of European Athletics President
We reach a milestone at this year’s European
Athletics Junior Championships in Novi Sad
with the 20th anniversary of this prestigious
event.
Throughout each of the previous 19 editions
we have had the cream of European junior athletic
talent battling for supremacy in their age
group and this year is sure to be no different.
Many have moved on from these championships
to glittering success at the European
Championships, World Championships and
Olympic Games at senior level.
Indeed, the European Athletics Junior Championships
are an important step on the development
ladder for athletes throughout Europe.
They are characterised by an admirable competitiveness
among the athletes and consistently
surprising results, which have made the
biennial championships a highlight on the European
athletics calendar.
We are pleased that the venue for this event is
the excellent Karadjordje Stadium, which has
hosted European Cup meets twice in the past
five years. European Athletics is grateful to the
Athletics Federation of Serbia (Atleski Savez
Srbije) and the Local Organising Committee in
Novi Sad, who have done their best to ensure
the best conditions await our young hopefuls.
We warmly welcome all media who are attending
these championships and we hope you are
able to enjoy an exciting 20th anniversary of
the European Athletics Junior Championships
in this wonderful city of Novi Sad.

Ovogodišnjim Evropskim juniorskim prve n stvom
u atletici stižemo do jubileja ovog prestižnog
takmičenja i njegove dva de stogodišnjice.
Svih 19 prethodnih izdanja ovog takmičenja
imali smo priliku da pratimo sam vrh evropskih
atletskih juniorskih talenata kako se bore
za nadmo[ u svojoj starosnoj grupi a situacija
svakako ne[e biti drugačija ni ove godine.
Mnogi od njih su od ovih takmičenja prešli
na svetle uspehe na Evropskim prvenstvima,
Svetskim prvenstvima i Olimpijskim igrama na
seniorskom nivou.
Zaista su Evropska juniorska prvenstva predstavljala
značajnu stepenicu na razvojnoj lestvici
za atletičare širom Evrope. Njih krasi
veliki takmičarski duh me\u atletičarima i
stalno uzlazni rezultati, koji su učinili da ovo
dvogodišnje prvenstvo postane svetao trenutak
evropskog atletskog kalendara.
Drago nam je što je mesto na kojem [e se odigrati
ovo takmičenje fantastični stadion Kara\or\e,
koji je bio doma[in mitinzima Evropskog
kupa dva puta u proteklih pet godina. Evropska
atletika je zahvalna Atletiskom savezu Srbije i
Lokalnom organizacionom komitetu u Novom
Sadu, koji su dali sve od sebe da obezbede najbolje
mogu[e uslove koji spremno čekaju naše
mlade nade.
Želimo toplu dobrodošlicu svim predstavnicima
medija koji [e prisustvovati ovom prvenstvu
i nadamo se da [ete imati priliku da uživate
u uzbudljivom jubilarnom dvadesetom izdanju
Evropskog juniorskog prvenstva u atletici u
predivnom gradu Novom Sadu.

of Organising Committee President
Dear Athletes and Friends of Sport,
I am honoured to be at the helm of the Organizing
Committee of the 20th European Junior
Athletic Championships, which is going to
be held from July 23rd to 26th, 2009 in Novi
Sad the second largest city in Serbia, as well
as one of the most significant sport cities in
the country.
This is a very important competition that will
gather over 1,500 of the most gifted young
athletes from our continent. I believe that it is
this Championship that will provide them with
the opportunity to fully realize their ambitions
and eagerness to deliver their highest athletic
performances. This will, certainly, be significant
stimulation for their future achievements
in sport, as well as the development of athletics
in general.
Together with the athletes, our city will be visited
by a great number of EA officials, as well
as the officials of different national athletic
federations, team and personal trainers, journalists
and photographers... We are very much
looking forward to welcoming them, as well,
and showing them our hospitality.
The organisation of such a notable competition
is, certainly, a great honour, but also a
great challenge for any city and/or any country.
We will do our best to respond to this
challenge in the best possible way.

