have always admired him for his independent
spirit and his almost blind support for anyone
trying to do anything that is good for Palm
Springs. We are grateful to Dick for his early
and continuing support in the birth of our now
7 year old LIVE Magazine. Dick was our first
advertiser and is one of the most unassuming
people we know! Hardly anyone really knows
everything that he has done to improve our
lives here in Palm Springs because he modestly
never presses for recognition. Michael Collins
interviewed Dick a couple of years ago for
The Center and presented one of the most
comprehensive articles about Dick and his
influence. In Honor of Streetbar’s upcoming Tuesday August 27th, all day
22nd Anniversary celebration, we are publishing Michael’s interview of Dick.
The story is about the early times on Arenas Road and his involvement at
The Center, but almost every agency in this town has their own story of early
involvement and many rescues from Dick Haskamp! Long may Dick and his
Streetbar reign!
How Dick Haskamp Changed
Arenas Road
By: Michael Collins
August 27th will mark the twenty-second anniversary of the day Dick
Haskamp took money from a small inheritance and along with his friend
Hank Morgan, bought a restaurant and bar called “Streetbar Named Desire.”
“I still get mail with that name on it,” he laughs. “It’s like fingernails on a
chalkboard.”
Arenas Road between Indian Canyon and Encilia was a whole lot different in 1991.
Spurline was a consignment shop, Rainbow Bar and Grill was a pool hall and
Hunters housed a print shop and a vacuum cleaner store.
There were several “mixed” restaurant/bars in the city limits, but the real
gay-with-a-capital-gclubs like Rock’s, CC Construction and Daddy Warbucks
were all in Cathedral City.
“As soon as we took over, business went crazy because there were no other
gay bars in Palm Springs,” Dick remembers. “We were the first in the city
and the first gay-owned business on the street. Everything grew up around
us and now everything on this block is gay except Circle K.”
Two decades later, Streetbar is almost double the size. The pool table
and kitchen are gone and its reputation among those of the local LGBT
persuasion who just might enjoy an occasional cocktail in an affable
environment has been solidified.
Haskamp’s secret to success? “I have the best staff. We pour the best drink
at the best price. We provide lots of entertainment. There’s never a cover
and we keep the temperature at 75 degrees in the summer.”
While he gives most of the credit to his team of 19 and a huge electric bill,
others say it’s because Dick just can’t say no.
“He doesn’t make a big deal of it but whenever charities, local magazines
and non-profits, need something, they always come to Dick,” says Vince
Palmer, a bartender and friend of thirty years.
“Sometimes it’s never even mentioned, it’s just what he does.”
Whether he’s supplying the liquor and service for a fundraiser, making
a financial contribution or holding an in-house event, it’s pretty well
known that Dick can be counted on to help. One of the bar’s regulars even
suggested that since Haskamp gives so much to local charities, “imbibing at
Streetbar should be the equivalent of filing for a charitable deduction.”
“That’s kind of how I was raised,” he says. “My parents were middle class
but they were always involved and very generous. It’s also not bad for
business. It helps us stay engaged in the community and our name is always
out there.”
Dick with co-publisher of LIVE Magazine,Juli Ragsdale.
Dick mastered the art of friendly service in the early 70’s and through the
80’s working as a bartender in various establishments around Santa Monica.
He calls it a pretty serendipitous life. There was the beach, parties and plenty
of friends.
He had moved there from a blue-collar suburb of Detroit called Lincoln Park.
His father was a steel-worker, his mother a housewife. He would serve in the
Army; graduate from Eastern Michigan University with a degree in theater
arts and then move to sunny California where he joined some friends in
discovering what the 70’s gay scene was all about.
In 1995, with the bar going into its fourth year, Hank Morgan died suddenly
from a brain hemorrhage. Dick remembers it as a huge shock and tough to
get over. He also realized that from then on, Streetbar would be the sum
total of his singular vision.
He became more involved, serving on boards of the Gay Rodeo Association,
Desert Business Association, Aids Assistance Program and the Gay Tourism
Council.
