time. Striking in the
evening hours, these criminals have
again decided to take what does not
belong to them.
Similar scenes were found with
tire tracks in the grass, pry marks on
the sign and the light that normally
shines on the sign, turned to point to
the side. The eagle had been replaced
on the south sign by the What Cheer
Area Community Club after begin
stolen previously. There is no word
yet if the eagles will be replaced
again. They are not cheap and the
Club and City have many other projects
that need the money as well.
These criminals have to be
stopped! If anyone has any information
about the eagles location or the
thieves, please contact the Keokuk County Sheriff’s Office at 641-622-2727.

Fremont-What Cheer Vine
What a beautiful Easter Morning.
The sun was shining and the
temperatures were reasonable as our
church joined for breakfast and a
service at Bradbury Hall at Nelson
Pioneer farm. A large crowd enjoyed
a great breakfast and a very meaningful
service.
I noticed when I came home that
my crocuses were blooming and the
daffodils were about ready to pop. It
must be spring although the coolness
in the air indicates that a bit of winter
is still hanging on.
I have been itching to go to a
track meet and I finally got to do
that Thursday night. I had a big day
Thursday as I made stops at our
branch banks in North English, Belle
Plaine and Cedar Falls and checked
out some trip possibilities in Independence.
I got home in time to go
to Pekin for the Ruitan Relays.
The meet was rescheduled from
Monday night so only five of the
original 14 teams were able to attend.
I had hoped to cover both the
North Mahaska and Tri-County
boy’s teams, but the Warhawks were
under contract to Belle Plaine. Tri-
County was there and competed
hard, but the Trojans are very short
in number. Spencer Steinke was the
top point getter for the Trojans in
this meet. I have not received any results
from the North Mahaska meets.
I have been able to get to the
golf course three times last week. I
am still in the spring training mode
and top out at about six holes. I was
going to stretch it out to nine Saturday
morning, but the rain came and
I called it a round after five holes.
Sunday afternoon I felt that I was
on pace to do nine holes, but a chilly
north wind and an aching back told
me that six holes would be enough.
Spring training is not over yet for
me.
Hooray! Opening day is here
and real baseball it back. The Sunday
night game doesn’t interest me
a whole lot, but if Bud Norris can be
as tough against the Rangers as he is
against the Cardinals the Astros just
might beat the Rangers. The Cardinals
open Monday night in Arizona
against the Snakes.
I loved watching the Hawkeyes
end Virginia’s home winning streak
this week and now the Hawks go
to the Big Apple. It may not be the
NCAA Tournament, but for the
Hawks, the final four in Madison
Square Garden is a big deal. I feel
good for Eric May, the only senior
on the team. He has stuck with it
through some tough times and he
gets to end on a high note.
Another observation that I have
made is that I think Adam Woodbury
should be on a five year plan. When
he uses up his four years of basketball,
he should take a fifth year to
play tight end for Kirk Ferentz. The
kid is tough and can take a beating.
But my guess is that he would rather
take a beating in the NBA for a few
million dollars.
The Cyclones have locked in
the Mayor for 20 million over the
next 10 years, and I would guess
that he will honor that. New Mexico
just signed Steve Alford to a 10
year contract as well and this week
Alford bolted for UCLA. So much
for contracts meaning much. UCLA
Tales of the
Ancient Sportsman
By Burdell Hensley
says that they are getting someone
from the same Indiana roots as John
Wooten, but Mr. Alford is no John
Wooten. John Wooten’s ego didn’t
even come close to the level of Steve
Alford.
We live in a time where folks my
age are downsizing. The Ancient-ess
and I discovered this week that we
don’t need to downsize, we need to
upsize. The problem became evident
this week as we had a head to head
meeting over the problem. And I
might add that she has a mighty hard
head. Oh well, she always did make
me see stars! The way I see it, we
are either going to have to find more
space, or we may have to wear protective
helmets in our small house.
How are your tax cuts coming?
My tax returns show that there were
only tax increases for me. I guess
that since I am a rich Republican, I
should have expected as much. Strap
it on folks, it will only get worse.