Dragi sportisti, uvaženi prijatelji sporta,
tamnoplava
Izuzetna mi je čast što se nalazim na čelu Organizacionog
komiteta jubilarnog 20. Evropskog
juniorskog prvenstva u atletici koje [e,
od 23. do 26. jula 2009. godine, biti održano u
Novom Sadu, drugom po veličini i jednom od
najznačajnijih sportskih gradova u Srbiji.
Reč je o izuzetno značajnom takmičenju na
kojem [e se okupiti preko 1.500 najdarovitijih
mladih atletičara našeg kontinenta. Verujem
da [e njihova ambicija i želja za najvišim sportskim
dometima upravo na ovom šampionatu
dobiti punu potvrdu. To [e, bez sumnje, biti
važan podsticaj za njihov dalji sportski razvoj,
ali i za razvoj atletike uopšte.
Zajedno sa njima, u Novi Sad [e sti[i i veliki broj
funkcionera EA, odnosno nacionalnih atletskih
federacija, reprezentativnih i ličnih trenera,
novinara i fotoreportera… I njih očekujemo sa
velikom radoš[u i potpunom otvorenoš[u.
Organizacija jednog ovako značajnog takmičenja
je, naravno, velika čast, ali i veliki izazov
za jedan grad i jednu zemlju. Učini[emo sve da
tom izazovu odgovorimo na najbolji mogu[i
način.

of the Executive Council of Vojvodina
Dear Friends of Sport,
I am very pleased by every opportunity given
to the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina to
help organise events at the European level
that gather athletes from all parts of Europe
and promote the spirit of sport with no racial,
religious, national or ethnic barriers.
I am certain that the organisation of EJCH Novi
Sad 2009 was rightfully assigned to AP Vojvodina
and Novi Sad for their multiculturality,
tolerance and appreciation of diversity, as well
as for their long athletic tradition.
Through the organisation of this highly demanding
sporting event, we will put forth our
best effort to once more demonstrate that we
belong to the world, just as the world belongs
to us and to reaffirm our traditional Vojvodinian
hospitality.
I would like to wish all the participants of EJCH
Novi Sad 2009 a lot of success in life and sport,
fair play, an enjoyable time and a pleasant stay

Raduje me svaka prilika u kojoj Autonomna
Po krajina Vojvodina pomaže organizaciju manifestacija
evropskog ranga, koje okupljaju
spor tiste iz svih delova Evrope i promovišu
sportski duh, koji ne poznaje rasne, verske, nacionalne
i etničke barijere.
Uveren sam da je organizacija Evropskog
juniorskog prvenstva 2009.godine s pravom
dodeljena AP Vojvodini i Novom Sadu,
kako zbog svoje multikulturalnosti, tolerancije,
uvažavanja posebnosti, tako i zbog duge
tradicije atletskog sporta.
Kroz organizaciju ove vrlo zahtevne sportske
manifestacije, trudi[emo se da još jednom pokažemo
kako pripadamo svetu, kao što svet
pripada nama i potvrdimo tradicionalnu vojvo\ansku
gostoljubivost i srdačnost.
Svim takmičarima koji [e učestvovati na ovom
prvenst-vu, želim puno uspeha u životu i sportu,

Dear Friends,
Dear Athletes,
Ladies and Gentlemen,
It is my great pleasure to welcome you on the
occasion of this event, which is highly significant
both for Novi Sad and Serbia, as well as
the whole of Europe the European Junior Athletic
Championships.
Novi Sad has always been a sport city and
in this period it is going to be the European
athletic centre as well. It is widely known that,
for decades, our athletes have been achieving
top results in various disciplines. By organising
the European Basketball Senior Championship
in 2005, Novi Sad proved to be capable
of hosting one of the most demanding sport
events. We are certain that we will, by organising
the European Junior Athletic Championships,
justify the trust placed in us and that the
forthcoming championship will be a genuine
celebration of sport.
Organising such sport events in our City will
undoub­tedly contribute to the popularisation
of sports with the youth. The City will
do its best to recognise and develop our children’s
talents, as well as to provide them with
even better conditions for doing sports, cherishing
team spirit and fair play.