He’s also supported The Center from the day it opened in 2001 as a senior
center. When the mission expanded to include the entire LGBT community,
he became even more enthusiastic. Dick now serves on the board of
directors of The Center.
“In the beginning, supporting the Golden Rainbow Senior Center was a
natural because it was serving many of my customers,” he says. “Now it has
a broader vision and it’s become so well run, I’m proud to be involved.”
The Center’s past executive director, John O’Connor is just one of many in
the LGBT community that is grateful, appreciative and impressed.
“One thing about Dick is that he’s really down with the people, he says. “He
gives money, he raises money. He’s a real community based guy who is very
accessible and influential. I think he’s universally loved in this community.”
Palm Springs Modernism Week Hosts
Fall Season Kick-Off Weekend
Events to Include Double Decker Bus Tours Of City’s
Architecturally Significant Homes & Structures
Modernism Week will once again coordinate a fall “season kick-off” over
the Columbus Day holiday weekend (October 11-14, 2013). The three-day
weekend’s schedule of events will include architectural tours, a retro “yard”
sale, a swanky cocktail party, Modernism Week Double Decker Bus Tours,
and more.
“We’re thrilled to coordinate our October holiday weekend events with the
efforts of other local partner organizations to produce this Fall Season
Kick-Off, which has grown over the last two years into a wonderful preview
of Modernism Week,” says Lisa Vossler Smith, Executive Director of Palm
Springs Modernism Week. “We hope that desert residents and visitors will
enjoy this opportunity to experience the same quality of tours and events,
but without the larger crowds of our main event in Spring.”
The Double Decker Bus Tours will highlight both of the predominant architectural
styles of Palm Springs: Mid-Century Modern and Desert Spanish.
The tour includes homes of the ‘rich and famous’ such as Frank Sinatra,
Elvis Presley, and Cary Grant, all of whom resided in visually striking and
historically significant homes. The desert Spanish roots of Palm Springs
are highlighted of private estates, Il Paradiso and Invernada. Many of the
city’s architecturally significant civic and commercial buildings are also a
part of the tour, including the iconic Palm Springs Visitor Center (Frey &
Chambers’ 1963 Tramway Gas Station).
Tours will depart from the Palm Springs Hilton Hotel, and advance reservations
are required. Participation in events and tours helps support the
mission of Palm Springs Modernism Week, a 501 (c)(3) organization. Local
partner organizations include Palm Springs Preservation Foundation,
Palm Springs Art Museum’s Architecture & Design Council, Palm Springs
Historical Society, and Paul Kaplan Group’s “Modernism Yard Sale.”
Del Shores’ new film,
SOUTHERN BAPTIST SISSIES
To Open 2013 Edition of Cinema Diverse:
The Palm Springs Gay and Lesbian Film Festival.
Cinema Diverse: The Palm Springs Gay and Lesbian Film Festival
announced today that SOUTHERN BAPTIST SISSIES, Del Shores’
latest film, will open this year’s festival, which runs from September
19th through September 22nd at the Camelot Theatres in Palm
Springs.
“We are once again thrilled to have the opportunity to open our festival
with one of Del’s creations,” said Michael C. Green, Festival Director.
“The very first edition of Cinema Diverse featured preview screenings
of Del’s “Sordid Lives: The Series,” and of course Camelot Theatres
and the Palm Springs Cultural Center have a long history with Del,
having screened his film “Sordid Lives” for over two years, and having
hosted both the Ten Year anniversary of “Sordid Lives” and the Palm
Springs Premiere of “Blues for Willadean” at the Camelot.”The film,
SOUTHERN BAPTIST SISSIES is an adaptation of Del Shores’
award-winning 2000 play by the same name. “The film,” Shores says,
“Is really an actual capturing of the play in the theatre, and on the
stage. It allows the film audience to be a part of the electricity and
intimacy of the original theatrical experience.”
SOUTHERN BAPTIST SISSIES follows the journey of four gay boys
growing up in the Southern Baptist Church. In it, writer/director Del
Shores explores the conflict between the caustic rhetoric of dogmatic
religion, and the fragile development of adolescent homosexuality.
