II SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF THE

EUROPEAN TECHNICAL APPROVAL

1 Definition of product and intended use

General

DERBIGUM SP 3 FR on DERBICOAT HP 2,5 and DERBICOLOR 4 FR on DERBICOAT HP 2,5 double layer

roof waterproofing kits consists of two membranes, which are glued together with a cold adhesive and the under layer

is mechanically fastened to the substrate.

The membranes are placed on a mineral wool insulation board, which is also mechanically fastened to the substrate.

The mineral wool boards are not part of the kit.

Membranes

DERBIGUM SP 3 FR is a membrane made from polymer modified bitumen (APP) with a double-layer reinforcement

in the top layer of the membrane of approx. 150 g/m 2 non-woven polyester felt and 55 g/m 2 fibreglass. DERBIGUM

SP 3 FR has a total thickness of 3 mm and a weight of 3,1 kg/m 2 . Standard width is 1,10 m.

DERBICOLOR 4 FR is a membrane made from polymer modified bitumen (APP) with reinforcement complex in the

middle layer of the membrane of approx. 185 g/m 2 non-woven polyester felt and fibreglass. DERBICOLOR 4 FR has

a total thickness of 4 mm and a weight of 5,3 kg/m 2 . Standard width is 1,10 m.

DERBICOAT HP 2,5 is a membrane made from polymer-modified bitumen (APP) with reinforcement complex in the

middle layer of the membrane of approx. 100 g/m 2 non-woven polyester felt and fibreglass. DERBICOAT HP 2,5 has

a total thickness of 2,5 mm and a weight of 2,9 kg/m 2 . Standard width is 1,10 m.

The membranes are supplied in roll form.

The different membranes and fasteners which can compose the mechanically fastened flexible roof waterproofing

membrane kit (in the following referred to as MEFAWAME) and their properties are presented in Annexes 1 and

2. The holder of the ETA is fundamentally responsible of the MEFAWAME. The flexible membranes which

constitute the MEFAWAME are exclusively distributed by Imperbel S.A., subsidiary companies and distributors

All the fasteners conform to the specifications of the ETAG 006 (see Not1).

The flexible membranes and the fasteners are commercialised in separate transactions and assembled on site.

The means of fastening are presented in annex 4.

The insulation material is fastened in the centre of each insulation panel with fasteners. The number of fasteners

or fasteners and the type are defined in the national provisions and /or product certificates for the insulation.

Note In addition to the list of fasteners, other fasteners may also be used unless they are covered by a valid

ETA and with rectangular plate with dimensions of 82X40 (as example, the fasteners of the ETA 08/0285 from

AFAST BV – Guardian Fastening System- with plate size 82X40)

Adhesive

DERBIGUM SP 3 FR (and DERBICOLOR FR ) is glued to DERBICOAT HP 2,5 with DERBIBOND cold

adhesive, which is a bituminous adhesive

Insulation

The wind uplift test has been performed on a mineral wool substrate with compressibility at 10% of 50 kPa and

point load behaviour of 120 kPa, deformation 5 mm, and the values are valid for other insulation materials with

the same thickness (0 mm – 350 mm) and equal or higher compressibility and point load behaviour. The

insulation material is not part of the kit. The use of the insulation board as substrate for mechanically fastened

roof waterproofing is defined in national provisions.

Intended use

DERBIGUM SP 3 FR on DERBICOAT HP 2,5 and DERBICOLOR 4 FR on DERBICOAT HP 2,5 double layer

roof waterproofing kit is used for waterproof covering for sloped or flat roofs. The kits are specially designed for


mechanical fastening.

The load bearing elements are made from steel, concrete, lightweight concrete or wood. The MEFAWAME can be

installed directly on the substrate or on an insulation material. In the latter case the insulation material shall comply

with the requirements mentioned above.

In the manufacturer's technical dossier (MTD) 4 to this European technical approval (ETA) the manufacturer has

given information concerning the substrate, which the roof waterproofing is suitable for and on how these

substrates shall be pre-treated.

Assumed working life

The tests and assessment have been based on the assumption that the working life of DERBIGUM SP 3 FR on

DERBICOAT HP 2,5 and DERBICOLOR 4 FR on DERBICOAT HP 2,5 double layer roof waterproofing kits for the

above described intended use is at least 10 years. This cannot be understood as a guarantee given by Imperbel S.A,

subsidiary companies and distributors or ETA-Danmark A/S.