Veliko mi je zadovoljstvo što imam čast da vas
pozdravim povodom izuzetno velikog doga ­
\ aja za Novi Sad, Srbiju i Evropu - Evropskog
juniorskog prvenstva u atletici 2009.
Novi Sad je uvek bio grad sporta, a ove godine
bi[e i evropski centar atletike. Poznato je da
naši sportisti ve[ decenijama u različitim disciplinama
ostvaruju vrhunske rezultate. Organizacijom
Evropskog seniorskog prvenstva u
košarci 2005. godine, Novi Sad je dokazao da
je spreman da bude doma[in najzahtevnijim
sportskim manifestacijama. Ube\eni smo da
[emo i ovoga puta, organizacijom Evropskog
juniorskog prvenstva u atletici, opravdati poverenje
koje nam je ukazano i da [e predstoje[e
prvenstvo biti istinski praznik sporta.
Održavanje ovakvih sportskih manifestacija u
našem gradu sigurno [e doprineti popularizaciji
sporta kod mladih. Grad [e se i u budu[nosti
truditi da prepozna i razvija talente naše dece
kao i da im omogu[i što bolje uslove za bavljenje
sportom, negovanje takmičarskog duha
i fer­plej­a.

As a citizen of Novi Sad, I am proud that our
City will host the 2009 European Athletics Junior
Championships.
This event offers additional motivation and
encouragement to present our City to the
world through these delightful and healthy
events.
Therefore, our beautiful Novi Sad a city of
distinguished tradition and historical heritage
is looking forward to becoming even richer
through the events that will gather athletes
from all parts of Europe. The organisation of
such an important event presents strong stimulation
for even more rapid development of
both urban and sport culture in our environment.
I am very pleased by the fact that the City of
Novi Sad is once again recognised to be appropriate
to assume the role of the organiser of
this important sport event, which will contribute
to the favourable image of our City and
our country in the world.

It is our truly great honour to have the opportunity
to be your hosts in our town during
the European Athletics Junior Championships
2009 (EJCH 2009).
First of all, we would like to emphasise that
we have done everything possible to create
appropriate conditions for an uninterrupted
performance of your news work, both at the
Media Stands of ‘Kara\or\e’ stadium, from
which you will be able to follow the competition
directly, and the Press Centre, located in
SPC ‘Vojvodina’, only a hundred metres away
from the stadium, which will also be at your
disposal.
Besides proper technical conditions, you will
have at your disposal a team of professional
journalists and volunteers at all times, headed
by Aleksandar Predojevi[, a journalist for the
Novi Sad daily ‘Dnevnik’, whom some of you
have surely already met at some of the international
competitions similar to EJCH 2009.
We believe that their experience, knowledge
and great desire to do their job in the best
possible way will be of a great benefit to you.
We would also like to make you feel comfortable
in the hotel you are accommodated in
and we wish you to get to know the other, not
just athletic, face of Novi Sad during your stay.
It is a town of rich history as well being lively
nowadays, open for everyone who comes to
visit, either for sport or any other reason.

Zaista nam je izuzetna čast što [emo imati
priliku da vas, tokom Evropskog juniorskog
prvenstva u atletici 2009 (EJP 2009), ugostimo
u našem gradu.
Pre svega ostalog, želimo da naglasimo da smo
učinili sve da vam stvorimo odgvaraju[e uslove
da nesmetano obavite svoj novinarski posao,
kako na Medija tribini Stadiona “Kara\or\e”, sa
koje [ete direktno pratiti takmičenje, tako i u