Shores draws the audience into the fire, allowing them to laugh one
minute and cry the next, as they experience complicated emotions
revealed from all sides – the confused child, the struggling adolescent
and the angry and damaged adult.
Mark Lee Fuller (Emerson Collins), the first of the four boys, acts
as both a storyteller and a participant in the plot. He questions the
teachings of the church from an early age, and exposes the harsh and
judgmental words of the Pastor (Newell Alexander) that weighed so
heavily on the four adolescents. The second boy, Andrew (Matthew
Scott Montgomery), struggles mightily with his emerging feelings,
and prays harder and harder for God to take his homosexuality away.
Benny (Willam Belli), the most flamboyant of the boys, embraces his
own true nature early on and becomes a drag entertainer in Dallas.
The last of the quarter, T.J. (Luke Stratte-McClure), Mark’s first love,
fights his own feelings, rejects and judges Mark, and attempts to live a
normal life with a woman.
Mark’s Mother (Bobbie Eakes) encourages him to accept Jesus so he
will not go to hell. Benny’s Grandmother (Ann Walker) worries that her
sissified grandson doesn’t act like other normal little boys. Andrew’s
Mother (Rosemary Alexander) admits she does not want her son to be
one of them.
Two worn out barflies, Preston “Peanut” LeRoy (Leslie Jordan) and
Odette Annette Barnett (Dale Dickey), round out the cast. They,
accompanied by a pianist, act as third-party observers and sometimes
narrators. Their witty banter and hilarious storytelling adds dimension
to the action, but also serves to hide their own pain.
“Del Shores has served up yet another masterpiece,” Green
continued. “And we are proud to be a part of his journey.”
LEGENDARY FUNNY MAN
JERRY HALLIDAY
PREMIERING AT AZUL PALM SPRINGS LABOR DAY WEEKEND
Direct from Las Vegas appearing Sat & Sun nights with
puppets Sista Girl, Granny Goodtimes, and the Not So Holy
Nun!
Palm Springs, CA - August 19, 2013: What becomes a diva most?
A man with his hand up her dress putting words in her mouth.
The diva in this case is the world’s most outrageous puppet diva
yet---the fresh, funny, fabulous “Sista Girl”, a dangerous doll who
demolishes audiences with comedy dynamite wherever she
appears and one of the many devastating dames on the arm of
comedian Jerry Halliday.
View our videos on YouTube:http://tinyurl.com/keqzapn
Famed Comedian, Jerry Halliday, will bring to life 3 of his most
popular puppet characters, Sista Girl, Granny Goodtimes, and
the Not So Holy Nun at Azul Tapas Lounge located at 369 N. Palm
Canyon Drive in Downtown Palm Springs, this Labor Day Weekend.
Show times are Saturday, August 31 at 8:30pm and Sunday,
September 1 at 7:30pm and tickets are just $15. Reservations are
strongly suggested by calling 760.325.5533.
Jerry Halliday has polished his comedy act to hilarious perfection
at the Rio, the Riviera, Bally’s and Harrah’s in Las Vegas, Reno
and Atlantic City, as well as cruise ships and theaters world-wide.
Additionally, Jerry has long been a hit on the gay nightclub circuit
in Key West, Ft. Lauderdale, Fire Island, Rehoboth Beach, Russian
River, Douglas Dunes and more. His show broke box office records
in three ten-week summer seasons in Provincetown, MA.
A world-class puppet designer, Jerry makes all his own puppets
and brings them to astonishing life with impressive artistry. Even
when in full view of the audience, Jerry is so accomplished at
manipulating his puppets that he virtually disappears while his
characters become absolutely alive as they command the full
attention of his mesmerized spectators.
After seeing Jerry’s puppet impression of herself, Carol Channing
said in a TV interview “He’s simply marvelous and of course I’m
flattered! And she’s so CUTE, that puppet!” He was also a hit on
the Joan Rivers television show with his Joan Rivers puppet, and
performed a look-alike puppet of Rip Taylor appearing live with Mr.
Taylor himself on TV’s “Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous.”
The holiday weekend kicks off with the highly popular vocalist,
Mona Caywood, performing “Gold Standard” on Friday, August 30
at 8pm with no cover.