Your tax dollars gave the chosen
one a golf vacation with the Tiger
and if you really want to stir the pot,
check what it cost the tax payer for
the spring break vacation for the
chosen daughters and their friends.
And there is not enough money to
provide tours of the White House to
school children. Very interesting.
Oh, I feel a good rant coming on
so I had better switch gears and take
a look at what happened in our yesterdays.
100 years ago: April 4, 1913-
The last game was played at the
William Powers Pool Hall in New
Sharon Saturday evening. The room
was vacated and the property sold.
(Sports news was hard to find 100
years ago.)
75 years ago: April 5, 1938-
Moravia tops Eddyville 5-2 in the
season opener. Carl Simmers was
the pitcher for Eddyville and Charles
Wilcox had a pair of hits for the Eddies.
April 6 – Deep River edges
What Cheer 2-1 in the baseball
opener. Pringle was the What Cheer
pitcher. What Cheer’s run came on a
single by Gutknecht and a fielder’s
choice.
50 years ago: April 2, 1963- Davis
Eidahl and Harold DeBie were
named the outstanding players on
this year’s Central College basketball
team. April 4- Pella Christian
used the two-hit pitching of Sandy
DeHaan to blank Fremont 3-0. Case
DeHaan and Sandy DeHaan had RBI
hits for PC. Denny Life and Lee had
the Fremont hits. April 5- Fremont
shells Eddyville 7-3. Bob Swanson
smashed a three run homer and a
double and Denny Life cracked a
double and two singles to lead the
Cats. Swanson pitched the win and
fanned 15 batters. Jim Powell doubled
and Fred Swim added to singles
to lead Eddyville.
25 years ago: April 4, 1988-
Eddyville’s 4 X 100 relay team of
Shawn Sheldon, Chris Harr, Lyall
Davis and Troy Lobberecht took
first place at the Dickinson Relays
in Cedar Falls. The same quartet
was fourth in the 4 X 200. April 6-
The Eddyville girls were second at
Monroe. Holly Barnes won the 800
and Lisa Allgood won the 100 meter
hurdles to lead the Rockets.
the spring time coming.
on March 29th.
Last Saturday afternoon the
American Legion Auxiliary hosted
an Easter egg hunt. Due to the rain it
was held in the Legion Hall instead
of at the park. All of the kids enjoyed
gathering eggs and then having
refreshments.
Last Saturday my gang was at the
Myles, and Cael Grove to celebrate
Feb. birthdays and Easter. The rain
stopped at the right time and we were
able to have our Easter egg hunt outside.
For supper Dan grilled brats,
Ponderings
of the Heart
By: Jane Green Larson
Our son Joe came through the ten hour surgery last Friday...indeed I can
say once again, “It truly was a Good Friday. The Lord used the surgeon to
remove Joe’s complete stomach and a portion of his intestine out, and attach
a tube from his esophagus to his intestine.” He continues to be in much
pain and needs medical care and much rest, but the prognosis was good...
and as he continues to work at getting well, our hearts are filled with praise
to our Heavenly Father. When I went to Des Moines, I took along a little
book given to me by a cousin, June Rice some time ago. I read it at different
times. It is written by a former resident of Delta named Dorothy M. Keck
Baird. It is a precious book that offers many poems of her thoughts of God
and this truly was an inspiration to my heart. I happened on one of these
poems and it reads like this, “Dear God, we often wonder, why this pain we
have to bear? So we pray for understanding since we know you truly care.
You have promised love and courage, our burdens you will bear. You send
us strength and patience, when we come to you in prayer. Help us to trust
you Jesus, even when it’s so hard to do, For you will never leave us and your
promises prove true.”
Thank you, Readers, for your prayers on behalf of our son. I ask that
you continue to do so, Only the Lord knows what lies ahead, but one thing
I know is, “His grace is sufficient!” May our Heavenly Father continue to
bless your lives!”
Deep River News
By: Janet Rauch
Share your Deep River news: 641-595-3011
Kenny and I stopped and got
our breakfast from the firemen after
church SUnday. It was really good!