je od stadiona udaljen jedva stotinak metara i

General Information
Official name:
The Republic of Serbia. It contains two autonomous
provinces: Vojvodina and Kosovo-
Metohija.
Area:
88,361 km²
Climate:
Temperate continental climate, with a gradual
transition between the four seasons of the
year.
Population:
7,498.001 (the latest 2002. census, excluding
Kosovo­Metohija)
Language: The official language is Serbian and
the script in official use is Cyrillic, while Latin
script is also used. In the areas inhabited by
ethnic minorities, the languages and scripts of
the minorities are in official use, as provided
by law.
Capital:
Belgrade (Beograd), with a population of 1,6
millions, is the administrative, economic and
cultural centre of Serbia.
Religion:
The main religion in Serbia is Christian Ortodox.
There are also other religious communities
in Serbia: Islamic, Roman Catholic, Protestant,
Jewish and other. Vojvodina with its
capital, Novi Sad, has six official languages,
and there are more than 26 ethnic groups in
the region.
Government:
Democratic republic. The president and the
parliament are elected every four years in
general elections. Current president of Serbia
is Boris Tadic.
Currency: The monetary unit is the Dinar (CSD)
­ 1 Dinar = 100 Para. Coins: 50 Para, 1, 2, 5, 10 and
20 Dinar

Most banks and post offices are open from
08.00 a.m. to 07.00 p.m. on weekdays and
from 08.00 a.m. to 03.00 p.m. on Saturdays.
On Sundays there is usually a designated bank
or post office that maintains needed services.
There are branch offices of all major European
banks in Novi Sad and all types of debit and
credit cards can be used
Power supply:
220 V, 50 Hz
Shops:
Food shops typically open at 06.00 a.m. and
work until 09.00 p.m., both weekdays and Saturdays.
Sundays they typically operate from
06.00 a.m. to 03.00 p.m. Everywhere, there
are stores open 24 hours a day. Markets are
opened every day from 06.00 a.m. to 05.00
p.m.

Novi Sad is the administrative, economic, cultural,
educational and sports centre of the
Autonomous Province of Vojvodina. It is the
second largest Serbian town, smaller only
than the capital city of Belgrade. Novi Sad is
a remarkably active place, so it is a venue of a
number of events, such as the music festival
EXIT, which has made Novi Sad famous all over
Europe.
The city is located in the east of Europe, in Serbia,
between the 19th and 20th meridian east
and 45th and 46th parallel north. It is situated
in the southern part of the Pannonian plain, its
greater part laying in South Bačka at 72 to 80 m
above the sea level. It lies on the right bank of
the river Danube, on its 1.255th kilometre.
With its 15 suburban neighbourhoods, the urban
area of Novi Sad spreads over 702.7 km²;
with its largest suburbs Petrovaradin and
Sremska Kamenica it covers an area of 129.4
km², while the city development area is 106.2
km².
With the suburban neighbourhoods Novi Sad
has a population of more than 400,000 people,
which is approximately 20 % of the entire population
of the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina,
the most developed Serbian region.
The average temperature in the city is 10.9 degrees
Centigrade; the average January temperature
being ­1°C, while in July it is 21.6 °C. The
temperature extremes range between – 30.7
°C and + 41.5 °C. The annual rainfall is 686 millimetres,
and the number of days with precipitation

The lowest average Danube water level is 70.83
and the highest is 79.7 metres above sea level.

Novi Sad je administrativni, ekonomski, kulturni,
obrazovni i sportski centar Autonomne
pokrajine Vojvodine. Drugi je po veličini grad

Iz istorije grada...
Our city is placed into the category of younger
settlements by historians, because it was
founded only 315 years ago, or more precisely
in 1694, although the first archaeological findings
reveal remains of the first settlement as
long ago as 3,000 BC.
The history book of Novi Sad is perhaps not
a voluminous reading in comparison to other
European cities, but it is very rich nevertheless.
When in 1694 a bridgehead was built facing
one of the city’s present symbols ­ the
Petrovaradin Fortress ­ the area on the bank
of the river Danube where the river is lowest
around it was gradually inhabited by civilians
forming a settlement they called Petrovaradiniense
or Rascianica civitas trans Danubium
situate. Ever since then the history of Novi Sad
was permeated with a constant struggle and
aspiration for a progressive, beneficial, good
and peaceful communal life of all of its inhabitants,
at the beginning Serbs, Germans, Jews,
Greeks, Hungarians, and Aromanians.
Empress Maria Theresa of Austria, on 1st February
1748, decided to award the town with
the title of a free royal town naming it: Latin
– Neoplanta, Hungarian – Új-vidégh, German
Neu­Satz, and Serbian Novi Sad.
Novi Sad was at the height of its development
in the interwar period, especially after World
War II. Since then, it has been the administrative,
economic, educational and cultural centre
of AP Vojvodina, a home a number of very
important institutions, the oldest Serbian theatre
house, a prestigious university...