Azul is located in the heart of Downtown Palm Springs and is an
entertainment hotspot in the Coachella Valley. Featuring small
plates, appetizers, entrees, weekday dinner specials, Happy Hour
all the time, and “the best patio in downtown”, Azul is the place to
What happens when a Midwestern boy, raised in
the world of two seasons, winter and construction,
moves to Palm Springs? If you are Terry Hastings,
you begin to photograph wind and water.
As a child Terry had an explorer’s sensibility. Why
this? Why that? Inquisitive and creative, he found
himself with a degree in theater. But grease paint
gave way to photography. Terry began shooting
fashion – first for his own clothing line, then editorial
for publications such as InStyle and Horizon. As his
commercial work expanded, Terry’s eye for drama
was put to good use. His artistic sensibilities kicked in
and Terry began to explore the art of photography.
Terry melded performance and photography in his
work. Terry’s exploration was in texture, color and
light. In one of his first gallery shows, Terry captured
nudes with wind swept fabric along the desert dunes.
It was Terry capturing the movement of the wind and
earth.
His next series focused on swimming pool. The work
explored water with figures caught in the distortion
of water and light. “For me the distortion of the figure
creates a surreal serenity,”stated Terry. “The model
is beautiful but it is the noise of the water that is
captured.”
Terry’s latest series, “Koi Pond,” opens Thursday
August 29th 4 - 6 p.m. at Wang’s in the Desert. Using
printed and metallic fabric, paper fans, painted
umbrellas, flowers and banana leaves, Terry continues
his exploration of water and light.
“The koi pond series is an extension of my water
work. It begins with a swimmer and a pool. As the
artistic force, I add the drama to intensify the story of
the human psyche,” stated Terry. “My early work was
the teaser. This series is the next chapter in the story.”
Not content to be defined as a photographer, Terry
has begun to explore sculpture. Using his background
in theater and performing arts, Terry reinterprets
dance in metal. “Working in metal is new to me,”
said Terry. “I needed to learn a different set of skills
to create this sense of movement. I know how to
capture movement with my camera. I have even used
aluminum as the “canvas” for my photography. But
steel is not aluminum! This metal is a new challenge
with exciting possibilities.”
For Terry, this work adds another scene to the
unfolding story of Terry Hastings. Terry is represented
by Woodman Shimko Gallery, Palm Springs. For more
The Artwall Project
welcomes an exhibition
of Photography by Ed
O Bannon opening
Wednesday, Sept 4 through
October 8.
Ed is a prolific nature photographer and a second time artist to
the Artwall project. When asked about his work Ed says;
“Born and raised in Oregon. Growing up with a family of the
outdoors type, hunting fishing hiking etc…I was able to be in the
beautiful outdoors thru all the seasons. As an adult I am now able
to capture the beauty with my camera. Still today hiking camping is
a huge part of my life. I started with photography seriously about 5
years ago. I took a couple of classes to learn the functions of the
digital SLR camera. Followed by a few workshops. To my surprise
and the support of great friends I found a new niche in life. Its a
never ending process of learning with these cameras. I hope that
with my collection of landscape and still life photos. you will see
how my eye captures the world.”
The Artwall Project is in its 10th year introducing local artists
and fundraising for local charities. 20% of art sales will be
donated to the charity of the Artist’s choice. An Artist reception
for Ed OBannon will be held Wednesday, September 4 at 6 PM
at Streetbar. Street bar is located at 224 E. Arenas Rd in Palm
Springs CA. For more information contact drfar@aol.com

JOHN HEDGES
Hello all you FAbUloUS people.
Pinkie’s Place
Hello all you FABULOUS people out there. Well Kevin and I were delighted
last week when Bella da Ball and her partner Ken stopped by
our home for a short visit on Saturday before we went to the Jazz in the
Pines in Idyllwild. Then on Sunday we had the amazing Allison Annalora,
Ron and Bill stop by for a visit.
We love to have our friends stop by so let me know when you are in
Idyllwild…..OH I almost forgot that we had a very nice visit with Boyd and
Lisette, they came up for the day a couple weeks ago…..