There was hardly any place to park
so they had a good turnout.
Delores Schmidt called and said
she is getting therapy at the nursing
home in Montezuma again. She
sounded better so hope she is on her
way to recovery.
Shelby, my daughter, and I took
Myla shopping. She wanted to eat at
McDonalds and get a happy meal.
Kenny has been under the weather
this week with a sore throat and
cold.
Wednesday Arlene Rauch and I
had music at senior dining. They had
a really good meal with no herbs,
just good chicken.
Kenny Thorpe went to What
Cheer, Sigourney and Osklaoosa
Tuesday and visited with friends
and shopped. Wednesday he went to
hear Arlene and I and have lunch.
He calls us the woodpecker and the
Meadow Lark. He’s the berries. He
sat with KEnny and I and Charlie
Williams came and sat with also.
Norm Axmear come to our table too.
He has been going to see Delores
often.
Thursday evening I visited Delores
Schmidt in the Monte home.
She was just finishing her therapy.
When I left she was able to walk out
to supper. Norm was coming for the
evening.
I met Louise and Randy Provin
at Courney’s Shop getting hair cuts
Thursday afternoon. I use to work
with heart the Star years ago. She
brought me two nice cookbooks. Ellen
Zimmeman was there and I had a
good visit with her too.
Bob Rauch, my son, went to
Osklaoosa to see about his knee
replacement the 8th. He has really
been miserable with it so will be glad
to have it fixed. Steve has to have his
replaced also. He lives in Iowa City.
Kenny and I went to Grinnell and
shopped Saturday. I like to check out
The Second Mile while I’m there.
We ate breakfast at Hardees and I
visited with a lady who is a friend
of one who recognized me as the
one who write the Deep River News
column. She wondered if I displayed
all my cookbooks. I have several
shelves in different rooms and I had
to put some in plastic tubs as Kenny
said they were going to ruin the floor
with all that weight. I was so tickled
this lady likes my column and visited
with someone else in Monte who
looks forward to reading it. I love to
hear from people.
We were invited to Donna’s
daughter Bev’s for Easter dinner but
Kenny was so sick we didn’t even go
to church. I really appreciated the invite
though. She was having several
others. Donna and Jim went there.
Kenny’s sister, Dorothy Talbert,
is in Oskaloosa Hospital again with
the same complications. He will
have to get over his epicudics before
to get his income taxes done and get
his truck.
I visited with Mary and Bob
Wolf on Monday in Montezuma.
on her birthday and brought dinner,
a birthday cake and gifts. They
stayed and watched a game on TV
the sprouts. She is Bob and Carolyn
Brennan’s granddaughter. Jaidyn
hunt. Mary filled three a piece with
money and candy, Brad and Nicky
hid them. After the hunt, they had a
birthday party for Keaton’s 9th birthday.
THey will have another party on
the day. Peggy Sue’s daughter was
not feeling good and had been to the
Speech Spotlight
By:Kylie Davis
THORNBURG -This week I would like to introduce to Miss Jackie
Moore. Jackie has
been involved in
speech for four
years. Her favorite
part about speech
is making people
laugh and having
a good time. This
year she has been
involved in group
speech and choral
reading and the
one act play. She
was also involved
in Individual
Speech. In
individual Speech
she did a poetry
piece and a story
telling speech that
she is going to
All-State in. Jackie said,” Speech has helped me with speaking in front of
people. I am in a college class called public speaking right now and I think
speech has helped me with being comfortable in front of people.”
Well Jackie keep up your good work and good luck at All-State.
Senior Spotlight
by Kylie Davis
This week I would
like to introduce to you miss
Sarah Virginia Striegel.
Sarah was born on May
6, in Ottumwa. She is
the daughter of Mike and
Suzette, the younger sister
to Adam and the older sister
to Megan. Sarah lives on a
farm with her family near
What Cheer.
Some of Sarah’s
favorites include the color
blue, spaghetti and grape
juice and she loves to listen
to country music. In high
school, Sarah has been
involved in Cross Country,
Track & Field, FFA, 4-H,
Student Council, National
Honor Society, Speech and
Drama.