Naš grad istoričari ubrajaju u mla\e gradove,
jer je utemeljen pre svega 315 godina, tačnije
1694. godine, mada prva arheološka nalazišta
otkrivaju tragove naseobina još od pre 3.000
godina pre naše ere..
Čitanka istorije Novog Sada možda nije, u
pore\enju s drugim evropskim gradovima,
obimna knjiga, ali je veoma bogata. Od 1694.
godine kada je izgra\en mostobran nasuprot
jednog od njegovih današnjih simbola, Petrovaradinske
tvr\ave, oko njega je uz obalu Dunava
gde je reka najuža, nicalo i naselje civila
koga u to vreme nazivaju Petrovaradiniense
ili Rascianica civitas trans Danubium situate.
Svo to vreme ispisano je stalnom borbom i
težnjama za naprednim, korisnim, dobrim i
mirnim zajedničkim životom na korist svih
svojih stanovnika, u prvo vreme Srba, Nemaca,
Jevreja, Grka, Ma\ara i Cincara.
Austrijska carica Marija Terezija, 1. februara godine
1748. godine, donosi odluku da grad postane
slobodna kraljevska varoš i daje joj ime:
latinski – Neoplanta, ma\arski – Új-vidégh,
nemački Neu-Satz, srpski Novi Sad.
Veoma brz razvoj Novi Sad doživljava izme\u
dva svetska rata, a naročito posle onog drugog.
Od tada je administrativno, privredno, obrazovno
i kulturno središte AP Vojvodine, sa
nizom veoma važnih institucija, najstarijim

will receive an accreditation card, which must
be worn at all times and should be clearly visible.
Security personnel will control all areas.
The accreditation is not transferable and does
not allow the holder to take another person
beyond checkpoints. Photos are not required
for the accreditation card system.

Accreditation cards will be prepared in advance
of the event, based on the information
provided by you or your organization in the
European Athletics online registration system.
No changes will be accepted after the final entry
deadline.
Accreditation cards will be distributed at the
Accreditation Centre, located in SPC “Vojvodina”.

Kara\or\e Stadium
The EJCH 2009 competitions will take place
at ‘Kara\or\e’ stadium, which was built as far
back as 1924. It owes its name to the leader of
the 1804 Serbian national revolution, Ðor\e
Petrovi[ Kara\or\e. The name has changed
several times, and last year its original name
was restored.
The first athletic track at the stadium was
made in 2004 when Novi Sad hosted Group
B of athletics’ European Cup. After that, it
was the venue of the Balkan Athletics Games
(2005), another event for the European Cup
Group B (2006), as well as the individual championships
of Serbia (2008).
The seating capacity is 14,000, and within the
preparations for EJCH 2009 a new southeast
stand was built, where the state­of­the­art
‘Philips’ scoreboard is located – a colour megascreen
with an area of more than 44 m². This is
where the podium for the victory ceremony
will be placed as well.
Besides this, a part of the western stands has
been reconstructed, where the media stands
will be located, which will serve as the workplace
for the EJCH 2009 reporters. The mixed
zone will be equipped not far away from the
media stands, while an appropriate space will
be reserved for photographers.
Media Tribune
The Media Tribune is located almost exactly
in the line with the finish line of the athletics
track, which will make it easier and more efficient
for journalists to follow the competition.
This area will, of course, be provided with all
the necessary technical conditions (CIS monitors,
wireless Internet connection, power outlets
...), a fast and efficient distribution of all
the documents (start lists, results ...) in hard
copy form, as well as refreshments for the media
representatives.