I want to digress from my normal article on Idyllwild this week. There is
something that has been weighing heavy on my for a long time. With all
the gay teen suicide lately this has really been on my mind. Anything I
can do to help a young person realize that there are people all around
ready to help you out, no matter what you are going through.
Again I go back to my days in High School. I know you see Pinkie and
you think that I am someone that has it all together and must have been
the most popular person in school. There were over 2,ooo people in my
graduating class. I was just a face in the crowd and on top of that I was
in the marching
band with over 300 people. I played the tenor saxophone.
High school had to be the worse time of my life. I knew I was gay, but
how could I tell anyone, I would have been laughed at, even more than
I was. I never felt more alone in my life. On top of that I was brought up
going to a Southern Baptist Church twice every Sunday and then each
Wednesday night.
I don’t blame my parents for anything. They did not know I was gay. It
was my fault for not telling them. Of course that was over 25 years ago.
Times are much different now than when I was a teenager. Today I think I
could have told my parents and had more support.
Of course it was good finding out, as boys do, that there were others in
the youth group that were gay. Oh those camp fire days….lol……..
But the days of me having to stand in the corner to eat my lunch because
no one would let me sit with them. There were many times I thought
about suicide. Luckily for me, I kept looking forward and knew one day
things had to get better. Teens of today, I truly hope you know there are
people that are ready
and able to help you. Just ASK!
Today I am one of the luckiest people. I would never have thought way
back then that I would be legally married to a man, a wonderful man.
Have a home in Idyllwild which I truly love spending time here. I have
two wonderful dogs. I am a local entertainer and make people happy
when they see Pinkie. Even though right now I am going through a LOT
of medical issues I am surrounded with friends, my best friend Bella
da Ball, and all my entertainer friends, Melissa, Sheila, Jersey, Carol,
Charles, Doug, and many many more, sorry I cant list you all, but know
that you are part of me being here.
CRAIG RAMSAY
Craig Ramsay’s versatile background — as a former ballet
dancer, hockey player, fitness model, broadway actor and trained
contortionist — makes him one the most sought after fitness
experts in the business. Craig’s first foray into television was
Bravo’s Thintervention, and he has been engaging and charming
audiences ever since. Craig’s latest book “Anatomy of Stretching”
has reached international success as one of the most thorough,
informative and practical stretching books on the market. The
success of his online series “5 minute workout anywhere” on
ulive.com and his popular blog “Fit and Fabulous” has made him
an internationally recognized wellness guru with a mission to
transform as many lives with his motivation to move messages.
Why did you create your series “5 minute workout anywhere”?
I created my “5 minute workout anywhere” series to prove to viewers
“Your world is your gym”, move throughout your day with intensity,
intention and range of movement. Season 1 of my ulive.com series
provides you 25 different common locations that one might find
themselves in daily and with my fitness programming you can exercise
while performing your day.
How many episodes are in your series?
25 episodes, 25 different locations that you would NEVER think you can
get a workout in, and 25 fabulously outrageous outfits courtesy of my
partner “Stylist, Beauty Guru” Brandon Liberati www.BrandonLiberati.
com @brandonliberati
How long are the videos?
I wanted to keep them short, each one under 3 mins. A quick view with
a big message.
www.ulive.com/5-minute-workout-anywhere
What is your message?
The message in my “5 minute workout anywhere” series is to physically
move throughout your day with intensity, intension, and range of
movement. These combined help your body burn more calories,
achieve muscle fatigue and drive energy into your body and your day.
5 mins here, 5 mins there, it all adds up to a day of exercise.
Your “Shower Workout” is one of the many hilarious episodes that
has gone viral? Are you surprised?
I’M THRILLED! WHY NOT exercise safely in the shower?!?! It’s the
perfect time to get to know your sexy body and sensual self. Moving
and playing with water is sexy and I think sex sold this video and
inspired people to share via Facebook and Twitter. I say “spread the
work, share the video and inspire the world to move”.
Shower Workout: www.ulive.com/video/feel-the-power-in-the-shower
Did you anticipate your “Church Workout” causing the controversy
it has?