2 Characteristics of product and assessment

Characteristics of products and systems

The components of the roof waterproofing kit show the characteristic values with respect to the permissible

tolerances which are stated in the MTD to this ETA.

The chemical composition and the characteristic property values of the components of the kit and the

manufacturing methods are confidential and deposited with ETA-Danmark A/S.

The ETA is issued for the kit on the basis of the product composition deposited with ETA-Danmark A/S.

Changes to the components of the kit or in the production process of the components, which could result in the

production process and/or the properties of the product deposited being incorrect should be notified to ETA-

Danmark A/S before the changes are introduced. ETA-Danmark A/S will decide whether or not such changes

affect the ETA and consequently the validity of the CE marking on the basis of the ETA and if so whether further

assessment/alterations to the ETA shall be necessary.

The performances of the membranes, the fasteners and the kits are presented in Annexes 1, 2 and 3.

Methods of verification

Assessment of the fitness of the roof waterproofing for the intended use with regard to the essential requirements

N° 2 to N° 4 was performed following the "Guideline for European Technical Approval of systems of

mechanically fastened flexible roof waterproofing membranes" (ETAG 006).

According to the manufacturer's declaration the roof waterproofing taking account of the EU database 5 does not

contain any dangerous or forbidden substances.

4 The manufacturer's technical dossier (MTD) comprises all information necessary for the production and the processing of the

product as well as for the repair of the roof waterproofing made from that. It was checked by ETA-Danmark A/S and it was found

to be in accordance with the conditions stated in the approval and the characteristic values determined during the approval testing.

5) In accordance with http://europa.eu.int-/comm/enterprise/construction/internal/dangsub/dangmain.htm In addition to the specific

clauses relating to dangerous substances contained in this European Technical Approval, there may be other requirements

applicable to the products falling within its scope (e.g. transposed European legislation and national laws, regulations and

administrative provisions). In order to meet the provisions of the EU Construction Products Directive, these requirements need also

to be complied with, when and where they apply.

3 Attestation of Conformity and CE marking

3.1 Attestation of Conformity system

The attestation of conformity applied to this product specified by the European Commission in Mandate Construct

98/143EC of February 1998, Annex 3 is System 2+ and provides:

a) Tasks for the manufacturer:

(1) Initial type testing of the product

(2) Factory production control,

b) Tasks for the notified body:

(1) Initial inspection of factory and of factory production control (FPC)

(2) Continuous surveillance, assessment and approval of factory production control

3.2 Responsibilities

3.2.1 Tasks for the manufacturer

3.2.1.1 Factory production control.

The manufacturer of the membrane has a factory production control system in the plant and exercises permanent

internal control of production. All the elements, requirements and provisions adopted by the manufacturer are

documented in a systematic manner in the form of written policies and procedures. This production control system

ensures that the product is in conformity with the European Technical Approval.

The manufacturers of the fasteners have a factory production control system in the plant and exercises permanent

internal control of production. All the elements, requirements and provisions adopted by the manufacturer are

documented in a systematic manner in the form of written policies and procedures. This production control system

ensures that the product is in conformity with the European Technical Approval.

The manufacturer of membranes and fasteners may only use raw materials or components stated in the technical

documentation of this European technical approval.

The factory production control shall be in accordance with the "Control Plan” relating to the European technical

approval ETA - which is part of the technical documentation of this European technical approval. The "Control

Plan" is laid down in the context of the factory production control system operated by the manufacturer and

deposited at ETA-Danmark A/S. 6

The results of factory production control shall be recorded and evaluated in accordance with the provisions of the

"Control Plan".

The results of factory production control are recorded and evaluated. The records include at least the following

information:

• Designation of the product, basic material and components;

• Type of control or testing;

• Date of manufacture of the product and date of testing of the product or basic material and components;

• Result of control and testing and, if appropriate, comparison with requirements;

• Signature of person responsible for factory production control.

The records shall be presented to ETA-Danmark A/S on request

3.2.1.2 Initial type testing of the product

For initial type-testing the results of the tests performed as part of the assessment for the European Technical

Approval shall be used unless there are changes in the production line or plant. In such cases the necessary initial type

testing has to be agreed between ETA-Danmark A/S and the manufacturer.