Mixed Zone
The mixed zone is located in the immediate
vicinity of the finish line, which will allow for
flash interviews to be taken right after the
completion of events. They will be taken by
EJCH professional journalists, and the interviews
will, it goes without saying, be made
available to all championship reporters right
away.
Photographers’ Area
As prescribed by the European Athletics rules,
conditions will be provided for 12 in­field photographers.
The others will have a space especially
dedicated for them on the west stand,
in the immediate vicinity of the finish line,
within easy reach of the podium at the southeast
stand, where the victory ceremonies will
take place.

Takmičenja na EJP 2009 bi[e održana na stadionu
„Kara\or\e“, koji je izgra\en davne 1924.
godine. Ime je dobio po vo\i nacionalne revolucije
u Srbiji 1804. godine, Ðor\u Petrovi[u
Kara\or\u. Nekoliko puta je menjao ime, a od
prošle godine ponovo nosi svoj izvorni naziv.
Pravu atletsku stazu dobio je 2004. godine
kada je Novi Sad bio doma[in B grupe Evropskog
kupa u atletici. Posle toga, na njemu su
održane i Balkanske atletske igre (2005. godine),
još jedno takmičenje za Evropski kup B
grupe (2006. godine), kao i pojedinačno prvenstvo
Srbije (2008. godine).
Kapacitet gledališta je 14.000 mesta, a u okviru
priprema za EJP 2009, izgra\ena je nova
jugoistočna, na kojoj je postavljen najsavremeniji
„Filipsov“ kolorni megaekran čija površina
je ve[a od 44 m2. Na toj tribini bi[e i
podijum za cremonije proglašenja pobednika.
Uz to, rekonstruisan je deo zapadne tribine, na
kojoj [e biti smešten i Medija tribina, odnosno
prostor za rad izveštača sa EJP 2009. Nedaleko
od Medija tribine, bi[e opremljena Miks zona,
a odgovaraju[i prostor bi[e obezbe\en i za rad
fotoreportera.
Medija tribina
Medija tribina se nalazi gotovo u liniji cilja na
atletskoj stazi, što [e pra[enje takmičenja svakako
učiniti lakšim i efikasnijim.
U tom prostoru [e, naravno, biti obezbe\eni
svi neophodni tehnički uslovi (CIS monitori,
bežični internet, priključci za električnu energiju...),
brza i efikasna distribucija svih dokumenata
(startne liste, rezultati...) u štampanoj
formi, kao i odgovaraju[e osveženje za predstavnike
medija.

Lokacija Miks zone je u neposrednoj blizini
ciljne linije, što [e omogu[iti da se blic­izjave
uzimaju neposredno po završetku pojedinih
disciplina. To [e činiti profesionalni novinari
Informativnog sektora EJP, a izjave [e, razume
se, biti odmah dostupne svim izveštačima sa
šampionata.
Prostor za rad fotoreportera
U skladu sa pravilima EA, za 12 fotoreportara
bi[e obezbe\eni uslovi za rad pored samog
borilišta. Za ostale [e, na zapadnoj tribini, biti
ure\en poseban prostor, u neposrednoj blizini
linije cilja, sa mogu[noš[u nesmetanog odlaska
do podijuma na jugositočnoj tribini, na kojem
[e biti organizovane ceremonije proglašenja
pobednika.

SPC „Vojvodina“
SPC ‘Vojvodina’ is a virtual temple of sports in
Novi Sad, with a number of arenas and other
side facilities, including an appropriate space
for journalists.
Media Centre:
The SPC ‘Vojvodina’ Media Centre is located
on the second floor of the building. During
EJCH 2009 it will be placed at the disposal of
the competition reporters and will possess,
similar to the media Tribune at ‘Kara\or\e’
stadium, all technical and other conditions for
their uninterrupted and efficient work.
From the Media Centre the journalists will be
able to follow live television coverage of the
competition in the period agreed upon with
the Radio-Television Vojvodina, as the competition
broadcaster.

Accreditation Centre:
The Accreditation Centre will also be located
on the first floor of SPC ‘Vojvodina’ close to
the amphitheatre, in the hall between the
Small and Ice Arena.