I did not. I consider myself connected to God and source energy,
visit Agape Church and did not expect religious groups to suggest my
intensions were anything but pure and supportive. These locations are
backdrops where I perform smart appropriate fitness programming. I want
to entertain people and provide them an undercover fitness take away.
My hope is that all people and communities recognize that I am trying
to deliver important messages through humor.
Church Workout: www.ulive.com/video/wholly-holy-church-workout
I’m shocked at your physical flexibility in your “Drive Thru Car
Wash” episode? How can someone gain that flexibility?
My latest book is called “Anatomy of Stretching”. I wrote it so everyone
has the chance to feel the freedom of movement the Broadway dancer
has. I have programs in the stretching book that will not only help you
gain flexibility but will also help you get to know your body and connect
with it. Autographed copies can be found via my website
www.craigramsayfitness.com
Drive Thru Car Wash: www.ulive.com/video/drive-through-carwash-workout
What is uLive?
uLive.com is a digital video site featuring both short and long form
content from Scripps Networks as well as original web series.
uLive.com is developing original lifestyle programming with a
unique voice in Food, Home and Travel categories as well as
expanding into Parenting and Wellness.
What made you interested in fitness and making it a career?
As a trained Ballet Dancer, Contortionist, and Broadway
performer fitness has always been a part of my life. I became
seriously invested in wellness when my mother Lenore became
ill with Fibromyalgia. This catapulted a career and passion for
taking care of people and their health. I believe in motivating them
to take care of themselves by giving them the tools and programs
necessary to achieve success.
You mentioned the importance of vulnerability during your
guest appearance on the Ricki Lake Show recently, can you
explain the importance of vulnerability?
Vulnerability is necessary to receive new information and
concepts that can help you achieve your goals. Find the fitness
and nutrition programs that will fit into your lifestyle. This means
trying new workout programs! Be Vulnerable to ask for help, be
open to receiving help. Remember, most people do you not read
minds, you have to ask for help.
Should someone share their goals with other people, loved
ones, their partner?
YES! Accountability will come from sharing your goals and your
program details with friends and family. Invite them to join this
journey. If you don’t have the support system with loved ones,
then social media websites such as twitter and Facebook can
be a great source of support. Remember, loved ones & friends
who are enables might not be onboard in the beginning of your
journey because it brings up their issues, give them some time.
Being an example of success and athleticism is the best way to
motivate others to start their personal journey of health/wellness.
You have been coined the “Motivator to Move”, motivate me
right here, right now?
The greatest motivational advice I can pass along to everyone
is believe YOU ARE AN ATHLETE! That needs to be your focus
and your goal. When you strive to be your most athletic self it is
extremely motivating plus you WILL see results weekly, monthly
and yearly. If weight change on the scale was your goal you WILL
achieve this when you stay on the course of performing like an
athlete. Remember a well rounded athlete has to put their health
and wellbeing first, this includes nutrition and sleep. When you
take care of yourself, you take care of your loved ones better.
An example of an athletic goal would be “I want to be able to do
my first 5k run in 3 months”.
I’ve heard you mention “fit fitness in”, how does a busy
person do that?
Treat yourself with the same respect you would a loved family
member or even a business client. You put them in your
schedule with their needs, it’s time to put the same attention
with scheduling your workouts and your healthy eating. If this is
selfish then good for you! You deserve to be selfish when it come
to taking care of yourself.
What if someone don’t have a gym membership? Have
responsibilities at home with taking care of a loved one?
Or cannot even afford a gym membership, what are their
options?
I personally believe everyone should have an “at home exercise
program” option. That eliminates the excuse “I can’t get to the
gym”. Your home is your gym “Home Sweat Home” baby! Your at
home workout can include stairs, jumping jacks, couch squats,
toe taps, dancer kick backs, the options are endless.
PHOTOS PROVIDED BY MPG

THIS PHOTO BY Gustavo Monroy, www.monroyphotoraphs.com
Perhaps my workout dvd “The Ultimate Perfect Workout” will be
your workout at home or my “Anatomy of Stretching” book or for
a more personalized program option from a Skype consultation
avec moi. Once you have an at home program in place, and if
you are a healthy individual that has consulted with a Doctor, then
you should aim to be physical most days of the week.