If you ever wanted to hang out with Sarah you would either be
running along side her, helping her work on and around the farm or training
show stock. Sarah’s favorite memory from High School was when staying
in a sketchy motel in Illinois on the way out to National FFA Convention
her senior year and she made the power go out, because she wanted to
charge her cell phone. The outlet had sparked, the charger was scorched,
and she screamed insanely loud and woke everyone up.
When asking Sarah what she would miss most was the farm,
the area, and the people. Who knows what the future has in store for me,
all I know is the past brought me to where I am today, and for that I am
thankful. Sarah’s favorite quote is, “We are what we believe we are.” -C.S.
Lewis. Sarah plans to attend Iowa State University majoring in Agriculture
Education, with possible minors in Agriculture Communication and Global
Resource Systems. Sarah is really looking forward to seeing more of the
world and gaining a new perspective of life.
Good Luck, Sarah, with the rest of high school and your future.
April is Community Banking
Month and County Bank is joining
with members of the Independent
Community Bankers of America
(ICBA) to celebrate the vital role
that community banks serve in the
economic, civic and cultural life
of their communities in cities and
towns throughout America.
FDIC Chairman Martin Gruenberg
commented in a speech at the
recent ICBA national meeting that
“from the standpoint of both filling a
critical niche in our financial system
and providing access to mainstream
financial services in communities all
over our country, community banks
are in some measure irreplaceable.”
He went on to say that without community
banks many communities
– especially in small towns and rural
areas – would have no access to
FDIC-insured banks.
Community banks in Iowa recognize
ICBA Community Banking
Month in a variety of ways.
Tom Bates, president of County
Bank headquartered in Sigourney
said “Community Banking Month
gives us a special opportunity to
welcome our customers, future customers
and neighbors to visit one of
our 5 convenient locations in Sigourney,
Deep River, Gibson, Keswick
and Williamsburg. It’s a time we
can share our thanks for their loyalty
and recognize the communities we
proudly serve.”
Community Banking Month has
become a tradition for County Bank
to invite the community to stop by
one of their banking locations for a
cup of coffee and a cookie on any
Friday during April. “It’s also an opportunity
to meet and talk with one
of our personal bankers or a loan
officer to let us know how we can
provide them with the personalized
customer service only a community
bank can provide and be a part of
helping them meet their financial
goals,” said Bates. “Our friendly
staff will be glad to talk about an account
With the pivotal losses of
Casey Sieren, Trevor Draisey
and Ben Horras, the shoulders
of the remaining Keota track
and field athletes with have
more weight upon them in the
2013 season.
The losses of the aforementioned
three mean that head
coach Larry Lyle will be looking
for a pair of middle distance
runners, a sprinter and a discus
thrower to step up for the
Eagles this spring.
Senior Brian Berg is now
in his last go-around on the
oval and will be counted on
to improve his already speedy
100-meter dash and 200-meter
dash time for this season. Berg,
team (left to right, front to back): Paden Uphold, Isaiah Hahn, Ben Horras, Zach Mousel, Ryan
Longview with a hattrick plus
a goal, House and Vlad Munger
each scored twice and Streigle
added one goal. The Sigourney
Treecare offensive attack was
led by Brock Halleran with a
hattrick plus two goals, Ricky
Danowsky added two scores
and Nate Schuster rounded
out the scoring with one goal.
Following is a list of the final
official stats for the league.
The first number is the total
goals scored, the number in
parentheses is total hattricks
and the final number is goals
allowed per period when in
goal.
1. Ian Terfehn, 33 (6) 1.7;
2. Tristan Bell, 25 (5) 2.2; 3.
Stacia Hammes, 22 (4) 1.8; 4.
who ran a season-best 12.3 in
the 100 and 25.12 in the 200
during his junior year, will be
one of Keota’s top sprinters
and will likely be called upon
in any number of relay events
for the Eagles.
One individual that should
provide the team with a steady
diet of medals is Kolton Greiner.