3.2.1.3 Other tasks of the manufacturer

The manufacturer shall, on the basis of a contract, involve a body which is notified for the tasks referred to in section

3, in the field of the product in order to undertake the actions laid down in section 3.2.2. For this purpose, the control

plan referred to in section 3.2.2 shall be handed over by the manufacturer to the notified body involved.

3.2.2 Tasks of notified bodies

3.2.2.1 Initial inspection of factory and production control.

ETA-Danmark A/S ascertains that, in accordance with the MTD, factory conditions and production control allow

the manufacturer to ensure the consistency and homogeneity of the manufactured product and its traceability,

thus guaranteeing that the final characteristics of the product are those indicated in chapter 2.

3.2.2.2 Continuous surveillance, assessment and approval of Factory Production Control

The Notified Body shall visit the factory of flexible membranes at least once a year.

Surveillance of the manufacturing processes shall include:

• Checking the documentation of factory production control, to ensure continuing compliance with the

provisions of the ETA,

• Identification of changes by comparing data obtained during the initial inspection or during the last

inspection.

In the event the ETA provisions are not complied with, the certificate of conformity shall be withdrawn and

ETA-Danmark A/S will be informed without delay.

3.3 CE Marking

The CE marking shall be affixed on the kit, components itself/themselves, an attached label, the packaging, or the

accompanying commercial document.

The required information to accompany the symbol ‘’CE’’ is:

• name or identifying name of the producer

• number of the notified body

• last two digits of the year in which the CE marking was affixed

• Number of the certificate of conformity of the Factory Production Control (System 2+)

• number of the ETA

4 Assumptions under which the fitness of the product for the intended use was favourably

assessed

4.1 Installation and design

Annex 4 contains detailed information on installation and design. The information comprises the following:

• type of mechanical fastening of membranes

• type of arranging of fasteners at upstands and penetrations

Membrane:

Fastening:

Design of fastener spacing and areas according to national requirements

Spacing of fasteners (according to kind of fastening)

Design of perimeter and edge fixation

Fastening to supporting construction

Design principles of up-stands and flashings

Design principles of penetrations fastening of installed parts/units according to national requirements

The flexible membranes manufacturer’s installation guide forms part of this ETA.

The design of the roof intended to be covered by the mechanically fastened roof waterproofing system should

take account of the following factors:

• Dead and imposed loads

• Design wind pressure

• Structural strength, stiffness and deflection limits

• Attachment of the roof deck to the structural framing

• Provision of insulation

• Assessment of condensation risk and provision of vapour control layers

• Sound insulation

• Fire precautions

• Roof attachments, fixtures and penetrations

• Falls and drainage

• Means of access for inspection and maintenance

4.2 Substrates

The substrate onto which the waterproofing kit is to be laid should be sufficiently rigid, dense, and dimensionally

stable to support the system (membrane + insulation). Its nature will depend on the type of roof selected (warm

deck, cold deck or inverted) and in turn will have a direct influence on the method of attachment.

In order to support the loads imposed by traffic, insulation materials for use in warm decks should be capable of

resisting permanent deformation or damage when subjected to concentrated loads. They should have a dust-free

surface and sufficient laminar strength to resist with a margin of safety and stress imposed by wind uplift forces.

It shall be ensured that the insulation material on site has a 10% compression of at least 50kPa and a point load

behaviour of 120 kPa, deformation 5 mm. The use of the insulation board as substrate for mechanically fastened

roof waterproofing is defined in national provisions.

4.3 Flexible membranes manufacturer’s responsibilities

It is the manufacturer's responsibility to make sure that all those who use the kit are appropriately informed about

the specific conditions according to sections 1, 2, 4, and 5 including the annexes to this ETA and the not

confidential parts of the MTD to this ETA.

5 Recommendations

5.1 Packaging, transport and storage

This product is neither toxic nor inflammable, so it is not necessary to follow any safety instructions for transport

and handling.

Rolls must always be stored vertically.

The product must keep away from any source of heat, sparks, flame, etc.

5.2 Maintenance and repair of the works

The assessment of the fitness for use is based on the assumption that a normal maintenance of the system is

performed.