I read that you will be making a guest appearance on the
CBS hit sitcom “2 Broke Girls”, can you confirm this?
Yes, and Yes. Season 3, Episode 2, How incredibly lucky I am?!
I make a guest appearance in a sitcom with one of the most
talented casts I’ve ever had the pleasure of working with, Kat
Denning, Beth Behrs, Jennifer Coolidge, Garrett Morris, Jonathan
Kite, and Matthew Moy are brilliant comedic actors! and really
nice people.
I saw your “Man and Machine” 2014 Calendar cover shot. You
make July a very, very hot month! How did this cover come
about?
In 2011 I was chosen by StarWest Inc for your “Man and Machine”
(motorcycle and good-looking shirtless men) Calendar. I was
given the chilly October month, but one of my favorites. I love
autumn and I love Halloween. 2014 they put me on the cover and
made me feel real hot with the month of July. I feel so fortunate
to be on a cover of a calendar that has featured many top fitness
professionals.
Matt Bomer
www.imdb.com/name/nm0093589/
Matthew Staton “Matt” Bomer (born October
11, 1977) is an American film, stage and television
actor, best known from his role on White
Collar, which premiered in 2009. Making his television
debut with Guiding Light in 2001, Bomer received
notice with his recurring role in the NBC television series
Chuck as Bryce Larkin. Bomer has featured in supporting
roles in such films as the 2005 thriller Flightplan, the 2011
science fiction thriller In Time, and the 2012 comedy-drama
Magic Mike. He starred in the Dustin Lance Black play, 8, on
Broadway and at the Wilshire Ebell Theatre as Jeff Zarillo
– a plaintiff in the federal case that overturned California’s
Proposition 8.
Matt Bomer was born October 11, 1977 in Spring, Texas, as
the son of Sissi and John Bomer, a former Dallas Cowboys
draft pick.[6] He has two siblings and attended Klein High
School in Spring, Texas, with fellow future actor Lee Pace.
Pace and Bomer both acted at Houston's Alley Theatre, a
non-profit theatre company.
In 2001, Bomer graduated from Carnegie Mellon University
in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania with a Bachelor of Fine Arts
degree.
On October 23, 2009, Bomer began starring in White Collar,
which chronicles the partnership between a con artist, Neal
Caffrey (Bomer) and an FBI agent, Peter Burke (played by
Tim DeKay).[10] BuddyTV ranked him #1 on its list of "TV's
Sexiest Men of 2011".
In September 2011, Bomer starred in the Broadway debut
of Dustin Lance Black's play, 8, a staged re-enactment of
the federal trial that overturned California's Proposition
8.[12] In March 2012, he was featured in the Wilshire Ebell
Theatre production as well, portraying Jeff Zarillo, one of the
plaintiffs in the trial.
In October 2011, Bomer appeared in the science fiction
thriller film In Time, in which he played a 105-year-old
man, Henry Hamilton. In 2012, Bomer starred as Ken, a
male stripper, in the feature film Magic Mike. In 2013, he
will appear in Space Station 76, directed by Jack Plotnick.
[15] He has signed to appear in the 2013 adaptation of
Winter's Tale, directed by Akiva Goldsman.
In June 2013, Bomer was ranked at #2 on Logo's Hot 100
list, which is based on the votes of readers of the AfterEllen.com
and TheBacklot.com. Bomer was the list's highest
ranked man, behind only Jennifer Lawrence.

Channing TaTum
Brings
‘Magic Mike’
to Broadway
A musical based on the male stripper film Magic
Mike is due to open on Broadway, the movie’s lead
actor Channing Tatum has confirmed.
Tatum, whose early experience as a male stripper
led to the making of the film, tweeted: “#MagicMikeTheMusical
is headed to Broadway…”
The 2012 film, directed by Steven Soderbergh, follows
the life of 19-year-old Adam who enters the
world of male stripping for the first time, guided by
his mentor ‘Magic Mike’.