Greiner’s 2012 100-meter dash
time of 11.23 seconds makes
him one of the top returning
runners in the event that
the SICL has to offer. You
can be sure to see Greiner in
the 4x100 relay, along with
Berg and junior Luke Lyle.
The Eagles will have to find a
fourth runner to step up in the
team’s sprint relays after graduation
ran its course. One runner
who has the potential to fill
that void is Shane Gibson, who
was clocked at 12.42 last year
in the 100.
Expect to see a lot of Luke
Lyle this spring, as he will be
Brock Halleran, 20 (2) 2.1; 5.
Ben House, 19 (3) 1.8; 6. Nick
Goad, 17 (1) .09; 7. Jordan
Van Ee, 14 (2) 1.8; 8. Trey
Shafranek, 12 (2) 1.3; 9. Ricky
Danowsky, 11 (0) 1.8; 10. Nate
Schuster, 8 (0) 1.7; 11-12 tie:
Lilly Reeves, 6 (0) 1.7 and
Maddie Schwenke, 6 (0) 1.0;
13. Vlad Munger, 5 (0) 2.5; 14.
Ryleigh Leonard, 4 (0) 2.8; 15.
Cade Streigle, 3 (0) 2.8; 16.
Julia Van Ee, 2 (0) 1.7; 17-21
tie: Sebastian Arduser, 1 (0)
1.0; Giddeon Goff, 1 (0) 1.7;
Madysen Leonard, 1 (0) 1.5;
pushing to lower his 200 time
of 24.75.
Lyle and Greiner alone will
make the Keota 4x400 relay a
good one, but whether or not
the crew can improve on last
year’s 3:38.83 time will depend
on how the other two runners
can perform. Last year’s dominant
4x800 relay will also take
a hit after the losses of Sieren
and Draisey. Greiner and Lyle
also joined those two and ran a
season-best 8:24.82 at Waco.
Keota also has the potential
to field a strong shuttle hurdle
relay with Gibson, Lyle and
Greiner, but will once again
need to replace Casey Sieren.
The Eagles do return two
of their top throwers in Ethan
Lyle and Sam Ollinger. Ollinger
edged Lyle in both the shot
and discus last year, throwing
35’ even in the shot and 83’
3.5’’ in the discus. Lyle wasn’t
far behind though, and will be
sure to improve on his 30’ 6’’
shot put mark and 75’ 2’’ discus
throw.
Looking ahead to the season
presents some question marks
for Larry Lyle’s squad, the good
thing though, is that his group
of upperclassmen will eliminate
those questions by answering
them on the track.
Aiden Schuster, 1 (0) 1.9; Ty
Shafranek, 1 (0) 1.6.
In the opening game, the
Orabs came away with a 14-6
triumph over Seller’s Racing.
Blaine Gretter led the Orabs
a goal, Jeremiah Green added
a hattrick plus a goal, Eddie
and Alana Fisher rounded out
the scoring with one tally.
Justin DeKleine paced Sellers
with a hattrick plus a goal and
Sebastian Tinnes and Jeremiah
Alspach each scored once.
The finale was a nail biter
all the way through with the
Hawkeyes finally posting a 10-8
win over the Trojans. Allen
Denny topped the Hawkeye
offense with a hattrick plus a
goal, Isaac Utterback added a
hattrick, Wesley Yoder scored
two goals and Tanner Bos tallied
once. Will Magill’s hattrick
led the way for the Trojans, Val
Magill and Eric Meiners each
added two scores and Dalton
Price scored once.
Panthers Take A Bite Out of
Trojans at Ruritan Relays
By Adam Meier,
Regional Sports Editor
3/28/13
Originally scheduled for
last Monday, Pekin’s Ruritan
Relays was forced to reschedule
and instead took place on
Thursday.
Along with the host Panthers,
Lone Tree, Cardinal, Waco and
Tri-County all headed to Pekin
to compete. Van Buren and
Belle Plaine were originally
scheduled to attend, but had
other meet conflicts.