This maintenance shall include:

• inspections of the roof at regular interval, e.g. twice a year. This inspection should include:

o cleaning of downpipes and leaf filters

o removal of stones, branches and leafs

o inspection of flashings along the edge of the roof, chimneys, drains and roof lights

o removal of organic growths such as vines

• Flashings to chimneys, roof edges, skylights, caps, drains etc. should be inspected every 5 years and corrected

or replaced if necessary

• Abrasion and minor impact damage shall be repaired.

When replacing components they shall be approved by the manufacturer and covered by the ETA.

Annex 4

Design and installation details

Design and installation

The suitability of this kit is valid only if the installation is carried out in accordance with the manufacturer’s

instructions.

The kit may be laid in conditions normal to roofing work and must not be laid in rain, snow or heavy fog, nor if the

temperature falls below 2°C, unless specific precautions have been taken.

Insulation

The possibly laid insulation layer is constituted by thermal insulation boards appropriate for the use considered (see

ETAG 006 chapter 5.4 and 6.4). They are loose laid on the possibly present vapour barrier. The mechanical fastening

of the waterproofing system fastens the movement of the underlying layers to the deck. In some case (in function of

insulation boards size and national standards) the insulation boards need to be independently fixed by 1 or 2 fasteners

per boards that are not counted for in the density calculation for the mechanically fixed waterproofing. The insulation

layer and the vapour barrier are realized according to the national standards.

Laying and overlaps of the first layer

The first layer, which consists of an underlayer DERBICOAT HP or DERBICOAT ARTIC or DERBIGUM SP 3 FR, is

aligned and unrolled in contact of the substrate. The roll has a nominal width of 110 or 55 cm,

The layer is then mechanically fixed with the fasteners and washers under the longitudinal overlaps (cfr Figure 1). The

next sheet is then aligned on the first with a longitudinal overlap of 120 mm welded. The end overlaps are 100 mm.

Overlaps must be then welded over their whole widths; the edges are then correctly pressed down. A small quantity of

bitumen must be exuded from the overlap joint.

Fasteners

The system is mechanically fastened in the overlaps by using prescribed fasteners (see chapter above). The position of

the fastener in the overlap is shown on the figure 1 above.

The calculation of the distance between fasteners and the number of fasteners per square meters on the different roof

zones are determined according to the national Standards.

The distance E between fasteners is determined by the formula E ≤ 1 / (D * Lr) with the following restrictive

conditions:

- Minimal distance between fasteners = 18 cm

- Maximal distance between fasteners = 34 cm (or in accordance with national standards).

With

- D = minimal density of fasteners = Dp / Wadm of the “kit”

- Lr = distance between fasteners rows (= width of the waterproofing sheet – width of the overlap; 97 cm for a

110 cm sheet, 42 cm for a 55 cm sheet). Figure 4 below gives Lr values for several sheet laying.

- Dp = Wind air pressure in the different roof zones (central, edge, corner,…) according to the national standards.

If the calculated distance with a 110 cm sheet is E < 18 cm it is needed to adapt the laying of the system by either :

- using sheets of 55 cm in width with fasteners in the longitudinal overlaps. See figure 2 below.

- laying additional fasteners in a row at the middle of the sheet. Those fasteners are then recovered by a bridging

stroke of width 20 cm in DERBIGUM fully torched. See figure 3 below.

- Enlarge the width of the longitudinal overlaps > 130 mm.

The second layer, preferably laid in the same direction with an offset of a half width, consists of a cap sheet in

DERBIGUM SP 3 FR or DERBICOLOR 4 FR , fully bonded by torching or fully bonded in cold adhesive

DERBIBOND (± 1 kg/m²). The DERBIGUM SP 3 FR may also be fully bonded in cold adhesive DERBIBOND (±

1kg/m²).

Longitudinal overlaps of the cap sheet are welded over the whole width of 100 mm, the edges are then pressed down

(for instance with a pressure roller). Transverse overlaps are 150 mm. A small quantity of bitumen must be exuded

from the overlap joint. The crossing of the overlaps is done with a T-joint. The edge of the corner is cut at 45°

(cfr Figure 5).

The waterproofing upstand on vertical surfaces is carried out according to the details 7 and 8. The realization detail

(size of strokes, minimal upstand height) and the finishing at the top of the upstand (flashing, finishing profile, etc…)

are in accordance with national recommendations.