Tatum, 33, who plays Magic Mike in the film, will
produce the musical alongside Soderbergh, Reid
Carolin, Gregory Jacobs and Nick Wechsler.
Tomm Kitt and Brian Yorkey, creators of the awardwinning
rock musical Next to Normal, have been
signed to write the songs, while Roberto Aguirre-
Sacasa will write the musical’s plot.
The writer has previously penned episodes of Glee
and Big Love, and has also worked on the upcoming
American Psycho musical.
Magic Mike was self-financed by Tatum and Soderbergh
with an estimated budget of $7 million
(£4.5m).
It went on to become a surprise hit at the box office,
making $167 million (£109m) in global sales.
There’s nothing like being around a great group of talented guys and
putting on incredible shows throughout the year.”
“behind-the-scenes” activities at each show and during special projects
Diego favorite, the SDMGC holiday show. It will take place on Saturday,
Theatre in downtown San Diego.
“The holiday concert is always the greatest time to join the chorus family,”
noted Holt. “We’ll be working on our all-new, twisted version of The
Nutcracker along with some of the most beautiful holiday music ever
written for men’s chorus.”
Welcome to Candi Gram:
Jose Julio Sarria 1922 – 2013
“I want to be remembered not as the little Latin that sat on table tops
and sang “God Save the Nelly Queens.” I think I’ve done a little bit
more in this world. I want to be remembered for the good things that
I’ve done. I have achieved something. I was the first. I was the first
to organize a gay non- profit corporation in the state of California. I
did it. It was The League for Civil Education. And that became SIR,
the Society for Individual Rights.” Jose Julio Sarria
I had only been an Empress for a short time when I had the pleasure
of spending some very special one on one time with Mother Jose.
She was wonderful, gracious, and now I feel that she is the angel
that I can count on to watch over me. I will try to use her inspiration
as I travel on through the Imperial Court system. I shall never forget
that precious moment in time. With Candi Hugs and Kisses to the
Mother of Us All. Always in our HEARTS......
I met her at San Francisco’s Coronation 2013. Jose Julio Sarria
had a very colorful life and a trailblazer kicking doors open for our
community. To just name a few in 1961Jose declared himself a
candidate for the San Francisco Board of Supervisors and he was
running as an openly gay man! Jose ran his campaign from the
Black Cat Bar one of the local Bars at the time, there he made many
speech’s and talked to the gay community telling them to accept the
power they have if they only would work together Jose did not win
placing ninth out of almost 30 candidates and from that day on the
Gay community had voting power, In 1977 the first openly Gay man
to win an election in California Harvey Milk, was elected to the same
position Jose Julio Sarria ran for. In 1995 Jose appeared in the film
To Wong Foo playing one of the judges for the Drag Queen of the
year contest that opened the film and in the Castro District there is a
street named Jose Sarria Court his legacy will live on in history and
in all our hearts I Thank you Mother Jose Rest in peace we here will
carry on your work as you watch over us.
The Pride flag here in Hillcrest San Diego was lowered to half-staff in
honor of Jose Julio Sarria founder of the Imperial Court
An Evening of 41 Dresses:
the past as we look to the future, There will be Entertainment a no
PALM SPRINGS GAY MEN’S
CHORUS ANNOUNCES
INFO NIGHT/AUDITIONS
FOR THEIR 2013-2014 SEASON
The Palm Springs Gay Men’s Chorus will hold their Fall Information Night and Auditions on
Tuesday, August 27 at 6 p.m. at Temple Isaiah, 332 W. Alejo Road, Palm Springs, CA 92262.
Singers and non-singers are both welcome and encouraged to attend. The chorus is
always looking for volunteers to help behind the scenes. Men who are interested in
becoming a singing member will sing for the director. You may prepare a song for your
audition but that is not required. If you do, please bring sheet music in the correct key.
An accompanist will be provided. Weekly rehearsals are held on Tuesday evenings.
Introducing IN SEASON, a brand new small vocal ensemble that will be auditioned
from the membership of the large chorus in early September. This group will be more
performance-oriented and involve choreography and movement. Perfect for singers
who enjoy choral singing and musical theatre.