Using strong performances
in both individual and relay
events, along with field events,
the Panthers stormed away
to win the meet convincingly,
scoring 194 points, including
ten event titles. Lone Tree finished
in second with 115.
Pekin crowned champions
in two of the four field events
and had place winners in the
other two. Keaton Winn won
the high jump with a mark of
5’ 10’’, while Chase Earnest
finished tied for second at 5’
8’’. Eric Adam and Jared Bond
finished one-two in the shot
put. Adam’s throw of 48’ 3’’
was easily enough to win, while
Bond finished in second with
a toss of 43’ 4’’. In the discus,
Bond came in second by throwing
124’ 4’’, and Matthew Jones
finished in third with a throw of
111’ 3’’. The Panthers finished
third and fourth in the long
jump as well. Colton Lanman
finished in third with a leap
of 17’ 7’’, and Chase Copeland
came in fourth at 17’ 2.5’’.
Copeland, a freshman, won
the highly competitive 100meter
dash with a time of 11.8
seconds. In the 400-meter dash,
Graham Wittrock came in first
by over a second with a time
of 55.8 seconds. Junior Cade
Millikin finished second in the
800-meter run at 2:17.3, while
Cole Reighard finished in fourth
at 2:27.3. Austin Farriss won
the 1600 with a time of 5:20.5,
while Thomas Slaney finished
fourth at 5:29.9. Farriss also
finished in front in the 3200,
coming in with a time of 11:13.
Clayton Essary finished in second
with a time of 12:09.
In the 400 hurdles, Cory
Loyd took gold with a time of
1:01.29, while Tanner Adam
finished third at 1:02.29.
Three Pekin relay squads
also earned gold on Thursday:
distance medley, 4x100 and
4x800. Pekin’s medley time of
4:04.1 (Garrels, C. Wittrock,
Harper, G. Wittrock) was nearly
ten seconds quicker than
Cardinal’s second place time
of 4:13. In the 4x100, Kolby
Allsup, Garrels, Christian
Wittrock and Copeland finished
in 47.26 seconds. Lone
Tree finished second at 47.37.
Pekin’s 4x800 consisting of Eli
Harper, Graham Wittrock, Cole
Reighard and Cade Millikin
clocked in at 9:18, finishing
well ahead of its only other
opponent, Lone Tree.
“It was nice to finally get
on the track,” said Pekin head
coach Davis Eidahl. “This meet
helped us to see what our
lineup will be for next week. It
gave us a chance to run some
newcomers with our veterans.”
While the Trojans lack the
numbers of Eidahl’s Pekin
squad, Tri-County still managed
some solid results and
accumulated 41 points.
The Trojans’ sprint relays
each tallied good finishes. The
4x200 finished in second with
a time of 1:42.17, behind only
Cardinal. In the 4x100, the
Trojans clocked in at 49.01
seconds and finished fourth.
The Tri-County distance medley
finished in third with a time
of 4:50.
Spencer Steinke and Jake
Brumbaugh each ran well in
the open 200. Steinke finished
in second with a time of 24.29
seconds, while Brumbaugh, a
sophomore, finished fourth at
25.66 seconds.
In the 100-meter dash,
Steinke finished in fourth with
a time of 11.98 seconds. Tyron
Schilling finished fifth in the
3200-meter run with a time of
15:06.
Dalton Ehret also finished
fifth in the long jump with a
best leap of 15’ 10.5’’.
In the discus, both Kyle Leer
and Jake Brumbaugh eclipsed
100 feet. Leer finished in fifth
with a throw of 102’ 5’’, while
Brumbaugh threw 101’ 9’’.
The Trojans competed in
Tuesday’s coed meet in North
English and then run in Pekin
on Thursday. Another coed
meet on Monday, April 8, in
Lone Tree, is on deck for the
Trojans.
The Panthers host the Pekin
Invitational on Thursday, April
4, and then compete at Coe
College on Monday, April 8.
Adversity Creates a Difference-Maker in Harrison
By Adam Meier, Regional Sports Editor
Donte ‘Hammer’ Harrison is a lot
more than just a basketball player
and his story proves it.
At the age of 11, Hammer broke both
legs and was confined to a wheelchair
for a month, before enduring three
more months of grueling physical
therapy. As a result of the injury
and the everyday physical pain
that came with it, Harrison was
unable to play high school basketball
in his hometown of Brooklyn,
N.Y.
“The physical therapy and training
I had to do was extremely
hard,” the 26 year-old Harrison
said. “I couldn’t play ball in high
school because there was just too
much pain. The pain finally stopped
when I turn 17.”
As soon as Harrison was physically
healed and able to exercise at a high
level, Harrison picked up a basketball and
rarely put it down.
“I compare my situation to Forrest Gump a little
bit,” said Harrison. “When [Forrest] got rid of his leg
braces, all he wanted to do was run. I felt the same
way. I got stronger and stuck with it and now I’ve
played basketball in 55 countries with the Harlem
Globetrotters.”
Harrison, who is in his fourth season with the
Globetrotters, enrolled at Sullivan Community
College, N.Y., where he walked on to the basketball
team during his second year at the junior
college. That year, Harrison led Sullivan to an
undefeated 2007 season and the NJCAA Division
III Championship.
After his stint at Sullivan, Hammer played at
Hampton University, Va., where he led the Pirates
in field goal percentage and blocks in 2008-09, and
was the team’s second-leading
rebounder.
“When I was 17, I was 6’ 7’’ and
couldn’t dunk the ball,” Harrison
added. “Now I have a 38-inch
vertical due to my recovery and
training.”
Harrison, who is now 6’ 9’’,
says his go-to dunk is the windmill
and claims he could have
made some noise in the NBA
Dunk Contest.
“I think I could’ve brought
something creative the crowd had
never seen before,” Harrison said
about competing in a dunk contest.
“I’m not saying I’d win it, but
I’d definitely do something that
would get the fans excited.”
Getting the fans excited is what
Harrison thrives on nowadays.
The main premise of the Harlem Globetrotters
is getting the fans involved and making
them feel like part of the show. Helping
change lives, Harrison says, is what
makes his career as a Globetrotter so
rewarding.
“We (Globetrotters) want to be considered
ambassadors of goodwill,
not just basketball players,” said
Harrison. “Growing up, I never got
the chance to listen to a message
from a celebrity figure I looked up
to. My dad always taught me about
hard work, but I didn’t even learn
about college until I was 17. Our
goal is to leave a lasting impression
on kids and let them know they can
accomplish anything they want.”
Donte ‘Hammer’ Harrison has
soared over adversity and has done
more than make a name for himself;
he has made a difference. In the game
of basketball, difference-makers tend to
be the ones that score the most points or
dish out the most assists, but Harrison is the
kind of difference-maker that makes an impact on
a much more important level; by positively influencing
youth across the globe.
When he’s not on tour with the Globetrotters
eight months out of the year, Harrison seeks thrills
at an altitude much higher than ten feet above the
ground.
“My dad and I go skydiving sometimes,” said
Harrison. “I never get nervous; not even the first
time. It’s really peaceful up in the air and the view
is just amazing.”
The view of the world at 14,000 feet in the air
may sound more spectacular than the one he gets in
the arena throwing down a monster ally-oop, but to
Hammer, seeing the awe-struck faces of the children
at a Globetrotter’s game is the best view of all.
The Sigourney and English
Valleys’ boys finally got their
seasons started last Thursday
in Belle Plaine.
After a period of frigid and
snowy conditions, Mother
Nature blessed the area with an
opportunity to compete in some
mild spring weather.
The Savages took full advantage
of the nice conditions and
finished the evening in second
out of eight teams in Class B
with 131 points. Lynnville-Sully
took first with 147.
Sigourney came in first in
four events on Thursday; two of
which were relays.
The Savages smoked the field
in the 4x800 relay. The team
of Alex Shadley, David Wehr,
Jeremiah Green and Dalton
Webster finished 24 seconds
ahead of Twin Cedars, finishing
with a time of 9:00.72.
Sigourney also came out on top
in the distance medley. With
